Service A warm welcome to you all and thank you for joining us this evening for our Light up a Life service – a heartfelt evening of remembrance and reflection. Together, we come together as a community to celebrate the lives of those we hold dear. Through beautiful choir performances, thoughtful readings, and the lighting of our Christmas tree, we honour their memory with love.
THROUGHOUT DECEMBER in support of St Raphael’s Hospice straphaels.org.uk 2
Before and after the service, we warmly invite you to spend time in our peaceful Courtyard Garden, where you may light a candle in remembrance. You’re also welcome to relax indoors, enjoy a mince pie and a warming seasonal drink, or browse a selection of festive gifts. Inside, you’ll find our Reflection Room – a calm, quiet space where you can take a moment for yourself, find your handwritten star, or write a new dedication to someone you love.
Each star, bearing the name of your loved one shines brightly during these services as a symbol of love and remembrance. Following the services, your stars will be lovingly displayed on one of our Hospice Christmas trees – keeping them close to us throughout the festive season. In January, our biodegradable stars will be returned to the earth by our Gardening Team, nurturing them into the Hospice gardens – a lasting reminder of life, renewal and the changing seasons. Every star dedicated this Christmas helps us continue to provide free Hospice care for our patients and their families. Your generous support ensures that, year after year, we can make a vital difference to those who need it most. Thank you for being here. Keeping Mum’s Memory Bright: Ten Years of Light up a Life This year marks our tenth Christmas since we said goodbye to my mum at the Hospice. Every year since, our family gathers at Light up a Life – not with sadness, but with joy and love. It has become a cherished tradition, and our way of saying thank you to St Raphael’s. My name is Diana, and ten years ago my mum, Helen, died at St Raphael’s Hospice. What would have been a traumatic time became, quite honestly, the best experience of death we could have hoped for. Her last days were filled with love, life, warmth and the chance to make the most of every last moment together. She was on the ward for two weeks, but from day one, the Hospice felt like home. The nurses brought us tea, played her favourite music – Elvis and Tom Jones – and we enjoyed her favourite cream cakes with her. My sister and I slept in the room with her and when she passed, it was peaceful. That’s all we could have asked for. We adored Mum with her big personality, so full of fun. When she was well enough, she loved visiting the Hospice’s Wellbeing Centre for art classes, shared stories and much laughter. Now, every year, our children, their partners and our grandchildren come together for Light up a Life. We love writing Mum’s name on a star and placing it on the tree. We even hang stars at home, keeping the tradition alive. Although my grandchildren never met her, they know that this is the special place where Great Nanny Helen died. If you can have a good experience of death, it makes remembering and celebrating them easier. We’ll always be grateful to St Raphael’s for giving our mum the end she deserved and for helping us to have such a positive experience at life’s most challenging time.
This Christmas marks ten years without her – but the love, gratitude and happy memories live on.

“Because of St Raphael’s, I’m able to smile again.” When grief feels all-consuming, even the smallest light can help guide the way. For Lindsay, that light was St Raphael’s. When my husband Roger died, I thought I’d never smile again. It was devastating. Roger’s illness progressed so quickly, he didn’t make it to the Hospice, and I found his final days in hospital deeply distressing. But St Raphael’s care didn’t stop when Roger died. It was the opposite. The Hospice gently swooped in and wrapped its support around me through my darkest days. The care,counselling and sense of belonging it gave me brought me back to life. Grief can be such a lonely road, but thankfully the Hospice stepped in without hesitation. They provided unwavering support when I felt completely lost. In many ways, the Hospice saved my life. Through counselling, bereavement groups, and the comforting sanctuary of their Wellbeing Centre, they gave me small reasons to keep going. And slowly, something I thought was gone forever came back – my smile. Because of Roger, I have realised that the Hospice isn’t a place to die – it’s a place that honours life. This is the power of St Raphael’s. It brings compassion, dignity, and comfort to people navigating life’s most painful moments. Not just for the patients, but for those left behind too. Light up a Life is a special date I mark every year. The services at the Hospice are beautiful, comforting, and full of love. Tim and Ros’s Story For Tim and Ros Kilby, St Raphael’s Hospice was always a place of warmth, compassion and care. Their connection began when Ros was cared for at the Hospice several years ago, and the experience left a deep and lasting impression on them both.

Nestled in the heart of our Hospice garden, St Raphael’s Tree of Life shines with hundreds of copper leaves – each one engraved with the name of someone dearly missed and lovingly remembered. Every leaf tells a story, creating a lasting symbol of love, connection and community.
“After Ros died, Tim often talked about how special St Raphael’s was,” recalls his brother, Nick. “He knew how much the care had meant to her, and he never stopped supporting the Hospice. It became part of his life.”
“They both believed that the Hospice gave people the gift of dignity and care when it’s needed most. That’s why remembering the Hospice in your Will, no matter the size of the gift, can make such a powerful difference. It’s a way of giving something back.”
For many years after Ros’s death, Tim continued to give generously, ensuring that other families could receive the same care and kindness they had known. Then, in 2024, when Tim needed end-of-life care himself, he returned to St Raphael’s – the very place that had once brought such comfort to his wife.
Gifts in Wills help ensure that future generations of local families can receive the same compassionate care that Tim and Ros experienced. Every legacy, large or small, sustains the Hospice’s work and brings comfort, peace and care to those who need it most.
In his room, surrounded by photographs of his loved ones, Tim would talk to the nurses about Ros and the life they shared. “Tim felt completely at peace being cared for at St Raphael’s,” says Nick. “He told us he couldn’t have been in a better place. It meant everything to us to know he was being looked after with such compassion.
“Tim and Ros would be so proud to know their legacy is helping others,” Tim’s sister, Penny, adds. “It’s the most fitting tribute to two people who gave so much love in their lifetime.”
“We wanted to share Tim and Ros’s story because St Raphael’s meant so much to them,” says Nick.

For Corina Tyler and her family, dedicating a leaf in memory of her mum, Kathleen was a profoundly meaningful moment. Kathleen died during the Covid pandemic, when visiting restrictions made it difficult for the family to be together in the Hospice.
Hospice to see it for the first time. “It was really emotional,” she says. “We brought candles and flowers, and it meant so much to have everyone – including her grandchildren – together to remember Mum. It felt like a beautiful moment to celebrate her life.” For Corina, the leaf is much more than a tribute – it’s a way of keeping her mother’s spirit close. “Mum was such a warm, caring person,” she says. “She was the heart of our family. Knowing there’s a leaf here in her name means she’ll always be part of this place and the care that continues.”
“When Mum was cared for at St Raphael’s, only a few of us were allowed to visit,” Corina recalls. “It was such a hard time, and we always felt that the rest of the family never really got to see her final resting place.
