A CEMETERY SOLOIST SINGS AMAZING GRACE By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral Some of you know that I enjoy poetry, and that I even write poetry. Sometimes, it is good to share my poems! Here is one. – Sam Candler I watch so many old singers now, Their dear bodies grown erratically Into dripping faces and spotted skin, Swollen hips or round bellies, And their thin legs Like twisted trees, Gnarled and snapping, As they make their way along these hills. We are at the cemetery, And their feet have been forced Into shoes and heels, flats and sharps, Not meant for soft soil. They don’t very often step away from sturdy marble floors And easy carpets, or asphalt driveways, concrete walkways; But they do today, On this morning for the funeral of a dear friend. No one knows exactly where the grave is, But they see the green undertaker’s tent Set up above them, So they mount the rise, Cautiously stepping into odd pits And sunken slips in the grass, Around various slabs of bronze resting in strange sets Of random lines and letters of names they once knew. No one knows exactly where the grave is, Except somewhere below them, And everywhere around them, Among these old slopes and hazards, Notes rising and falling And modulating along the ground. I sing the last verse a tone higher. Gracefully, everyone is amazed that no one falls Today. Our time is not yet come.

Adult EDUCATION YOU'RE INVITED! SUNDAYS 10:10 — 11:00 A.M., CHILD HALL AND ONLINE The twentieth century Jesuit scientist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin believed that our salvation lies in becoming one with the universe. He saw divine incarnational energy at the heart of evolution and the birthing of Christ (which he called Christogenesis) as the emerging personal union of God, human, and cosmos. Teilhard’s thought offers a fascinating reunion of science and religion, which has profound implications for how we see ourselves and the purpose and meaning of our lives. Ilia Delio is our guide. Canon Maxwell is using her book “Making All Things New: Catholicity, Cosmology, Consciousness” (Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books, 2015) as the basis for our class discussions and Sister Delio is also scheduled to be at the Cathedral in person on Saturday, April 23, 2022, to deliver a talk she has titled “Christifying the Universe.” Delio’s book and tickets to her talk are available in the Cathedral Book Store.

Responding to God:
A Cathedral Conversation About Prayer Wednesday evenings during Lent March 30 and April 6 5:30 – 8:00 p.m., Child Hall Program begins at 6:30 p.m.
Have you found yourself wondering more about prayer lately? Some of us are experiencing a new desire to pray and asking questions about how to go about it. Others are feeling a surprising resistance to prayer and growing mistrustful of the benefits so often attributed to it. This is how grace works. It uses both our attraction and mistrust to draw us into a deeper intimacy with God. And, if we have learned one thing at the Cathedral, it’s that responding to these invitations is a lot more fun when we do it together! So, join us at the Cathedral on Wednesday nights during Lent for a light dinner and a lively conversation about prayer. Each week, we will explore a different aspect of prayer and take some time to share our collective experiences with each other. Childcare will be provided. Dinner is $8 per person and will be provided by Souper Jenny. So we can plan, please email Lisa McNamara, lmcnamara@ cathedralATL.org, and let her know how many in your family are coming for dinner, and to which Wednesdays. We look forward to seeing you there!
