St. Veronica's GUILD COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: FRIENDSHIP CENTER AT CHURCH OF THE HOLY COMFORTER The sign in front of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter and Friendship Center, in the Ormewood Park area of Atlanta, profoundly states, “All are Welcome.” Sixty percent of their congregation consists of adults usually marginalized by mental health challenges, cognitive disabilities, poverty and little family support, who reside in personal care homes. The Friendship Center has created the loving family community many lack, with weekday activities that include gardening, bingo, arts and crafts, yoga, and more, along with nourishing communal meals. In March, the pandemic caused the Friendship Center to close, leaving participants to shelter in their often-crowded personal care homes that may not offer meals. Clergy, staff, and volunteers at the Holy Comforter and the Friendship Center instantly pivoted to provide food while sustaining a loving community. Since March, they have been preparing and delivering meal packages three times a week to participants still sheltering in their personal care homes. To read more about the Friendship Center, visit friendshipcenter-atlanta.org St. Veronica’s Guild has supported Holy Comforter staff and participants with a supply of hygiene items six times annually. The guild has continued that support in the pandemic. Rather than give items in bulk, individual hygiene kits are prepared to be delivered with the meals, and may have art supplies, masks, and other items. The Friendship Center at Holy Comforter is one of the four ministries that will benefit from St. Veronica’s Guild January Epiphany fund drive. Watch for the camel, our Epiphany symbol of bringing gifts to those in need and donate to the toiletries fund at cathedralATL.org/contribute.

Adult EDUCATION These classes gather on Zoom at 10:10 a.m. on Sunday. Go to cathedralATL.org/education for links.

OLD FASHIONED SUNDAY SCHOOL January 3 through February 14, 2021 What does Jesus mean when he says “I am”? Epiphany is the season that we use to celebrate the manifestation of Christ. In the Western churches, we tend to focus on the visit of the magi and the worldwide mission of the church. The Eastern churches tend to focus instead on Christ’s baptism by John, when the heavens opened and a voice from heaven declared Jesus to be God’s beloved Son, and the miracle of Cana in Galilee, where Christ first “manifested” his glory. This year in Old Fashioned Sunday School, we’ll take a more eastern approach to the season of Epiphany by exploring the Jesus Christ that is manifested in the Gospel of John. It won’t be like the reading of the fourth gospel that you are used to hearing, though. We will be reading it from the center. We’ll assume that the story of the sea-crossing (6:16-21) is the structural center of the gospel and talk about what the gospel might be telling us about Jesus if this is true. Much of the approach taken in the course will be from The Good Wine: Reading John from the Center by Bruno Barnhart.

HEAR WHAT THE SPIRIT IS SAYING TO GOD’S PEOPLE: EXPLORING CONTEMPLATIVE PRACTICES AND MEDITATION TOGETHER This group provides a space for people to engage in different spiritual practices. Each meeting, we learn about a new practice together, engage in this practice, and then split into small groups to talk about our experiences. Practicebased interaction with God is a defining characteristic of Anglicanism. In this group, we hope to quiet the mind and invite the Holy Spirit into our presence. All are welcome and no experience is required! Cathedral Seminarian Will Drosos leads this class, along with Canon Cathy Zappa.

OUTREACH CATHEDRAL DELIVERS 24 HABITAT CHRISTMAS BASKETS The process and "baskets" looked different this year, but there was plenty of love and enthusiasm from our Christmas elves who contributed to, assembled, and delivered Christmas baskets to our Habitat homeowners. St. Clare's Guild provided huge support by soliciting contributions from all of the guilds at the Cathedral, producing a wonderful bounty of cheer. This year we added Christmas cards and ornaments made by children from many of our Cathedral families which were a big hit. One homeowner said, "The family is really enjoying the goodies. Also, the hand-crafted gifts the kids made were the bomb." Even before we delivered, we heard from almost half our families with words of thanks and gratitude for support over many years. Thank you all for helping to make a difference with this long running and successful mission for our communities.
