ROB RADTKE TO PREACH AND SPEAK Next Sunday, January 26, Dean Sam Candler welcomes Dr. Rob Radtke, president and CEO of Episcopal Relief & Development, to preach and speak about the organization. For over 75 years, Episcopal Relief & Development has been working together with supporters and partners for lasting change around the world. Each year the organization facilitates healthier, more fulfilling lives for more than three million people struggling with hunger, poverty, disaster and disease.

Inspired by Jesus’ words in Matthew 25, Episcopal Relief & Development leverages the expertise and resources of Anglican and other partners to deliver measurable and sustainable change in three signature program areas: women, children, and climate. Dr. Radtke will preach at the 7:45 a.m., 8:45 a.m., and 11:15 a.m. services, and speak in Child Hall at 10:10 a.m.

This term, we will continue our study of the Bible and Christian contemplative spirituality. The course is built on the foundation laid by the Rev. Vincent Pizzuto, Episcopal priest and college professor, in his book titled Contemplating Christ: The Gospels and the Interior Life (Liturgical Press, 2018), which is, of course, available in the Cathedral Book Store. We will also explore a number of related themes that emerge from what is sometimes called the wisdom tradition.

Canon George Maxwell leads this class. As always, you will find those things that we think matter most: a light heart, a broad welcome, and good coffee. We look forward to seeing you there.

OUR TRUE SELVES Room 240 The Rev. Dr. Thee Smith leads this series of co-listening classes that aim to enhance our ability to be fully ourselves—our true, worthy, and estimable selves. Topics can include everyday experiences and range through tough political issues as well as lifestyle choices and faith matters.

Though we Christians claim to worship the one true God, revealed in Jesus Christ, many of us feel beholden to other powerful forces in our lives, and may even treat them as a religion or source of self-justification. Join Canons Cathy Zappa and Lauren Holder as we explore the many forms that religiosity takes today—or the many things that we tend to approach as religion. We will be using as our conversation partner David Zahl’s book, Seculosity: How Career, Parenting, Technology, Food, Politics, and Romance Became Our New Religion And What To Do About It. David will be our guest speaker at Kanuga Parish Weekend in May! So join this five-week conversation now!

HONORARY DESIGN CHAIR JOHN BANKS The Cathedral Antiques Show is pleased to announce this year’s honorary design chair is John S. Banks. Since 1987 when he formed John S. Banks Interiors, Inc., John Banks has offered patrons individual attentive service and extraordinary talent. His three decades of design experience have provided John the background and skills necessary to interpret each client’s personal image, preferences, and requirements.

HONORARY CHAIR ANNE WILLINGHAM The Cathedral Antiques Show is very pleased and privileged to have Anne Willingham as the honorary chair of the 2020 show.

An engaged and dedicated Cathedral member for 56 years, Anne has worked tirelessly with the Cathedral Antiques Show Committee in many different capacities over several years. In addition to the many hours of her time given to the show, she has also been active in other ministries of St. Philip’s, including volunteering on the information desk since 2005, helping cook and serve dinner every first Sunday night at the Peachtree-Pine Shelter, and as a member of the St. Nicholas Guild.

MUSIKGARTEN ALLEGRO MUSIC CLASSES FOR CHILDREN THROUGH AGE 8 If you want a fun, structured activity for your child that is as educational as it is fun, Allegro is for you! Movement and music activities are perfect for child development.

Music immerses the child in language, evokes movement, stimulates the brain, and fosters physical coordination – all in a group setting that builds community. Using Musikgarten’s internationally recognized curricula for infants through second graders, Brenda Pruitt teaches our Allegro classes, which offer children a joyful setting for mental, emotional, physical, spiritual and social growth.

All classes cost $100 for the first child, $70 for each additional child in the same class, except for Allegro Choir ($75 for all).

Each class will be between 5 and 12 children.

Three class options for babies and toddlers: • Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday: 11:15 – 11:45 a.m.

For ages 3-5: • Tuesday: 1 – 1:45 p.m.

ORGAN RECITAL THIS SUNDAY This Sunday, January 19 at 3:15 p.m., we welcome Anthony Williams as our organ recitalist. A graduate of University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, the University of Michigan, and the American Conservatory of Music, Williams currently serves as associate professor of music and university organist at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. His program will include works by Craig Phillips, Mark Fax, Franck, and Vierne. We encourage everyone to come and hear this very talented performer.

SPIRITUALITY WOMEN’S LENTEN RETREAT: ALTARS AND ALTERED Cathedral women, along with women friends or relatives, are invited to attend our annual Lenten Retreat, March 13-15 at St. Mary’s Sewanee in Tennessee. As we weather transformations in our lives, it is important to remember and revisit our sacred core with intention. This weekend we will explore altars. What are they for? How do they ground us? What can they look like? And we will build altars—sacred spaces to visit within ourselves and outside ourselves. In the beautiful setting of St. Mary’s Sewanee, there will be plenty of time to rest, play, enjoy the outdoors, and be in fellowship with God and one another.

The retreat will be led by the Rev. Lauren Holder, Canon for Community and Education. Costs for the weekend, which cover lodging and meals, are $285 (private room) or $225 per person (shared/double room). The deadline for registration and payment is February 10. OUTREACH THE CAMELS ARE HERE! The visit of the Epiphany camels comes to an end this Sunday, January 19.

They arrived several weeks ago to collect your donations of personal are items for four Atlanta ministries St. Veronica’s Guild supports. As the Wise Men on their camels brought gifts for the Christ Child, follow the camels and bring your gifts of new, unopened individual and family size items. Your gifts will help low income women, men, and children served by Emmaus House, Crossroads Community Ministries, Holy Comforter Church Friendship Center, and Church of the Common Ground. The wise women of St. Veronica’s Guild welcome all unopened personal care items you get when you travel or shop this holiday season. MYTHS AMERICA LIVES BY: A DIALOGUE ON WHITE SUPREMACY with Dr. Richard T. Hughes and the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith White supremacy has been defined as the belief, theory, or doctrine that white people are inherently superior to people from all other racial and ethnic groups, especially black people, and are therefore rightfully the dominant group in any society. As people of faith, we challenge this belief because it runs counter to Jesus' life and message. However, we may not be fully aware of the influence of this belief in our churches, country, and history.

Please come on Saturday, February 1 for what promises to be a scintillating and thought-provoking dialogue followed by group conversation, taking place from 10 a.m. – noon in Child Hall. The point of departure will be Myths America Lives By: White Supremacy and the Stories that Give Us Meaning, the path-breaking work by Richard T. Hughes PhD, scholar-in-residence in the College of Bible and Ministry at Lipscomb University. Dr. Hughes will be joined by the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith. The two will be discussing this well-researched and documented examination of white supremacy, the synergistic relationships of white supremacy with five myths that have been central to the evolution of the American psyche, and the implications for our culture and lives today.

SPIRITUALITY TAIZÉ PRAYER Come to Taizé Prayer at 8 p.m. on Monday, January 20 in Mikell Chapel to remember the life and ministry of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to pray for continued racial healing. Originating in Taizé, France, this simple service of scripture, music and candlelight will bring a beautiful and prayerful close to your Monday. The Indoor Labyrinth will not be available before Taizé this month, but will resume on the third Monday of February (and continue on Sunday afternoons).
