THE CATHEDRAL WELCOMES BISHOP WRIGHT THIS SUNDAY! This Sunday, October 17, the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip welcomes the Right Rev. Robert Wright, Bishop of Atlanta.

Bishop Wright will celebrate, preach, and confirm 33 youth at the 11:15 a.m. service. These youth confirmands participated in confirmation class throughout the 2020-2021 school year.

Bishop Wright will also present at the Dean’s Forum at 10:10 a.m. in Child Hall, and online.

2021 SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23, 9:30 A.M. - 3 P.M. Our conference with Dr. Amy-Jill Levine on October 23 is just two weeks away!

After much thought, prayer, and discussion, we have decided to make this a “hybrid” conference. We are attempting to balance health and safety with our desire for spiritual growth in community. This means that you may attend in-person, or you may attend online via Zoom. Dr. Levine will be presenting remotely over Zoom from Nashville, and will be broadcast into Child Hall and to all online attendees.

Dr. Levine's morning talks will cover: • •

Jesus the Jew: Piety, Politics, Prayer, and Practice, and Understanding the Parables as Jewish Stories: Of Pearls and Prodigals

Her afternoon talk will address: •

Does the Old Testament Point to Jesus? How Jews and Christians Read Scripture Differently

We have new options and pricing for attending the conference. If you have already registered, you should have received an email on October 7 regarding converting your ticket and getting a refund.

Attending in person: The conference will be held in our parish hall, as usual. Seating will be spaced out, but you can sit together with others in your pod. Dr. Levine will be joining us via Zoom on several large TV screens around the room, and the audio will be amplified through speakers. A delicious boxed lunch is included, and attendees will be able to spread out around the Cathedral’s campus to eat. Masks are required of all persons in our building.

We have seen over the years of this conference how important it is to be together in community to share the space of fellowship and spiritual growth. This is why we are going to such lengths to provide an in-person event!

Attending online: You may attend from the comfort of your home! Dr. Levine will engage online with participants during the gathering time and breaks, and will close the day with questions and dialogue.

OUTREACH

33RD ANNUAL HOMELESS REQUIEM MOVES OUTDOORS After discussions with our community partners and service providers to ensure the safety of all participants, we have decided to move the Homeless Requiem outdoors and downtown for 2021. The Cathedral thanks St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for providing a safe and accessible location for this sacred service remembering all who have died without housing this past year.

The Homeless Requiem will take place at The Park at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Monday, November 1 at 5:30 p.m. with a takeaway dinner following provided by Crossroads. The Rev. Devadas Lynton of Church of the Common Ground will preach. The Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral, will officiate.

The Cathedral will also be collecting hats, scarves, and gloves every Sunday before and after services through October 31 to distribute at the Requiem. Volunteers are needed over the next few weeks to deliver print materials; collect hats, gloves, and scarves on Sundays before and after services; and to be present and assist at the service. Congregational LIFE SUICIDE INTERVENTION TRAINING DECEMBER 10 – 11, 8 A.M. – 5 P.M. Whether at work, at home, with friends or teammates, or in more formal helping roles, many of us have been, or will be, called upon to respond to someone who is experiencing a mental-health crisis or considering suicide. The Cathedral is hosting a two-day workshop in one of the world’s leading suicide-intervention models, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). ASIST teaches individuals to provide a skilled intervention to a person who may be having thoughts of suicide and develop a collaborative safety plan to keep them safe and alive. The cost is $125, and continuing education credits are available. Please register at cathedralATL.org/ASIST. Once you register, you will receive an email for a link to pay for the workshop.

EXPLORING GRIEF AND LOSS Grief is our natural response to loss; and many of us have experienced loss recently, from the death of a loved one to the loss of a relationship, job, health, way of life, or sense of identity or purpose. There is no timeline to grief ! In fact, misconceptions and anxieties around grief, loss, and death can become barriers to tending to grief, whether the grief is our own or someone else’s. In this class, we will explore together the landscapes of grief and loss, with the aim of better understanding and caring for those (ourselves and others) who are experiencing grief.

Interactive and in-depth classes will be held on the following Tuesdays from 12 – 1:30 p.m.

Cathedral CHAPTER WE ARE ACCEPTING CANDIDATES FOR NOMINATION TO THE CATHEDRAL CHAPTER The Chapter Nominating Committee has begun their work of assembling a slate of nominees for the 2022 Cathedral Chapter. They invite anyone in the parish to submit recommendations of qualified candidates.

As the governing body of the Cathedral, the Chapter determines policy issues and provides stewardship of the Cathedral’s complex operations. Each month, the Chapter formally reviews the status of each of the Cathedral’s parochial entities and ministries, and oversees parish financial statements. Unlike smaller parishes, the Cathedral Chapter does not usually get involved in the day-to-day activities of the Cathedral. In our large and complex system, the Chapter of the Cathedral operates as a board of trustees or board of stewards.

Each Chapter member serves a three-year term. Our Church By-laws allow for members to be: “Any communicant of the parish in good and regular standing, who is not less than eighteen years of age, a regular attendant in Cathedral worship in the year preceding election, and known by the treasurer to have made and maintained a stated financial commitment for church support in the year preceding election.” (A “communicant” is a baptized member who has been confirmed.) The most important quality of an effective Chapter member is an ability to see the larger picture. Most have held leadership positions in more than one of the church’s ministries or parochial entities.

After recommendations are given to the Nominating Committee, eligibility is verified and candidates are polled to confirm their interest and availability. The committee then chooses six strong candidates to send to the Chapter for approval. Finally, Chapter members are formally elected by the parish at the annual parish meeting in December.

The Nominating Committee reviews candidates who will round out the experience of the continuing Chapter members. We will seek to represent a broad range of age and gender groups, and a broad range of ministries and parochial entities of the Cathedral community.

Members of the committee include: Teddi Bair, John Beane, Haven Long, and Coty Rosenblath. The Dean and Senior Warden Del King serve ex-officio.

THE GIFT OF RESPITE Respite Care Atlanta (RCA), an interfaith respite program that provides joy-filled care to those suffering from dementia, needs volunteers in order to grow and serve more folks. As one of the nine supporting churches, the Cathedral is a natural source of caring volunteers – and we ask that you consider joining in this ministry.

Housed at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church across Peachtree, RCA currently serves “members” of Club RCA on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. With a very small, expert, professional staff at the helm, volunteers carry the program in varying shifts and roles, including greeters, administrative helpers, lunch servers, a farewell group, program leaders and the most coveted job, companions to our Members.

SEWANEE AWARDS DEAN SAM CANDLER WITH HONORARY DOCTORATE The Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral of St. Philip, was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by the University of the South last month for his “exemplary willingness to take on the hard soul work of Christian responsibility and carry on that work faithfully and lovingly,” particularly in his lifelong devotion to faithful parish ministry.

Dean Candler loves the lively community and diversity of parish life. He has served as Dean of this Cathedral for the past 23 years, previously serving in parishes throughout Georgia and South Carolina.

The Very Rev. James Turrell, who was installed as Dean of the School of Theology at Sewanee during the same service at All Saints’ Chapel in Sewanee, Tennessee, remarked that Dean Candler is a “true son of the South” who has “labored devotedly under the burden of its peculiar history.” Turrell also said that throughout his career in a variety of parishes, Dean Candler has had an “elegant, compelling, and accessible voice of . . . Good Faith and the Common Good.”

Dean Candler thanked the Sewanee community at a gala dinner following the service: “I have given my ordained life in the Episcopal Church to parish ministry, over and over again; and, for me, Sewanee, and the University of the South, are the epitome of parish ministry. It is holy life. Faithful people, through thick and thin, learning and living with each other, in the presence of grace and in the presence of God, are what parish ministry is.”

We are grateful for Dean Candler’s continued service to this Cathedral parish community, and to the world. Congratulations, Dean Candler!
