THIS SUNDAY THE CATHEDRAL OBSERVES THE FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION! by the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral The feast day has gone by many different names, but the Christian Church has long observed the

holy character of February 2, roughly forty days after Christmas. Tradition says that the holy family of Jesus presented the child to the Temple, for the first time, forty days after his birth (around 40 days after December 25). According to the Gospel of Luke, there were prophets in the temple waiting for the child. Old Simeon broke out in song, “Lord now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, for these eyes of mine have seen the savior!” Old Anna, a widow, joined him in praise. Since then, many traditions have grown. Candles have come to be used in Christian churches for this event, especially in the western world when winter is at its deepest this time of year. So, the popular name, Candlemas, has also been given to this feast. It is a glorious feast, coming as it does in the middle of winter, but also as we wonder at the growth of the savior. The Lucan passage describing the event says that, “The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him” (Luke 2:40). At the Feast of the Presentation, we marvel at the growth of all children! So, join us this Sunday at the Cathedral of St. Philip, when we will observe this feast! From 7:45 to 8:45 to 11:15 to 4:00, the Cathedral will be observing the Feast of the Presentation. We hope that many of us are ready now to present ourselves to God in the “temple,” the glorious Cathedral. We will present ourselves, we will present our children, and we will present love and hope during this sensitive and cautious time. We will light candles, too! We will be welcoming light in the world, and we will be presenting ourselves in the temple of God! Saint Paul, too, talked about presentation; he said, “I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship” (Romans 12:1). (Of course, our worship will be online, too; in fact, we have been livestreaming our services for over five years now, way before the pandemic started. Our online community is part of our Cathedral community. Thank you for joining us!)

OLD FASHIONED SUNDAY SCHOOL: EPIPHANY SERIES SUNDAYS 10:10 — 11:00 A.M., CHILD HALL AND ONLINE The twentieth century Jesuit scientist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin believed that our salvation lies in becoming one with the universe. He saw divine incarnational energy at the heart of evolution and the birthing of Christ (which he called Christogenesis) as the emerging personal union of God, human, and cosmos. Teilhard’s thought offers a fascinating reunion of science and religion, which has profound implications for how we see ourselves and the purpose and meaning of our lives. Ilia Delio is our guide. Canon Maxwell is using her book “Making All Things New: Catholicity, Cosmology, Consciousness” (Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books, 2015) as the basis for our class discussions and Sister Delio is also scheduled to be at the Cathedral in person on Saturday, April 23, 2022, to deliver a talk she has titled “Christifying the Universe.” Delio’s book and tickets to her talk are available in the Cathedral Book Store.

Cathedral THRIFT HOUSE

ALLEGRO

GRATITUDE FOR THE CATHEDRAL THRIFT HOUSE The Cathedral has operated the non-profit Cathedral Thrift House to serve the community since 1949. Staff and volunteers manage the shop, and take pride in maintaining a clean and well-appointed store. Customers are welcomed with Christian hospitality and have fun while shopping for necessities and affordable luxuries. In 2021, the Thrift House contributed $28,910 to the Cathedral's outreach efforts, providing needed funds for our community partners, half of which will fund the Habitat for Humanity 2022 house build.

MUSIC FOR YOUNG CHILDREN The Music Department and Children’s Ministries jointly sponsor Allegro: Music for Young Children, for children through age 8, using the Musikgarten curriculum. We also offer the Allegro Choir for kindergarten, first, and second grades. Using play, movement, singing, and instruments, Allegro and Musikgarten classes help younger children develop musical skills and knowledge as well as an appreciation for music. Children and their parents find this to be a wonderful introduction to the music program at the Cathedral.

Want to support the Thrift House? You can donate items in good condition and shop for amazing treasures for the home, including art, rugs, lamps, china, glassware, decorative accessories, and furniture. The Thrift House sells affordable luxuries: oneof-a-kind, vintage, and even antique items. Well-stocked racks of better quality ladies' and men's clothing offer high fashion at moderate prices. Readers and music lovers will enjoy the large selection of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs, and vinyl records.

Classes are held in the Allegro room, downstairs next to the choir room, and are taught by Sarah Cauthen. Participants need not be members of the Cathedral. Register at cathedralATL.org/allegro. Contact Sarah Cauthen, scauthen@cathedralATL.org, for more information.
