cathedralATL.org/homelessrequiem Please join us at The Park at St. Luke's Episcopal Church for a holy evening of remembrance and recognition at our 33rd Annual Homeless Requiem on Monday, November 1, 2021 at 5:30 p.m.

After discussions with our partners and service providers, this year's Homeless Requiem is being graciously hosted outdoors at The Park at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. This worship service remembers the men and women who have died without housing in Atlanta in the past year. The Rev. Devadas Lynton of Church of the Common Ground will preach. The Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral, will officiate.

The Cathedral will also be collecting hats, scarves, and gloves this Sunday, October 31, before and after services to distribute at the Requiem.

Choral Eucharist

for All Faithful Departed At this service we will remember by name those members, family, and friends who have died in the past year.

Sunday, November 7, 2021 4 p.m.

On All Saints’ Sunday, November 7 at 4:00 p.m., the Cathedral will offer a Choral Requiem Eucharist in remembrance of members and friends of the Cathedral who have died during the past year. The image-rich and comforting texts of the Requiem mass – the ancient Christian burial service – will be prayed this year using the music of the Requiem in A Major by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704), sung by the full Cathedral Choir with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. This setting of the Requiem, accompanied by baroque-era stringed instruments, trumpets, trombones, timpani, and continuo organ is truly extraordinary for its grandeur, pervasive sense of hopefulness, and vision of an after-life of endless peace and joy in the nearer presence of God. We believe that this may be only the second time this rarely heard music has ever been experienced in the United States within its intended context of worship. Whether you attend to mourn, to accompany those who are mourning, or simply to contemplate the mystery of heaven, we hope you will be comforted, inspired, and strengthened by it. Slowly emerging from the Thirty Years War, courts and churches throughout the Holy Roman Empire sought to rebuild their musical establishments, attracting prized musicians who created some of the most fantastical and rapturous music ever heard for this signature combination of strings and brass. UTO: REFLECTING WITH GRATITUDE ON GOD’S GIFTS This fall, we come together again with our global Episcopal Community to embrace a daily spiritual discipline of gratitude ahead of our United Thank Offering (UTO) on Sunday, November 14. UTO encourages people to notice the good things that happen each day, give thanks to God for those blessings and make a UTO offering in return.

This Week’s Gratitude Verse: Psalms 103:2-5 Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

We hope you’ll jot down a few words of gratitude each week, then on UTO Sunday, November 14, reflect on those blessing, and make a thank offering at cathedralATL.org/uto. 100% of UTO proceeds will support grants for Care of Creation.

Respite Care Atlanta (RCA), an interfaith respite program that provides joy-filled care to those suffering from dementia, needs volunteers in order to grow and serve more folks. As one of the nine supporting churches, the Cathedral is a natural source of caring volunteers – and we ask that you consider joining in this ministry.

Housed at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church across Peachtree, RCA currently serves “members” of Club RCA on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. With a very small, expert, professional staff at the helm, volunteers carry the program in varying shifts and roles, including greeters, administrative helpers, lunch servers, a farewell group, program leaders and the most coveted job, companions to our members.

Congregational LIFE SUICIDE INTERVENTION TRAINING DECEMBER 10 – 11, 8 A.M. – 5 P.M. Whether at work, at home, with friends or teammates, or in more formal helping roles, many of us have been, or will be, called upon to respond to someone who is experiencing a mental-health crisis or considering suicide. The Cathedral is hosting a two-day workshop in one of the world’s leading suicide-intervention models, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). ASIST teaches individuals to provide a skilled intervention to a person who may be having thoughts of suicide and develop a collaborative safety plan to keep them safe and alive. The cost is $125, and continuing education credits are available. Please register at cathedralATL.org/ASIST. Once you register, you will receive an email for a link to pay for the workshop.

EXPLORING GRIEF AND LOSS Grief is our natural response to loss; and many of us have experienced loss recently, from the death of a loved one to the loss of a relationship, job, health, way of life, or sense of identity or purpose. There is no timeline to grief ! In fact, misconceptions and anxieties around grief, loss, and death can become barriers to tending to grief, whether the grief is our own or someone else’s. In this class, we will explore together the landscapes of grief and loss, with the aim of better understanding and caring for those (ourselves and others) who are experiencing grief.

Pastoral CARE WHAT IS AN EV AND WHY MIGHT I REQUEST ONE? Eucharistic Visitors (known informally as EVs) are parishioners who take the consecrated sacrament from our Sunday morning Eucharists to individuals who cannot currently attend services in person. These commissioned lay ministers carry with them not only the Bread of Life, but also the prayers of the community and our bonds that transcend space and time.

Why might someone request a visit from an EV? Certainly some recipients of this ministry have been homebound for a long period. It may have been months or years since they have been able to come to the cathedral.

Others, though, might appreciate a visit from an EV because: •

They have a newborn or infant in their household and are sticking close to home for a while.

•

They are staying in more during the pandemic because they, or others in their home, are immunocompromised and need to avoid large gatherings.

•

They have limited mobility for a while due to surgery, injury, or recent illness.

A visit can be something a person receives only once, many times, or “for a season.” Having a visit is actually a gift to our EVs and, indeed, to our whole parish, as it allows individuals to exercise the ministry to which they have been called and also strengthens our eucharistic fellowship.
