The Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art:
One Man’s Vision Becomes Regional Event
Within the evolution of every successful ongoing music and
arts festival, there must be a force moving it towards success. For Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art, that force was Dr. Lee Minton, humanist and lover of the arts who was never content to simply take his place in the audience and listen. Dr. Minton organized the Minton Foundation in 1977, funded it, set its course and it has continued since his death in 2002.
Our Mission The Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to create and enhance cultural awareness and enrich the quality of life for residents and visitors by providing quality performances, programs, and educational opportunities in music and the arts. The Festival Board members, staff and volunteers are committed to the mission of the Festival and will competently, ethically and responsibly act in the best interest of achieving the organization’s mission at all times.
Our Values We believe in the value of the arts as an essential part of civilization and in its role of preserving accomplishments of humanity. We believe that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to be exposed to the arts and that PIFMA has a significant role and responsibility to the community in supporting the growth and development of the people we serve and in enhancing their quality of life by furthering their equality of opportunity to the arts.
8
At the young age of 50, Dr. Minton retired from his medical practice as an Ophthalmologist in Nashville, Tennessee, and bought a home on Pawleys Island. In 1991, the Festival of Music & Art at Pawleys Island began as a single performance under the watchful eye of Dr. Minton. A program at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Pawleys Island was organized and sponsored entirely by Dr. Minton and the Minton Foundation. “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, A Little Night Music” received such an overwhelming positive response that a second event was held in 1992. John Nelson, noted American conductor, led a program at All Saints Episcopal church called “Music of Praise.” On the evening prior, a program of Baroque and Romantic music was performed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. And so began the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art. From its humble beginnings, PIFMA has grown to a significant regional cultural event covering all genres of music and visual arts. Now overseen by an impressive Board of Directors guided by the vision and perseverance of one man – Dr. Lee Minton – PIFMA continues to evolve. His dream has become the dream of a united community – to create and enhance cultural awareness and enrich the quality of life for residents and visitors by providing quality performances, programs and educational opportunities in music and the arts. In 2002, after an extended period of illness and medical treatments, Dr. Minton passed, but his vision continues to inspire others who have kept his dream alive. This visionary man will long be remembered by the many musicians, protégés, artists, dancers, orchestra members, fellow directors and audience members whose lives he personally touched. Rarely has the Pawleys Island community had such a friend of the cultural arts and who has left such a lasting impact on its citizens.
ROOTED IN THE CAROLINAS and
ROOTING FOR THE CAROLINAS
Other stores work hard to sell you local this or local that, hoping no one notices they are owned by a ginormous corporation from who knows where. But we are truly your home grown, Carolinas-based grocery store. Since 1954, we’ve been the place where locals shop local. That’s more than starting a trend - it’s setting the standard.

Peabo Bryson is among the world’s most dynamic and gifted vocal talents. Over the course of a career spanning from the mid-`60s but truly igniting in the `70s, the 2x Grammy winner has amassed a fan base, critical acclaim, gold albums and an avalanche of awards by being one of the truly best friends a good song ever had…many of which he composed himself. From ballads that gracefully continued the legacy of sweet soul music such as “Feel the Fire” and “I’m So Into You” to chart-topping pop hits such as “If Ever You’re in My Arms Again” and “Can You Stop The Rain,” and a plethora of duet collaborations with artists ranging from singers Celine Dion (“Beauty & The Beast”), Regina Belle (“A Whole New World”) to Melissa Manchester (“Lovers After All”), instrumentalists Kenny G (“By The Time This Night is Over”) and Jim Brickman (“My Heart Belongs To You”), Peabo Bryson has proven himself as the consummate vocal professional. 39

[ The Doo Wop Project
[
7pm Saturday, October 15th Tickets $30 • $50
The Doo Wop Project begins at the beginning, tracing the evolution of Doo Wop from the classic sound of five guys singing tight harmonies on a street corner to the biggest hits on the radio today. Throughout the show DWP takes audiences on a journey from foundational tunes of groups like the Crests, Belmonts and Flamingos through their influences on the sounds of Smokey Robinson, the Temptations, and the Four Seasons all the way to Michael Jackson, Jason Mraz and Amy Winehouse. Featuring stars of Broadway’s smash hits Jersey Boys and Motown: The Musical with their hot band, The Doo Wop Project brings unparalleled authenticity of sound and vocal excellence to recreate – and in some cases entirely reimagine – some of the greatest music in American pop and rock history. Your audience will enjoy a night filled with harmonies and classic ‘60s hits such as Randy & The Rainbows’ “Denise”, Thurston Harris’ “Little Bitty Pretty One”, The Skyliners “Since I Don’t Have You”, The Capris’ “Morse Code of Love”, and many more. The show also includes doo-wop-inspired renditions of contemporary songs such as Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie”, Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel”, and Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours”.

John Walters Painted Piano
John Witzel Walters has created a work of art out of a Knabe Baby Grand Piano that was graciously donated by the Steinway Gallery of Charleston. This one-of-a-kind piano will be auctioned off during the Silent Auction at the Pawleys Island Wine & Food Gala. John Witzel Walters is a self-taught artist from South Carolina who uses acrylics to evoke thought and emotion through his dramatic art that takes colorful risks. Witzel’s art has been influenced by the eccentric life he has led, surviving both a shipwreck while working as a scuba diver in the Caribbean and the 2013 Georgetown Front Street Fire, where he lost his home, art and beloved dog in the flames. An award winning artist, he has been featured in several magazines, newspapers as well as winning the 2012 Arts International Competition and the 2012 and 2015 Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art Poster Contests.
