THE FEAST OF SAINT FRANCIS WILL STILL OCCUR AND WE WILL BLESS ANIMALS! By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral

For over twenty years, the Cathedral of St. Philip has celebrated the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi on the first Sunday in October. Even during this pandemic season of social distance, we intend to keep the feast!

Presently, the Cathedral offers Sunday Eucharist services only online, at 8:45 and 11:15 (and 10:30 Spanish), using pre-recorded portions of the service. We realize that people may be a bit tired of

watching screens, but our online services really are strong and inspiring; plus, we are using as many different members of our community as possible!

This Sunday, online, we will feature photographs of many, many, many pets and animals that

parishioners and friends have submitted! Our blessing of those animals will occur during the online services on the morning of October 4. Join us!

The Cathedral of St. Philip is also offering ways to gather in person, outdoors! For two weeks

now, we have assembled “Outdoor Services of Koinonia,” which are subject to strict conditions.

Those gatherings are limited to 50 people (and you must register every week, weekly, if you want to

attend the following Sunday!), the services cannot involve receiving communion or singing, and we must all wear masks. However, they have been glorious and intimate! It has been wonderful to see

familiar faces and friends! We are truly appreciating “spiritual community,” which is what the word “koinonia” means.

On this Sunday, October 4, we ask you NOT to bring animals or pets to the morning outdoor

services of koinonia. However, we are providing drive-through, and walk-through, opportunities to have your pets and animals blessed by the clergy of the Cathedral, between the hours of 1:00 p.m.

and 2:00 p.m. This Sunday, October 4, 1:00 through 2:00 p.m. Come wave to us! Come bless with us! Be safe. Stay in your car if you are driving; you may enter from Peachtree Road or Andrews

Drive, and the blessings will be divided among three locations at the end of each parking section.

Walk-through blessings will occur in the labyrinth, safely away from everyone else. We are blessed to have enough space for safe social distancing! Thanks be to God!

KEEP THE THRIFT HOUSE IN MIND

“GRIEF INTENSIVE” ONLINE SUPPORT GROUP

Most nonprofits have limited opportunities for your participation in these times, but you can still do God’s work by helping the Cathedral Thrift House. Many of you may be downsizing, simplifying, rearranging, Marie Kondo-ing. The Cathedral Thrift House would like to have that great “stuff ” that you may no longer have room to keep, or are just tired of looking at everyday. Please consider donating your unused, unwanted but wonderful items where they can be instruments for good here in the Atlanta community. We donate 100% of our profits to local Atlanta charities. Due to space limitations in our store, please call Nellie Holleman at 404-876-5440 if you have large items to donate. Thank you very much for your many years of support and donations. P.S. The Cathedral Thrift House is also a great place for you to shop. Look us up on Google and scroll to the bottom of the listing to see our featured goodies. You never know what you will find at the Thrift House, so come by to see us.

Hospice Atlanta Bereavement Services, one of the Cathedral’s partner organizations, has recently added a 6-week grief intensive for participants to focus on and work through key aspects of grief. The free grief intensive provides a unique, professionally-facilitated opportunity for participants deeply process specific areas of their grief experience, while connecting and sharing with others in a closed, structured, small-group setting. over six weeks For more information, or to register, contact Chandelle Carter, Chandelle.Carter@vnhs.org or 404-8693072.

CAMP STARS FAMILY BEREAVEMENT CAMP Hospice Atlanta’s Camp STARS, which is often hosted at the Cathedral, will take place online Friday–Sunday, November 6-8. Hospice Atlanta understands that death is an integral part of life. When someone dies, people grieve and may struggle to cope with life without their loved one. The virtual Camp STARS family bereavement camps are designed to help people understand they are not alone and that their feelings of loss are normal. It provides a HIPPA-safe, user-friendly, virtual camp environment, specifically designed for adults and children, grouped separately. For more information or to register, call 404-869-3086 or visit www.vnhs.org/hospice-atlanta/camp-stars.

ST. VERONICA’S GUILD CONTINUES WORK WITH LOCAL MINISTRIES The pandemic has not slowed down the sisters of St. Veronica Guild! We are busy helping our Ministries - The Church of the Common Ground, The Church of the Holy Comforter, Crossroads Ministries, and Emmaus House. We are aware more than ever that homelessness doesn’t go away and we need to care for our brothers and sisters in good times as well as bad. The toiletry drives that St. Veronica’s Guild manage help each of these organizations in their local context, and last spring’s book drive supported the Freedom School Summer Reading Program at Emmaus House. We are always ready to help our homeless and less fortunate friends. As you see, we haven’t allowed the pandemic to slow us down. Although our big fundraiser is in the early part of 2021, we always welcome donations of any amount to St. Veronica’s Guild at cathedralATL.org/contribute.
