BE JOYFUL IN THE LORD, ALL YOU LANDS! By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral
Most people around my neighborhood know that I like to walk. And I have walked lots of places on this earth. I have walked in the woods. I have walked in the mountains. I have walked on beaches. I have walked in dense urban cities. And in all those places where I walk, I see things. I see the creative and clean things, and I see the dirty and slovenly things. I see kind people, and I see unkind people. They are all elements of my walking, and I try to observe the holiness in each of those sights. And I pray. Sometimes my prayer is simply the observation itself. For my soul, to see clearly is to pray. I try to see clearly. And sometimes I do recite the familiar prayers of my tradition. On seeing me out walking, one might not even know that I have prayers in my earphones, or that I am trying to recall some old prayer from memory. Lately, one of the prayers I have been using is the old version of the Jubilate Deo, good old Psalm 100, which is also a grand invitatory canticle in our office of Morning Prayer. Here is the old version, the Rite 1 version, which is my preference: Be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands; * serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song.
O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise; * be thankful unto him and speak good of his Name.
Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us and not we ourselves; * we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
For the Lord is gracious; his mercy is everlasting; * and his truth endureth from generation to generation. (Psalm 100, the Jubilate Deo)
Newer translations might be a touch more accurate, when they say, in verse two, “It is he that made us, and we are his.” But I prefer the old received text, “It is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves.” It is the “not we ourselves” clause that gets me. It just hangs out there, without a verb. Scholars may be right that it is missing something. But I like the line that way. When I pray, “not we ourselves,” I am admitting that I did not just happen by myself. We did not just suddenly, or even gradually, appear. We are here not by ourselves, but we are here in the fullness of God. Whatever I see during my walk, is what I speak to when I pray, “Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands.” It is the earth, the mountain, the woods, the beach, who is being joyful in the Lord. I am trying to see the joy of the Lord in all this creation. And, yes, I am praying myself to be joyful even in the uglier or unkind things I see. Most of the land, the earth, really does want to rejoice in the Lord! And, I believe most people really want to rejoice in the Lord, too. “For the Lord is gracious,” the psalm says in its last verse. And, here, I like the newer translation, “For the Lord is good.” The Lord is, indeed, good. This has been a morning psalm in Christian liturgy for centuries. It is good to start the day by being reminded that the Lord is good. Thus, this day can be good. This land around me can be good. These people around me can be good. The Lord is good, gracious, and his mercy endures forever.

SPIRITUALITY LENTEN QUIET DAY WITH THE REV. DR. ROBERT WILLIS, DEAN EMERITUS OF CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL February 24, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lanier House The Essential Quality of Silence in the Lives of Jesus and the Saints The use of quiet time in our modern world has become more and more vital. In so many ways the noise, busyness and concerns of the world force their way into every part of life by so many different means. It means that "quiet time" has to be programmed into our thinking and praying time. We shall be exploring this aspect of our lives with illustrations and quotations from saints throughout the ages but most importantly in the life of Jesus himself. Join us on this day and explore the gifts of space and silence. The Quiet Day will take place in the Lanier House on the Cathedral campus from 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, February 24. The cost is $20 and includes lunch. Learn more about the Rev. Dr. Robert Willis and register at cathedralATL.org/quietday. For questions, contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@cathedralATL.org, or 404-365-1031.
WOMEN’S LENTEN RETREAT: LIVING IN THE LIMINAL March 15-17, 2024 St. Mary’s Sewanee Liminal spaces describe times of transition—the threshold between what was and what will be. Our Women’s Lenten Retreat will explore the liminal spaces we inhabit (adding or losing a family member, starting or ending a career, moving to a new home or new town) and how Jesus meets us there. Whatever in-between space you find yourself in, come share it with the community, creativity, and quiet of the Women’s Lenten Retreat! All Cathedral women are invited to our annual Women’s Lenten Retreat at the beautiful St. Mary’s Sewanee retreat center in Tennessee. The retreat will be led by Canon Lauren Holder. The cost is $320 for a single occupancy and $260 for a double occupancy (price includes meals from dinner on Friday through breakfast on Sunday). Contact Canon Holder, 404-365-1036 or lholder@cathedralATL.org, or Jeannie Mahood , jmahood@cathedralATL.org or 404365-103, with questions. The registration deadline is February 20. The Myth of the American Dream: Reflections on Affluence, Autonomy, Safety, and Power by D. L. Mayfield Cathedral Bookstore Drawing on stories of her family’s life among refugees in Portland, evangelical Christian writer Mayfield invites readers to consider whether the core values of the American Dream are congruent with Jesus’ command to love our neighbors as ourselves. Says the author, “This is a book about paying attention. It’s about being fully alive . . . to the systems and structures and policies that dull our imaginations for a world that truly has hope and good news and beauty for everyone.”
The Nurtured Heart Approach with Mary Hunter Maxwell
Conference Room 239 The Nurtured Heart Approach is a relationship centered way of life that is built upon three stands: Absolutely No!, Absolutely Yes!, and Absolutely Clear! Join Mary Hunter Maxwell in an exploration of the Nurtured Heart Approach on Wednesday nights this Lent. Originally developed to support the parents and caregivers of the most challenging, intense children, NHA has blossomed into a powerful tool that empowers parents, teachers, grandparents, and other caregivers to recognize and celebrate greatness – or what we might call the image of God – in all children (and each other!). We will meet in Room 239 from 6-7 p.m. on February 21, February 28, March 13, and March 20. RSVP at cathedralATL.org/nurturedheart if you plan to attend – this will help ensure there are adequate materials and seating for everyone but last-minute additions are always welcome.
The Chosen Watch Party

The Cathedral’s popular and deeply inspiring video discussion will continue in the Gould Room at 5 p.m., with a meal break at 5:30 for attendees who register for a Lenten dinner in the parish hall (Child Hall) next door. For Lent we will continue to view and reflect on this awesome series of scripture-based stories about Jesus and his first disciples that’s energizing viewers worldwide. Independently you may also watch the entire series or individual episodes at watch.thechosen.tv, download The Chosen app, or search the internet for many reviews and interviews that highlight one of the greatest breakthroughs in Christian media this century. ADULT Education ADULT EDUCATION THIS SUNDAY Old Fashioned Sunday School The Screwtape Letters: A Lenten Look at Life through the Eyes of C.S. Lewis 10:10 a.m., Child Hall Part of life is being tested. The Lenten season marks the time that Jesus was tested by the devil in the wilderness. C. S. Lewis offers a satirical, but playful and perceptive take on the idea of such testing in The Screwtape Letters. In the letters, the senior devil, Screwtape, advises his nephew and devil-in-training, about how to best sabotage a human being’s attempts to live a faithful, fruitful, beautiful life. Lewis makes us laugh and then makes us cry as we realize how often we get in our own way. We will start preparing for Easter a little early this year and then (with one interruption) proceed through Lent by talking about some of the themes running through the letters. Canon Maxwell will continue working from a Lenten devotional titled C. S. Lewis And The Delightful, Diabolical Daring Of Lent: A Lenten Companion To “The Screwtape Letters.” A downloadable PDF is provided in the weekly Old Fashioned Sunday School newsletter and at cathedralATL.org/OFSS.

Living Faith 10:10 a.m., Room 239 Our topic until Lent is “What makes for a meaningful life?” Drawing on the book Life Worth Living: A Guide to What Matters by three scholars from the Yale Institute for Faith and Culture, we’ll reflect on some core questions of human existence within the context of our Christian calling and hope. All are welcome! Young Professionals Say it to God: In Search of Prayer (The Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent Book 2018) by Luigi Gioia 10:10 a.m., Room 368 In Say it to God, Luigi Gioia provides a welcome encouragement to all those who feel the need to freshen their practice of prayer. For Gioia, prayer is not about methods or techniques, but trusting that God is truly interested in everything that happens to us and wants to hear about it. This book leads the reader into the theological aspects of prayer and how it relates to Christ, to the Holy Spirit and to the Church. Enjoy Biblical Greek! 1:15 p.m., Room 239 and on Zoom Provided on a drop-in basis, first-time visitors need no previous knowledge of Greek. Please contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith, tsmith@cathedralATL.org, for more information.
