YOUTH SUNDAY SERMONS!

Last Sunday, May 8, the Cathedral celebrated Youth Sunday, including four excellent senior preachers! Here are excerpts from each of them; read or watch the full sermons at cathedralATL.org/sermons. From Sadler Stukes: Around this time last year, my track team was preparing for the region meet. This meet determines if you go to state, so it is a really big deal. I was a part of the 4 by 100 relay team and we decided to purchase a custom baton for regionals. …We ended up ordering a black baton with the Louis Vuitton logo scattered on it. Naturally, we named it “Louis Baton.” On the bottom, there was a Latin phrase and a Bible verse. For the Bible verse, we tried to think about the coolest one. We wanted something intimidating yet inspirational. After some debate, we ended up writing “Psalm 23 verse 4” on the baton. … The psalm opens up by saying, “The Lord is my shepherd.” We have all heard this countless times, but what does it mean to me and others? I feel as though we see part of the Lord in all of the people we know. The Lord has put people in our lives to guide us to the green pastures that the psalm mentions in the next verse. From MP Perkins: I stayed away from church events for a bit and made myself as busy as possible so that I didn’t have to think about the questions and doubts that I had about God. An existential crisis is really not what I wanted to have during my busiest year of high school. I know a lot of my friends can remember me saying things like “I don’t know if I believe in God” or “maybe I’m agnostic, who knows.” …Today I would say that my faith is stronger than it ever has been, because God really stuck with me even when I wasn’t seeing him. I still have a lot to learn and am only at the beginning of my journey, but I know that it’s okay to ask questions and have doubts. As I was writing this and reflecting on my time here at the Cathedral, one thing that was very clear to me was that growing your faith and relationship with God takes a lifetime, and going through the highs and lows is just a part of it. From Rebie Benedict: My faith journey has had a lot of ups and downs. Before March 2020, I was involved in every possible church event I could. …Once COVID hit, it was all gone. We still had diocese Zoom calls, and I helped lead worship and plan online events, but it wasn't the same. I didn’t realize how much of my life and my happiness came from the church community until I lost it. My faith was rock solid but it slowly dissolved as I was isolated alone during quarantine. I’ve learned that my faith and my trust in God doesn’t come from reading scripture or reciting prayers, but the environment and the community and being surrounded by people who love you and love God. My faith was so much more than just coming and coloring during the 8:45 service. It is the atmosphere here at church; that is what I missed the most. It was the people here I know I can always trust. Special shoutout to all of the people who I've grown up with in the church, and explored our faiths together. From Carter Sessions: There is a common thread in all of these memories though. My sister, Ramsay, Maggie, Meg, Clayton, MP, Rebie, Blake, Lily, Jackson, and Keith. People. My faith has waxed and waned over the years, but I never take for granted the fact that this community has raised me and given me piles of love, heaps of joy, and a deep connection with those around me. This community has given me my closest friends and mentors. This community has given me a shoulder to cry on, and steady legs to depend on when I need to take a break. This is how I’ve experienced religion. I have continued to engage in the church not because it helps me always understand my faith, but because I experience such an immeasurable amount of love from everyone I come in contact with here. You can call it experiencing God’s love if you’d like or you could simply call it having a strong sense of community. I don’t know If I could come up with an adequate description for the feeling. Whatever it is though, I am grateful for it because it has given me a home.

Adult EDUCATION SECULOSITY REPRISE

MAY 15, CHILD HALL 10:10 A.M. Join Canons Zappa and Holder for a conversation about all the things that distract us from our faith—including church! We will revisit the David Zahl’s book Seculosity: How Career, Parenting, Technology, Food, Politics, and Romance Became Our New Religion and What to Do about It. David is the guest speaker for our Parish Retreat at Kanuga! He’ll be breaking bread with us all weekend. So come join the conversation and explore with us the importance and (sometimes) difficulty of maintaining a meaningful faith life at every age and stage.

HOW DO I KNOW IF SOMEONE MAY BE AT RISK OF SUICIDE, AND HOW CAN I HELP THEM? The church is a place where we talk about hard things, like suicide, because we care about those who are hurting. Because many of us are hurting. On Sunday, May 22, during the Sunday school hour, Cathedral member, professional counselor, and suicide researcher, Dr. Mary Chase Mize (PhD, LPC, NCC), will lead a discussion about how to identify and respond to someone who may be having thoughts of suicide. In particular, we will learn why suicidal thoughts develop, how to recognize if someone may be at risk, and how to get connected to safety and resources. This class is for adults and youth. Please join us for this important topic.

OUTREACH HABITAT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! We will build another Habitat home this summer with volunteers from the Cathedral and several other church partners. No prior skills or tools are required as we will teach you how to do the tasks and provide the tools and supervision. This is a wonderful program and fun experience that makes a lasting impact. If interested, visit stphilip.atlantahabitat.volunteerhub.com. Create your account and follow the prompts. It is very quick to sign up for the days you want to participate. Our first day is June 18 and we will build on seven Saturdays over nine weeks. Please register to build at least a week in advance. There is a limit for how many we can sign up each week due to current limits on the number of workers that can be on site. If all the slots are taken when you register, you can sign up and go on the waitlist. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. Ages 16 and 17 must print their Release and Waiver and bring it to the build with a parent or guardian signature. You can alternatively volunteer to assist with lunch preparation which the Cathedral will provide on June 18. To do that, or with any questions, contact John Champion at johntcham@gmail.com or 404-307-0817.

PLEASE DONATE SUPPLIES BY MAY 15 The Cathedral is coordinating with Cisco and Living Waters Christian Church in Buford to airlift needed medical supplies directly to aid centers in Ukraine. The Cathedral will have collection bins in the Atrium to collect the supplies. Please donate only new and unopened items. Requested items include over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol and Advil, sterile bandages, antibiotic ointment, and other items easily found at your local drug store. Dent removed his shoes and entered the circuitous lanes. With each step, his concentration grew. “The labyrinth is a metaphor for life,” he says. “If you keep the faith and stay on the path, it will take you to the center.” Minutes later, Dent made it to the heart of the labyrinth. “The stress of the day melted away, and I felt my soul,” he says. “It was peaceful but exhilarating.”... Cathedral GROUNDS REMOVAL OF CHERRY TREE IN MEMORIAL GARDEN After decades of providing spring blossoms, summer shade, and steady strength to the Memorial Garden, the beloved Yoshino Cherry Tree will be removed in the near future. While fertilizing and selective pruning have improved the health of the tree in the past few years, it remains in significant decline. Our long-time arborists will take special care in removing the tree and much of the trunk and branches will be preserved for future service to the Cathedral. Great care will also be taken with the stump and surrounding plots. The arborist will bring the trunk as low to the ground as possible and then allow the stump to decompose over time and eventually use that area for additional plots. Thanks to the generosity of a Cathedral family, several new trees and shrubs will be planted on the periphery of the Memorial Garden to continue to enhance this sacred space. Please contact David Rocchio at 404-365-1033 or drocchio@cathedralATL.org with questions or concerns.
