WHEN IS CHRISTMAS? By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral When is Christmas this year? One answer I am accustomed to giving, every year, is that Christmas is whenever the Christmas Pageant happens! Every year, I delight in saying that Christmas is here when we participate in, or watch, the children’s Christmas pageant. And it’s true again this year! A few weeks ago, Christmas came to the Cathedral community on Saturday, December 5. That was the day our splendid staff and spectacular volunteers arranged for almost 120 children to come to church, safely masked and in groups of twenty at a time, to film their roles in our Children’s Christmas Pageant. I was there, simply to cheer people on, and to provide what meager support I could. But I was overjoyed to see so many friends and familiar faces and parishioners. With masks on, we talked. We caught up with each other. We watched children enjoy each other. The day was warm and bright, and our hearts were warm and bright. And creativity erupted! Dan Murphy and Brant McCaskill were envisioning the script as we went along. Sara Chapman, Mary Sorrell, and Haven Long were dressing children, herding sheep, and gathering angels. Caroline Robinson had the choristers arranged. What fun! The Roman soldiers got to walk out on the roof of the Cathedral. Safely! Safety was the order throughout the day. It was simply fun. It was Christmas. Christmas is being with people. I felt the same energy a week or so later when I participated in the Preschool Christmas Pageant. Sadly, that pageant was not live either. We filmed it, and recorded it, in an empty Child Hall, with eager and masked children. But we still had fun. And I loved narrating, again, those wonderful words: “Mary and Joseph were travelling to Bethlehem. Mary was going to have a baby!” Obviously, I realize that we cannot be with each other this Christmas, in our usual ways. But many of us are acting heroically. Here at the Cathedral, we are having to develop more outdoor services than we anticipated, limited to fifty people at a time; and we simply do not want to turn anyone away. Please do touch someone this December. I do not mean, necessarily, physically touching them. Call someone. Or invite someone to watch the Cathedral online services. The children’s pageant will be on at 4:00 pm on Christmas Eve, and I am eager to see the finished product! My own Christmas sermon this year is titled, “You Are Not Alone!” When is Christmas? Well, I have already written and recorded the sermon! But it will be viewed at 8:30 and 11:30 on Christmas Eve, and on WSB-TV. Please tune in! Get someone to watch it with you. We celebrate God touching us by touching each other. Please make a financial contribution to the Cathedral, too! That financial support is surely a critical way of touching each other, and even touching the work of God here. We need your financial support, especially this year when a few people have been unable to fulfill their pledges. We need you, each and every one of you! Thank you! Thank you for touching each other. I don’t mean unsafe or unwise touching. I mean connecting and loving and being in relationship. Thank you for touching the Cathedral this year. We sure want to touch you, too. At Christmas, God touches all of humanity, in Jesus Christ; and we celebrate by sharing that touch. You are not alone. Yes, Christmas is happening throughout this December, and it will happen again. No matter what actual day it is, Christmas is when we touch each other. Thank you!

St. Veronica's GUILD SPOTLIGHT: CROSSROADS COMMUNITY MINISTRIES Crossroads Community Ministries Executive Director Tony Johns recently shared a striking statistic: African Americans make up 52% of Atlanta’s population, but represent almost 90% of people experiencing homelessness. Adverse life events, mental and physical health conditions, and lack of affordable housing all contribute. Crossroads is changing that statistic with their one-stop shop approach. Sydney Tucker, their new community housing specialist, has moved 31 households into stable housing since summer, with five more neighbors almost housing ready. Crossroads’ one stop approach for newly homeless men, women and children begins with a meal, then links to obtain identification papers, and access to transportation, social services, and health care. The combination ensures that over 400 new guests who arrive each month, 40% of whom are women and children, can successfully access resources to stabilize their lives. Read more on the Crossroads web site, crossroadsatlanta.org St. Veronica’s Guild regularly supplies Crossroads with toiletries for guests. With COVID-19, the numbers of arriving guests have increased and the guild has had to shift from collecting toiletries to using monetary donations to purchase needed items for all four ministries. Crossroads guests also receive a sack meal Monday - Saturday. The guild will hold a January Epiphany Fund Drive so we can help Crossroads and other ministries meet their increasing needs for toiletries during the pandemic. Watch for the Epiphany camels, who symbolize bringing gifts to strangers in need, and please consider making a gift to the St. Veronica’s Guild Toiletries Project at cathedralATL.org/contribute.

Cathedral ANTIQUES SHOW

ANTIQUES SHOW TICKETS MAKE GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFTS The Cathedral Antiques Show will celebrate its 50th Anniversary, January 21-23, 2021. It is hard to believe it all began in 1969 when Episcopal Church Women at The Cathedral of St. Philip sponsored a talk on antiques to benefit community outreach. The show has evolved to feature dealers from across the country and experts in antiques, design, floral arts, and decor. Most importantly, over $5.4 million has been raised to support Atlanta nonprofits through proceeds from the show. 2021 Show Chair Anne Matthews along with Co-Chair Caroline Wallace are pleased to announce Boog and Sam Candler will serve as Honorary Show Chairs and Norman Askins as the Architectural and Design Chair. We are proud to support our beneficiary, the 180 Degree Kitchen at City of Refuge - a life-changing ministry on Atlanta’s Westside. Since 1997 City of Refuge has helped more than 20,000 individuals return to self-sufficiency by focusing on four key impact areas: health and wellness, housing, job training, and youth development. Hardships caused by COVID-19 have intensified the need for these vital services. Proceeds of the 2021 show will fund a comprehensive renovation, equipping the 180 Degree Kitchen to meet present and future demand for meals and vocational training in a highly efficient setting. Since our beneficiary selection in early spring, planning has included a show “reimagined” if circumstances did not allow for an inperson event. Given the recent increase of COVID-19 and the uncertainty of its progression in the coming months, the Cathedral Antiques Show committee made the decision to pivot to a full virtual format. It’s official! We have partnered with David and John Duke at Living Stories.TV, whose creative genius through film will bring our exciting events to you in a format designed exclusively for the Cathedral Antiques Show. All of our favorite offerings will be celebrated, just in a different way. Please refer to our schedule of events for the most current information. All of our events and tickets are available on our website: cathedralantiques.org. While we are unable to gather in person for the 2021 Cathedral Antiques Show, together we celebrate this milestone event and support the mission of City of Refuge.
