UTILISING SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

In addition, our recycled silt socks are produced in collaboration with a local social enterprise, Assembled Threads. This partnership not only ensures high quality products but also provides meaningful employment opportunities for individuals from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds. It’s an initiative which underscores our dedication to social responsibility and being good corporate citizens.

Our recycled silt sock is a great example of our commitment to superior environmental practices which extend beyond prevention through actively repurposing waste.

One example of this is with our recycled silt socks, which unlike most silt socks on the market, are made from 100% recycled materials. A silt sock is a simple yet effective form of sediment and erosion control, consisting of a fabric mesh sleeve filled with gravel. These are placed around drains to prevent silt and sediment from leaving worksites during heavy rain.

To make our recycled silt socks we work with our civil construction partners to repurpose the temporary fence banner mesh from construction sites to make silt sock sleeves. Next instead of using gravel, we use reclaimed aggregate as the filling material. This produces less dust than alternatives such as scoria and disrupts the landfill waste stream.

Suit Up

Wear appropriate safety wear to deal with the spill. This may include gloves, goggles and coveralls.

STEP 7

Prevent Further Contamination

Prevent the spill from spreading any further and reaching any drains. If possible, stop the source of the spill.

STEP 8

Contain the Spill

Encircle the spill with absorbent socks or booms. If possible, attempt to reduce the area of the spill.

STEP 9

Clean Up the Spill

Use socks to contain the spill. Use pads for shallow spills and cushions for pooled liquids. Granules last for bulk remainder.

STEP 10

Disposal & Reporting

Place used absorbents in hazardous waste disposal bags and dispose of accordingly. Report incident to relevant personnel.

General Purpose Absorbents

Which Polypropylene Absorbent?

At Stratex we offer three main types of polypropylene absorbents. Here we will help you determine which absorbents are right for your application.

Hydrocarbons (oil, fuel, solvents)

These powerful absorbents are grey in colour and rapidly soak up all types of liquid spills, including non-hazardous, water based, hydrocarbons (including oil & fuel) as all as most chemicals. Available in pads, rolls, adhesive matting, drum toppers, socks and cushions.

Absorbent Pads

Absorbent pads are ideal for the clean up and maintenance of leaks, drips and spills. They can be used on sealed and unsealed surfaces and are available in two thicknesses depending on application.

Heavyweight pads are suitable for absorbing large pools of liquid. Each heavyweight pad can absorb up to one litre.

Standard pads offer excellent versatility and less wastage when used for smaller spills.

Absorbent Rolls

Absorbent rolls offer the same great benefits of absorbent pads, except on a roll. Rolls are best used with a dispenser - Stratex offers wall mount and floor standing dispensers to keep your absorbent rolls within easy reach and free of contamination.

Absorbent rolls are a popular choice for heavy machinery workshops or liquid handling and storage areas, in which spills are just part of everyday life. Stratex absorbent rolls provide superior performance and quality for a rapid no-fuss clean up.

Absorbent Socks

Absorbent socks are designed to encircle spills for clean up or to protect areas from the path of spills. They absorb liquid spills quickly and stop them from spreading further.

Once absorbent socks have contained the spill, absorbent pads or granules can be used to soak up the pooled liquid.

Absorbent Cushions

Absorbent custions are excellent for absorbing the bulk of a contained spill when a pad isn’t enough. They are lightweight, compact and simple to use. Cushions can be placed under leaks or stuffed into holes and other hard to reach places.

Each Stratex absorbent cushion can absorb up to 4.5 litres of liquid. General purpose absorbents rapidly soak up all types of liquid spills, including non-hazardous, water based, hydrocarbons (including oil and fuel) as well as most chemicals.

Absorbent Drum Toppers

Absorbent drum toppers prevent drum top leaks from reaching the floor and creating a potentially slippery floor. They feature bonded construction which helps to maintain their strength, even when fully saturated.

Drum toppers are 56cm in diameter with an 8cm spout hole to suit 205 litre (44 gallon) drum.

Oil and fuel absorbents are ideal for absorbing all types of hydrocarbon spills, including fuels, oils, hydraulic fluids and solvents.

Sticky Back Absorbent Matting

Our versatile absorbent floor matting features a sticky adhesive backing, which provides an impermeable barrier to keep floors clean, no matter what is spilt on top of it. The adhesive backing provides excellent grip to minimise trip and slip hazards. Sticky back absorbent matting is ideal for use in workshop walkways, entry matting, in supermarket wet areas, food and beverage processing, abbatoirs and medical facilities.

Absorbent Sweep

Absorbent sweeps are designed to contain hydrocarbon spills in outdoor environments and on bodies of water. They are hydrophobic and will float on water, even when fully saturated. They are ideal for removing the final sheen from oil spills on water after the bulk clean-up has taken place. The sweep is dragged over the surface of the water, and the highly absorbent fibres capture the remaining oil slick or sheen. The oil and fuel sweep features reinforced webbing fixed to the front edge to provide the strength required for movement across the water without tearing.

Marine Boom

Marine booms are highly effective for containing spills in water applications such as streams, rivers and lakes, as well as wet weather situations, due to their ability to float even when they are saturated with oil. These spills could occur from generaors or earth moving equipment working near water, or boats barges and deredges. Marine booms can be linked together to form a longer barrier with heavy duty clip locks enabling rapid emergency response. Booms are constructed with a strong mesh outer sleeve to resist snags and debris, with an internal rope for strength when linked iwth other booms.

Bilge Boom

Bilge booms are designed to absorb and contain hydrocarbon spills including oil, fuel, solvents, petrol and diesel. These absorbents are hydrophobic (water repellant) and will float, even when fully saturated with oil.

Bilge booms are ideal for removing oil from water in your sump, pit, tank or bilge. They can also be used in long term deployments in drain pollution guards to prevent hydrocarbons from pollution stormwater systems. Supplied with a rope loop for easy attachment to drain grates and recovery.

Spilltration Husky absorbents is a unique absorbent material available designed to absorb oils and fuels in outdoor wet environments such as high rainfall and water run-off. They are engineered to allow clean rainwater to filter through while absorbing and containing oil-based leaks and drips such as fuels, lubricant, solvent and transmission fluid spills.

Four Reasons Why We Love Absorbents

1. There’s an absorbent for every purpose.

Pads, socks, booms, cushions, granules – they can all be used for different applications, whether it’s a chemical spill, oil leak, or even beer spill. Polypropylene absorbents share the same base material, but the way they are treated can have a big impact on how they work as a spill absorbent.

Untreated polypropylene absorbents have hydrophobic properties (basically, afraid of water). This helps them to absorb hydrocarbons such as oil and fuel whilst repelling water. This is great for wet conditions because you’ll only absorb hydrocarbons, minimising usage and waste. WIPES RAGS VS

DefendaWipes are made for wiping. Their spunlace nonwoven composite construction is derived from renewable wood pulp fibres. This reduces lint, the fine and short fibres which remain on a surface after wiping.

DefendaWipes are embossed, which aids in lifting liquid away from surfaces. DefendaWipes are available in two thicknesses, 60gsm and 120gsm. Both are equally absorbent by weight.

We often ask clients to grab each end of a DefendaWipe and pull - it’s difficult to tear. Replicating this test using a wet DefendaWipe produces a similar outcome - a true testament to their strength.

DefendaWipes are manufactured and packaged more efficiently than rags. A box of DefendaWipes will take up less space than a similar size and quantity of rags. We also offer a range of dispensing options.

DefendaWipes offer great value compared with rags. Wipes are lighter than rags and have superior absorption efficiency, resulting in lower contaminated waste disposal costs.

ABSORBENCY

Rags can be made up of different types of fabric; cotton, polyester, nylon and various blends. All of these materials vary in their absorbency and wiping performance. Because rags are derived from clothing and bedding, wiping is a secondary utility - Rags have a tendency to smear.

Rags are made from various materials which can limit its ability to absorb spills. Subsequently, more rags may be required than wipes to soak up an equivalent spill.

Rags are made from fabric, resistant to tears and abrasions. Additionally strength is not compromised when soaked with fluid.

How many rags can you fit into a bag? Bags of rags are packed tightly - once they’re opened rags can spill out onto the floor, risking contamination.

Rags offer excellent value and disrupt the waste cycle, avoiding landfill by giving old clothing a second life. However used rags result in heavier contaminated waste, increasing disposal costs.

FulaPrene 303 is a neoprene based adhesive sealant ideal for securing Stratex floor bunding to a variety of surfaces, ensuring a watertight seal.

FulaPrene 303 will adhere to a wide range of substrates including many difficult plastics and rubbers, and can be used in numerous common construction applications. We recommend using one tube of FulaPrene for every three metres of floor bunding.

Hazardous goods such as flammable liquids and corrosive chemicals can pose a risk to people, property and the environment - even when they’re not in use. The good news is that risk can be reduced simply through awareness and by having the right protocols in place.

What are Hazardous Goods Storage Requirements?

The requirements for hazardous chemical storage are outlined in the Australian Standards. Whilst these standards are not law, they are recognised as an important part of a compliant solution. Each state government has their own Dangerous Goods Acts containing broad legal principles. In addition to these acts, the government has developed regulations and codes of practice to show businesses how to meet the requirements of the law.

To complement the broad acts set out above, Standards Australia have developed a series of standards to outline specific design requirements for hazardous goods storage.

Hazardous goods should be stored in Australian Standard compliant cabinets with adequate ventilation, spill containment capacity, dangerous goods signage and be constructed from appropriate materials. They will reduce risk and improve efficiencies in the handling of dangerous goods. It’s important to note that not all storage cabinets are the same - storage requirements differ based on the class of hazardous goods in line with Australian Standards.

Class 8 - Corrosive Substances

These cabinets are designed for the storage of mild class 8 corrosive substances such as acids and bases such as bromine, sodium hydroxide, sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide.

Polyurethane drain covers are the simplest of all drain covers. Just remove from its cover, unroll, and place it on the drain. The tacky, flexible polyurethane cover forms a tight seal to block out contaminates. These covers temporarily bond to any smooth surface and are resistant to most chemicals including oils, fuels and solvents. Easily cleaned and reused - just wash with warm soapy water and wrap in plastic sheet. Five sizes of covers are available, and a vinyl holdall can also be purchased separately for high visibility storage.

Silt curtains provide a waterborne barrier around waterfront civil construction projects, restricting damage from sediment runoff into waterways such as rivers, lakes and harbours. The curtain is constructed from a PVC coated top float chamber using oil resistant crumble-proof foam blocks - this section is longitudinally reinforced with polyester webbing for extra strength.

A non-woven geotextile skirt below the float chamber restricts water flow and allows the suspended sediment to settle. A PVC coated chain pocket is attached to the bottom of the geofabric skirt to provide sufficient ballast to keep it taut.
