The CATHEDRAL TIMES The weekly newsletter of the Cathedral of St. Philip · Serving Atlanta and the World · November 1, 2020

HELLO, SAINTS! By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral Did you know you are mentioned in the Bible? It’s right there, in the first verse of Paul’s Epistle to the Philippians, “To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi.” That’s you! You are in the Cathedral of St. Philip; thus, in my way of reading it, you are in Philippi! You are the saints! Hey, do you have any plans for All Saints Day? I realize that’s not the usual question we ask around this time of year. We usually ask about the night before; do you have any plans for Halloween? And Halloween plans range from gatherings to parties to monitoring children. Great fun, and they will be this year, too, even with highly modified pandemic plans. But what about the day itself ? All Saints Day, November 1. It’s a Sunday this year, and I have an idea for us. I have an idea besides the one which you would expect me to make, that you should participate in one of the online, or in-person, events of the Cathedral! Of course I would say that! Here’s the brief summary of formal events (but my idea is next paragraph!). On All Saints Day morning, we will have our (now) usual outdoor services of koinonia, and our (now) usual online recorded services of Holy Eucharist. All that morning, we will be recognizing and honoring new saints who have been baptized recently! Later on Sunday afternoon, at 4:00, we will offer an online Evensong that remembers parishioners and our friends who have died in the past year. This is always a sweet and holy time. Help us remember! Finally, at 7:00 pm on All Saints Day, we offer our online Requiem Eucharist for the Homeless, usually a large and crowded event in the cathedral. But we are making it work this year online! Again, join us for that, too! But I have another All Saints Day idea. There is another practice we might adopt, which is not about going to a party, or a gathering, or praying online. What if, on All Saints Day, we were to greet every person we see that day, with the words, “Hello, Saint!” “Hello, Saint Sam!” “Hello, Saint John!” “Hello, Saint Mary! “Hello, Saint.” I urge you to try it. These days, maybe more than ever, we might benefit from recognizing each other as saints of God, as holy people of God. We are in the midst of travail and stress. We have been cooped up beyond measure, usually with those we love, yes, …but still. We need a break. And, in a week or so, we will have some sort of stressed reaction to the national elections, however they turn out. Many of us thought we had hit a wall about three months ago, then again last month, then again last week, and on and on. We have all faced so much loss in the last seven months; it is exhausting us. Thus, on All Saints Day, we need each other, we need the “Saints of God,” more than ever. Even the smallest powerful greeting, “You are a Saint!” can be a spiritual blessing to someone. In the Bible, the “saints” are not just the super-heroes, the extraordinary wonder-workers; the “saints” are the regular ordinary baptized people of God. Let’s bless each other with those words this All Saints Sunday, just as Saint Paul blessed so many of his congregations – from Rome (Romans 1:7) to Corinth (1 Corinthians 1:2 and 2 Corinthians 1:1) to Ephesus (Ephesians 1:1) to Philippi, and even to Atlanta today. He called all of them “saints.” You are a saint. I am a saint. We are made holy by the love and grace of God. Let’s call each other by that name, instead of any of the other labels floating around our world these days. Hello, Saints!

Cathedral ANTIQUES SHOW NORMAN ASKINS IS ANTIQUES SHOW'S HONORARY DESIGN CHAIR The 2021 Cathedral Antiques Show committee is honored to announce Norman Askins as our honorary design chair. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Mr. Askins holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Architectural History from the University of Virginia. He also attended a summer session at Parsons School of Design, New York City and the Attingham Park Summer School, England, where he studied the architecture and decorative arts of Great Britain. Following graduate school, Mr. Askins served four years as architect and architectural historian at The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation where he received in-depth training in early building technology and the philosophy of restoration. While at Williamsburg, Mr. Askins was fortunate to be assigned to a yearlong special project to redesign much of the interior of the Executive Office Wing of the White House (Cabinet Room, Vice President’s Office, etc.). Following two years in Atlanta with Heery and Heery Architects, Mr. Askins accepted a position in 1974 with John Milner Associates, West Chester, Pennsylvania, the nation’s largest and foremost preservation/restoration firm. As Director of Restoration, he oversaw a wide variety of preservation projects in the Eastern and Southern regions of the country. In the fall of 1977, Mr. Askins established his own practice in Atlanta, Georgia, specializing in historic preservation, restoration and residential design. The firm’s scope of services ranges from period residences to vacation cottages, plantations, and

innumerable additions to existing homes across the U.S., Ireland, and France. In addition to his professional career, Mr. Askins has served on various arts/preservation organizations: as chairman of Friends of the Decorative Arts at the High Museum, on the Board of Governors for Rhodes Hall, on the board of Cherokee Garden Library, and on the board of the Southern Architecture Foundation.

ADULT Education These classes gather on Zoom at 10:10 a.m. on Sunday. Go to cathedralATL.org/education for links.

OLD FASHIONED SUNDAY SCHOOL The Rev. Canon George Maxwell is taking a new look at what Jesus was doing on Maundy Thursday when he washed his disciples’ feet and shared supper with them. In her book, The Holy Thursday Revolution, the philosopher Beatrice Bruteau argues that Jesus was showing us a new way to think about ourselves and organize our society. We’re talking about how this evolution of thought offers us hope in the midst of increasing anxiety caused by the pandemic, social unrest, and election season.

Cathedral CHAPTER THE CATHEDRAL CHAPTER IS ACCEPTING CANDIDATES FOR NOMINATION TO THE CHAPTER The Chapter Nominating Committee has begun their work of assembling a slate of nominees for the 2021 Cathedral Chapter. They invite anyone in the parish to submit recommendations of qualified candidates. As the governing body of the Cathedral, the Chapter determines policy issues and provides stewardship of the Cathedral’s complex operations. Each month, the Chapter formally reviews the status of each of the Cathedral’s parochial entities and ministries, and oversees parish financial statements. Unlike smaller parishes, the Cathedral Chapter does not usually get involved in the day-to-day activities of the Cathedral. In our large and complex system, the Chapter of the Cathedral operates as a board of trustees or board of stewards. Each Chapter member serves a three-year term. Our Church By-laws allow for members to be: “Any communicant of the parish in good and regular standing, who is not less than eighteen years of age, a regular attendant in Cathedral worship in the year preceding election, and known by the treasurer to have made and maintained a stated financial commitment for church support in the year preceding election.” (A “communicant” is a baptized member who has been confirmed.) The most important quality of an effective Chapter member is an ability to see the larger picture.

Most have held leadership positions in more than one of the church’s ministries or parochial entities. After recommendations are given to the Nominating Committee, eligibility is verified and candidates are polled to confirm their interest and availability. The committee then chooses six strong candidates to send to the Chapter for approval. Finally, Chapter members are formally elected by the parish at the annual parish meeting in December. The Nominating Committee reviews candidates who will round out the experience of the continuing Chapter members. We will seek to represent a broad range of age and gender groups, and a broad range of ministries and parochial entities of the Cathedral community. Members of the committee include: Bryant Bateman, Janice Cook, Dorsey DeLong, Alexis Guilbert, Helen McSwain, and Brent Rosengren. The Dean and Senior Warden Del King serve ex-officio. Names of recommendations should be submitted along with a brief supporting statement to any Nominating Committee member or to the Office of the Dean, 404-365-1031, or jmahood@cathedralATL.org.

OUTREACH HABITAT CHRISTMAS BASKETS Great news! We will be doing Habitat Christmas baskets again, and this year will be more important than ever for our homeowners. The processes will look a little different in order that we can do this safely for all. Most importantly, we are still going to need volunteers to make items to fill our baskets and be part of delivery. We are going to need baked goods, cookies, nuts, and fruit. A SignUpGenius will be available in mid-November and we will be announcing that soon. In the meantime, mark your calendars for basket contributions and assembly on December 11 and delivery on December 12. If you think you'd like to be part of this, contact John Champion at jchampion@ bellsouth.net or 404 307-0817 and we will put you on the follow-up list.
