As the Cathedral of St. Philip prepares to honor our youth this Sunday, May 17, we particularly send special blessings to all students who are graduating this spring. Wow, what a graduation season this is. We have all lost things during this pandemic. Our seniors, however, those graduating from high school and college (and other levels!) are having a particularly strange time: no big ceremonies, no special events, no proms, no baccalaureates, no big gatherings of any kind, no final times with special friends and colleagues.

So, we bless you seniors! Congratulations on your excellent student careers! May you begin the next chapters of your lives with amazing grace and patience, and with the strength that comes through perseverance and the ability to adapt to changing situations. And congratulations to your families, too!

PASTORAL Care RECLAIMING AUTHENTICITY IN A VIRTUAL CLIMATE In the midst of this pandemic and its collateral consequences, we are facing many losses, while being hurled into trying new things. How do we stay centered? To what can we hold onto?

How can we live in these moments with more conviction and confidence, and stay true to ourselves and our relationships with others? Over the course of these three weeks, we will be using psychological and theological perspectives to reflect on the challenges, opportunities, and resources we have to navigate our current climate. Canon Cathy Zappa and therapist Christy Gituku, from the Cathedral Counseling Center, are leading this discussion. We will meet by Zoom at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays, May 19, May 26, and June 2. CONGREGATIONAL Life WORD TO YOUR MOTHER TALKS ABOUT PRIVILEGE W2YM is a group of busy, busy moms who gather to discuss secular and religious books throughout the year. Our next read is Amy Julia Becker’s White Picket Fences: Turning Towards Love in a World Divided

by Privilege, which we’ll discuss the evening of Tuesday, June 16. The book is available at cathedralbookstore.org. Becker writes: “I have been given much that I do not deserve, and my very real social privilege has cut me off from others as much as it has also made my life comfortable. But social privilege is not the end of my story. DONATE TO THE THRIFT HOUSE Good news! The Cathedral Thrift House is now open exclusively to receive donations. Donations will be accepted only between the hours of 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The reduced hours and days are to ensure that we have staff available. Please bring your donations to the rear door of the store. Please note that because of limited space and personnel, we will not be able to accept electronics; children’s clothing; or anything that is ripped, torn, stained, or broken until further notice. OLD FASHIONED Sunday School PENTECOST IS COMING! HELP US CELEBRATE! Our celebration of Pentecost begins as did Palm Sunday, and the Easter Vigil, and every Sunday service: with a procession! The Feast of Pentecost falls on the 50th day after Easter and, with Easter Day itself, bookends the season of Easter. On Pentecost Sunday, May 31, we remember and celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and its inspiration of the church, as we renew our own baptismal vows—just like we did on Easter Day. We hear the story from the Acts of the Apostles, when the Holy Spirit descends on the crowd of disciples in tongues of fire, and people from all nations understand each other, though they speak in their own languages. At the Feast of Pentecost, you will see lots of red, as red is the color associated with the Holy Spirit and, of course, with fire; and you will hear the Word of the Lord proclaimed in many languages.

This Pentecost Sunday, we will still process together, with all the fanfare of our usual Pentecost celebration!

Our procession will consist of pictures and short videos from you, the Cathedral parish, with fire or anything that reminds you of fire. You can hold a flame in your hand, build a fire, or make something that looks like fire. You also can carry streamers or banners, or anything festive. Let the Spirit guide you! It will be lively and chaotic, just like the first Pentecost!

ANTIQUES SHOW BENEFICIARY TO PRESENT AT OFSS This Sunday, May 17, at 10:10 a.m. the Cathedral Antiques Show welcomes representatives from next year’s beneficiary, City of Refuge, to talk about their mission and impact at Old Fashioned Sunday School.

City of Refuge was founded by Bruce Deel in 1997 with a mission to transform the lives of individuals and communities in Atlanta and beyond. The faith-based nonprofit is housed in a 210,000-square-foot warehouse on the Westside in the 30314 zip code: a neighborhood where 60% of murders in Atlanta happen and nearly 40% of the residents live below the federal poverty line. The grant received from the 2021 Cathedral Antiques Show will go toward renovating the 180 Degree Kitchen, a fully operational culinary environment where meals are prepped and served three times a day, 365 days a year.
