HOMECOMING 2021! By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral We love you! We miss you! Many of us have been saying this for eighteen months, haven’t we? We said it when we had to close the Cathedral building back in 2020. Then, we said it weekly, online, in pre-recorded liturgies. We said it together during countless Zoom meetings. We said it when we began to re-gather, safely, in outdoor services of koinonia. We said it when we re-opened the building for Sunday services, wearing masks. We said it when we began to be vaccinated. Then we said it when we began to hug each other (safely and vaccinated!) We love you! We miss you! We want to get back together! For the past twenty years, the Cathedral has observed “Homecoming Sunday” in mid-August, as a way to welcome each other back from summer breaks, and as a way to resume faithful routines and schedules. In the past, we have asked every guild and ministry to display their service in a “Ministry Fair” on that Sunday. And, those events have been festive and glorious! This year, it goes without saying, is different. About three months ago, we imagined that, just maybe, August 15 would bring us complete freedom from Covid-19 restrictions; some of us even imagined that everyone would be vaccinated and free to hug and share food and drink together! Alas, the Covid-19 virus is still with us. Alas, we were forced two weeks ago to return to the safe practice of requiring masks inside the Cathedral building. We imagined a grand festive gathering inside the parish hall that would serve a double emphasis: a homecoming and an exuberant thanksgiving reception for the Reverend Carolynne Williams. Well, plans have changed. HOWEVER! THEY ARE BOTH STILL HAPPENING! Giving thanks for Carolynne Williams is still happening! Homecoming is still happening! Indeed, Homecoming 2021 will be happening this week, and the next, and the next! Instead of a grand festive gathering inside the parish hall, I am thankful that several splendid parishioners have agreed to host “Village Visits” this weekend! We have arranged for Cathedral parishioners to be invited to a neighbor’s house or gathering space, in all safety, as a way of greeting each other and saying “Welcome back,” and saying “We love you! We miss you!” Actually, there are more parishioners and neighborhoods who wanted to host a Village Visit, but who are waiting for safer and calmer conditions. We understand! Thus, many of you have received an email invitation to one of these Village Visits. As conditions become safer and calmer, the rest of us will receive our invitations. Our hosts are volunteering some tremendous generosity and love, and each host is designing their own specific event. But the theme is the same everywhere around this beautiful Cathedral community: We love you! We miss you! We want to get back together! But it will take time. Our Homecoming 2021 might well occur over the next several weeks and months. That is fine! AND! We are still honoring the Reverend Carolynne Williams this Sunday, August 15, in a special gathering – outside – between the 8:45 and 11:15 services. After over twenty beautiful years here at the Cathedral, Canon Carolynne Williams actually moved gracefully to retirement this past year. We had no way to thank her, in person, for her beautiful service and ministry. Please do join us, outside in the Cloister Garden, for this special reception for her this Sunday, August 15, at 10:00 a.m. Further, we do hope to assemble a Ministry Fair, which will be next Sunday, August 22, in the Parish Hall at 10:00 a.m. We anticipate a scaled down event, with safety protocols in place, and we realize that not everyone will be comfortable attending. First, no judgement! Please attend if you feel healthy and safe doing so. continued on back page...

FOYERS MINISTRY REKINDLED The Foyers ministry is being rekindled at the Cathedral! All Cathedral parishioners, especially newcomers, are welcome to join the next Foyers session. The Foyers ministry is a great way for adults to connect with others in our congregation, in a small group setting. To kick off this new session, we will be creating small groups to meet together at Super Foyers on Sunday, September 19, at 6 p.m. in Child Hall. At Super Foyers, each group will schedule get-togethers through March 2022. These are hosted by a couple of group members in a home. If you would like to be a part of the fall/winter session of Foyers, please contact Jennifer DuBose, jdubose@goddard-group.com, by Monday, August 16.

WORSHIP SUPPORT Opportunities There is a plaque at the entrance to the Cathedral Atrium that reads, “The Cathedral of St. Philip: A House of Prayer for All People.” And that is what we are! Worship and common prayer are central to our life together, our ministry of hospitality, and our witness to the world. Many, many volunteers—saints of the church—work together to support our worship, as a way to offer their many, wonderful, and diverse gifts. Behind a single, typical Sunday’s worship service are at least 60 volunteers! We love and give thanks for our volunteers, and we depend on them! Please consider volunteering to support our worship life. Not only is it a meaningful and important way to serve, but it also just might deepen your experience of the liturgy and lead you to new friends.
ACOLYTES (YOUTH) Youth acolytes, sixth grade and above, assist at the worship services at the Cathedral. Our next training is offered on August 29 from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Cathedral. For more information about Youth Acolytes see page 6. Please join us!
ACOLYTES (ADULTS) Adult acolytes assist in the 4 p.m. worship services as well as other special services at the Cathedral. Training is offered as needed throughout the year.
ALTAR GUILD If you are looking for a more contemplative way to serve the parish by supporting worship, joining the Altar Guild is an excellent option. Members of the Altar Guild prepare the altar and set the credence table for the celebration of Holy Eucharist on Sunday mornings, for Evensong (during the program year), and for the weekday 12:15 p.m. Eucharists, and then clean up afterwards. Most members regularly serve at one service a month in one or more categories (i.e. Sunday mornings, Evensong, weekdays). We are particularly in need of volunteers to serve at Evensong, and on weekdays (when those services return to the calendar). No previous Altar Guild experience is necessary. We are happy to show you how to do it!
FLOWER GUILD The Flower Guild arranges the flowers for Sunday services, festivals, weddings, funerals, and receptions. Arrangers are part of a team that arranges flowers every three months. The entire guild helps with the Christmas and Easter festivals. Altar flowers in the Cathedral and Mikell Chapel may be given in memory or in thanksgiving of loved ones. The minimum suggested donation is $100 per name. For information on donating, contact Melana Dickson, 404-365-1034, mdickson@cathedralATL.org.
FUNERAL GUILD This group of parish members assists at funerals through hospitality and the altar guild, in addition to ushering and greeting guests. The Funeral Guild provides important assistance, hospitality, and worship support for funerals. Many a mourner has commented about how much this guild’s ministry meant to them.
INTERCESSORS AND LECTORS These confirmed members read the scriptural lessons or lead the congregation in the Prayers of the People during the Sunday morning Eucharist. We are offering a training after the 11:15 a.m. service on Sunday, August 22.
USHERS Approximately 350 men and women serve on usher teams, greeting and welcoming members and visitors, distributing worship leaflets, assisting in the seating of our worshippers, and being attentive to those who need assistance. During Holy Communion they assist people moving to and from the altar rail. The usher ministry is in need of ushers for all Sunday morning services, Evensong and non-Sunday services, Christmas Eve or Holy Week services. Ushers typically serve at seven to nine ushered services a year, two consecutive Sundays at a time. Should you be interested in joining the Usher Ministry, please speak to one of the ushers wearing a white, yellow, or red carnation. They will take your name and contact information. You will be contacted to discuss your availability and assist in selecting a team you may wish to join.
WEDDING GUILD Wedding Guild members work with each couple before their wedding rehearsal, assist the clergy with the rehearsal and coordinate preparations for the ceremony on the wedding day. The guild is the welcoming committee for those getting married as well as their families and guests. We want all participants and attendees of Cathedral weddings to feel welcome, blessed, and have a beautiful experience. The guild welcomes and needs new members. To learn more about our ministry, please stop by our table at the Ministry Fair on August 22.
Please contact Hillary Jones, 404-365-1038, hjones@catheralATL.org, or Canon Cathy Zappa, 404-365-1043, czappa@cathedralATL.org, for additional information or if you are interested in participating in any of these ministries.
YOUTH YOUTH ACOLYTE REGISTRATION IS OPEN! Sign up to be a youth acolyte! We need you! All middle and high school youth are eligible to serve in this very important ministry, which is a good way to participate more deeply in the liturgy, to practice leadership, and to get to know other Cathedral youth. Acolyte teams are led by high school captains and typically serve twice a month. There will be a training/refresher for new and returning acolytes on Sunday, August 29 from 4:30–6 p.m. In addition, there will be a training for all new and returning acolyte captains and adult advisors on Sunday, August 15 from 12:30–1:30 p.m. We care about all our volunteers and are mindful of your health and safety. To that end, we will be monitoring health-and-safety guidelines and modifying our acolyting protocols accordingly. If you would like to acolyte in 2021–2022, please register at cathedralATL.org/acolyte, so that we have your most updated information. You can also stop by the youth acolyte table at the Ministry Fair on Sunday, August 22, to register.
YOUTH SUNDAY SCHOOL AND BIBLE STUDY RESUME IN SEPTEMBER Sunday morning youth formation will begin on Sunday, September 12 from 10:10 - 11 a.m. This is for all youth in grades 6-12. Bible Study will begin Tuesday, September 14, at 6:30 p.m. Contact Keith Dumke, kdumke@cathedralATL.org for more information and to register.
Children's MINISTRY CHILDREN'S CHAPEL AND GODLY PLAY RETURN! Children's Chapel will begin Sunday, August 22 during the 8:45 a.m. service. Children ages 3–5th grade are invited to join the procession out of the Cathedral during the sequence hymn to participate in an age appropriate liturgy. They will return at the offertory hymn for Holy Eucharist. Masks are required. Godly Play will return on Sunday, September 12 at 10:10 a.m. Registration for Godly Play can be found at cathedralATL.org/godlyplay. Please contact Lisa McNamara, lmcnamara@cathedralATL. org, for more information.
ONGOING OUTREACH PROJECTS Every year during the Cathedral's Week of Wonder, the children participate in an outreach project. This year the children's ministry had two. They continued their partnership with Phoebe Ellis and collected books for her literacy cart for the Boyce L. Ansley School. The literacy cart helps connect the classroom to the library and gives the children more access to books. The children also started a collection of school supplies for participants of the La Amistad after school tutoring program. These supplies will help students be ready for the new school year! Both projects are on-going through the month of August. Books and supplies can be left at the information desk in the Atrium of the Cathedral. For a list of books and supplies needed, contact Lisa McNamara lmcnamara@cathedralATL.org.
SPIRITUALITY
2021 SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE Join us in welcoming Amy-Jill Levine, Ph.D., for our 2021 Spirituality Conference. Dr. Levine is the Mary Jane Werthan Professor of Jewish Studies and University Professor of New Testament Studies, at Vanderbilt. Understanding Jesus Means Understanding Judaism Jesus and his first followers were Jews, thoroughly grounded in Jewish Scripture, Jewish ethics and theology, and Jewish hopes. To understand the New Testament is thus to recover part of Jewish history. How has knowledge of this common history become lost? How might understanding the New Testament in its historical context provide not only a new way of approaching Jewish-Christian relations but also a new way of celebrating our common roots? Our topics include the Our Father prayer, the Parables of the Prodigal Son and the Good Samaritan, Jesus’ comments on observing Torah ( Jewish Law), and Jesus’ relations to women and to gentiles. This day-long conference includes lunch, and there will be a book-signing after. For questions, please contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@cathedralATL.org. Registration and more information can be found at cathedralATL.org/spirituality.
Adult EDUCATION OLD FASHIONED SUNDAY SCHOOL RESUMES THIS FALL SUNDAYS AT 10:10 A.M. IN CHILD HALL AND ON ZOOM Old Fashioned Sunday School will meet every Sunday at 10:10 a.m., beginning September 12, to discuss topics of general interest to the Cathedral community. All are welcome. You will find a light heart, warm welcome, and good coffee! This year the class will, in a sense, be a return to the basics. Each class will address themes that arise in the lectionary readings scheduled to be read in church on that Sunday. Specifically, there will be five separate series. As we conclude Ordinary Time in the fall, the class will open with a series on the Gospel of Mark, focused on the political nature of the gospel. For Advent, the class will study the Gospel of Thomas to prepare us for the wonders of Christmas. The series scheduled for the seasons of Christmas and Epiphany will focus on the feast day liturgies that we typically celebrate during these seasons. The Lenten series will address the spirituality of death and dying with a focus on how hope helps us make sense of suffering. Finally, the Easter series will focus on the psychological dimensions of faith and how they might help us to live into the idea of resurrection now. It’s going to be fun and will help you use your faith to find meaning in your daily life. This class meets in Child Hall and is available online. For more information, contact Canon George Maxwell at gmaxwell@ cathedralATL.org

Yes, we are still stretching our patience in August of 2021. Tension and anxiety and concern are still with us. But this Sunday’s lesson from Ephesians might speak specifically to us: “Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. ….Be imitators of God, as beloved children, and walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Ephesians 4:31-5:2).

I understand that there are some valid reasons to be tired, and even bitter. But, the Church, the Body of Christ, has more reason to be joyful and thankful. We have been given the opportunity to love! We have a chance to walk together in love, as a fragrant offerings to each other! I pray that these next two weeks of Homecoming 2021 events give us a chance to resume that “walking together in love.” We love each other here. We have missed each other here. We want to get back together! Thanks be to God!

CATHEDRAL Grounds Among some of the other campus improvements we’ve made this summer, we recently installed hearing loops in the Cathedral Nave and Child Hall. Hearing loops take a signal from a PA system and transmit it through a discreetly hidden wire loop surrounding a seating space. Anyone with a tele-coil equipped hearing aid can use the system without additional equipment by simply switching their personal hearing aid to the tele-coil/T-coil position. This T-coil program has to be activated by your audiologist. Sound clarity is greatly increased because the distance between the speaker and the listener is bridged and background noise is nearly eliminated; there is no echo or distortion produced by room acoustics. It's like wiring the microphone directly into the hearing aid. This newly-installed system covers all seating areas in the Nave and Child Hall. For more information, contact David Rocchio, drocchio@ cathedralATL.org.
CELEBRATING CAROLYNNE WILLIAMS! Join us for a reception on Homecoming Sunday, August 15, at 10:00 a.m. in the Cloister Garden to celebrate the ministry of the Rev. Canon Carolynne Williams, following her retirement last year.
