Women of Courage 8, by Kelly Simpson Kelly Simpson was born in Placerville, California. She began painting with her grandmother at an early age and has been creating art ever since. She primarily works with acrylic paints on canvas. Kelly loves painting colorful, diverse worlds where people of all cultures come together under the same sun and celebrate as one, embracing similarities and appreciating differences. She sees art as a form of therapy for her soul, which is where the name “Kelly’s Art From the Soul” came from. She has had exhibitions throughout the northwest and now has an international following. She currently lives and teaches in Portland, Oregon.

letter from the editor As a lifelong lover of the summer season, July is a month I always enjoy – starting with celebrating our country on July 4th with picnics, the beach, parades and more. We’re also very excited to be celebrating Sasee’s birthday in this issue! For 15 years Sasee has been delighting readers with great ads, fun editorial and the work of some really amazing writers from all over the country. Writers put words on paper because they love it, because they are drawn to the computer or notebook to make sense of their life and its ups and downs. The beauty of a perfect sentence, a sublime paragraph – these are what we reach for when we sit down to write. Sasee writers are an amazingly talented group – many have written and published books and even more have been included in various, popular anthologies. This talented group willingly opens a door into their lives, making us giggle or laugh out loud or even shed a few tears – but no matter the subject we can always relate to the experience of being a woman. I am so grateful to each one of you for opening your heart and sharing the beauty of your words. For 15 years, you have made Sasee richer and more meaningful. Ma Raison d’ Etre! by Erika Hoffman

“You’re to blame!” The voice on the line scolded, half laughing. “For what?” I answered. “My life!” “Huh?” “And my four siblings’ lives, too!” “Hold on, now!” “Mom told us the story. We exist solely because of you.” “Carol, what on earth…” “Dad changed his mind. When he married, he told Mom flatly he wanted no kids, no how, no way.” “Really?” Soon after this phone conversation, I received a letter from Aunt Trudy. It was a couple of days following my last non-descript birthday. I held a sneaky suspicion my cousin Carol told her how I’d thrown myself a pity party on the actual day because no one seemed prepared to celebrate it, and how I finally became weary of planning my own preparations, baking my own cake, continuing my own tradition. My twentysomething kids had bought me presents, but I slipped off to bed at 10 pm without opening them; my busy spouse pulled something (from his stash of stuff he finds on sale and pulls out when an occasion arrives), and he wrapped it himself and tucked it under a pillow near me. Yet I ignored it. It turned out my 89 year old father who lives with us whom I take care of announced glumly that night that he too felt bad he’d forgotten what day it was! Of course, that is pretty much how his life goes these days. I e-mailed my cousin my resolution that from here on out, I wasn’t going to 8 be around for my birthday.

Instead, I vowed I’d skip town for “Erika’s fun day” rather than hang around, anticipating a surprise, getting disappointed and then resentful and schlepping off to bed, dissatisfied and feeling sorry for myself. Next year, I’ll go to a spa! I complained about all this in my cyber missive to my Western cousin, but added, “I was over it!” The day had passed. Next year will be different I pledged to myself, as I always do! Within the week of my “special day,” I received a basket of flowers from my aunt and then a long letter. My aunt wrote: “Your uncle Tom found you precious, beautiful, ideal! Tom’s step dad told me when we married that Tom would never want children. I asked him why. He said Tom saw the kids his step brothers and sisters were raising, and he found them wild, disrespectful and stupid.” My aunt added, “Quite a few of ‘em wound up in prison.” “Your uncle was raised by a step father and had no biological siblings of his own, and the step ones that came when his step father remarried a woman with eight kids were cruel to Tom and made fun of his being a boy scout, a church regular and hell bent on educating himself.” I read on. “After we were married a few years, we went east to visit. You weren’t even two.” My uncle and aunt lived in Arizona in 1953, and my folks and grandparents lived in New Jersey. I’d heard before how Uncle Tom loved playing with me. “You changed Tom’s opinion about children. He wanted a child as pretty, sweet, loving and fun to be around as you. See what an impression you made – even at 18 months! I am grateful you were such a lovely child!” I had to smile at that as I never thought of myself that way. I always figured my sister as the “lovely, photogenic child” and me as “the ingrate.” I read on. “I always wanted children and was happy to have five of them. And it was because you were so special! Love, Aunt Trudy.” So, now I understand that my being born affected the birth of at least five more people – cousins – and most likely two more – my younger siblings – and who knows how many

countless others who got a gander at the adorable, well-behaved paradigm of toddlerhood I was! According to my dad’s gushing sister, I was a walking, talking antidote to birth control! I had to chuckle! My aunt’s message was the best kind of birthday present – not some last minute rush job; an afterthought; a find at a red dot special; not something I’ll later lose, use up or break. It’s a present from the heart for the heart. My mother – who worked hard as a high school teacher; who was an only child with elder care falling only on her shoulders; who stood by my dad through good days and those bleak days when he lost his job; who stressed providing her own children with superior educations above all else including her own wants – died 25 years ago. No one can replace her. Yet, since my mom’s passing, I have found solace, guidance and joy in the presence and wisdom of women my mother’s age. Just as a substitute can never fill-in completely for a dedicated classroom teacher, there are instructors who do a more than adequate job at moving the curriculum forward while encouraging the charges in their temporary care. So too, in our lives, there exist those “momma subs” who may flit in and out and appear just in the nick-of-time to rescue a daughter who feels a bit alone, neglected and underappreciated. These mothers, though not our natural moms, must be thanked, too, for picking up the slack and providing that measure of comfort to a gal, no matter how long in the tooth that gal becomes or how long she’s been mothering others, herself. Everyone wants that “Atta, Boy!” cheer parents provide from the sidelines. Everyone wants to be remembered and appreciated on one’s birthday if not on any other day of the year! Who remembers that day more than one’s mother? And when one’s mommy is no longer there then…

All this time I thought I was the ugly duckling only to bloom later during my teen years. Instead, I may have reached my apex of influence at the ripe old age of 18 months! And didn’t even know it! Shopping at consignment stores is exciting and a great way to get high quality merchandise for a much lower cost. While thrift stores are primarily charitable donation sites – think yard sale type merchandise – consignment is where the consignors are selling their better quality items and receive a commission from the sale. Christmas in July by Diane DeVaughn Stokes

Ah, July. This is a very important month for my adorable husband Chuck and me. It was July 28, 1983, when we had our first date. Well, it really wasn’t a date at all. It was a “Christmas in July” celebration at the Holiday Inn in Florence, South Carolina, and our fellow employees at WPDE-TV 15 were all going to be at the big bash. Chuck worked in the production department making TV commercials, and I was the talk-show host and producer and commercial spokesperson, so we had been working together for the past seven months since he finished his masters at USC and arrived at his very first post-college gig. When Chuck first came to the station, I had a boyfriend of almost five years. He was a great guy but very jealous and possessive, which drove me nuts! It was a constant on again, off again relationship. But the more Chuck and I worked together, and the more he flirted with me, the more I was melting and realizing that this guy was something special. We had so much in common when we were out producing commercials for the station or when he was running camera for my TV show. Soon I knew that I had to break away from my current love interest and free myself up to follow my heart. Luckily, “Mr. Wrong” agreed it wasn’t working. I went for over a month before telling anyone at the station about the split, because I needed time to breathe and study carefully what was playing out with Chuck. And I prayed about it. And prayed some more. Frankly, I had made some bad mistakes about the men I had dated in the past, and it scared the living daylights out of me that I would make another big mistake as I was falling in love so fast. Besides, I have always heard that dating someone you work with can be trouble if it all does not work out. So now you are ready for the “Christmas in July” saga. That night I arrived at the party and everyone wondered where my

boyfriend was, and I decided to spill the beans that the relationship was over. My female teammates giggled and said that when Chuck arrives, he would be thrilled. And yes he was. We danced all night, even to the Christmas music. There was no snow of course, but I felt warm and fuzzy like a kid waiting for Santa in the middle of a Currier & Ives painting. But midnight approached, I reminded Chuck that I had to look good for my live show at noon the next day. He walked me to my car, followed me home to make sure I arrived safely, and asked me if he could come in for coffee. I hesitated, until he blinked those gorgeous blue eyes at me and said it would help to sober him up! Once inside, he laughed and said he did not drink coffee but just wanted the night to continue. We talked till three and then upon leaving he said, “Don’t worry I am not going to kiss you because I can tell you are scared to death. But how about on Sunday when I come back from celebrating my grandmother’s seventy-fifth birthday, I come over and we grill some steaks?” Yes, he was right. I was scared. And I wondered whether he was just baiting me with that Grandmother line! But you know the rest of the story. We have been together for thirty-three wonderful years, marrying on September 29, 1984, and we still celebrate “Christmas in July” every year on July 28. We call it our “Monthaversary.” For us Christmas comes twice a year, and it’s always so magical!!!

Teagle, the Bug-Killing Beagle by Diane Stark

“Where are we going, Mom?” My siblings and I asked from the backseat of our woody station wagon.

“We’ve been calling him Teagle. It’s a cross between terrier and beagle.”

But Mom just smiled like she had a big secret.

Mom nodded and then turned to us kids. “What do you think of that little guy?”

Finally, she stopped the car at a place called the Humane Society. “Where are we?” I asked. Mom smiled again. “You kids have been begging for a dog. Let’s go pick one.” After much happy dancing, we went inside to choose our pet. My siblings and I looked around, searching for the cutest, friendliestlooking dog. But Mom had a different idea. “Which dog has the least time left?” She asked the volunteer quietly. The volunteer pointed at a small fuzzy dog with big floppy ears. Mom studied the dog. “Is he a beagle?” She shook her head. “He’s got beagle ears, but he’s fuzzy like a terrier.” The volunteer smiled.

To be honest, there were cuter dogs in the shelter that day. But every time one of us kids tried to show Mom one of them, she just directed us back to the beagle terrier mix. “I really like that one,” she said about 100 times that day. Finally, it became clear that when Mom had told us to choose our pet, she’d meant that we had to choose the one she liked. And clearly, the one she liked was Teagle. Years later, Mom agreed that there were cuter dogs in the shelter that day. “But he was the one who needed us the most,” she said. Turns out, we needed Teagle too. One day, about six months after we’d gotten Teagle, my siblings, the neighbor kids, and I were playing hide-and-seek in our basement. At first, everyone tried to coax Teagle into hiding with them, but he was too rambunctious and gave away our hiding spots. But we discovered that he was actually very good at finding people. It was my turn to be “it,” so I enlisted Teagle’s help. Together we found everyone but my older brother, Mike. We wandered around the basement, calling his name. “Sniff him out, Teagle,” I said. We were just about to give up when Mike came flying out from behind some old boxes, crying and waving his hands in the air. “What’s wrong?” we asked him. “Wasp nest,” he screamed. “I already got stung once.” Earlier that summer, Mike had wound up in the emergency room after being stung multiple times. He was allergic, but we hadn’t known until that day. It had been scary, watching him swell up and gasp for breath. None of us wanted it to happen again. “Go upstairs and get Mom,” I told him. “And don’t you come back down here!” As we devised a plot to get the wasp nest outside without being stung, Teagle took matters into his own paws. He started barking and then ran behind the boxes where Mike had been hiding.

We watched from afar as the little dog picked up a wasp between his teeth and shook it. His huge ears flapped in the air with his vigorous movements. After shaking the wasp, he’d toss his head and throw it on the ground. If it moved, he’d pick it up and shake it again. If not, he’d find another wasp to shake.

“Your dog plays fetch? Well, our dog saved my brother’s life,” we’d say.

“Teagle is killing the wasps!” We said. “He knows Mike is allergic and he’s saving him!”

We saved him. And whether he meant to or not, he saved us too.

Teagle might not have been the cutest dog at the shelter that day, but he was the best dog there.

By the time Mom came downstairs with the insect spray, Teagle had killed most of the wasps. And he’d solidified his place as a hero in our family. That was the first time I watched Teagle kill a wasp, but it wasn’t the last. In fact, he had a thing for killing all flying insects. Over the years, I watched him shake a housefly, a bumble bee and even a lady bug. While deep down, we knew that Teagle couldn’t have really known about Mike’s allergy, my siblings and I bragged about that incident every chance we got.

To get the best shots of your family, to capture the moment for a lifetime, there are some important things that can help you do just that every single time. First tip, skip the posing, keep it real. While shooting images of your family, keep the camera close at hand and you will see many opportunities for capturing your loved ones and friends naturally. You don’t need to interrupt the moment by telling everyone to smile. If you want to get your subjects attention, simply wait for the perfect moment, frame your shot and call their name. Your images will be natural and the moments will be true. Try to avoid having the sun directly behind you when shooting otherwise your subjects will be squinting when they look up to the camera. Shady spots like a porch, beach umbrella or under a tree convey the feel and beauty of the season. Repeat after me, “I will never again use direct flash!” Direct flash is that bright little flash on your camera that causes those lovely demon eyes and, even worse, flattens an image, distracting from the emotion and subject you are trying to capture. So what do you do instead? You need the fastest lens you have available to you and learn to use it. Even our phones today will have an app that will allow you to control settings on the camera. If this is what you are using, you will want to use a higher ISO (think of this as old school film speed). Also, work with what the world around you is providing. Backlighting is beautiful and can create a very soft and natural look in your images. If you are inside use the light from windows and even soft lamps within the room. One more tip; forget the word “center” when it comes to your photos. When framing your image think of an imaginary tic tac toe board (or hashtag for those under 45). Your main subject should be located on one of the cross sections of the lines of that imaginary tic tac toe board. This is called the “rule of thirds” in photography. If you’ve always shot center this is going to seem strange but once you see the difference in your images you will forget about shooting any other way. Lastly, two things I tell every single client GET IN THE SHOT! That means your family isn’t well documented unless you are in some shots as well. The images you take are not just for you but for your children and grandchildren. Secondly, get those shots OFF YOUR COMPUTER! Your children do not want to search through digital archives. They want tangible memories, pages to turn or photos to hold. These are your memories. Cherish them.

Well, it’s summertime again, and we are all out enjoying our fun in the sun, in the salt water and the sand. I love beach days. But there’s nothing that makes me cringe more than seeing a dog on the beach during the summer. And I’ll tell you why…

Dogs can overheat so easily. Their core body temperatures are normally 100-101 degrees Fahrenheit. The only way they can dissipate heat is through panting and sweating through the pads of their feet. They are built to conserve heat and are not efficient at releasing heat. Higher body temps, with a full coat of hair and a hot summer day, can lead to disaster. Heat stroke is a very serious condition and is considered an emergency. Clinical signs can escalate within minutes. Recognizing the signs and knowing what to do will help save your dog’s life. Early clinical signs include: • Excessive or loud panting • Extreme thirst • Vomiting • Bright red tongue • Pale gums • Thick saliva • Increased heart rate • Dehydration • Watery diarrhea Worsening signs include: • Difficulty breathing • Purple gums • Fatigue/lethargy • Disorientation/confusion • Collapse If you notice that your dog is having difficulty with any of these signs, there are a few things that you can do. 1. Remove the dog from the heat. Find A/C or shade. Restrict their exercise. 2. Allow the dog to drink cool water as long as there is no vomiting. No sports drinks. No ice water. Or wet the tongue, mouth and gums with cool tepid water. 3. Cool the dog with water. Spray with the hose, especially the paws and the head. 4. Rub the pads of the feet with alcohol 5. Contact the emergency veterinarian. You can prevent all of the above signs and avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke all together by leaving your dog at home and being aware of conditions that exacerbate overheating. Certain breeds with short snouts can’t breathe on a good day, much less on a hot day. Don’t leave your dog in a car in the summertime, even if the windows are cracked. Provide shade and water and don’t cover or confine your dog in an enclosed kennel outside. Allow your dog to swim or hose him down often. Also, allow your dog to rest if he’s working in the heat. Here’s to All the Sasee Ladies by Connie Barnard

Well loved by readers, Connie Barnard was one of the first to grace Sasee with her fascinating interviews and stories. This month, to our great delight, Connie agreed to return to us with an update on her life! rest of us. Why vacation on a luxury cruise ship with hundreds of other happy folks when you can be one of a handful of those who get to spend weeks on a huge, flat boat with corrugated crates stacked high upon its back? You may have seen these ships docked in Charleston harbor or out on the ocean, bearing names like CMA-CGM or MSC proudly painted on their hulls. Somehow, from our Air Force days, I understood that they were responsible for our household goods showing up at distant ports where we were assigned, but gladly I had never given a thought to the process involved. He discovered, however, that a handful of regular folks could also book passage on some of these ships. And so it goes that we came to find ourselves among those lucky few.

What an honor it is to have been associated with Sasee since its first issue when a pair of brave and adventurous sisters created a monthly magazine spotlighting area people and events. What a pleasure it was for me, an old English teacher, to hone my composition skills via my “Southern Snaps” column until I was sidelined by a scary combo of vision problems which reduced my writing efforts to an occasional piece. Several of these have centered on my crazy husband and our around-theworld adventures as passengers on freighter ships – yes, freighter ships! For this special edition of Sasee, I was encouraged to share memories of our most recent journey and to attempt to answer the questions: how, where, and most of all: why?

We have now traveled via freighter ship, not once, not twice, but three times. And I must say that each of these has been the adventure of a lifetime – in a good kind of way. This most recent trip was our favorite so far, perhaps because the memory of it is still vivid. We boarded the German ship MSC Carouge at the Port of Miami and 35 days later disembarked in Fort Lauderdale after visiting 12 various ports in Italy, Spain and Portugal.

These guys view life a bit differently from the

Accommodations on all three of the ships were both comfortable and reasonable, with an average charge of around $100 per person per day including meals. On our most recent trip we had a nicely furnished suite with ocean views, a private bath, refrigerator and daily cleaning service. The ship also had several lounges with televisions for viewing DVDs, a computer room for sending and receiving daily e-mails and news updates, and a small gym. Most days we spent several hours on the ship’s bridge watching the captain and crew navigate through the open seas. Please note: this type of travel is not for those who need to be entertained. We loaded our iPads with books and games, but what we actually enjoyed most was solitude and the rare opportunity to power down our lives.

One was a 60 year old German kindergarten teacher traveling to visit his sister who had married an American soldier and lived in a tiny town in Georgia. The other passenger was a 20 year old Israeli-American college student returning from a kibbutz. Immediately I adopted him as one of my own. We also became friends with the ship’s crew, particularly its Ukrainian captain who longed greatly for his family during the many months at sea. I will always treasure his words on our last day aboard ship when he shared that we had changed his view about Americans whom he had considered to be rich and rude. And, as always, we returned home changed in many ways as well. Gioia Tauro, Italy Our time in each port varied, depending on how long it took to off-load and re-load the ship’s cargo, but in most stops we had at least 12 - 24 hours ashore to explore. At smaller ports we could just walk in to the local town. Others involved a taxi ride, often arranged by the ship’s local agent. On this particular trip, we got to experience Gibraltar, Pompeii, Naples, Barcelona, Valencia – and some special little spots I’d never heard of. In one of these, Gioia Tauro in Italy, our cab driver got his sister to open her restaurant in the middle of the afternoon to accommodate two crazy Americans who could not stay up late enough to dine with the locals at 9 pm. As with most experiences in life, it is the people who make things memorable. Because there were just a few people on board the ship, we got to know most of them very well. This included two other passengers.

was born and raised deep in the heart of Dixie – in the South Georgia town of Albany. While in college at the University of Georgia she married her high school sweetheart, Howard, and spent the next thirty years traveling the world as an Air Force wife. An English teacher by trade, Connie taught wherever they were stationed, the most exotic of which was a year at Leavenworth Prison – which she refers to as the ultimate gated community. While Howard was assigned to Myrtle Beach Air Force Base in the 1980s, the Barnards bought a shabby old beach house in Surfside which they re-did and moved into permanently upon his retirement from the Air Force in 1996. They have two adult children and five grandchildren, all of whom are blessed to live in South Carolina.

Making the Most of Summer’s Bounty By Diane Kelchner

One of most people’s favorite things about summer is the abundance of fresh produce. And, the best place to find the freshest and best selection is at your local produce stand or truck, where everything comes straight from the field to your table. Peaches are always a favorite, and the free stone variety will be widely available this month. When buying, choose firm to ripe fruit unless you want to eat them the same day. Always leave peaches on the counter until they are perfectly ripe. Then, you can put the uneaten fruit in the refrigerator for a short time. At K & M Produce Truck, my husband, James, and I sell McBee peaches – as most people would agree, they are really the best. This month, almost all local vegetables will be at their peak. It is very important to choose firm, shiny vegetables – shiny means fresh. If a vegetable is dull looking, it’s days old. I’ve had people mention to me that our vegetables are so pretty. That’s because they’re new I tell them! When buying fresh shelled butterbeans and peas, always make sure they’ve been shelled the day you buy them, and that they’ve been kept cool – if not they’ll sour. Your okra should be small, pretty and green for the best flavor. Through about mid-July, there will be plenty of corn. The corn starts to dry up at the tips of the cob as the summer gets hotter and more humid. July is a great time to eat local watermelons, too. Again, look for shiny skin and a hollow sound when you thump it. Cantaloupes are good now – they should smell sweet like bubble gum. With all fresh vegetables, buy just before you are ready to cook and eat them. Don’t pick up that squash on Monday to cook on Saturday – wait until Thursday or Friday to shop for the weekend. Fresh vegetables lose nutrients after a few days. And, know what to refrigerate and not to refrigerate. Never put fresh tomatoes in the fridge, but cucumbers, squash, green beans, etc., can be kept in the crisper drawer. Lengthy cold storage takes away flavor and freshness – if you’ve ever bought peaches in the off season that sat on your counter and rotted without ever ripening, they were left too long in cold storage.

The Roller Rink, Revisited by Lynne Brown

“Roller skating?” My friend asked, her mouth puckering a little bit. “I don’t know, it’s been maybe…twenty five years since I’ve done that.” “Me too. It will be fun,” I said, not sure it would but hoping so. “Isn’t it just like riding a bike?” I was looking for some new entertainment and since I was now in my forties, I had a hankering for something that would make me feel young again. Or at least younger. My husband and I are pretty active, but we’d started to become sedentary, offering too many excuses for not exercising which can equal too many extra pounds.

Splits? I made a skating date for that Friday night. Our friends joined us and when we walked into the worn-out carpet, disco lights, loud teenagers, and swishing of wheels against the wooden floor, it was as though not one day had passed since junior high.

I remembered how much I liked to roller skate as a kid. I’d go up and down our block all day until the sun set and I could barely see the sidewalk anymore, my feet hot and aching, and my knees raw from the many tumbles I took when my confidence exceeded my ability. But eventually, I got good enough to go to the skating rink where I learned to dance and skate backwards. It was also where I learned how truly awkward the age of 12 could be. Every time the lights dimmed for couples skate, I tried not to look around, but I always did, anxious for the cutest and best skater to invite me out. When they didn’t, I’d huddle in a corner eating milk duds and nachos and pretending I didn’t care. I found a roller rink within driving distance and told my husband my idea.

“As a matter of fact, I have my own pair of skates. They’re around here somewhere.” He spun in place a few times. “I used to be able to do the splits.”

“Skating, yeah,” he said with a slight note of nostalgia. “I used to be really g o o d .” He’s full of surprises.

We all put on our rented skates (except my husband who managed to find his pair from college in the garage, stuck behind two gallons of paint) and tentatively wobbled to the hand-rail. “This could be disastrous,” I said to my friend whose kids had already jetted out in front of us and fallen almost immediately. “Or it could be the most fun we’ve had in a long time.” We began by careening around groups of girls who were holding onto each other for dear life, kids producing high pitched yelps as they ran into the railing, and a few hot shots who zoomed in an out of the crowd. But after about five loops we got our sea legs, and we were skating, really skating, like we remembered. Not only that, but we were better than the young ones. I realized all those years of not having video games or 3,000 TV channels to subdue us into a vegetative state during our childhood meant we did active things, like roller skating (in almost any kind of road condition) and it all came back to us. Yes, just like riding a bike. Since the DJ was taking requests, I approached the booth. A sixteen year old with a wide smile and flop of brown hair stood up and leaned down to ask me what I wanted to hear. “How about, ‘Play that Funky Music’… you know, for the older people.” His incredibly wide smile got even wider. “Adult skate everybody,” the young man crooned from his DJ stand. “You can only be on the floor if you are over the age of twenty.” That left exactly five of us. As my requested song started, almost everyone in the

place jammed themselves up against the skate wall, watching my husband and I, our two friends, and an older gentlemen with enough old school funk in his skates to time warp us to 1976, go round and round to the Wild Cherry smash hit. The couples skate was next and I got all sentimental and excited that I finally had a partner. The best skater and cutest boy in the room came to dance with me. It may have taken 36 years, but it finally happened. He skated backwards and wrapped his arm around me. I blushed. I might have even squealed. It was delightful.

But we are all nearing 50 and what we used to be able to do all night, we could only do for about an hour. My husband strained his hamstring, I got a colossal blister, and we were all winded and ready for ice cream far sooner than we should have been. But it was worth it. When my husband and I were taking our skates off, a couple of girls started to giggle. “You guys are really good skaters,” they gushed as they hurried past us. There was something about being validated by a couple of tweens that made the night extra special. The whole affair definitely made me feel young again, okay, younger and we’ve already made another skating date, especially since next time my husband promised to try the splits.

Why We Run by Melissa Face

When my husband and I signed up for a 5k race last winter, the first question our kids asked us was if we were going to win. Our older child, Evan, was especially concerned about how we were going to do in the race. “Well, do you think you will come in second?” Evan asked. “Or third?” We explained to him that there were hundreds of people in the race and that many of them had been running a lot longer than we had. We told him that we just wanted to do our best and finish and that it didn’t matter what place we came in because that is not why we run. “Why do you do it, then, if you don’t want to win?” Evan continued. My husband and I talked with him about the health benefits of running (for us, it’s more of a jog) and the fact that it’s something that we both enjoy doing together. We also explained that there is a great sense of accomplishment in preparing for and completing a race. We told him that we like saving our race bibs, collecting medals, tracking our finish times and trying to do better each time we run. “I want to do one!” Evan exclaimed. “I already run some at school in gym, so I’m ready!” While we knew that Evan wasn’t quite ready for a 3-mile race, we thought he could handle something shorter. So when my alma mater hosted a 5k and kids fun run, we asked Evan if he was still interested.

“Yes! Sign me up,” he said. “I want to be an athlete.” We registered, paid our fees, and when race morning arrived, the three of us got ready together. Evan’s fun run was first, and after some stretching exercises with the other children, the kids were on their way. We watched as the children took off down the road and saw that Evan was trailing behind. At first, my heart sunk just a little. “What if he came in last place?” I wondered. “Would he not want to do it again?” I hoped that my conversation with him about why I run had stuck with him and that he wouldn’t care how he compared to the others. I hoped that he would just be happy with his own accomplishment like his dad and I are with ours, but I know that a child’s perspective can be very different from an adult’s. We couldn’t see Evan for a large portion of the race, but we were waiting, cameras ready, for him to cross the finish line. The first thing we noticed was a look of true determination on his face. His cheeks were red, his arms were pumping, and even though his legs were short, his spirit was enormous. Evan beamed with pride when he was given his medal at the end of his race, and he immediately placed it around his neck. Then he and his grandfather watched and cheered as my husband and I ran our 5k.

After our races, we ate snacks and watched the awards ceremony. None of us received an official award, but we all felt like champions. Evan had successfully completed his first race, and my husband and I had achieved personal records. And what made it even better was that we had shared the experience with our child. Later that night, I peeked in Evan’s room to see if he had gone to bed. He was standing by his dresser, taking pictures of his medal. I couldn’t make out everything he was saying, but I did hear him announce, “I guess this means I’m a real athlete now.”

We’ll see how it goes. She may be able to walk the whole thing, or my husband might have to carry her across the finish line. Either way, we’ve found something that we like to do as a family. Races are fun, spirited events that often include music, free goodies and food. Running and jogging are great for physical health and improving self-confidence, and you don’t even have to win to feel great about yourself. That is why we run.

My husband and I were pleased with the way Evan reacted to his first race experience. He never mentioned that he was one of the last kids to finish (in his defense, he was also one of the youngest), and we didn’t bring it up either. He is focused on his new athlete status, and he is anxious to run another race. So, we are registered for another event later this summer. This time we are including our three-year-old, Delaney. Like a typical little sister, she saw Evan’s medal and wanted one of her own. We told her the only way to get one is to run a race. She seems excited about running, aside from the fact that she has to wear socks.

I’ve been to all sorts of outdoor concerts – symphony orchestras playing show tunes beneath a gazebo by the sea, opera arias sung from band shells in a park, impromptu guitar and banjo duos twanging in a village square, but none of them could ever compare to a little concert I attended in 1968: The Woodstock Music and Art Fair. Word had gotten around that over thirty bands would be performing for three days at a small town in upstate New York. The news reported that young people from all over the country were intending to make the pilgrimage. My girlfriend and I decided we had to go. “Here, put this on,” my girlfriend grinned as she handed me a gold lamé pirate outfit that she borrowed from the college theater costume room. “You’ll look groovy.” “Groovy? I’ll look like Captain Hook! You want us to be followed around for three days by a crocodile with a clock in its stomach?” I said as she squeezed into a harem girl getup. “This is a concert, not a costume party,” I reasoned. We finally settled on jeans and t-shirts. “What are you going to eat?” my mother bemoaned. “Where will you sleep? Why don’t you wait a minute? I’ll pack you a nice cooler of sandwiches. A thermos of coffee.” “Got to split, Mom,” I smiled as I threw a handful of blankets and a five pound bag of apples into the car. “What if it rains? Do you have an umbrella?” she called out as we sped off under clear blue skies. I flashed her the peace sign. In no time, we had reached the New York Thruway. The toll taker leaned out from his booth. “Don’t rush folks. Traffic is backed up for twenty-seven miles.” The highway looked just like a parking lot. Our short little trip took more than six hours. As we reached the festival, the fields of Max Yasgur’s farm were already being transformed as thousands of people began to congregate. The hills were alive with the sound of music. Bearded bikers roared in on hogs. Saffron-sashed

Hare Krishna devotees chanted. School buses painted in psychedelic patterns rolled to a stop. Girls paraded around in fishnet blouses that looked more like basketball nets. A flood of tie-dye seemed to explode like hippie fireworks. Men wore earrings like women. Women wore headbands and smeared their face with Day-Glo war paint like Native Americans. Native Americans wore cowboy hats like . . . cowboys. And cowboys wore football jerseys from Dallas. Jewelry punctured noses, ears, belly buttons. Long hairs, short hairs, shaved heads. This place had it all. “You see?” my girlfriend rolled her eyes. “Our costumes would have fit perfectly.” She was right. We would have probably just blended in. The only way we could possibly have attracted anyone’s attention in this crowd would have been to . . . set ourselves on fire. And the only reason that would have gotten anyone’s attention was because everyone I met was looking for a light! There were pastel-colored tents that looked straight out of the Arabian nights. Flags and banners blew in the breeze as beach balls were playfully batted by joyful people. Every race, color and creed talked, danced, laughed, shared, and even had time to listen to some of the music. To tell the truth, I barely remember what acts did perform. The show around me was so much more entertaining than the one on stage. The sun shined down on half a million people, and all seemed right with the world. Then the rains came. The skies began to slowly change to gray as the wind picked up and a drizzle started to fall, just as my mother had predicted. Despite thousands of voices chanting “no rain, no rain,” the skies opened up. Grassy hills quickly changed to mud, and though we made a vain

attempt to shield ourselves from the downpour, we eventually gave up, accepting the soaking as we huddled together, the puddles splashing around us. There we stayed, happy just to be a part of the grandest outdoor concert in history. At the end of three days, like weary warriors , exhausted, joyful, spent, we folded our tents, packed up our tales of Woodstock, said our goodbyes and headed back home . . . back to the world we’d all come from.

In 1994, a Woodstock reunion was being organized to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the festival. I wondered if it was possible to capture the true feeling of an event that seemed so far in the past. My brother, who was too young to have gone to Woodstock, insisted we take the trip. As we hit the traffic on the New York Thruway, a feeling of nostalgia came over me. Memories of the summer of love began to return and my hopes grew . . . and then we got to Woodstock. Where once rows of Volkswagen bugs and paisley painted buses were parked, now there were lines of BMWs and RVs. The old country roads were replaced with shiny black asphalt. Where a blanket of thousands once covered the countryside, pristine, rolling, grassy hills now rose all around us. Small circles of middle-aged people wearing Docker pants, designer jeans and loafers, sipped merlot from plastic cups as a handful of local bands went unnoticed in the background. My brother took it all in, shrugged his shoulders and smiled. “Woodshlock?” I gave him the peace sign. “Right arm, brother. Outta state.”
