ALLELUIA IS ALWAYS FOLLOWED BY GRATITUDE! By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral Alleluia! Christ is Risen! The Lord is Risen! Alleluia! And with our “Alleluia,” always comes “Thanks!” A true “Alleluia” is followed by “Gratitude.” True and generous and overwhelming thanks follow our Alleluias. Thank you! Thank you, thank you, thank you, for your presence and love during Holy Week of 2022, and Easter Day of 2022. The Cathedral Parish of St. Philip – with friends, associates, and visitors – turned out by the hundreds for the Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday. And we returned to our glorious practice of parading around the Peachtree Point in witness to the presence of Jesus in our hearts and into our city. Thank you! Then: Thank you, to all of you who walked with us through Maundy Thursday, and the washing of feet and remembrance of the institution of the Lord’s Supper. Thank you, for your presence and prayer on Good Friday, when we heard again the Passion of our Lord, and when we prayed in somber silence. Thank you for your generous time on Holy Saturday, the Saturday before Easter when the campus is drenched with love and devoted preparation. All these services were true services. They involved people serving – and giving, and volunteering, and hosting, and washing, and cleaning, and preparing, and arranging, and truly working – working to give witness to Jesus Christ our Lord. In the Church, a service is where people serve! Even if you were not here physically, you were serving! Then: Then, the Alleluia arrived. The Alleluia arrived early on Easter morning, when workers arrived at the Cathedral as early as 3:30 a.m. We were all preparing for The Great Vigil. It arrived! No rain! The Great Fire of the Vigil towered over us and over Peachtree Road at 6:00 in the morning. The Lord is gloriously risen! Dogwood blossoms splashed us with baptismal water of renewal. The Alleluias continued all morning; over two thousand people were singing together. Even if you were not here physically, we felt your spirit and your support, your hope and your Alleluia. We heard your Alleluia wherever you were, and wherever you were praying and worshipping. Thank you! Thank you for persevering in hope. Thank you for not succumbing to skepticism and cynicism. Thank you for ignoring the nagging voices of pessimism and despair. Yes, despair and death are all around us; that is obvious. Your Alleluia, however, defeats death and despair. Death and despair are the old life. Easter people are not the voices of the old. We are the voices of the new. We are the voices of Alleluia and Gratitude. Thank you for your songs of joy!

Adult EDUCATION

LAST CLASS OF THE YEAR 10:10 — 11:00 A.M., CHILD HALL AND ONLINE

SECULOSITY REPRISE MAY 1, 8, 15, 22, CHAPTER ROOM 10:10 A.M. Join Canons Zappa and Holder for a conversation about all the things that distract us from our faith—including church! We will revisit the David Zahl’s book Seculosity: How Career, Parenting, Technology, Food, Politics, and Romance Became Our New Religion and What to Do about It. David is the guest speaker for our Parish Retreat at Kanuga! He’ll be breaking bread with us all weekend. So come join the conversation and explore with us the importance and (sometimes) difficulty of maintaining a meaningful faith life at every age and stage. And remember to register for Kanuga by May 5!

The twentieth century Jesuit scientist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin believed that our salvation lies in becoming one with the universe. He saw divine incarnational energy at the heart of evolution and the birthing of Christ (which he called Christogenesis) as the emerging personal union of God, human, and cosmos. Teilhard’s thought offers a fascinating reunion of science and religion, which has profound implications for how we see ourselves and the purpose and meaning of our lives. Ilia Delio is our guide. Canon Maxwell is using her book “Making All Things New: Catholicity, Cosmology, Consciousness” (Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books, 2015) as the basis for our class discussions and Sister Delio is also scheduled to be at the Cathedral in person on Saturday, April 23, 2022, to deliver a talk she has titled “Christifying the Universe.” Delio’s book and tickets to her talk are available in the Cathedral Book Store.

UTO Ingathering

Children's MINISTRY

UNITED THANK OFFERING: GRATITUDE FOR ALL AGES This spring, we invite our community – young and old – to again consider giving with gratitude to support our United Thank Offering. While many of us grew up putting coins in a UTO Box, children of God of all ages are invited to give to UTO. In the spirit of Matthew 25:35-36, this spring our coins (or “grown-up” giving) will come together with our worldwide Episcopal Community to support grants for innovative mission & ministry projects addressing the worldwide incarceration crisis. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Matthew 25:35-36 We invite you into a season of gratitude now, to thank God for all the good things he has given us. Then, we invite you to consider supporting UTO on Sunday, May 8, or prior with your thank offering at cathedralATL.org/uto.
