Introduction Strathmore Woollen Co is one of Scotland's most renowned suppliers of authentic tartan fabric and manufactures of superior quality traditional Highlandwear. Trading since 1949. Strathmore has been operating for over half a century in the Scottish Textiles Industry bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience. Ownership of the business transferred in 2018 to Christine Donaldson, who has worked within the Scottish textile industry for over 30 years.
At Strathmore, we pride ourselves on our superior standard of product coupled with a reputation for friendly, efficient and personal service.
Our Services Stock Tartans We stock 400 Tartans across two cloth qualities that are suitable for a variety of products, from traditional Highlandwear, garments, accessories and homeware.
Bespoke Highland Dress At Strathmore we offer the service of Gents and Ladies' Madeto-Measure Highland dress that is of premium quality. All of our garments and accessories are made here in Scotland.
Tartan Design Service Design, register and weave your very own Tartan with us. Using custom weave design software, we can digitally create your Tartan design prior to weaving.
Company History
1949
A new adventure... Created as a joint venture between Don Brothers Buist, & Ballantynes of Peebles... from inception, Strathmore Woollen Co was synonymous with top-quality
1983 Creating a legacy... Sales Director, David Cowley, headed a buy out and transformed Strathmore Woollen Co over the following 35 years. David expanded the Tartan stock range to over 400 premium Tartans, all woven in the UK from 100% worsted wool.
2018
A new beginning... Christine Donaldson purchased the business and brought with her over 30 years experience of working in the Scottish Textile industry, as well as renewed passion for preserving the heritage of tartan.
Today Preserving craft and heritage... Strathmore Woollen Co remains a privately owned business still based in Forfar, Scotland.
We embrace modern innovation and the latest technology, whilst honouring and preserving traditional crafts.
Highlandwear—Kilts Regulation Kilt Our most popular kilt style, using a minimum of 8 yards of Tartan fabric, with three buckles and straps for fastening.
Kilts can either be pleated to the sett or the stripe, our team are more than happy to discuss this with you.
Made to order either machines sewn or handsewn.

Weekend Kilt Our weekend kilt is ideal for more leisurely and casual wear, however can be formalised as demonstrated in images.
Using a minimum of 4 yards in each kilt and pleated to the best use of cloth. Machine sewn with two buckles and straps for fastening.
