Cover Artist Kathryn’s Song, by Michael J. O’Connell Michael J. O’Connell, originally of Johnson City, New York, is an artist residing in Clearwater, Florida. A graduate of the Tampa Tech School of Art and Design, Michael began his professional career as an airbrush artist at Tampa’s Busch Gardens. His designs and paintings can be seen throughout the Tampa Bay area and have been used for several national events as well. A self-taught contemporary painter, his bold use of colors and imagery make his paintings both versatile and memorable. Although his work can also be described as abstract, Michael says “I want everyone to see something in each painting which they can relate to. I try to keep my work open to everyone’s interpretation so they can connect to each piece on a personal level.”

As I write this, most of the Sasee crew is breathing a huge sigh of relief and getting back to normal after being out of work for nearly a week while waiting on Hurricane Florence to make her way through. And, even though our staff was very fortunate to have missed the worst of this crazy blow, many others are now waiting and watching as flood waters continue to rise. Even as you read this, families in our community are displaced and/or cleaning up flood waters. Please consider donating your time and money to help.

I didn’t evacuate this time, even though I was packed and ready, and at first spent a lot of time listening to weather reports that were alternately terrifying and excruciatingly boring. When I was told to write my name and social security number on my stomach with a permanent marker so I could be identified after my horrific death by wind and water, I decided I’d had enough and turned off the television. And turned on the music. After singing at the top of my lungs and dancing around the house for about 30 minutes, my mood was completely changed. My positive attitude and belief that I could handle whatever came along had been restored by Missy Elliot, Imagine Dragons and the Beatles.

I did continue to monitor the weather, albeit in brief spurts, and stayed alert until the danger of flood and high wind passed. But, for the rest of the week the music stayed on, playing softly in the background or out loud for the occasional dance party. And I survived.

Michael’s work has received numerous awards, including the 2014 Jacksonville Jazz Festival Poster Winner, the 2014, 2016 & 2017 Tampa Bay Lightning Celebration of the Arts and the 2018 Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art Poster Winner.

Music Under a Tennessee Moon

Ivan sat on the stump of an old maple. It was almost midnight.

He let his dobro sing as only that instrument can do. To his right a grand white oak grew with branches arched, having spent its long decades graciously with no competition for the sun. Just beyond its branches sat the moon, a misty crescent that winked down on the Tennessee grass.

As the bass player, I give musicians the structure they need to pick and glide, bow and strum. As I wrap my arms around my instrument and dance with it, I can feel the vibrations of each note through its curved back. Its rich curly maple has a warm reddish tint like the mating of summer peaches and plums. After a main course of bluegrass, I love to do a blues walking line or bow a melancholy intro.

Gene and I stood in that grass, he on guitar and me on bass, completing the musical trio. We were flattered that Ivan, one of the best musicians and instructors at music camp, had chosen to meet up with us for one last jam. He’d exchanged CDs earlier with Gene and even offered to play on our next one. This was far more than we could have hoped for – an offer of friendship and musical collaboration. Not long ago I would’ve been lost trying to play new songs without preparation or practice. Yet here we were, not merely making it work, but creating music that was sweet enough to send up through those trees to the night owl above.

During this past week in Tennessee, we’ve been drinking in seven days of Americana music at a camp that draws people from California to Ontario, Iowa to Florida. Days are spent in class, where we focus on instrumental techniques. Evenings we attend concerts by the instructors, all accomplished musicians, in a new concert hall with the latest equipment.

The sound has been terrific. Each performance is fresh, as guitar and mandolin, fiddle and bass find their places in the onstage improvisation that each musician has mastered. We’ve been hearing the best.

Though we’d shared music during our courtship, Gene and I hadn’t played much together during our first two decades of marriage. But once we began practicing together again, I entered into a new world, one with a musical classroom filled with subjects to explore and musicians to meet. And so I go from one subject to the next, training my fingers with daily practice on bass, my ears with intervals and chord software, and my voice by singing harmony to homemade CD tracks. We started meeting a whole new world of people who chose the heavy labor of learning an instrument in their free time, who listened to old time and bluegrass, country and folk, who hosted music parties with homemade potluck meals and jams around woodstoves and campfires.

In this political world divided by red and blue, we’ve connected musically with people across the spectrum. They are there, at jams, music camps and festivals. Some musicians have grand horse farms and leave their jewelry at home. Some are professors taking a break from academics. Others mine coal, drive trucks, sell auto parts. Some pray before we eat together. Some don’t.

But we all talk of the last song we learned, the new pick or instrument we’ve discovered. And then we get out our instruments and find songs to share.

The biggest surprise, though, was my chance to play on that same curtained stage. Each concert begins with a half hour open mic, and we decided to sign up. But this wasn’t like our first open mic five years earlier, playing in a crowded café against the sounds of the espresso machine and laughing conversation. Here was professional lighting, a sound crew to help with setup, and an audience of three hundred there to listen.

As we found our places under the lights, I looked out over the crowd and saw new friends. I joked briefly in the mic while Gene finished tuning, and was startled to hear my voice in the great hall. We played his coal mining song, and I watched the audience respond to the tug of the lyrics.

I ignored the thumping in my chest and, after we finished, floated off stage – at least as much as one can float while carrying an instrument larger than oneself.

The next day Ivan introduced himself, and a newly minted friendship began. By Saturday, when he joined us after the evening’s concert for a musical rendezvous, I thought of the steps that had carried me to that moment. Maybe it was the Tennessee moon, or maybe the dobro. Maybe it was the friendship, or maybe the memory of that recent night on stage.

But that was midnight music I could not have imagined and will not soon forget.

A Hero for Halloween

“What do you want to be for Halloween this year?” I asked my then four-year-old son, Nathan.

“Captain America,” he replied without missing a beat.

“Our last name is Stark though,” I said. “I think it would be really cool if you were Iron Man because his real name is Tony Stark.”

“You’ll have to choose something else.”

“But why?”

I realized that for the life of me, I couldn’t think of a valid reason why a child could not dress up as Captain America three Halloweens in a row.

“Nope. I’m dressing up as Captain America.”

I sighed. “But remember how Iron Man’s real name is Tony Stark? You could be Iron Man’s little brother, Nathan Stark. It would be so cool.”

I’ve always been the kind of mom who believes in choosing her battles, so we went to the store and purchased a Captain America costume.

He folded his arms. “I really want to be Captain America.”

The next year, when Nathan was five, I asked him what he wanted to be for Halloween.

“Captain America,” he replied again.

“Are you sure? You were Captain America last year. Wouldn’t you rather be something else?”

He shook his head and folded his arms across his chest.

And that’s when it happened. A single tear slipped down my son’s cheek.

Was I really going to make my son cry over a Halloween costume?

I gathered him in my arms. “All right, Nate. It should be your decision, and if you want to be Captain America again this year, you can.”

I found last year’s costume in the closet and helped Nathan put it on.

Then we both started laughing. It was skin tight and about two inches too short.

It was clear he’d made up his mind.

“Oh, well, at least it will save me some money,” I thought. But when I pulled last year’s Captain America costume out of the closet, I could tell it was going to be too small on my growing boy.

“I guess I need a new one again,” Nathan said, smiling.

So we went to the store and purchased another Captain America costume, this one a size larger than last year’s.

“I like your Pikachu costume,” Nathan told the little boy.

The next Halloween, when Nathan was six, I crossed my fingers and asked him what costume he wanted for Halloween.

Nathan nodded proudly. “This is my third year as Captain America.”

You’ll never guess what he said.

I liked this little boy already.

“Nathan, you cannot be Captain America for Halloween three years in a row,” I said.

“No, I like being Captain America.”

“Why?” “Well, because…”

“Because why?”

“Nathan, please, can’t you choose something else?”

So we went to the store and bought a third Captain America costume. As I paid for it, I hoped our Captain America costume collection wouldn’t continue to grow.

On Halloween night, Nathan put on his costume to go trick-or-treating.

As we were walking, he spotted one of his friends from school.

The boy smiled. “And I like your… Hey, weren’t you Captain America last year?”

“Don’t you want to dress up as something different?”

The boy shrugged. “His movies are cool.”

“Yeah, but that’s not why I like dressing up as him. Captain America is a soldier, and my daddy was a soldier. And today is his birthday.”

“Your dad’s birthday is Halloween? That’s awesome. Presents and candy in the same day!”

I didn’t hear the rest of their conversation. I was too busy digesting what Nathan had said. I’d never guessed that his Captain America obsession had anything to do with my husband’s military service. Tears filled my eyes as I remembered how many times I’d tried to change his mind and make him feel as though there was something wrong with dressing as Captain America for three years in a row.

There was nothing at all wrong with it. After all, my husband dressed in camo for eight years, and many men serve our country for far longer than that. And every one of them is a hero, and not a fictional one like Captain America.

But just as I had to let him choose his own Halloween costume, when the time comes, I’ll need to let go and allow him to decide on his own career path. No matter what he chooses, I’ll be incredibly proud of him and always concerned for his well-being.

I don’t want him to grow up and leave home, but I know that he – like all of our children – will be in God’s hands when they can’t be in our arms.

Later, when Nathan and I were alone, I apologized to him. “I didn’t know that you wanted to be Captain America to be like Daddy.”

He nodded. “He’s my hero. And it’s his birthday.”

The tears were back, but Nathan was too excited to notice.

“When I grow up, I think I’m going to be a soldier. Either that or a paleontologist.”

I smiled. Nathan loved dinosaurs almost as much as Captain America costumes.

Today, Nathan is nine years old. We haven’t purchased another Captain America costume, but Nathan still wants to be either a paleontologist or a soldier. If he decides on the former, I’m not sure he’ll be able to find a job. But if he chooses the latter, my fears for him will be far more serious.

Wedding Reception Meltdown

Most people cry at weddings. I think they were designed for us to do exactly that, especially if you consider the sappy classical or romantic music that is played. Purging is therapeutic, and therefore going to a wedding beats paying a psychiatrist for time spent on the couch! But no one cries at the reception. Except me, but I am getting ahead of myself!

curvaceous bride-to-be. Add to that the handsome prince swooping in on a white horse to take her hand at the altar and voila – it’s real life fairytale.

As a wedding begins, we usually find ourselves observing the bridesmaid’s dresses, recalling the thousands of dollars we spent in past years wearing bridesmaids dresses that we hated, and only wore once, because they were too frilly, too matronly, a bad color… just plain wrong! That is truly something to cry about!

But no one ever loses complete control like I did at a wedding reception for a friend twenty years ago. It all started when Debbie and her father got up to dance, and the band played and sang a song that was very familiar to me. You see my mom use to sing it to me often, as she tucked me into bed many moons ago. However, the vocalist sang “Daddy’s Little Girl.” I found that so odd, since I was so sure the real lyrics were “Mommy’s Little Girl.” I thought how sweet, the band changed the lyrics for this particular wedding.

After being in six weddings during my college years, I finally said no to brides to be, “Let me throw you a bridal shower instead!” Yes, I was always so practical.

However, when my younger sister got married, I had no choice. She chose the most beautiful black and white strapless bridesmaid’s dresses and as her matron of honor, she told me I could add a strap to mine if I wanted.

“You’re my angel of Christmas, Mommy’s pot of gold.

You’re mommy’s little girl to have and hold.

You’re sugar, you’re spice.

You’re everything nice.

Cause you’re mommy’s little girl!”

All of you who know me, realize what a challenge this was for me, as my top is, and always has been, “over the top,” which kept me from ever wearing a halter, much less a strapless dress. But heck, if all the other younger-than-me bridesmaids were going to look sexy and sassy so was I. My uncle declared it my “coming out” party, and boy was I ever coming out of the top of that dress! And this whole event surely made me cry, as I was thrilled for my sister’s happiness, but I also could not breathe in the heavily underwired body suit and body tape that was giving me an uplift rather than a down-drift!

The next tear-jerking part of a wedding ceremony is watching that beautiful, young curvaceous bride walk down the aisle with her proud father remembering when we ourselves were the beautiful, young,

Later, when the band stopped playing while the bride cut the cake, I went up and asked the singer about the song and he showed me the sheet music.

It truly was “Daddy’s Little Girl.” Well, seeing it in print made me lose it right then and there. The tears flowed like Niagara Falls as I realized for the first time ever, that my mom ad libbed her own words to the song.

There was no daddy in our lives as he chose to leave us when I was nine months old. This realization just caught hold of my heart and my voice.

I could not talk, only cry. Cry, nothing, I was hysterical as I walked back towards my assigned seat without even thanking the singer. He looked into my raccoon eyes as I was starting to look like Tammy Faye Baker with black mascara smeared two inches below my lashes.

I was a basket case of mush.

I could not even tell my husband what was wrong. The words would not come. And for a talk-show host that is pretty bad! I just could not wait to get out of there and to go home to call my mom. (This was before cell phones.) When she answered, I scared her half to death as she heard me crying, but I assured her they were happy and very grateful tears for the “Mommy’s Little Girl” song lyrics she genuinely created to fit our personal situation when I was a child.

And then she sweetly sang it to me over the phone, “You’re my angel of Christmas, Mommy’s pot of gold. You’re mommy’s little girl to have and hold. You’re sugar, you’re spice. You’re everything nice. Cause you’re mommy’s little girl!”

Then we both cried simultaneously for at least ten minutes in joyous celebration of the most beautiful mother-daughter bond in the universe.

I have never read any Lisa Patton books before, but I have heard incredible things about her book, Whistlin’ Dixie in a Nor’Easter. After reading, Rush, I have added the entire Dixie trilogy to my wish list. I will also admit I had limited knowledge of Ole Miss, and I was pleased that I could “see” and “feel” the campus, while reading. I look forward to discovering more of her books in the future.

A Discovery of Witches (All Souls’ Trilogy #1)

Diana Bishop is a descendant from a long line of incredible witches, but wants nothing to do with her gifts. Yet, while in the library doing research she discovers an ancient tome on sorcery. What Diana doesn’t realize is that her discovery has unleashed a world filled with vampires, witches and daemons. Diana falls for a vampire named Matthew and together the two must solve the mystery of the ancient tome.

This book reads like a classic Halloween movie. There is romance, adventure, crazy antics, and a quest to save the world from evil spirits from a mysterious old book. One should always be aware of what they might discover in a book. The author provides a lot of background on each character that will hopefully come into play with the next book. The book is choked full of descriptions so the scenes come to life. Readers will be able to spot references to other, well-known vampire novels and will definitely want the second book to dive into immediately.

Okay, so I think you can guess why I am sharing this book with you, this month…

(Happy Halloween!) However, I have had this title on my wish list for several years… why? Let’s see, it is a book about a book that originates in a library with a main character who is enhancing her desire to learn about science and history. I am not normally a sci-fi or fantasy reader, but everyone I have talked to has raved about this series. Yes, this book had some tedious chapters, but the ending has me desperately wishing I had the second book to read! I look forward to traveling back in time, with Shadow of Night.

Mother-Son Dance

The first time I watched a child of mine before the altar say, “I do,” I wondered where all the time I was supposed to have with him, as my son and I as his mom, had gone. In my mind, the years, like pages of a calendar fluttering by in a gust of wind, reeled past as I watched him kneeling next to a red-headed beauty in layers of white. I knit my brow trying to recall the day he started kindergarten. Did I cry then as I returned to the car without him? I squinted at the crucifix above the priest as I searched my memory for recollections of his baptism. I gazed at my husband’s bowed head and pondered what he was thinking now as our son married.

Random thoughts galloped by as I tried to corral them and listen to the Catholic priest’s message. I remembered when I got a call from his brother Henry telling me the ambulance had just picked Erik up after Erik’s friend, horse-playing, pushed him through the plate glass window in our den. In the emergency room, Erik didn’t cry as I stared down at the Harry Potter gash with blood oozing across his forehead. After watching the blood pump out of the wound in time with Erik’s heartbeat, his brother hurriedly skirted out of the room before he fainted. “Tell Daddy I’m sorry about the window,” Erik said, as his sister reached for his hand. Next, I thought about this young man as a ten-year-old coming home from summer camp with an eye infection which caused a trip to the ophthalmologist to have the abscess removed. He didn’t complain. I remembered the shower door closing on his finger and the mole removal from his stomach.

Erik is the third born of four. Our oldest child, a son, consumed our attention, the attention of both sets of grandparents, the attention of neighbors, friends and community. Our second son excelled at school, sports and popularity. He was verbally aggressive at the dinner table. He was confident in all things. Our girl was our baby – pampered, pretty, fashionably dressed. Some might say spoiled, a princess. This boy child now leaving us for a bride, a life of his own, remained the quiet one – the kid who wanted to help us, who didn’t cause a ruckus, who had few demands.

I felt I barely knew him. At 25, about to take a vow, he’d no longer be my baby boy. He was another woman’s man. Was I ready?

As I clutched my son and moved my heavy feet while listening to Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World,” I thought how Mother-Son wedding dances last interminably, and yet raising a son from infancy to manhood whizzes by in the blink of a wet eye.

Then, I thought about his second-grade teacher coming to me and saying that Erik was in a fight with the class bully who had bullied Erik’s friend. The bully was larger than Erik. Happily, Erik came out unscathed. I recalled Dad telling me about taking Erik to Europe with him, and although Erik was only nine and the other kids vacationing with their grandparents were much older, Dad glowed as he stated emphatically that Erik was the leader of the pack. I remember Erik at age 14 accepting my idea to pull him out of public school to take him to a more demanding prep school, even though he’d miss his many

When you meet with a caterer, the first thing you discuss is your budget. And any good caterer will do a tasting free of charge and this is where you tweak your menu – add something here, take something away there. Brides should meet with at least two caterers to get different options. A reliable caterer with a good reputation will ensure that the food you have at your tasting is the same quality as will be served at your reception.

Today, most brides do food stations usually set up in the four corners of the room. It gives a much better flow rather than having your guests stand in a long line.

Dessert bars are a lot of fun. One of the more popular is a s‘mores bar. We pack sterno cans in rocks set in galvanized steel containers for the flame. Then, we put marshmallows on skewers in a container filled with sand. Then top it off with white chocolate, dark chocolate, milk chocolate and peanut butter cups – and don’t forget the graham crackers!

Another popular dessert is a candy station. A lot of brides are using these as wedding favors. We display a large variety of candy in glass decanters – and it’s fun candy like you ate as a child, like bazooka, old fashioned licorice, etc. Brides will have either boxes or pretty plastic bags for guests to fill and take home.

In the fall we do a lot of hot apple cider bars with fresh sliced apples and cinnamon sticks. Or, for winter weddings, many brides are doing cocoa bars. The cocoa is served with all the toppings – our fresh whipped cream, chocolate shavings, marshmallows, cherries and sometimes Bailey’s Irish Cream for the adults. We also always recommend some type of flavored water. A popular one for fall is spring water infused with fresh oranges, mint and cranberry.

Brides in the Lowcountry typically choose foods popular here – shrimp and grits is always a big hit. Pulled pork and prime rib are always good choices. Another delicious option is a mashed potato bar with both sweet and white potatoes and all the toppings, and we do a great salad bar.

Once a bride chooses her food and does her tasting, that’s half the battle. If they’re working with a wedding planner, we will stay in contact with them through the event.

Wedding Dress 101

by Sally Herndon Choosing a wedding dress can and should be fun – the most important thing is to trust your feelings and get what you love! That said, brides should start looking for a dress from eight to twelve months from their wedding day. When you find your perfect dress it has to be ordered from the designer and standard shipping time is anywhere from six to 20 weeks. Alterations should start at least three months out. There is always a little wiggle room, but that’s the standard baseline.

If a bride comes to me at the last minute, we do have off the rack dresses.

And, if they see a dress they like, I can try to get it shipped right away, but that only happens if the designer has the dress in stock.

Being open minded to all dress styles is important. What you think you’ll like is not usually what you end up buying. Today, there are so many options online that look great on your computer, but are not what looks the best on your body. If you love a dress, trust that feeling – don’t try to find something wrong with a dress that makes you happy. Choose what looks good on you. Sometimes brides come in and are sure they want a mermaid dress, but end up with a big, beautiful ball gown. It’s all about what looks good on your body type.

Ivory and off white are the most popular colors. What many brides may not know is there are a lot of colors available – a layer of blush or other color, satin usually, can be set underneath the lace or tulle overlay. This gives the dress some contrast and the lace design stands out more – instead of the standard ivory on top of ivory. A lot of brides are nervous about using anything different so they go with ivory over ivory – again, I tell them, if you love it – go with it. Choosing a wedding dress is a hard decision these days – there’s a lot to pick from.

We have in-house alterations and can suggest out of house options, depending on what is most convenient for you. Always take the shoes you’ll be wearing or at least the height. And take any undergarments you’ll wear. A lot of dresses have so much structure you don’t need a lot of support, but some women like to wear a spanx or a corset. If your dress doesn’t have any structure or boning, you’re going to want to wear some type of shape wear. Remember the alteration is a process – it takes time and multiple visits to get it done perfectly.

Choosing a veil is very personal and is all about your preference. A lot of women like birdcages or finger length veils, but if you’ve always wanted a long, dramatic veil, that’s what you should choose.

Finally, while every woman is going to be thinking about their fiancée while walking down the aisle, it is YOUR special day. Be happy and comfortable with what you’re wearing and everyone else will be happy and comfortable too!

Why My Wedding Wasn’t on TV

Weddings need themes these days. I know because I’m addicted to a TV show where four brides compete with each other for a honeymoon. As guests at each other’s weddings, they score things like food, dress and venue. Then they are interviewed on camera and go into great detail at exactly where the other brides dropped the ball.

Sometimes they’re riled up about having to wait too long at the bar for the signature drink. Sometimes it’s the bride’s dress that sagged at the bottom or didn’t have enough bling. Bling is big.

I’m most obsessed with the theme part. It allows the bride contestants to walk into a reception area and moan “I don’t see enough of her winter wonderland theme.” Or, if the bride has been successful, one of them might say to the others, “You can really see how she carried off her peacock theme.”

When my boyfriend and I decided – over a bubbling casserole of mac and cheese on a Tuesday night in 1974 – that we would get married, there wasn’t much to it. He hadn’t bought a ring. Why would he when I could use my grandmother’s just-fine engagement ring she’d given me for my college graduation? And it almost fit, so there was that.

I called my parents, announcing the date we picked out, giving ourselves five months to plan everything. This would be unthinkable in today’s wedding world, where you have to book a florist two years in advance.

Plus I didn’t have a binder (or seven) that I lugged around with all my DIY ideas for place cards and cake toppers.

My mother ’s first question: “Are you sure you’re ready to get married?” It was a ridiculous question, because at 24 I was sure of everything, and I wondered how she could have missed that.

She sort of sighed at the end of our conversation and said, “Well, I guess you’ll have to come home soon so we can get the details arranged. We should be able to

get it done in a weekend.” She said this with the tone usually reserved for “The dog had diarrhea all over the living room carpet.”

On a suggestion from friends about where to have our reception, my mother got an appointment at a catering hall called The Riviera. It seemed decadent because it was in what we called, “the rich part of town.”

It could accommodate 125 people, and we had 120 on the guest list.

The catering director gave us three menus to look over. My parents had been saving for my wedding a long time, long enough that even though it wouldn’t be the truly white wedding of their dreams, a buffet would not do.

The Riviera people told us, “Everyone uses the Buddy Guy trio.” From the photographs, we could see that the trio appeared to be a sweet group of older Italian men who knew their way around the “Hokey Pokey.” My mother took out her checkbook. We were in business.

Next, we stopped by the florist and ordered a bouquet for me, corsages for the mothers, and flowers for my matron of honor. She was going to wear a multi-colored dress she’d worn for someone else’s wedding.

When he asked about shades and hues, I said, “Anything you think will look nice.” He didn’t drop his chin the way florists of today would at hearing this crazy talk. And among the roses were a few carnations, which would have dropped my overall score on TV. I just know one of the more critical bride contestants surely would say, “What? Carnations in a bridal bouquet?”

Our last stop was the photographer. We overlooked the yellowing pictures and plastic lilacs on the dirty ledge in his storefront window.

My mother knew someone who knew him. “I heard he’s nice,” was her complete report. He seemed happy for the business.

My mother and I conquered the complete planning of my wedding in six hours. It would be years later, looking at the photo album, that I’d notice a few details I might have put more thought into. And be glad camera crews and competing brides hadn’t followed me into the reception hall that day.

I stayed married for 22 years. So I’d like those brides of today – with their penguin-themed receptions or the ones who have to have everything covered in chevrons and twinkling lights – to give me the credit I rightfully deserve. Two decades count for something, even if my theme didn’t hit you in the eye. And, yes, there were a few carnations in the mix.

Loved and Lost

Six years have gone by since my mother-in-law left this earth. If you’re a long time Sasee reader you may remember her – she was featured in an August 2011 article entitled “Jean Benson – Beyond Hospice, a Modern Day Miracle,” written by Leslie Moore. If you’re new to Sasee I encourage you to read it, especially when you need a little pick me up or a whole lot of inspiration.

Mom (that’s what I called her) and I were very close, but the candid conversations and the love and admiration I had for her really shined during the last year of her life. I never tired of hearing her “stories,” tales of her youth, but my favorite stories were the ones about her and Dad (that’s what I call my father-in law). The dances at St. Brendan’s and her visits to the military base, their wedding album, their first apartment, disco dancing and New Year’s parties…over a half century of love and romance. I married their youngest son Jim, and the icing on the wedding cake was that I also got this amazing family that went along with him.

and: B. No one can fill Mom’s shoes, and I shouldn’t have been thinking anyone should even try. Linda had a perfectly good pair of her own shoes.

Over the next few months Dad fell in love with Linda and so did we. She was kind, funny, smart, and made my father-in-law very happy. Linda was a retired high school English literature teacher who had taken care of her parents at the end of their lives, she had no brothers or sisters, and she had never been married. Dad changed that last part by asking her to be his wife, and they had a beautiful wedding and reception this past November. The highlight (other than their vows, of course) was when Linda went around the table and introduced each of her new family members by name – sons, daughter, grandchildren, their spouses and fiancées, nephew and his spouse, and most exciting of all, a great grandbaby that would be born in December – the whole Benson clan!

at Dad sold the house a few years after Mom died. He moved closer to his children and grandchildren but still had his own life. One day he announced he was going on a date – just taking a nice woman that he had met to lunch.

He went on a few dates and although we tried to be encouraging and supportive I remember quite a few lines behind the scenes like “He’s not ready for this,” and “What is he thinking?” When he said they’d played golf a few times, had gone to Harold’s on Main Street to shag and that her name was Linda we knew it was time to meet this Linda.

My sister-in-law Janet had them over for dinner first…we thought we’d “divide and conquer” so we didn’t overwhelm Linda all at once. Janet reported back that Linda was lovely. She said it as if she were surprised, as if she didn’t want her to be so lovely. How lovely could Linda be? Not half as lovely as Mom, that’s for sure. A few nights later it was our turn to have Linda and Dad over and much to my dismay she was more than lovely. Our 16 year old daughter Liliana whispered “I really like her” as we said our goodbyes at the door after two hours of getting to know each other over chicken piccata and a nice bottle of wine.

That was the night I realized that: A. I was the one who wasn’t ready.

Dad and Linda packed their bags for a two week trip to Arizona, they went on a shag dance cruise, several mini golf excursions and had booked a two week European River cruise for September 2018…they were living life to the fullest, and we were so happy that they were so happy!

Linda was getting ready to celebrate her 70th birthday when she took a fall. After a trip to the ER she came back home with what seemed mostly scrapes and bruises. The next day she had so much back pain that Dad took her back to the hospital thinking they missed something. After two days of tests they got a diagnosis: Stage 4 Lung cancer.

When we got the news our hearts fell. We were speechless, numb. Linda had never smoked and by all accounts was in great health. What do you do when you get that kind of news? You take a page from Jean Benson’s playbook, make copies for everyone and relish every second spent together because it all comes down to time. There is just never enough time. It’s the one thing above all most of us would love more of: time.

As the clock ticked (we put it on silent mode but it was still there) we gathered together as often as possible…it didn’t have to be an occasion like a birthday or anniversary, but we had dinner and drinks

to commemorate any of baby Adalyn’s landmarks (even teething!), the last day of school, a vegetable sprouting up in the garden (however small!) and we were all looking forward to a wonderful occasion: a wedding!

The youngest grandson was getting married, and we were all going to be there with bells on!

Everyone, especially Linda (and the bride, of course!), looked radiant the weekend of the wedding. It was hot…really hot, but somehow everyone being together to celebrate the love of this beautiful young couple overshadowed the heat. Linda and Dad may very well have been the couple in the spotlight that day – their love shined.

We didn’t know it at the time but that would be our last big family gathering together with Linda. She had her second round of chemo the following week and was admitted to the hospital a few days later due to complications from a procedure. She was gone before we could even drive the hour to the hospital to say goodbye.

The days following were a blur, especially for Dad. He is an incredibly strong, stoic gentleman, but I wondered how can someone go through this, watching someone they love slip away…not once, but twice? I tried to be helpful by going to the first Sunday service with my sister-in-law and Dad. We thought he could use the support and company on this first day back but I’m not sure how much support I really was as tears streamed down my face during the last hymn. All I could hear was her voice in the choir, and as I looked over at Janet and Dad I knew they were hearing it too.

The day of Linda’s memorial service arrived – she had been a very active member at Seaside United Methodist Church in Sunset Beach, and we knew the day would be both emotional and inspirational. As friends gathered we heard a recurring theme: “Linda was the happiest she had ever been in her life.” To hear that over and over throughout the day warmed our hearts. The Pastor’s final thoughts were that it is rare, very rare to be the happiest you could possibly be at the time of your death, but Linda was in that rare place.

I am reminded of that beautiful quote by Tennyson, “‘Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” To have known and loved these amazing women is an honor and a blessing. To have lost them reminds us of how strong we are, that tears eventually dry and that our hearts are fulfilled.

Patricia & Don Atkinson: Jewelry with a Past Patricia and Don Atkinson love old things – and they also love attending estate sales and browsing in antique stores. Don, a retired computer programmer, and Patricia, a retired tour guide who has travelled all over the world, have always enjoyed creating something from nothing. “I think we see beauty where other people may not,” said Patricia. When they are not displaying their work at festivals and shows, this unique jewelry is found at Under the Sun South Market in Myrtle Beach.

“We’ve been making jewelry for about ten years,” Patricia began. “We first took old, broken jewelry and reworked it. But while we were searching for items to recreate, we saw a lot of gorgeous flatware and thought we could make something beautiful with these pieces.” This creative artist went on to tell me how she and Don became fascinated by the history of flatware. “We had one piece with a patent reaching back to 1835!”

Tarnished, discarded flatware isn’t beautiful when it first comes into Patricia’s hands. “It takes a lot of cleaning and polishing to get a piece ready to make jewelry.” The finished pieces are not only beautiful, but are very durable – this jewelry makes a statement and is a part of history.

“People will bring in silverware or flatware that belonged to their mother or grandmother,” Patricia told me as we chatted about her work. “The jewelry is a special way for them to remember their family member.”

One of her most special requests was from a mother who had lost her

baby years ago. “She brought me a baby spoon and we reworked it into a beautiful ring.”

Patricia and Don evaluate each piece of flatware to determine what type of jewelry will work best. “All pieces don’t make good rings, but we will make something beautiful – earrings, a necklace or a pendant.” Patricia also enjoys researching the patterns so her customers will know what they are wearing.

While this creative couple can be found at ten to twelve shows a year, The Dickens Christmas Show is one of their favorites. “There are so many talented artisans – this show is so much more than just a craft show. And we love dressing up! Everyone wears costumes that reflect the Dickens era.” They will return to this popular event this year for the fourth time in November.

Songs to Dream On

Like many mothers-to-be (in the late 70s), I was delighted and stressed over decorating the nursery in genderless shades of yellow and green, and animal or alphabet themes. The ultrasound test that could tell you the sex of your baby was still a thing of the future. The absence of this (now) routine technology is an unimaginable concept for my grown children who personalized their nurseries with pink and lilac, as well as, yellow, green and blue.

I thought I had all the essentials covered: the diapers, sleepers, t-shirts, lotions, powders, thermometer, humidifier, breast pump, a lamp with a boy and a girl in an air-balloon basket. Everything had been checked off the list. I read books. I listened to the doctor, my mother, my friends; I was ready, or so I thought. The oversight of a simple, every-night ritual took me by surprise.

I had no lullaby.

That first night at home cradling my newborn son in my arms, I could think of nothing special or meaningful to sing to him. “Rock-a-bye Baby,” “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” and “Old MacDonald had a Farm” were the only children’s songs that came to mind, and they would not do. I rocked my baby in a chair that had been chosen over three others, and yet, I hadn’t planned for such an important childhood tradition.

My mother couldn’t carry a tune. I had never heard her singing along with her favorite country songs, so I was pretty sure soft crooning in my ear hadn’t happened. My own repertoire was limited to Simon and Garfunkel, The Letterman, The Beach Boys and a smattering of Sonny and Cher, none of which were appropriate.

I tried to remember some old-time ditties.

Today, of course, I could bring up a slew of baby tunes on the Internet, but at that time, I had only my own limited, musically deprived data bank upon which to call.

There were the simple verses I learned in elementary school: Indian songs (chanting monotones boring enough to put anyone to sleep), folksy lyrics (“There’s a Hole in my Bucket”) and Christmas songs for the winter concerts, but no special nursery jingles.

The next day I checked with my mother. I was right: she was tone deaf and couldn’t remember singing any particular songs to me, or my siblings.

She listed some unoriginal tunes that I had already rejected. I didn’t call my friends. I was sure they would have suggestions, but the song had to have meaning to us. So, as my baby slept, I turned the radio on, spun the dial, and searched for something that would spark an emotional connection.

Perhaps, I thought, I was obsessing over something that would come with time. I didn’t need to feel guilty, but I did. “Rock-a-Bye Baby” was beginning to look like a top contender.

An hour later, fingers cramping, I came upon a station that played Irish songs. There was enough Irish blood running through our veins to make a claim. When I was young, my mother told me stories of her family who lived on the island. The tales were adventurous, scandalous, happy, sad and wonderfully interesting. Ireland became that magical island in the stars with bigger-than-life characters – members of our family. I guess you could say those stories told to me by my mother, whose mother told to her, were my lullabies without the melody.

As luck would have it, I recognized an old ballad. It brought back memories of the music teacher who had taught us songs from different countries all over the world. Even at that young age, I was drawn to the soulful Irish lyrics. As I listened to the radio station, it all came back. “A Little Bit of Heaven” and “Galway Bay,” (the only Irish songs I knew) played back to back. I’d made a connection to the melodic poems when I was a child, and all these years later, I still remembered the words. It was meant to be; we had our special songs! Every night my son and daughter fell asleep listening to the ballads, conjuring dreams of one of the strong, shiny threads in our heritage.

Many years later, after my daughter had a baby of her own, she asked me to help her recall the words of her old lullabies. She knew most of them.

It was simply a matter of singing them out loud again. A quick check on the computer (oh so easy!) showed my memorized versions were not so accurate, after all. It didn’t matter – the words stayed the same. Unique and indelible, the beautiful ballads belonged to us.

Finally, I settled on “El Condor Pasa (If I Could)” I’d rather be a

Nicole Says...Read These Books to Your Kids Reviews by Nicole McManus Happy Halloween! Growing up, I was always a fan of the cute and fun Halloween books. I never got into the gory stories. My favorite, of course, is the classic It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. In fact, still to this day, it isn’t officially Halloween until Charlie Brown makes an appearance. Below, I share another one of my childhood favorites with the Berenstain Bears family. There are several new, cute, children’s books, including Llama Llama Trick or Treat. (I think it is safe to say, the Llama Llama series will be known in the future as classic children’s books!) Below are two other relatively new books that I think will be fun for the entire family.

Mickey’s Halloween, A Spooky Fun Lift-the-Flap Book, by Disney (Board book, Toddler to Kindergarten) All of Mickey’s friends are ready for Halloween. This is an adorable board book. The sing-song rhythm and bright pictures will capture the young children’s attention. The scavenger hunt for objects and guessing who is who will entertain older readers, while adults will enjoy reminiscing with Mickey and his friends!

The pages are big enough for the whole family to gather around and have fun discovering what is under each of the 40+ flaps.

Sleepy Hollow Sleepover, by Ron Roy (A-Z Mysteries Super Edition #4) (2nd to 5th grade) Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose are staying in a spooky cabin in Sleepy Hollow. They are excited for the hayride through town to the bonfire. Mysterious things happen that night and it is up to the trio of friends to solve the crimes!

This is a fantastic series of mystery books. This story has several pictures that have a hidden message in them, so readers have a bonus puzzle to solve. Perfect for children who love to discover their inner detective skills.

The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat, by Stan and Jan Berenstain (Kindergarten to 2nd) Brother and Sister Bear are excited to go trick or treating by themselves. However, when the neighborhood bully joins them and wants to play tricks on the grouchy, older neighbor, Brother and Sister aren’t sure what to do. When Miz McGrizz catches them, will they all be in trouble, or will a sweet treat be in their future?

I remember reading numerous Berenstain Bears books, as a child. I loved them all! This story teaches children not to judge appearances. Fans of the series will enjoy seeing all the favorite characters, and this is the perfect book for young elementary students. This deluxe edition even includes stickers to count down to the holiday, stick on tattoos, and a memory card game for children to play.
