THE PEOPLE OF GOD ARE MEETING TOGETHER! ALLELUIA! By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral I can hardly describe how wonderful the past month at the Cathedral has been for me! In meeting after meeting, and gathering after gathering, and Sunday after Sunday, I am seeing people again! I am being with people again! The people of God are gathering again! Alleluia! Maybe I was with you two weeks ago, when the Foyers Ministry held their fall dinner. Over seventy of you were there, huddled together, meeting new dinner companions, laughing and praying and smiling (we had no masks on, because we were outside!) I loved it! Maybe you were among the people I was with, the next Sunday evening, when Rod Bunn gathered our Cathedral ushers together for the Emile Fisher “Ushers’ Conclave!” Again, over seventy people were smiling outside, on the labyrinth, honoring the usher ministry and meeting new colleagues. Maybe you were among the hundreds of people who are coming back to church on Sundays. Maybe you were with us at our first glorious in-person Evensong of the year. Maybe you were among hundreds of us as we blessed animals last Sunday on St. Francis Day! Thank you! Oh, how we have missed each other. Every Sunday, literally, I see someone returning to Sunday worship for the first time in months. And I thank God for your presence. I remember when we conducted our first indoor service last spring, and the words of Psalm 126 rang in my ears: 1

2

3

When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then it was said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.” The LORD has done great things for us, and we rejoiced.

4

5

6

Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like the watercourses in the Negeb. May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy. Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves.

Well, I feel like the Lord is restoring our fortunes again. Thank you! This week, I am remembering another psalm, Psalm 133: 1

2

How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down upon the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes.

3

It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. For there the LORD ordained his blessing, life forevermore.

Finally, I hear words from the Epistle to the Hebrews: “let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another” (Hebrews 10:24–25). Yes, it is good, so good, to be meeting together again, in all sorts of ways. Obviously, the Cathedral parish is meeting in many more ways than those I have just described. From Bible studies to support groups, from study groups to youth groups, from funeral guild meetings to acolyte training, from choir rehearsals to Sunday school classes – in all these things, the people of God are meeting together! We are loving on each other again! Thank you!

OUTREACH THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATIONS! An enormous thank you to all of the wonderful parishioners and friends of the Cathedral for your generous donations of linens, clothes, shoes, toiletries, food items, and gift cards for the Inspiritus collection drive to benefit Afghan refugees. Eight carloads of donated items, more than $300 in gift cards, and $2,000 in donations were made to Inspiritus in the past month! Some of the more than 150 refugees being resettled by Inspiritus are being processed under a special immigration status known as "Humanitarian Parole," and do not qualify for the same federal funding or services as other refugees do, so your donations were critical to help welcome our Afghan neighbors to Georgia.

SPIRITUALITY 2021 SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23, 9:30 A.M. - 3 P.M. Amy-Jill Levine, Ph.D., is Rabbi Stanley M. Kessler Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Hartford Seminary and University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies Emerita, as well as Mary Jane Werthan Professor of Jewish Studies Emerita at Vanderbilt University. Understanding Jesus Means Understanding Judaism Jesus and his first followers were Jews, thoroughly grounded in Jewish Scripture, Jewish ethics and theology, and Jewish hopes. To understand the New Testament is thus to recover part of Jewish history. How has knowledge of this common history become lost? How might understanding the New Testament in its historical context provide not only a new way of approaching Jewish-Christian relations but also a new way of celebrating our common roots? Our topics include the Our Father prayer, the Parables of the Prodigal Son and the Good Samaritan, Jesus’ comments on observing Torah ( Jewish Law), and Jesus’ relations to women and to gentiles. This day-long conference includes lunch. For questions, please contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@ cathedralATL.org. Registration and more information can be found at cathedralATL.org/spirituality.

Worship SUPPORT WHY I LOVE SERVING ON THE ALTAR GUILD by Mary Caroline Cravens Nearly 10 years ago, at the end of a 12:15 Eucharist, Mary Mercer asked me whether I might like to join the Altar Guild. I had no experience beyond acolyting (as a teenager) and observing consecration of the elements each week in church. I didn’t feel qualified at all – I thought the specialized terminology and precise protocol might be intimidating! But Mary said that she would train me and that she needed someone to serve just once a month. I never imagined how glad I would be to have said "Yes!" I served once or twice a month for weekday services in St. Mary’s for several years. It quickly became one of my favorite times – entering the dim and quiet chapel, turning on the lights, tidying books, and straightening chairs, opening the sacristy, laying out linens, silver vessels, and elements on the credence table, marking the missal and the readings for the service and finally lighting the candles on the altar. After the service, clearing the table, carefully washing everything and putting it away, was equally solitary and lovely. I was eager to substitute anytime someone had to miss! I love the beauty of our liturgies and serving on the Altar Guild allowed me to help create that beauty. Before long I also began to serve for larger special services – particularly family services during Lent. Later, Mary asked me to take charge of the roster for St. Mary’s, introducing me to the rest of the members serving in that chapel. I also began to serve once a month for the 8:45 Sunday service, where I worked with an excellent partner, who then became a good friend. Ultimately, it’s both a quiet contemplative ministry and a great way to meet other wonderful Cathedral members (we have around 60 women and men each serving for one or two services a month). Outside the pandemic, we have a couple of purely social events each year as well. We would love for you to join us and are happy to teach you everything you need to know! We currently need volunteers for the 11:15 a.m. Sunday service and for 4:00 p.m. Evensong (and we will need help in St. Mary’s as soon as those services resume). Please contact Mary Mercer at mmercer02@comcast.net to hear more or to volunteer.

Congregational LIFE SUICIDE INTERVENTION TRAINING DECEMBER 10 – 11, 8 A.M. – 5 P.M. Whether at work, at home, with friends or teammates, or in more formal helping roles, many of us have been, or will be, called upon to respond to someone who is experiencing a mental-health crisis or considering suicide. The Cathedral is hosting a two-day workshop in one of the world’s leading suicide-intervention models, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). ASIST teaches individuals to provide a skilled intervention to a person who may be having thoughts of suicide and develop a collaborative safety plan to keep them safe and alive. The cost is $125, and continuing education credits are available. Please register at cathedralATL.org/ ASIST. Once you register, you will receive an email for a link to pay for the workshop. Contact Hillary Jones, hjones@cathedralATL. org or 404-365-1038, with any questions.

EXPLORING GRIEF AND LOSS Grief is our natural response to loss; and many of us have experienced loss recently, from the death of a loved one to the loss of a relationship, job, health, way of life, or sense of identity or purpose. There is no timeline to grief ! In fact, misconceptions and anxieties around grief, loss, and death can become barriers to tending to grief, whether the grief is our own or someone else’s. In this class, we will explore together the landscapes of grief and loss, with the aim of better understanding and caring for those (ourselves and others) who are experiencing grief. Interactive and in-depth classes will be held on the following Tuesdays from 12 – 1:30 p.m. October 19, October 26, November 2, and November 9 An overview of the class will be held on the following Sundays at 10:10 a.m.: October 31, November 7, November 14, and November 21 For more information, contact Canon Cathy Zappa, czappa@cathedralATL.org

Cathedral CHAPTER WE ARE ACCEPTING CANDIDATES FOR NOMINATION TO THE CATHEDRAL CHAPTER The Chapter Nominating Committee has begun their work of assembling a slate of nominees for the 2022 Cathedral Chapter. They invite anyone in the parish to submit recommendations of qualified candidates. As the governing body of the Cathedral, the Chapter determines policy issues and provides stewardship of the Cathedral’s complex operations. Each month, the Chapter formally reviews the status of each of the Cathedral’s parochial entities and ministries, and oversees parish financial statements. Unlike smaller parishes, the Cathedral Chapter does not usually get involved in the day-to-day activities of the Cathedral. In our large and complex system, the Chapter of the Cathedral operates as a board of trustees or board of stewards. Each Chapter member serves a three-year term. Our Church By-laws allow for members to be: “Any communicant of the parish in good and regular standing, who is not less than eighteen years of age, a regular attendant in Cathedral worship in the year preceding election, and known by the treasurer to have made and maintained a stated financial commitment for church support in the year preceding election.” (A “communicant” is a baptized member who has been confirmed.) The most important quality of an effective Chapter member is an ability to see the larger picture. Most have held leadership positions in more than one of the church’s ministries or parochial entities. After recommendations are given to the Nominating Committee, eligibility is verified and candidates are polled to confirm their interest and availability. The committee then chooses six strong candidates to send to the Chapter for approval. Finally, Chapter members are formally elected by the parish at the annual parish meeting in December. The Nominating Committee reviews candidates who will round out the experience of the continuing Chapter members. We will seek to represent a broad range of age and gender groups, and a broad range of ministries and parochial entities of the Cathedral community. Members of the committee include: Teddi Bair, John Beane, Haven Long, Coty Rosenblath. The Dean and Senior Warden Del King serve ex-officio. Names of recommendations should be submitted along with a brief supporting statement to any Nominating Committee member or to the Office of the Dean, 404-365-1031, or jmahood@cathedralATL.org by October 20.
