FUN AND FROLIC: CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY AND MISSION By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral What fun! The Cathedral Thrift House Follies (The Fashion Show Follies) returned last week, and they were a frivolous and beneficial success. Thank you to everyone (especially Mary Bondurant) who made that “early Mardi Gras” evening work. We dressed up, we danced, we sang, we paraded, we joked, we enjoyed each other! Why do we organize events which allow us to act crazy? I am always fascinated with how Mardi Gras gives us the occasion to act just as crazy, or crazier, than Halloween. Actually, I believe they are similar holidays. We dress up weirdly for both. We seem to let our inhibitions go. Of course, if you don’t know by now, let me remind you: Sometimes it is NOT good to let your inhibitions go! It is good to have boundaries, those created by our family, our church, our culture. Sure, they can be stifling sometimes, but they are usually helpful. Still, something inside us also wants to push those boundaries, to test them, if you will. And so, on Halloween, we dress in costumes that often reveal some of what is inside us. When I was a child dressing as a “hobo,” I thought to myself how fun and adventurous that might be. Is that why we later dress as Darth Vader or as Obi Wan Kenobi or as a witch?! Dressing as our Dark Side can often give that part of us allowable space, so that it does not sneak up and surprise us during our regular life. Mardi Gras is the same. We know we are supposed to be disciplined and sober and somber in Lent, so we let it all go on the Tuesday before (or the week before, or the month before). So we did, last Thursday. Thanks be to the Thrift House board and volunteers who helped organize another “Fashion Show” of follies and delight. We played piano. We paraded. We joked. We laughed. It was exhilarating. I think I saw The Beatles there. Was that Yoko? It was a clever and distinctive way to observe Mardi Gras. Thank you! And the financial proceeds went to a great cause! An organization called Kidz2Leaders. Their mission is “to provide stability, opportunity and a Christian community for children of inmates to break the cycle of incarceration.” They are a strong group. Here was my favorite part of the evening, an evening full of favorites. As I was leaving, after most people had left, and as housekeepers and sextons were beginning their usual fantastic job of cleaning and re-arranging, someone approached me. She said she had something to say. I had no idea whether her comment was going to be positive or negative. “Before tonight, I did not even know the beneficiary of tonight’s event,” she said, softly. “I just want you to know,” she said, “that this is the organization that saved one of my children. She would not be where she was without it. And my other child, at seventeen years old, is now working with that organization. Thank you so much for supporting this ministry.” Wow. That conversation right there was the delightful blessing of the evening. When the church is having fun, while also being real, and also helping the world, we have to be doing things well. That is what I call Christian community. Christian community is not just simplistic and easy frivolity together; it is revealing, disclosing community, something that reveals part of who we are. When we do that, we help the world; and when we do that, we end up supporting organizations like Kidz2Leaders. Thank you! Blessed Lent to you all!

LIVING UNDER ABRAHAM’S TENT On Sunday, March 15, Dean Sam Candler welcomes the Rev. Canon Paul-Gordon Chandler, founding president of CARAVAN, an international peacebuilding non-profit that uses the arts to build sustainable peace around the world. Canon Chandler will preach at 8:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. and teach at the Dean’s Forum in Child Hall at 10:10 a.m.. “Living Under Abraham’s Tent” is an illustrated presentation that focuses on what we can learn from Abraham's story about living together more harmoniously. What can Abraham teach us today toward freeing our world from sectarian strife? The presentation builds on CARAVAN’s peacebuilding exhibition titled “ABRAHAM: Out of One, Many,” featuring artwork by three celebrated Middle Eastern contemporary artists from the faith traditions of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism that interpret Abraham’s life and faith journey for us today, serving as a guide toward creating cultures of peace, harmony, justice and healing – as descendants of a shared heritage. This exhibit will be on display in the Atrium, beginning with a reception that evening, March 15, at 5:30 p.m.

lent
at the cathedral adults
Following dinner on Wednesday nights during the season of Lent, adults will gather for a discussion about the language of faith. It is often said that learning to be a Christian is like learning a language. We use words to make sense of and tell others about our experiences of the presence of God. But, it is becoming harder and harder to maintain our fluency. Secular culture doesn’t really support Christian speech or Christian ways of thinking about the world. So, as we prepare for the mystery of Easter, we have asked several Christian speakers to take a word or a phrase common to the Christian language, tell us about how they understand it, and give us an example (a witness) of how their understanding makes a difference in their lives. We look forward to seeing you there.
young professionals Our Young Professionals Bible Study will meet at 6:30 p.m. in Walthour Library, upstairs in the Atrium.
wednesday nights march 4 – april 8 dinner 5:30 pm program 6:15 pm children Lent is a season that gives us the time to reflect, consider, and rediscover our need for love and mercy the rest of the year. In our children's program for Lent, our children will see that the more we learn about Jesus, the more we discover who we are, too. Sometimes there is a gap between who we think we are and how God sees us. Let’s help our children jump into this season and get to know God, who created all things, redeems all things, including us. Using the StoryMakers curriculum, we will open our imaginations and place ourselves in the story, allowing our minds to move beyond what we see in front of us. Sounds a lot like faith, doesn’t it? Our goal for this series is to allow the imaginations of children to become the unique entry point into the season of Lent.

Farmers MARKET THE CATHEDRAL FARMERS MARKET HAS A NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR We are pleased to announce that Nancy Qarmout has been chosen as the new executive director of the Cathedral Farmers Market. Sara Craig-Goodell, who has been with the Market for the last seven years, serving as executive director for the last two, told us at the end of last season that she would be leaving the market to pursue other interests. Sara has graciously made herself available to assist Nancy in the transition. Nancy is new to us, but not to farmers markets. She founded the Tucker Farmers Market, which is now in its eighth season. Beyond the Tucker market, Nancy has also been an active participant with the Georgia Farmers Market Association and served as market manager for the Norcross Community Market. Nancy commented, “I am passionate about bringing people together and fostering relationships in and among communities and individuals. This passion has enabled me to develop connections between vendors, community organizations, and customers that stabilize the market and generate visibility.” We look forward to welcoming back our vendors, volunteers, and customers for the 2020 season. Join us on March 7 for opening day as we begin the next chapter for Market! —Canon George Maxwell, Vicar
