One of the great attractions of living on the Costa del Sol is that you can enjoy all of your favourite leisure pursuits and lifestyle indulgences. You love the beach? You’re in luck. The picturesque coastline is dotted with stunning frontline Mediterranean-style townhouses and apartment complexes. You prefer the tranquility of a more exclusive setting? Again, the Coast is full of gated and secure residential estates with outstanding contemporary villas – from the coastal area into the nearby mountains and rustic hinterland. All courses on the Costa del Sol have property developments either incorporated as part of the golf complex itself, or nearby and within easy walking distance. They range from luxurious mansions lining the fairways and sumptuous villas strategically dotted around the course to spacious townhouses and high-end apartment buildings in the outlying streets – offering residents both privacy and superb views overlooking the course. YEAR-ROUND GOLF The Costa del Sol is one of the few places in Europe where golfers can play 365 days a year. When courses are closed in Finland and other northern countries because of inclement winter weather, those on Spain’s sunny southern coast remain open and fully playable. The Coast’s superb golf courses are complemented by other first-class club amenities including state-ofthe-art driving ranges and academies, clubhouses with elegant bar, lounge and dining areas, and comfortable changing rooms and (in some cases) gym and spa services. TRANSPORT CONNECTIONS Málaga-Costa del Sol International Airport is one of Europe’s key transport hubs, with convenient daily connections to Finland and other European countries, and regular services linking other overseas destinations. On arrival, golfers will also find excellent road connections, highlighted by a dual-carriageway coastal highway as well as a separate tollway from Fuengirola – starting 20 kilometres from the airport (which is serviced by all the major car rental companies) – to Sotogrande. There are also convenient, well-maintained and regularly upgraded road connections from the coast to all the area’s golf courses, especially those located in the increasingly popular “Golden Triangle” area encompassing Marbella, Estepona and Benahavís.

DIVERSE LOCATIONS In 1997, in the lead-up to the Ryder Cup at Valderrama, new road signs started to appear along the coast: “Costa del Sol – Costa del Golf”. The slogan might have been coined by local tourism authorities but it was not just a clever marketing ploy. The Costa del Sol can, genuinely without any semblance of exaggeration, be described as such. Today, the Coast’s 70-plus golf courses are the highest number of any similar area in Andalucía, Spain or indeed Europe. They are distributed along 120 kilometres of coastline from the eastern border of Málaga province with Granada to Sotogrande in the west, just over the border into Cádiz province and the Campo de Gibraltar area. Marbella alone has 15, the most of any municipality in Spain, followed by the neighbouring municipalities of Mijas and Benahavis (the latter also having the highest number of courses per capita in Spain). Many have been designed by some of the most renowned names in golf, including legendary golf course architects Robert Trent Jones (Valderrama, Los Naranjos, Las Brisas, Marbella Golf & Country Club and Mijas Golf) and Spain’s own Javier Arana (Guadalmina, Río Real and Aloha), as well as star players Severiano Ballesteros (Los Arqueros) and Gary Player (El Paraiso).
STELLAR HISTORY It’s not just about quantity, however. Since Royal Sotogrande was the venue for the 1966 Spanish Open, the Costa del Sol has hosted dozens of European Tour and Ladies European Tour events. Iconic golfing moments over the past six decades have included World Cups at Las Brisas (1973 and 1989), two World Golf Championships and 16 Volvo Masters at Royal Valderrama, and three World Matchplay Championships at Finca Cortesín (in Casares municipality, west of Estepona). To date, the Costa del Sol’s most globally significant golfing showpiece was the 1997 Ryder Cup, when captain Seve Ballesteros led his European team to a riveting victory against the Americans at Valderrama, the first time the event had been held outside the UK or the US. History will also be made in 2023, when Finca Cortesín hosts the Solheim Cup, which pits Europe’s top women players against their American counterparts, for the first time in Spain. In the meantime, after the Aramco Team Series held at La Reserva de Sotogrande in August this year, the Ladies European Tour returns to the Coast from 25 to 28 November with the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España, following the Estrella Damm NA Andalucía Masters from 14 to 17 October at Valderrama on the men’s European Tour.

- We have really enjoyed it a lot – I’m living my dream. A year-round summer is something I couldn’t even dream of when I was little. I first visited the Costa del Sol in 2011 when my friend’s family bought an apartment there. Since then, I have visited every spring and all the time the feeling became stronger that I wanted to live on the Costa. Then, in 2017, I bought my own apartment. Osala played for the Finnish national team, had a long career at KHL with 2 championships and also spent a period in the NHL at the Washington Capitals. He started his golfing hobby 20 years ago, and since the end of his hockey career golf has taken over. Although hockey shots and golf swings are very different, the hockey background has also been helpful to his golf: - There are definitely benefits in having little more strength and explosiveness than most golfers, Osala says. When asked about his favourite golf courses, Osala mentions Ruuhikoski in Seinäjoki, Tornio Golf and Tali in Helsinki. On the Costa del Sol he highlights Santana Golf near La Cala, where he mainly practices, as an absolute favorite. In addition to golf, Osala says he also likes playing tennis and pádel and spends his time enjoying the area’s wonderful nature and delicious food. Although Osala’s development in golf has been extremely fast thanks to his professional and goal-oriented training, he does not aim to become a golf professional. - I don’t have many goals, but I do dream of being a really good senior player when I turn 50. In the near future, I simply hope my game can improve gradually – and certainly year after year. Break your own records and improve your stats.

LOS NARANJOS GOLF CLUB CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE IN MARBELLA
Opened in 1977, Los Naranjos offers golfers a richly multicultural welcome, with a distinctly Nordic touch. It is one of an elite group of courses on the Costa del Sol designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, and subsequent upgrades have maintained the essence of his classic original layout while adding major improvements. The course extends over 70 hectares of superb golfing land, including an orange grove that gave it its name. Trent Jones’ remit was to create a top championship course suitable for players of all levels, and he achieved that to perfection. In 1989, Severiano Ballesteros was beaten by José Rivero on the first hole of sudden-death in a play-off for the Spanish PGA Championship title, while one year earlier the club hosted the Marbella Ladies Open. Its Ladies European Tour history will come full circle from 25 to 28 November 2021 when it is the venue for the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España.

ROYAL LAS BRISAS CLUB IMMACULATE MA RBELLA COURSE WITH A VENERABLE HISTORY
Apart from Valderrama, no other club on the Costa del Sol has had as stellar an international tournament history as Royal Las Brisas. In 1973, at the time still known as “Nueva Andalucia”, the club hosted a memorable World Cup eventually won by the United States pairing of Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller. Later, in 1989, the re-named Las Brisas was the venue for a second World Cup, where Australia’s Wayne Grady and Peter Fowler triumphed. Another historic highlight was the 1987 Spanish Open (on the European Tour), which Nick Faldo won just months before becoming British Open champion for the first time. In recent years, Las Brisas has undergone a major upgrade – of both the course and the club’s other top-class amenities – to consolidate its objective of being “the private club of choice for those who appreciate an exceptional golf experience in a relaxing social environment”.

ALOHA GOLF CLUB GATEWAY TO MARBELLA’S GOLF VALLEY
Since its inauguration in 1975, Aloha has become established as a social and sporting haven for golfers from around the world. It is a private members club but also welcomes green-paying visitors at certain times. One memorable highlight was the 2007 Open de Andalucia won by Lee Westwood, who set the course record of 64 and later went on to become number one in the world.

The Costa del Golf story would be incomplete without giving Mijas Golf a prominent chapter. In the popular Costa del Sol area east of Marbella, this two-course club is a pioneer of international golf. Los Lagos was the first, built in 1984 and featuring numerous lakes (hence its name); while Los Olivos, which takes its name from the predominant olive trees, opened in 1984. STRAND PROPERTIES REA L ESTATE CONCEPT Sirena and Anssi Kiviranta were two of the founding partners of a very successful Finnish real estate concept Bo LKV. They participated in growing the business from scratch to a company of 200 employees and €23M turnover in less than five years. A capital investment company acquired the majority of Bo LKV in the autumn of 2019. In mutual understanding, the Kiviranta couple had the chance to start a real estate agency abroad under their own brand. The couple’s Finnish investment company Kiviranta Group Oy has established a Spanish subsidiary, Strand Properties in 2020. – We have a strong passion for changing the traditional real estate field, but this time we’re doing it abroad. Everyone who has read real estate ads on properties in the Costa del Sol area has surely noticed that more often than not the properties are sold with insufficient information and poor-quality images and almost always without a floor plan. In Finland, a real estate agent has to truly get to know the property and is also responsible for drafting the deeds of sale. In Spain, the agent’s legal responsibility is practically non-existent, and many are saying that the real estate business in the Costa del Sol is like the Wild Wild West where everyone hustles in their own way. For us, Spain is an interesting new environment in which to bring the
real estate business into the 2020s, and a significant opportunity as the market is ten times bigger than in Finland. Strand Properties offers services to both sellers and buyers. Through their partner networks, the number of brokered properties goes up into the thousands, and Strand Properties can help customers find the right property by carefully charting the customers’ wishes and using a learning property search service. For the sellers, the brokerage concept focusing on quality offers the fastest selling times and the best possible selling price. – We want to bring more reliability, transparency, and insightful marketing to the real estate business in the Costa del Sol. Most of our agents speak multiple languages fluently and have been successfully operating in the field for a long time. Many of the Strand Properties real estate agents have been the best salespeople in their previous jobs. We offer our agents a genuinely encouraging commission model with no monthly fees, and our agents operate independently under our brand. Strand Properties also offers a service concept for building developers, where the visual layout, modelling images, and marketing materials are created for the new building.

We also include these products in the images of the properties we’re brokering, which gives them great exposure. Property buyers, sellers and developers receive discounts on the products we represent, which brings strong synergy to these business activities. Finnish design is represented in the selection by brands such as Timberwise, BEdesign, Drop Design Pool, Tablebed, and Woodio, which was awarded the Design Deed of the Year prize in the autumn of 2019.
