Originally from the eastern part of North Carolina, Jeff grew up in an artistic family, often observing his father paint the rural landscapes & coastal scenes. After moving to Asheville in the late 1990s, Jeff began painting the endless mountain views & dynamic street scenes of that area. Now he splits his time between the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina

and his little cottage on Folly Beach and loves to paint in both locations. Bold brush strokes give his paintings a feeling of texture and movement while luminous colors create a natural glow.

Pittman’s work has been widely exhibited in juried competitions, art galleries, and can be seen in private and corporate collections throughout the Carolinas and beyond.

• Visit a Charleston Area Farmers Market! •

Attracting visitors and locals alike, the Charleston Farmers Market is located in Marion Square, between King and Meeting Streets at the edge of Calhoun Street.

• MOJA Arts Festival • September 26 - October 6

MOJA Arts Festival, a celebration of African-American and Caribbean arts, returns to Charleston from September 26 through October 6.

Selected as one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events for many years, the MOJA Arts Festival promises an exciting lineup of events with a rich variety of traditional favorites. Nearly half of MOJA’s events are admissionfree, and the remaining events are offered at modest ticket prices.

Moja, a Swahili word meaning “One,” is the appropriate name for this festival celebration of harmony among all people in our community. The Festival highlights 12

the many African-American and Caribbean contributions to western and world cultures. MOJA’s wide range of events include visual arts, classical music, dance, gospel, jazz, poetry, R&B music, storytelling, theatre, children’s activities, traditional crafts, ethnic food, and much, more. Summer Fun for the Family!

Charleston County Parks offer over a dozen parks and facilities perfect for a peaceful retreat or a fun family outing, with endless ways to be active and enjoy the outdoors this summer. Best of all, the park system’s parks, events and activities are some of the most affordable in the area.

Many of the Charleston County Parks have admission fees of $1-$2, with many park amenities offered at low or no-cost. For a small fee, families can rent bicycles, pedal boats or kayaks at James Island, Mount Pleasant Palmetto Islands or North Charleston Wannamaker County Parks, and enjoy the parks’ 14

trails and waterways. All three parks also offer free off-leash dog parks and playgrounds for the little ones.

James Island and Wannamaker County Parks feature spray play areas, where children can splash and cool down, free of charge with park admission fee ($2 per person) as well as disc golf courses with equipment available for rent. The Wannamaker North Trail offers mountain biking trails carved out by local cyclists for $1. With Johns Island County Park entry ($1 per person), visitors can enjoy miles of walking and equestrian trails, or the park’s archery range. Or, try out the new 32,000-square-foot skate park, SK8 Charleston, on the peninsula,

where it’s just $3 to skate. Cast a line for some fishing at the Mount Pleasant or Folly Beach Piers for $5; discounts are available.

Friday night reggae concerts in the park this summer are only $10 per person and are guaranteed to get you in the island spirit.

Charleston County Parks are also known for their wide array of fun and affordable summertime events and entertainment options. The kid-friendly Summer Entertainment Series, on select dates in June through August, is held at James Island and Wannamaker County Parks and is just $5 per child. The series features magicians, musicians, live animals, and others, with themes differing each week.

What says summer in the South more than dancing to beach music in the ocean breeze on a scenic pier?

Live bands perform on the Mount Pleasant Pier on select Saturdays during the Shaggin’ on the Cooper series, and you can show off your shag moves at the Folly Beach Pier at the Friday night Moonlight Mixers. Each event is just $8 in advance or $10 at the gate.

Plan a day at Charles Towne Landing!

One of South Carolina’s beautiful State Parks, Charles Towne Landing has something for everyone in the family. History, animals, an exploration of the natural world and more await during your day at this unique park. If you are able to visit on the first Saturday of the month, you’ll experience the booming of cannons firing!

Charles Towne Landing introduces visitors to the earliest colonial history of Charleston. Interact with hands-on exhibits in the Visitor Center, talk to knowledgeable staff members, and take an audio tour on the self-guided history trail.

Guests can step aboard and tour the Adventure, Charleston’s only 17thcentury replica sailing ship, see cannons fired, or take a peek at 16

otters, bears, bison and more at the Animal Forest natural habitat zoo.

On July 6, August 3 or September 7, come introduce yourself to the magnificent bald eagle and listen to a harrowing tale of survival.

Through the combined and unified effort from a group of lawmakers, conservationists, biologists and scientists, the bald eagle was taken off the threatened and endangered list in 2007. The bald eagle species story is one of the best “comeback” conservation successes.

Maybank Highway to Wadmalaw Island!

Let's Take a Picnic!

Food eaten outdoors just tastes better. And sandwiches are perfect for picnics. Whether it’s peanut butter and jelly or something decadent and gourmet, if you pack it in a basket and head outside, it’s special.

Picnics can be anything you like, as long as it’s food you love.

Try a different twist on the traditional tuna by making salmon salad. You can use fresh fish grilled and cooled, or just pick up a can of salmon at the local grocery store.

Here’s a recipe we all love.

Salmon Salad From the Kitchen of Kim Howard 5-6 ounce can wild caught salmon 2-3 tablespoons mayonnaise ½ lemon-juiced 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh dill 2 tablespoons finely chopped scallions 1 tablespoon chopped roasted red peppers ¼ teaspoon garlic powder Salt and black pepper to taste.

Mix, using the lesser amount of mayonnaise and add more if needed.

This is delicious on hearty bread with a crunchy piece of romaine lettuce and juicy slice of ripe tomato, or served with crackers.

Magnolia Plantation & Gardens

Join Magnolia Plantation & Gardens in the 6th Annual Ladybug Release! On Saturday, July 20th, 200,000 ladybugs will be released in the gardens in an effort to help control other small, more harmful insects such as aphids and scale insects.

The event will be held from 9am - 2pm and the distribution of ladybugs will begin at approximately 10am with the arrival of a Volkswagen Beetle resembling a gigantic ladybug. Hundreds of children will then scatter throughout the gardens to find the perfect spot to release their share of ladybugs. The e ve n t will

also feature exhibits including nature displays, interactive activities, environmental organizations and face painting. It's a great way for children to learn how they can help preserve and protect our natural environment. Come dressed in your favorite ladybug costume and be a part of the costume contest! Prizes will be awarded for the following categories: children ages 3 and under, ages 4 to 6, ages 7 and up, and family/group. The contest will take place at about 11:30 am.

Paid garden admission is required to participate and children must be accompanied by an adult. Garden admission is $20 for adults, $10 for children 6 to 12 years and children 5 and under get in for free. Please note: complimentary passes will not be accepted for this special event.

In addition to traditional tours, try “Curated Tours, Garden Walks, and Talks.” In its third year, this series of tours will let guests dig deeper into what makes Charleston gardens so unique. From the interesting and largely sub-tropical plant material to the fresh designs, these gardens are sure to delight all of the senses. Led by professionals in the fields of horticulture and design,

guests will visit gardens that are rarely open to the public.

Experience “Haunts and Haints: Spirits Among Us,” a fascinating new event. Known as the Holy City for its many houses of worship, Charleston is also known for its many spirits. In addition to learning about our architecture and history, guests will hear about several notable spirits in our city. This tour is only offered on October 27, to bring out the darker side of Charleston for Halloween.

Founded in 1920, the Preservation Society of Charleston is the oldest community-based, membership, historic preservation organization in the United States of America, whose mission is to inspire the involvement of all who dwell in the Lowcountry to honor and respect Charleston’s material and cultural heritage.
