CHORAL EUCHARIST FOR ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED THIS SUNDAY On All Saints’ Sunday, November 7 at 4:00 p.m., the Cathedral will offer a Choral Requiem Eucharist in remembrance of members and friends of the Cathedral who have died during the past year. The image-rich and comforting texts of the Requiem mass – the ancient Christian burial service – will be prayed this year using the music of the Requiem in A Major by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704), sung by the full Cathedral Choir with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. This setting of the Requiem, accompanied by baroqueera stringed instruments, trumpets, trombones, timpani, and continuo organ is truly extraordinary for its grandeur, pervasive sense of hopefulness, and vision of an after-life of endless peace and joy in the nearer presence of God. We believe that this may be only the second time this rarely heard music has ever been experienced in the United States within its intended context of worship. Whether you attend to mourn, to accompany those who are mourning, or simply to contemplate the mystery of heaven, we hope you will be comforted, inspired, and strengthened by it. SPIRITUALITY THE LORD IS NEAR – ADVENT QUIET DAY DECEMBER 4, 9:30 A.M. – 2 P.M. Led by Kristen E. Vincent Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. - Philippians 4:5 God is closer – much closer – than we think. In fact, God is right here with us. God is with us in the mundane moments of shaving or making toast, just as God is with us in the most extraordinary moments.

God is near. And that should mean something.

If we are carefully reading the words of the apostle Paul in Philippians 4:4-7, we’ll see that the Lord’s nearness naturally leads to rejoicing, gentleness, prayer, and a sense of peace.

This Advent, join us for an Advent Quiet Day where we will focus on what it means that the Lord is near.

We’ll journey with people who encountered God’s nearness – Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, Anna, and Simeon – to understand what difference such encounters made in their lives. The day will include brief moments for learning and sharing, but most of the time will be reserved for silence and reflection using creative prompts, prayer stations, and the labyrinth, and closing with Eucharist. We’ll explore signs of God’s presence in our own lives, and prepare to receive the gift of Emmanuel – God with us.

Kristen E. Vincent is an award-winning author, spiritual director, retreat leader, and artisan whose passion is spiritual formation, including the use of prayer beads. She has written several books, including A Bead and a Prayer: A Beginner’s Guide to Protestant Prayer Beads, and Beads of Healing: Prayer, Trauma, and Spiritual Wholeness.

Kristen has a Master of Theological Studies from Duke Divinity School and is a graduate of the two-year Academy for Spiritual Formation. She is in the process of becoming a certified Enneagram practitioner through The Narrative Enneagram. She lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with her husband, Max, a United Methodist pastor, and their son, Matthew.

The Quiet Day will take place in the Lanier House on the Cathedral Campus, 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. on December 4. The cost is $20 and lunch is included.

Cathedral STAFF THANK YOU, ST. EMILY! From the Rev. Canon George M. Maxwell, Jr., Vicar of the Cathedral Emily Bazzel, our Assistant to the Finance Director, has retired from the Cathedral after more than eleven years of service to the parish. She started working with children and youth ministries and finished in the finance department. I know these two positions seem like such different callings, but she functioned in both areas with equal grace, excellence, and hospitality.

And she made an exquisite salad!

I remember walking into our break room one day just in time to witness Emily sitting down to the most perfectly presented salad I had ever seen. I do not remember how she did what she did. I just remember the large white plate supporting a colorful and symmetrically arranged mix of greens, fruits, and vegetables worthy of a professional salad chef. I was sure that salad was calling my name!

Over time, I realized that every lunch Emily made warranted a culinary award.

It was as if Emily believed that there was not any use doing something unless you found a way to make it healthy and beautiful.

She expressed the same aesthetics in caring for all of us. Charles Jacobs was the one who started calling her St. Emily, but we all knew what he meant. Emily did not spend her time promoting Emily; she spent her time giving life to all of us. She was a true friend. I’m confident that we are going to be standing around in the coming weeks wondering why something wasn’t turned on, or cleaned up, or put back where it is supposed to be before realizing, “Oh! I’ll bet Emily was the one who took care of that.”

Thank you, St. Emily!

Your heart caused ours to grow and we will forever be grateful for all that you have taught us, even after we get the first postcards of you in sunglasses relaxing on the beach.

Melana Dixon is our new Assistant to the Finance Director. Melana previously served as the Program Coordinator for Membership and Stewardship, but we persuaded her to move to the finance office where we will benefit from her extensive accounting background. Her new phone number is 404-365-1074.

Meanwhile, Liz Aull is our new Program Coordinator for Membership and Stewardship. Many of you know Liz from her time on the Chapter and her work in our nurturing center. We are thrilled that she will bring her deep and longstanding relationships with the parish to our membership and stewardship ministries.

United Thank OFFERING UTO: GRATITUDE OPENS OUR HEARTS TO GOD’S GIFTS This fall, we come together again with our global Episcopal Community to embrace a daily spiritual discipline of gratitude ahead of our United Thank Offering (UTO) on Sunday, November 14.

UTO encourages people to notice the good things that happen each day, give thanks to God for those blessings and make a UTO offering in return.

This Week’s Gratitude Verse: Psalm 145:18 When the peace of Christ rules in our hearts, thankfulness overflows.

Even in the darkest of times, we can praise God for his love, his sovereignty, and his promise to be near us when we call.

We hope you’ll jot down a few words of gratitude each week, then on UTO Sunday, November 14, reflect on those blessings, and make a thank offering at cathedralATL.org/uto. 100% of UTO proceeds will support grants for Care of Creation.

VOLUNTEER THE GIFT OF RESPITE Respite Care Atlanta (RCA), an interfaith respite program that provides joy-filled care to those suffering from dementia, needs volunteers in order to grow and serve more folks. As one of the nine supporting churches, the Cathedral is a natural source of caring volunteers – and we ask that you consider joining in this ministry.

Housed at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church across Peachtree, RCA currently serves “members” of Club RCA on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. With a very small, expert, professional staff at the helm, volunteers carry the program in varying shifts and roles, including greeters, administrative helpers, lunch servers, a farewell group, program leaders and the most coveted job, companions to our members.

Congregational LIFE SUICIDE INTERVENTION TRAINING DECEMBER 10 – 11, 8 A.M. – 5 P.M. Whether at work, at home, with friends or teammates, or in more formal helping roles, many of us have been, or will be, called upon to respond to someone who is experiencing a mental-health crisis or considering suicide. The Cathedral is hosting a two-day workshop in one of the world’s leading suicide-intervention models, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). ASIST teaches individuals to provide a skilled intervention to a person who may be having thoughts of suicide and develop a collaborative safety plan to keep them safe and alive. The cost is $125, and continuing education credits are available. Please register at cathedralATL.org/ASIST. Once you register, you will receive an email for a link to pay for the workshop.

EXPLORING GRIEF AND LOSS IN ROOM 239 VISIT CATHEDRALATL.ORG/PASTORALCARE TO JOIN VIA ZOOM. Grief is our natural response to loss; and many of us have experienced loss recently, from the death of a loved one to the loss of a relationship, job, health, way of life, or sense of identity or purpose. There is no timeline to grief ! In fact, misconceptions and anxieties around grief, loss, and death can become barriers to tending to grief, whether the grief is our own or someone else’s. In this class, we will explore together the landscapes of grief and loss, with the aim of better understanding and caring for those (ourselves and others) who are experiencing grief.

Pastoral CARE WHAT IS AN EV AND WHY MIGHT I REQUEST ONE? Eucharistic Visitors (known informally as EVs) are parishioners who take the consecrated sacrament from our Sunday morning Eucharists to individuals who cannot currently attend services in person. These commissioned lay ministers carry with them not only the Bread of Life, but also the prayers of the community and our bonds that transcend space and time.

Why might someone request a visit from an EV? Certainly some recipients of this ministry have been homebound for a long period. It may have been months or years since they have been able to come to the cathedral.

Others, though, might appreciate a visit from an EV because: •

They have a newborn or infant in their household and are sticking close to home for a while.

•

They are staying in more during the pandemic because they, or others in their home, are immunocompromised and need to avoid large gatherings.

•

They have limited mobility for a while due to surgery, injury, or recent illness.

A visit can be something a person receives only once, many times, or “for a season.” Having a visit is actually a gift to our EVs and, indeed, to our whole parish, as it allows individuals to exercise the ministry to which they have been called and also strengthens our eucharistic fellowship.

Children's MINISTRY ONLINE CHRISTMAS PAGEANT REGISTRATION OPEN This year's Christmas Pageant, a beloved Cathedral tradition, will once again take place online. All parts will be prerecorded.

Children ages 4 - 5th grade are invited to participate.

Recording will take place in one-hour time slots on the Cathedral campus on Saturday, December 4. Narrators will record during the EYSeedling meetup on Sunday, December 12 at 4 p.m. Participants must be available to record on these dates. The pageant will be broadcast on the Cathedral website and Facebook page at 4 p.m. on December 24.
