Cover Artist Salt Water Blues, by Candace Whittemore Lovely Candace Whittemore Lovely is an American impressionist painter known for her pleasing and peaceful views of contemporary American life, including landscapes of treasured locales and people at play in idyllic locations. Candace had the honor of painting First Lady Barbara Bush’s official White House portrait in 1990 and has been called “the Grand Dame of Boston Painters” by critics. She lives and works in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Candace’s artistic journey started in Vermont holding her first crayon. As a young child, “Candy” was often found coloring or playing nurse. When her artist mother refused to replenish the sugar pills Candy was dispensing to her brothers, but happily replenished her crayons, the path to being an artist was set.

Her mother chose crayons as an alternative to medications because art in itself is a healing therapy. Candace took this wisdom to heart and has incorporated this philosophy into her art throughout her career.

I love everything about summer, and when everyone around me is complaining about the heat, I’m reveling in it. And, to me, nothing says summer like a thunder storm rolling through after a hot, sultry day, encouraging everyone to stop and enjoy nature’s show while basking in the sudden drop in temperature. As much as I love the thunder and lightning, it’s what happens afterward that really excites me. When the storm gradually moves off shore, there is a subtle, yet lovely change in the light as the sun gradually peeks through the clouds. And if I’m anywhere near a window I immediately notice and, if at all possible, rush outside. This beautiful pause after a storm is what I call rainbow light. Somewhere, the combination of water and sun has caused one of nature’s most magnificent shows, and a huge arc of colors appears in the sky. And while I know this is a scientific phenomenon that is easily explained, a rainbow will always be magical to me. Afternoon storms mean the rainbow will most likely be over the water and, if I get outside in time, I can experience the fleeting colors over the creek in Pawleys. Seeing those vivid colors streaming across the sky always leaves me in awe of the power of nature. It really never gets old, and the rainbow energy is hard to explain unless you’ve experienced it. Even if I don’t actually see the rainbow, I know it’s there somewhere, and that’s usually enough to make me happy.

Enjoy all the beauty of a coastal South Carolina summer – especially thunder storms and rainbows.

Egg Boats

by Betsy L. Haase No one knew at the 4th of July picnic that my husband of almost 25 years had just walked out the door less than a day ago. Everyone believed the story he had to work that day as my teenage daughter and I arrived wearing denim and patriotic t-shirts from Old Navy bearing our usual contribution to the potluck.

The night before, I boiled a dozen large eggs, peeled away the shells, split the eggs into halves, and mashed the yolks with mayonnaise, a dash of honey mustard, liberal amounts of coarsely ground pepper, and a pinch of sea salt.

Ta-da! There were the “egg boats,” a name my daughter christened them with when she was younger. Each displayed a small toothpick waving a paper American flag. I carefully placed them in a red and white speckled, enamel dish where they slid into each other, wobbling – like me.

I realize now, many, many years later that keeping up appearances was of the utmost to me. As I look back, I can hardly believe that I didn’t make my apologies and take a rain check much less skip the deviled eggs. But just like at that cookout, I kept my chin up and my mouth shut. I just couldn’t get the words out, and when I did, I was very private and only confided my news to a handful of very close friends.

When my husband left on the 3rd of July, I had run out for bakery bread.

I returned in record time and in time enough to see him throwing his clothing into the back of his Ford van. I knew he was leaving; he had told our children the night before, but none of us knew when that might be.

I don’t think he actually knew it until he finally did.

would have been nice to lie on the bed for the day at the very least, but I had a teenage daughter in the next room, and I could hear her sobbing.

I got up and went down to the kitchen to prepare what we call a “French lunch”– a little feast of this and that, whatever might be in the refrigerator, from olives to veggies to cheese to rolled-up turkey or ham. French lunch is served on fancy plates with glass goblets and special paper napkins.

That night we went to see the display of fireworks by the lake in our town.

That’s what I remember.

I didn’t give myself any credit in those early days. I questioned my every move, my every behavior, my every decision. I was pretty hard on myself.

But I can see now that I was trying to keep my life and the life of my children moving forward. We certainly all took huge backward steps from time to time with the changes in our family and in our home life, but we were faced toward the future. I didn’t see that then.

It has been a long time since that happened. My ex-husband and I have become very close friends – a blessing when raising spirited children.

My daughter is old enough now to live on her own, attending her own functions and events.

Last summer, I hosted a little get-together around the 4th. When Emily arrived, she had prepared “egg boats”– complete with toothpick flags.

Making them does not stir memories of her dad or any leftover sadness over his leaving. Deviled eggs with toothpick flags is just what we do to signal the summer holidays because on these occasions we celebrate our family traditions and our time together.

My world was spinning out of control as I went up to our bed – now my bed and sat down. It probably

Rollin’ on the River

When Hugh and his family invited me, my husband Bob, and our nine-year-old son Max on a float trip down the Lower Neches River in Southeast Texas, I had misgivings. Canoes had always looked iffy to me – unstable and dangerous – and I didn’t know the first thing about rowing.

What would happen if we tipped over? Would the river have rapids? How would we steer the contraption? After reassurances from my husband and with Hugh’s vow that we wouldn’t encounter rough water, plus the promise of life jackets all around, I agreed to give canoeing a try. A third couple – Dave and Donna – would join us on the adventure, along with their chocolate Labrador retriever, Duke. We looked forward to a great outing with friends on a hot June day.

On the appointed morning, we traveled to the put-in spot in the Big Thicket National Preserve not far from Beaumont, Texas. Beams of sunshine filtered through the loblolly pine and water oak that shaded the river as we carried our canoes to the bank. Each family carefully loaded their boat with food, beer, water, towels, sunscreen and insect repellent, all sealed in plastic bags as suggested by Hugh. Dave already knew everything about canoeing, a fact he mentioned more than once, while educating the rest of us on the subject. He’d had plenty of experience as an Eagle Scout. From his place on the bank, Dave made sure his wife occupied their canoe’s proper seat for optimum weight distribution of the craft, and he stowed their supplies carefully amidships. He advised Max on the correct grip for his oar and demonstrated preferred rowing techniques for me. Bob rolled his eyes and exchanged a smirk with Hugh, but I nodded and tried to imitate Dave’s moves while still on dry land.

Hugh, his wife Susan, and their son Brett launched their boat from the river bank, and we climbed into our borrowed canoe and followed close behind. I gasped and gripped the boat’s hull when the canoe wobbled, but the water’s flow looked steady and gentle and I could see the river bottom. So far, so good. Even if we tipped over, I figured we’d be okay. Dave tugged his canoe into the stream, climbed aboard, and called for his dog.

Duke let out a joyous bark, bounded off the bank, and landed right in Dave’s lap. You would think our resident expert on canoeing might have considered the effect of a dog jumping into a canoe, wouldn’t you? Especially if that dog weighed almost as much as the expert’s wife.

Seconds later the canoe floated upside down in the river with Donna clinging to its hull. Dave lay sprawled half in, half out of the water, and Duke bounded back to the shore. The dog ran back and forth along the narrow sandbar and barked, clearly delighted. He sent a spray of water over us all when he shook. I can’t repeat what Dave shouted to his pet, nor Donna’s comments to her husband.

Did we laugh when Dave, Donna and the Lab were catapulted into the water? Did we chuckle as their oars and the plastic bags filled with their supplies floated downstream? No, not at first; but once we determined that everyone was okay, we couldn’t hold back our chuckles. Judging by Dave’s red face, we didn’t even need to tease him about his Eagle Scout expertise for him to grasp the situation’s irony.

With everyone’s help, Dave righted the canoe and retrieved most of his family’s supplies. He removed a towel from a sealed bag and pitched it to Donna, settled Duke in the bottom of their boat with a stern command, and they again pushed off from the bank into the middle of the stream.

We spent the rest of the warm summer day floating down the gentle river. With great blue herons and turtles for company, we skimmed over submerged logs and dodged low-hanging branches. We reveled in the river’s quiet beauty. My husband, son and I fell into a rhythm with our oars and relaxed as the current carried us downstream. Every once in a while someone would think of Dave’s catastrophe, start to giggle, and then we’d all end up laughing.

Eventually, even Dave joined in, but I noticed he didn’t offer any more sage advice or utter the words “Eagle Scout.”

Sun Sisters

From the moment Janie introduced herself, I knew we were going to be friends.

Both her husband and mine had just transferred to the company’s Long Island office from out of state and we were feeling awkward at a company party. We soon discovered that we were both married for a few years and, rather than looking for work in our new location, we were both thinking about starting a family. We also shared a love of the beach and were looking forward to spending some serious time that summer at Long Island’s famous ocean beaches. Before the night was over, we had plans to explore the various beaches on Fire Island, the barrier island along much of eastern Long Island’s south shore.

Although it was still cold at the beach in April, May, and June, the hypnotic sound of the ocean kept calling us back. We spent much of that spring walking the water’s edge, listening to the laughing gulls, and digging our toes into the fine white sand as we sat on our folding chairs and slowly shared our hopes and dreams. By June, we were sharing our concerns that neither of us had become pregnant yet, since we both expected it to happen right away. We traded books and magazine articles on pregnancy and parenting while we tried out baby names. No matter how anxious or disappointed either of us was, the warm summer sun and the cool ocean water would always relax us. It is absolutely impossible to walk along the shore, kicking at the surf and watching the birds soar and dive, without getting a smile on your face.

In mid-July, I suspected that I might be pregnant. Those were the days before home pregnancy tests, so I made a doctor’s appointment, but did not share that information with Janie. It had never occurred to me that one of us might get pregnant before the other, and I suddenly realized how hard that would be on us both. I wouldn’t say anything until I was certain it was true. When the doctor’s test confirmed my suspicions, I was ecstatic and wanted to share the news with both my husband and my best friend, but I made my husband swear not to tell anyone at work until I told Janie. It had to come from me.

Several weeks went by and I still hadn’t found the right way to tell Janie my good news. One day, as we walked in the low surf, I suddenly became ill right there at the water’s edge. “Oh, great,” I thought, “Only I would get morning sickness in the afternoon!”

right time to tell you. Are you okay? I’m really sorry!” The words I had been holding back came tumbling out all at once.

Janie laughed one of her totally uninhibited laughs that I had come to love.

“Don’t sweat it, sweetie. I just found out that I’m pregnant, too!”

The gulls squawked as we hugged each other, crying and laughing as the waves circled our feet. It turned out that our due dates were only two weeks apart. We would be sharing every aspect of our first pregnancies together. As the summer passed, we shared the odd changes in our bodies, both excited and a little afraid at the same time. We talked about nursery colors and themes, our parents’ reactions, and the changes we anticipated in our relationships with our husbands. By then, Janie and I were more sisters than friends, which was welcomed by us both, since neither of us had a sister of our own.

Thinking back, I realize how little we knew about the changes that parenthood would bring, and I’m so grateful for Janie. We were not only there for each other during our pregnancies, but we remained loyal friends through the years. As our families grew, our children came to see each other as part of an extended family, especially since none of our relatives lived nearby. Over the years, Janie and I, along with her two daughters and my two girls, spent many summer days at the ocean beaches, a favorite place for us all. The memories we created there still bring smiles to our faces and joy to our hearts.

Although our kids have grown, moved away, and have families of their own now, Janie, our daughters, and I try to plan a girls’ weekend at the beach at least once each summer. The beach is now on North Carolina’s beautiful Crystal Coast, but the ocean still offers us all a chance to reconnect with each other and with ourselves. For me, the feel of the sun on my skin, the smell of the salt air on a cool breeze, the roar of the surf, and the cries of the gulls immediately connect me to that first summer with Janie, when we both began our families and created an unbreakable bond. That is when we became sun sisters.

Janie eyed me suspiciously. “Is there something you need to tell me?” she teased.

However, there is still plenty of fun to be had with the original friends and the new group of women that had never met. Add in the mysterious murder, and this book has a little bit of everything for readers to enjoy.

One of the first audiobooks that I ever listened to was Hissy Fit, by Mary Kay Andrews. It was one of the very few books that made me laugh out loud! Her flare for southern sass was priceless. So, I was thrilled at the chance to read her latest book. Though not as funny, more on the poignant side, there were still scenes that had me chuckling. Her writing style is impressive and her stories are fun entertainment for the beach. And if you can’t spend the day, lying out in the sun, have no fear, the setting truly comes to life and you will feel as though you are part of the antics with the members of the High Tide gals!

Bring Me Back

He has now found solace in his life and is engaged to Ellen… who is Layla’s sister. The two of them are living an idyllic life, when suddenly Russian nesting dolls begin to pop-up everywhere. The dolls trace back to when the sisters were children, and Finn is being taunted by mysterious emails.

Could this mean that Layla is alive after all these years? If so, where has she been and who will Finn choose in the end?

This book is divided into sections. The first part is entirely told from Finn’s point of view, in the present and through his memories. Then the author brings in a new narrator so readers can hear two sides of the story.

The author has a gift for taking readers on a very twisted, winding path.

There are several sneaky characters in this book, all of whom readers will suspect at one point or another. The interchanging time periods and

narratives keep readers on their toes, as they try to guess the ending.

B. A. Paris has written three books now. The first, Behind Closed Doors, was absolutely thrilling. I read it in a few short hours. This book was entertaining. I enjoyed how each chapter unraveled another layer, like an onion. Yes, the love triangle aspect was a bit cliché, but I still kept reading to find out if my suspicions were right. (Every few chapters, one suspicion was proven wrong, another was right.) I don’t think I will ever be able to look at a set of Russian Nesting Dolls, without thinking of this story. This book was entertaining and very easy-to-read, making it perfect for a hot, summer day.

How To Care for Your Outdoor Furniture

One of the most important elements to creating an enjoyable, functional outdoor space is to buy quality furniture with attractive high performance fabrics. I always recommend when creating your space you look at the interior of your home and imagine “bringing the outside in” creating a flow throughout your home. Your outdoor furniture, from beach chairs and umbrellas to patio furniture and cushions, get a lot of wear in our temperate, sea air climate. Especially for beach furniture you should make sure the fabric is awning grade or marine acrylic grade for durability. The following tips will help extend the life of your furniture.

High Performance Fabrics used on patio cushions, beach umbrellas and chairs may be cleaned with the following: Combine one quart of warm water with one teaspoon dishwashing detergent (I usually recommend Dawn), add one tablespoon borax for cushions. Vacuum or shake off sand and dirt. With a soft bristle brush apply solution and let soak for at least 15 minutes and then rinse with hose. To prevent mildew allow to dry thoroughly before using or storing. If mildew becomes a problem use a solution of one cup bleach, two cups of dishwashing detergent, and one gallon water. Spray on entire piece and soak for 30 minutes let thoroughly dry. Please remember to wear rubber gloves when cleaning with bleach. We also recommend rinsing off chairs and umbrellas after every beach trip, and let dry completely before storing, preventing premature rusting and wood decay.

Wicker furniture should be cleaned at least once a year by misting with a garden hose. Choose a breezy day and let dry in the shade. If your wicker is not made from “all weather wicker” it’s only suitable for covered outdoor areas.

Resin or Plastic should be scrubbed with mild soap and water, rinse and dry. You can use the same solution to clean stains from nylon webbing and mesh.

Metal Furniture, such as wrought iron, and aluminum should also be cleaned with water and mild soap. Remove any scuffs with a nonabrasive cleaner and a soft cloth. If you live near salt water, furniture should be washed monthly.

Wood Furniture tends to weather naturally; however, it should be treated regularly to prevent decay. Once a year wash wood furniture with a solution of one tablespoon of bleach, five tablespoons Dawn, and a gallon of water and apply with a soft cloth. Rinse and let dry completely. Perform a hardware check once a year-tighten bolts and screws and replace hardware if necessary.

Cataract Surgery and the Police

Twenty-twenty vision was mine until age 42. The morning after I turned 42, I woke to blurry eyesight, not due to any celebratory libation the night before. I saw the optometrist. He diagnosed bifocals, and for the next twenty years every photo taken of me is of a bespectacled person.

As time passed, my prescriptions strengthened.

Twenty years later, on a late January night as I drove to Raleigh to give a dog and pony show on penning the personal essay, I found that the approaching headlights on Falls of the Neuse Road mimicked the starbursts in Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night. I couldn’t see. I heard folks honking. I wondered if I’d make it to the destination for my talk but also if I’d make it back home again – not in a box.

I went to see the optometrist. “I need stronger glasses – again,” I said, diagnosing myself. He used his instruments to peer into my orbs.

“You don’t,” he said.

“Oh, yes, I do. You would not believe the night I had a couple of weeks ago.” I launched into what I’m sure, in retrospect, was a long, boring narrative about the impolite drivers I encountered just because I was driving twenty miles below the speed limit with numerous brakings and making confusing turn signals.

A few months after the restoration of my vision for far-off things, my outof-state friends came to visit. While her husband went to a conference for two days, Beth stayed with me. Mike was en route back to my home that last day to pick up Beth when I had to make a phone call.

I didn’t recall the number but had it scribbled and taped on the inside of a cabinet above my phone. I didn’t have my reading glasses nearby and couldn’t remember where I’d left them. Nonetheless, I can sort of see without them. The number I was dialing began with our zip code here, 919. I pecked in the digits as I gazed at the scrap of paper on the cabinet, and I was a few numbers in before a voice came over the phone.

“What is your emergency?”

“Huh?” “What is your emergency, Ma’am?’

“No emergency. Sorry.” I hung up.

I proceeded to dial the number I had intended to reach, but this beeping noise started. It continued. I finally hit “Flash.”

“What you need is cataract surgery.”

“That’s for old people.”

“You hung up. This is 911 calling you back.”

“Tell it to your eyes.”

“I misdialed. I couldn’t find my glasses. Sorry.”

So, I had both eyes done one week apart in May. Hallelujah! I can see clearly now. My backyard pool, I discovered, isn’t covered in green algae; my white shirts don’t need extra doses of Clorox; and my husband isn’t as swarthy as I’ve believed him to look for the past twenty some years… he’s kind of ultra-white in places. Anyhow, cataract surgery is a blessing. Yet, just as every misfortune has a silver lining so does a blessing have a caveat: Now, I need reading glasses.

I never misplaced my glasses before because I needed my bifocals for everything, and so first thing in the morning before I popped out of bed, I’d reach over to my nightstand and grab my glasses and put them on the bridge of my nose before taking a step. At night, the glasses were

placed back in the same spot on the nightstand when I tucked in. I used to laugh at folks who’d lose their reading glasses and later discover they were on their heads. Such was my ignorance regarding the plight of those needing this kind of eyeglasses.

“Well, you shouldn’t hang up. We must send a deputy if you hang up.”

“Don’t send a deputy, please.” I said, “Bye” and hung up.

Mike arrived. I made them some lunch, and the three of us chatted for about an hour before they were to return to Atlanta. Mike had the car almost packed and was going to get Beth’s last bag when my two miniature dachshunds started barking. They rushed around the kitchen table frantically. Mike went to the front side door. “I thought I heard a knock,” he said.

“Oh, these dogs bark at anything–a twig hitting the window will set them off.”

“No one’s there,” Mike said, returning.

We sat down to have a bite when we heard loud knocking at the door to my garage. The dogs surged toward this door as Mike walked behind them. I followed Mike. He opened the door. There, down a few steps in my garage stood a burly deputy with some sort of walkie-talkie he was speaking into and an “all business” attitude.

“Hello, Deputy,” I said as I peeked out behind Mike, who is about a foot taller than I. “Are you, all right?” the deputy questioned, looking solicitous.

“Yes,” I said. Mike looked totally confused.

“Someone from here called 911, and we must come to check it out,” the deputy replied looking at us suspiciously.

“I told the operator I misdialed,” I said.

Still studying Mike with a dubious gaze, he said, “Someone might have coerced you to say that.”

Before I fully understood what he was implying, Beth popped up behind me and said, “She wasn’t wearing her reading glasses and hit 911 instead of 919.”

I guess the sight of two women with one man put his suspicions at ease.

When we returned into the house, I laughed. “Boy, do you think folks in their sixties usually have this much excitement in one day?”

My buddies soon left. I called them the next day to see how they fared driving down I-85 and if Atlanta had power restored from the outages caused by Irma and… if they’d been trailed by a squad car. But – I forgot to ask the most important question: Whatcha goin’ do when they come for you? Bad Boys! Bad Boys!

“You know they put formaldehyde in that stuff, don’t you?” My motherin-law asked, nodding at my can of diet soda.

Even though the word “formaldehyde” immediately took me back to Frog Dissection Day in middle school biology class, I grinned and took a gulp. “Then my insides should be very well-preserved,” I said with faux haughtiness.

Despite my joke, even I had to admit that my diet soda habit had gotten out of hand. At home, I was drinking multiple cans a day. When I went out, I often drove out of my way to go to the gas station with “the good ice.” Usually, I didn’t even need gas. I just went for the extra large diet soda with the teeny-tiny ice cubes that made my soda taste so great.

Yep, it had definitely gotten out of hand. I wanted to give it up, but I wasn’t sure if I could. I knew it wasn’t good for me, and I’d read articles that said that drinking diet soda made it more difficult to lose weight, and I’d been wanting to drop a few pounds. I knew I needed to make a change, but going cold turkey seemed impossible.

But I could at least cut back. I had a friend who made herself drink a certain amount of water each day before she drank any soda. My sister alternated between water and soda.

Something like that could work for me.

The problem was that I really hated drinking water.

The only way I could stand it was if it was ice cold. I tried freezing bottles of water, but then I read that freezing the plastic bottle causes it to release cancercausing chemicals into the water, making it even worse for me than my diet soda. I

tried just drinking glasses of ice water, but the ice melted too fast, leaving me with a glass of lukewarm water and a water ring on my wooden coffee table.

I decided that I needed to go shopping – my solution to nearly every problem I face – for an insulated cup.

I found a cute one at a drug store. It was a pretty shade of blue and it said, “Life is better in flip flops” on it. The lid had a pop top like a soda can. “Maybe the pop top will fool me into thinking I’m drinking soda,” I thought hopefully.

The cups were on sale, so I chose a second one. It was pink and it had little owls on it.

When I got home, I washed out the cups and then filled the blue one with ice and water. I made a deal with myself that I wouldn’t drink any soda until the insulated cup was empty. It seemed like a great plan.

Soon, the water was gone, but the ice remained. “Does this count as an empty cup?” I asked myself. I debated and then decided that it didn’t count. Since the ice in the cup had displaced the water, I hadn’t actually had a full cup of water. So I filled the cup again and drank it all again.

And there was still ice in my cup. I filled it and drank it a third time and a few tiny pieces of ice remained in the cup.

I sighed. My new insulated cup actually worked a little too well. I was going to have to drink a lot of water before I finally got my diet soda.

But maybe that was a good thing. I’d drank three cups of water in a short period of time, and surprisingly, I hadn’t really minded.

I started keeping a filled cup with me at all times, and I noticed that my water consumption had increased with very little effort. My diet soda consumption had decreased dramatically. I missed it, but not as much as I thought I would.

My husband and children started using the cups too, and I headed back to the drug store to buy more. It was the end of the summer and the cups were on clearance for 75 % off. I bought all they had.

“You used to walk around with a can of soda in your hand all the time,” a friend commented. “Now you’ve always got one of those water cups.”

My mom called me one day. She’d just been diagnosed with diabetes and she was beside herself. “The doctor told me I need to stop drinking soda, but I can’t,” she said. “I don’t know what to do.”

But I did. I mailed Mom an insulated cup. She’s hooked on them now too, and her A1C is right where her doctor wants it.

Last summer, my husband and I celebrated our anniversary at a resort in the Dominican Republic. Before we went, I researched travel advice for the island. “Take an insulated cup,” the website read. “It’s so hot there that your drink will melt before you even get from the bar to your beach chair. An insulated cup will help with that.”

And they did. They helped so much that other resort guests asked where we got the cups. They were really hoping we’d say the resort gift shop.

When I told them we’d brought them from home, many people took a photo of the cup so they could purchase them when they got back to the States.

This summer, my husband and I are returning to the Dominican Republic.

We are taking our children with us this time. We’re also taking an insulated cup for each person.

Two years ago, I set a goal to drink more water than diet soda. I thought it would be hard, miserable even. But like many things in life, having the right tools makes all the difference.

In this case, the right tool was a three-dollar insulated cup with a pop top on the lid.

And to the manufacturer of these cups, I think it’s time you start sending me some referral fees.

Margaret and the Diamond Key Mystery

One of the most fun activities when the pirate dogs are involved in an event is to find a child who the crew agrees needs a book.

They try to give their book to an unsuspecting little one with arrrrrr promise they will continue to read! The reaction is priceless.

Keeping the vents clean and clear in your home and appliances can have a big impact on your home’s heating and cooling costs.

The most important are your air conditioning vents. You’ve probably heard many times that you need to change this filter as often as every 30 days. The frequency depends on the quality of your filter, how much you use your AC system, and how much debris is regularly pulled into the intake. An AC system running efficiently is much less expensive than one running with a dirty filter. Once you determine if you need to replace or refresh your filter, make sure that the vents on your intake are clean and free of dust as well.

And out of nothing, and out of no way, a way will be made. -Michael Beckwith The Sasee crew recently enjoyed a fun day on a little known part of the Waccamaw River, and was left in awe of the beauty found just seven miles from North Myrtle Beach. Located on the northern end of the Waccamaw, we toured River Island Adventures, an adventure outfitter with dozens of fun activities. This beautiful site is the dream come true of Jeff Cline, self proclaimed “river rat” and wilderness expert.

Growing up in Surfside Beach, Jeff loved surfing and spending time near the ocean. It wasn’t until he and his best friend stayed in an Edisto River treehouse that Jeff fell in love with the river. “That is where the idea for River Island Adventures was born,” Jeff told me remembering.

A busy professional, Jeff and his mother own Palmetto Properties, a real estate company serving the Grand Strand area. His wife of nine years, Nicole, is a speech pathologist and has her own business, Young Talkers.

The couple also has two young children, Colton and Capri. But, Jeff had a dream and without the way or the means, he began his journey to make it happen.

When Jeff returned from his trip to the Edisto

River, he immediately began looking for property. “I went online and found a 48 acre island on the map. I had never seen the northern part of the Waccamaw River until I started looking for a place to create River Island Adventures,” Jeff told me laughing.

Jeff explored the area and fell in love, but there was only one problem.

None of the property he wanted was for sale and what was on the market was very expensive. Jeff went on with his story, saying, “I got the addresses of all the property owners and wrote each of them a letter asking them not only to sell to me, but to finance it as well!” As he put the 24 letters in the mailbox, Jeff said a prayer, asking for a way to make his dream a reality. “It wasn’t long until two gentlemen responded to my letters and were willing to owner finance the property!” This young entrepreneur was able to close on what would become River Island Adventures in February of 2016.

But acquiring the property was just the beginning. The amount of work required to make this beautiful area into a place where everyone could enjoy the wilderness of the Waccamaw was overwhelming. “I had one investor and the help of my friend Mike,” Jeff remembered. “For the first year and a half, it was just me out there working.”

With headwaters in the Lake Waccamaw area of North Carolina, the Waccamaw River joins with the Intracoastal Waterway near Bucksport and empties into the Atlantic near Georgetown. According to the

natural features. Jeff also offers extensive information to his guests about the river’s history and importance to an ecologically sound environment.

The Outpost of River Island Adventures is a beautiful, rustic area that has lots of fun activities. The one building houses an office and restroom facilities. Guests can enjoy a slack line, swurfer swing, fire pit and tent camping before ever setting foot in a boat. “I have recently set up women’s glamping sites at the outpost. We do everything from setting the tent up to cooking dinner over the camp fire.” Glampers will also be treated to a paddle downriver with plenty of time to stop, relax and enjoy an adult beverage if desired. “It’s a great way to enjoy the camping experience without any of the work.”

Waccamaw Rivers Foundation (www.winyahrivers.org), the Waccamaw River “supports recreational fishing and other water sports, provides drinking water, is a venue for tourism and camping, and enhances the lives of those who touch it through its beauty and serenity.”

Ramping up the excitement, Jeff offers Escape River Island Survivor-type challenges where participants are taken to the island and left to discover how to unlock the kayaks to return to the Outpost. “This has become a very popular activity,” Jeff told me as we walked through the beautiful wooded areas of River Island.

This fertile area was home to the Waccamaw Indians, a Siouan-speaking tribe whose territory and hunting grounds extended from around Lake Waccamaw in North Carolina, down the coast to the junction of the Pee Dee and Waccamaw Rivers. They are thought to have been semi nomadic river-dwellers who subsisted on hunting and some farming, often on high-ground “islands” along the Waccamaw River and adjacent swamps.

While European contact nearly wiped out these proud people, Jeff has evidence of their presence on his property. When visiting River Island Adventures, guests will see an Indian Trail Tree, a tree that was purposely bent over as a sapling, tied and held in a bent position throughout most of its young life. They were used to guide the Native Americans to a source of water, a good place to cross a river, a campsite or other important Next season, Jeff plans to offer a Mini-Survivor Season on the island. He is also building tree houses, yurts and permanent glamping sites, also on the island, with all the amenities of the Outpost and more.

The day the Sasee crew visited, Jeff gave us a tour in his comfortable pontoon boat, and we reveled in the beauty of this part of the river. The winding bends offer spectacular, natural vistas, plus the abundance of wildlife almost guarantees sightings of a wide variety of animals.

“This is completely different from any other river tour,” Jeff said as we made our way back from River Island. “And it’s just minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Myrtle Beach. It takes me less than 30 minutes to get here from my home in Surfside Beach.”

Wake Up Call

Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer are filled with cookouts, boating, swimming, sprawling out on the beach with a good book, ice cream, friends and relatives coming to visit – and did I mention ice cream? It really is the best time of the year!

But all the songs of summer are not always happy. Let me tell you about one of them. Everyone who knows me knows that I am a nature lover.

My nieces call me “Aunt Snow White!” I especially love all the birds that I have nurtured so lovingly with specialty birdseed in my own yard from the Painted Buntings, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Robins, Orioles and even Green Herons.

However, last summer there was a manic woodpecker that found his happy place in the rim of our chimney. For some reason, he loved pecking on the metal piece so erratically that he must have thought he was making a lovely song. Yet, he definitely was not, especially at five o’clock every morning.

decided to tackle this menace head-on. Out came the ladder and up on the rooftop he went with a very odd but practical solution. Chuck placed our chicken-wire crab trap upside down over the opening of the chimney.

Then we held our breath ‘till morning.

Bingo! No more steel drumming woodpecker song for us. It worked. Our neighbors laughed and mocked us for having such a decorative item on our roof, but we were sleeping like babies now so we did not care about their ridicule.

How long did we leave it up there, you ask? For the rest of the summer!

We were taking no chances that Woody might return.

So if any of y’all ever hear the roaring song of a psychotic woodpecker at five am, just come borrow our crab-trap.

Trust me friends, it works like a dream!

His chronic drumming on the rim would rock even the heaviest of sleeper out of bed, sounding like bullets exploding from a cannon. He not only scared the crap out of us, but the two cats and dog were “alarmed” by the disruptiveness of this perverted bird!

Oops, I forgot to tell you that we have a two-sided fireplace. One side opens to the living room/den and the other opens to our bedroom. Now you can understand how badly we wanted this bird gone.

We were patient. My husband and I tolerated it for over a week. But when a week turned into a month, we had enough of this early morning reveille!

I called the pest control folks, but they had no dealings with birds. I called Clemson Extension and they said to hang in there, he would probably be gone after mating season. I even talked to a chimney sweep who deals with birds nesting in the chimney, but he had never heard of a woodpecker pecking metal rather than wood. I called the Critter Chaser too, but he must have thought I was a lunatic and never called me back.

Too Much Sun Hurts!

Keep Kids Safe this Summer Summer means fun in the sun and in the water – and no one wants to miss out on the fun. Protect your kids with these tips from the CDC (www.cdc.gov).

Take sunscreen with you to reapply during the day, especially after your child swims or exercises. This applies to waterproof and water-resistant products as well.

Just a few serious sunburns can increase your child’s risk of skin cancer later in life. Kids don’t have to be at the pool, beach, or on vacation to get too much sun. Their skin needs protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays whenever they’re outdoors.

Follow the directions on the package for using a sunscreen product on babies less than 6 months old. All products do not have the same ingredients; if you or your child’s skin reacts badly to one product, try another one or call a doctor. Your baby’s best defense against sunburn is avoiding the sun or staying in the shade.

Seek shade. UV rays are strongest and most harmful during midday, so it’s best to plan indoor activities then. If this is not possible, seek shade under a tree, an umbrella, or a pop-up tent.

Cover up. When possible, long-sleeved shirts and long pants and skirts can provide protection from UV rays. Clothes made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection. Some clothing certified under international standards comes with information on its ultraviolet protection factor.

Get a hat. Hats that shade the face, scalp, ears, and neck are easy to use and give great protection. Baseball caps are popular among kids, but they don’t protect their ears and neck. If your child chooses a cap, be sure to protect exposed areas with sunscreen.

Wear sunglasses. They protect your child’s eyes from UV rays, which can lead to cataracts later in life. Look for sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible.

Apply sunscreen. Use sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and UVA and UVB (broad spectrum) protection every time your child goes outside. For the best protection, apply sunscreen generously 30 minutes before going outdoors. Don’t forget to protect ears, noses, lips, and the tops of feet.

Keep in mind, sunscreen is not meant to allow kids to spend more time in the sun than they would otherwise. Try combining sunscreen with other options to prevent UV damage.

Turning pink? Unprotected skin can be damaged by the sun’s UV rays in as little as 15 minutes. Yet it can take up to 12 hours for skin to show the full effect of sun exposure. So, if your child’s skin looks “a little pink” today, it may be burned tomorrow morning. To prevent further burning, get your child out of the sun.

Tan? There’s no other way to say it–tanning your skin is damaging skin.

Any change in the color of your child’s skin after time outside–whether sunburn or suntan–indicates damage from UV rays.

Cool and cloudy? Children still need protection. UV rays, not the temperature, do the damage. Clouds do not block UV rays, they filter them–and sometimes only slightly.

Oops! Kids often get sunburned when they are outdoors unprotected for longer than expected. Remember to plan ahead, and keep sun protection handy–in your car, bag, or child’s backpack.
