I GIVE THANKS FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO GIVE THANKS By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral My immediate family members have resigned ourselves this year to a separated Thanksgiving. We will not be together. Of course, it’s a challenge every year, determining which child will go to in-law families and who will be out of town. Boog and I have three married children and now six grandchildren. Further, I have parents whom I want to visit; and I have three married siblings. I like seeing all of them! Yes, though there are inevitable disappointments every year in the Thanksgiving arrangements, the Thanksgiving arrangements for the year 2020 are, of course, tremendous. Every one of us, it seems, with or without families, is planning a separated Thanksgiving. The wonderful urge to gather people together, or to attend gatherings, is sadly absent during this coronavirus pandemic. What do we do, then, whether with people or not, about that particular typical Thanksgiving gathering exercise? You know the one I mean. It occurs when we pause to ask our inner selves a Thanksgiving question. Or, the person at the head of the table, asks that particular question. Someone, everywhere, will ask: “What are you thankful for this year?” My immediate family asked that question this past Sunday. Knowing we would miss being together during Thanksgiving week, a few us in the Atlanta area gathered outside at a pasture, under a pavilion-type hay barn on a windy afternoon, ten days ahead of time, for a Thanksgiving turkey sandwich picnic. (We had agreed that the turkey sandwiches on the day after Thanksgiving are just as good, if not better, than the Thanksgiving feast itself !) Outside in the wind, with no one sitting too close to anyone, we felt fairly safe. Still, who knows? During this 2020 year, the disappointments and losses, the anxieties and the worries, and calamitous diseases themselves, have come crashing into us week after week. We bear up against one wave, only to have another wave slam into us the next week. The waves, like demons, are legion: social isolation in a pandemic, unease with political elections, online schooling, too many online meetings, social unrest, economic uncertainty, financial worry, those regular annual sicknesses that are not Covid-19, and then the constant replanning and re-arranging of most everything in our lives. Those of us still standing are tired, fatigued, exhausted. Right: the list of things I am not thankful for is itself overwhelming! What could I possibly be thankful for during this year’s Thanksgiving season? I have one answer this year. I am thankful for those of you who do give thanks this year. I am thankful for those around me who give thanks. It really is something else. It is wonderful, overwhelmingly powerful, when I hear someone stand up at a table, or speak out at a meeting, testifying of something they are thankful for. And it is happening! Last Sunday at our family Thanksgiving picnic, in many a church meeting, in conversations with friends, I have heard you offer thanks. And what a wonderful collection of thanksgivings we heard in last Sunday’s online service! From our screens, we heard waves of thanks from our Cathedral families and children, arranged by our cathedral staff observing United Thank Offering Sunday. Thank you! It is your mere act of thanksgiving that touches me deeply. The simple act of thanksgiving is the generous event. Yes, the things for which we are thankful are themselves beautiful—family, friends, relationships, time, a job, peace, health, whatever—but the act of thanksgiving is even more beautiful. It takes courage and grace to give thanks in times of disappointment and loss. I am so thankful for those of you who find that courage and grace. I am thankful for those of you who give thanks. Your example, your thanksgiving, is providing strength, and health, and hope, and grace, for the world! That is love. Thank you.

OLD FASHIONED SUNDAY SCHOOL
PARENTING UNSCRIPTED
The Rev. Canon George Maxwell is taking a new look at what Jesus was doing on Maundy Thursday when he washed his disciples’ feet and shared supper with them. In her book, The Holy Thursday Revolution, the philosopher Beatrice Bruteau argues that Jesus was showing us a new way to think about ourselves and organize our society. We’re talking about how this evolution of thought offers us hope in the midst of increasing anxiety caused by the pandemic, social unrest, and election season.
Parenting is hard...find a community of support. Join other parents in discussions around faith, parenting teenagers, and how to support their spiritual growth. This group is led by Scott Russell and others.
EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY Education for Ministry (EfM) is a program of the School of Theology of the University of the South. Participants commit one year at a time to meet weekly in seminars led by mentors trained in studying the Bible, church history, and theology, while also developing a wonderful community of members. There is a weekly lesson and study guide, but no tests or papers to prepare. A few spaces are available for an EfM class that begins January 5. The class meets on Tuesdays from 7-9:30 p.m., initially meeting by Zoom and transitioning to the Lanier House once it is safe to do so. For more information and registration procedures, contact Rick Tyler, 404-375-6470, or Deirdra Glover, 770-865-2141.

SPIRITUALITY ADVENT SPIRITUALITY OFFERING We invite you to join us for an introduction to Centering Prayer Workshop offered by Contemplative Outreach of Atlanta. As many of you know, Centering Prayer is a simple method prayer rooted in ancient Christian tradition. Many of us have found the practice to be transformative, deepening our understanding of scripture and widening our perspective on our relationships with God and others. The gathering will be by Zoom at 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 5. It is being sponsored by St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and is free of charge. You can register at www. stlukesatlanta.org/blog/centering-prayer/. The workshop will be based on the book Open Mind, Open Heart by Thomas Keating. You may purchase the book through the Cathedral Book Store. We will not be offering an Advent Quiet Day at the Cathedral this year because of the restrictions that have been placed on in person gatherings and our perceptions of the limits of formatting contemplative offerings online. We do hope that what you learn in the workshop will prove helpful to your spiritual life and what we are able to do with in person quiet days in the future. Please call Canon George Maxwell if you have any questions.
OUTREACH HABITAT CHRISTMAS BASKETS We will be doing Habitat Christmas baskets again and this year will be more important than ever for our homeowners. The processes will look a little different in order that we can do this safely for all. Most importantly, we are still going to need volunteers to make items to fill our baskets and be part of delivery. Mark your calendars for Habitat for Humanity basket contributions on December 11 and delivery on December 12. We are going to need baked goods, cookies, nuts, and fruit. Kids can also make cards and decorations to be included. Sign up at www.cathedralATL.org/habitatbaskets, and contact John Champion at jchampion@bellsouth.net or 404 307-0817 if you have questions.
EMMAUS HOUSE TOY DRIVE The holiday season has always been a special time at Emmaus House. For decades, parishes, friends, and organizations have donated gifts for more than 500 children in Peoplestown on Christmas Eve each year. Because of the pandemic this year, donated gifts cannot be safely collected, organized, and distributed. But we would like to assist families who need help providing presents to their children. To continue this ministry, we are asking for donations of $25 gift cards from Target, Walmart or Visa, which we will distribute to families with children in the Emmaus House community. The deadline to give is December 1. There are two ways for you to make your donation: directly to Emmaus House at www.emmaushouse.org/ donate or via the Cathedral at www.cathedralATL.org/toydrive.
