HOLY WEEK with the Cathedral of St. Philip From the Rev. Canon Cathy Zappa Canon for Liturgy and Pastoral Care Let us pray… together! Yes, this year, we at the Cathedral of St. Philip have continued to pray together—we have persisted in praying together—throughout this pandemic and this season of “social-distancing.” We have prayed online; we have prayed with family and friends in our homes; we have prayed at the church, in the Cloister Garden, in the Memorial Garden, and on the Labyrinth, and in several other holy places outdoors. With God’s help, we have prayed our way through an entire church year, and we will pray and walk with Jesus through this Holy Week, too.

On Palm Sunday, we will gather in-person at our regular worship times: 7:45 a.m., 8:45 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 1 p.m. (in Spanish), for the Liturgy of the Palms, the Passion Gospel read by Cathedral Youth, and Holy Eucharist. Online services will be at 8:45 and 11:15 a.m.

Then, with Maundy Thursday, we will enter into the high holy days of the Christian year, the Triduum. This is a singular liturgy that stretches over three days: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. On Maundy Thursday, we remember Jesus giving his disciples and us the Mandatum, to share in the Eucharistic feast and to love one another. With its focus on foot-washing and a shared meal, this liturgy is especially suited to homes. We will have an online service at 7 p.m., with guidance for observing these liturgies in the intimate setting of your home.

On Good Friday, we will have online services at noon and 7 p.m., as well as in-person liturgies at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. In addition, we will pilgrimage around our campus for the Stations of the Cross at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. (in Spanish).

And after three days, alleluia!, we move from the darkness of Good Friday and Holy Saturday to the new light of Easter, beginning with our Easter Vigil­—in-person at 6 a.m. on Easter Sunday. There also will be online services at 8:45 and 11:15 a.m., and in-person services at 8:45 a.m., 11:15 a.m., and 1 p.m.

One of the beloved traditions of our Easter services is the dogwood asperges, or blessing through the sprinkling of holy water, with dogwood branches! To celebrate the blessing of new life in Christ, please send a picture or short video of your own “dogwood asperges”—sprinkling water with dogwood branches or whatever branches you can find. (By Monday, March 29.)

In addition, for online celebrations of specific holy days, you may want to prepare the following and have them on hand during the liturgy:

PALM SUNDAY—any kind of branch that is native to where you are, including palm and dogwood.

MAUNDY THURSDAY—bowl of water and a towel for foot-washing, and bread and wine (or your drink of choice) for a sacred meal.

GOOD FRIDAY—a cross.

EASTER SUNDAY—candle(s), a bowl of water, dogwood branches.

CONFIRMATION Class of 2020 blessings and congratulations to these individuals who will be confirmed this weekend at the cathedral. they completed confirmation class last spring, but these services have been delayed due to the pandemic.

HEAR WHAT THE SPIRIT IS SAYING TO GOD’S PEOPLE SUNDAYS AT 1 P.M., OUTSIDE AT THE LANIER HOUSE

This year in Old Fashioned Sunday School, we’re taking a more eastern approach to the season of Epiphany by exploring the Jesus Christ that is manifested in the Gospel of John. It isn't like the reading of the fourth gospel that you are used to hearing, though. We are reading it from the center. Much of the approach taken in the course is from The Good Wine: Reading John from the Center by Bruno Barnhart.

This group provides a space for people to engage in different spiritual practices. Each meeting, we learn about a new practice together, engage in this practice, and then split into small groups to talk about our experiences. Practice-based interaction with God is a defining characteristic of Anglicanism. In this group, we hope to quiet the mind and invite the Holy Spirit into our presence. All are welcome and no experience is required!

Cathedral Seminarian Will Drosos leads this class, along with Canon Cathy Zappa.
