THANK YOU – PART TWO! FOR EASTER! By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral Last week, during Holy Week, my word to the parish, and to the wider community of the people of God, was simply “Thank you!” In the midst of challenging times, “Thank You” is contagious! Thanks to all of you for your patience and grace, and energy! This week, following our Easter Day together, my word is the same: “THANK YOU, PART TWO!” Yes, this Easter Week, I deliver a second part of thanks. I thank God for this incredibly skilled parish, and for this incredibly patient parish. You participated in our liturgies and prayers with energy and creativity! You helped us observe the solemnity of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, and you rejoiced with us on Easter Day. Thanks to Lauren Holder for celebrating Eucharist with us in such a dear and tender way in the Maundy Thursday service! Thank you to George Maxwell for his sermon’s wise words. Our Good Friday liturgy presented prayer and veneration in a beautiful way. In my sermon, I tried to join the depth of Good Friday with the depth of Resurrection; I titled it, “The Good Friday Resurrection Starts Inside Us.” Then, on Easter Day itself, our phenomenal community prayed ALL the beautiful elements of the Easter service: The Lighting of New Fire and the Paschal Candle, The Vigil Readings, The Blessing of Water and Renewal of our Baptismal Covenant, and then Cathy Zappa helping us celebrate the first Eucharist of Easter. It was a tremendous Easter Vigil and Eucharist! Your contributed photographs of fire and candles and water and blossoms were beautiful! You can find video recordings of all these services on the Cathedral website! Thank you, thank you, thank you, especially to Brant McCaskill and Dan Murphy for their energy and time in helping to assemble all those video components! And thank you, thank you, thank you, to each of YOU, for being with us, even in social distance. We were separate from each on Easter Day, but we were united in Spirit. We were many members, but we were One Body. And, we still are One Body. Thank you! Thank you for being with us. Thank you for being the Body of Christ!

This letter is part of a series of fictional letters by Canon George Maxwell intended for Episcopalians young and old who wonder what it means to be faithful in the world today. Dear Anna, I’m glad to hear that Bryce is feeling better. And, yes, I’m happy to help you discern how you might like to approach your spiritual life. I believe that being human is a journey of becoming. We are, as the creation story of Genesis tells us, born in the image of God and, as early Christian writers interpreted that story, our task in life is to grow into the likeness of God. This journey is often described as moving from death to life, or from captivity to freedom, or from blindness to sight. I prefer to talk about it as moving from being asleep to being awake. We wake up just naturally to some extent as we go through life. We learn how to love and find meaning and endure suffering. There is another level of awareness, though, that takes a different kind of work.

This part of waking up depends upon our learning how to develop attitudes of openness and trust and surrender. Now, when I say surrender, I don’t mean giving up and passively accepting whatever comes our way. I mean standing firm and actively staying in the flow of life that we can’t control. I think George Lucas got it right in the first Star Wars movie when Yoda tells Luke that he must “feel the force” around him, the force “between you, me, the tree.” All of this takes effort, of course. But, in the end, it’s not something that we can make happen. It’s something we have to discover through our own experience. I sense that you are conscious of a level of life different from the one on which you are living and I would welcome the chance to share with you what I know. The path you choose, of course, must ultimately be your own. Your affectionate uncle, Ames

Cathedral ANTIQUES SHOW CATHEDRAL ANTIQUES SHOW CELEBRATES 50 YEARS! The Cathedral Antiques Show is proud to announce the celebration of 50 years of Antiques, Art, Interior and Floral Design, and givingback to our community. Come celebrate with us January 20-24, 2021. We are pleased to announce our 2021 Beneficiary: City of Refuge. The proceeds will go toward renovating the 180 Degree Kitchen, a fully operational culinary environment where meals are prepped and served three times a day, 365 days a year. Originally installed by a CAS grant in 2008, more than two million meals have been served from the 180 Degree Kitchen. The Cathedral Antiques Show is a major outreach project of the Episcopal Church Women. We will again host the best dealers from around the Southeast, featuring antiques, art dealers, floral and interior designers as well as the Cathedral Tour of Homes and a Young Collector’s Tour. Each year we honor people in our community that have made an impact: Our 2021 Honorary Chairmen are Sam and Boog Candler, and our Honorary Design/Architectural Chairman is Norman D. Askins. Over the years, the show has contributed over $5.4 million to Atlanta area non-profit organizations, and all net proceeds benefit the charity. For more information visit: cathedralantiques.org

OUTREACH OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES Sheltering Arms is working hard to get disposable diapers, formula, and other essentials to families in need, and they’ve asked us to help. If you’d like to donate diapers for Sheltering Arms to distribute, you can do so on their diaper drive Amazon wish list.

Intown Ministries is no longer able to purchase food in bulk quantities to help ensure our food insecure neighbors are getting the nutrition they need. In addition to asking for food donations, Intown is asking for volunteer shoppers! A volunteer shopper would pick up as much food as they are allowed to purchase, pay for the food, and then bring the receipt for immediate reimbursement. Contact Canon Lauren Holder, lholder@cathedralATL.org or 404-365-1036, for more information.
