HAVE YOU CHANGED YOUR MIND YET THIS YEAR? By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral
The popular verse, Luke 2:52, says that “Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favor.” It’s a verse we typically associate with the growth of the young boy, Jesus. But we pray it often for any of our young children: may they increase in wisdom and in maturity, and in divine and human grace! I tend to prefer the word “grace” over “favor.” The Greek of Luke 2:52 definitely says “charis.” Jesus increased in “charis,” or grace. Consider, however, what we are saying when we claim that Jesus increased in something. How can that be? Don’t we consider the divinity of Jesus to mean that he must already be divinely perfect? Why would he need to increase in anything at all? Well, I have come to believe that both the divinity and the humanity of Jesus include growth and increase. A whole and healthy person is always growing, and Jesus’ humanity shows that to us. If Jesus grows in wisdom and in life, then surely we are supposed to grow in wisdom and in life, too. We are not supposed to stand still. In fact, the most important indication that you are alive is that you are growing. In the biological world, the only things not growing are dead! What, then, in this new year are you doing to grow? Taking piano lessons for the first time? Reading a new book? Learning healthier foods to eat? Learning a new piece of history? Building something in your workshop? Or, better yet, teaching some new subject to a child? (For, remember, the best way to learn something is to teach it to someone.) Maybe you are even growing in wisdom. Learning new ideas and new perspectives can actually change your mind. One of the most important indications of wisdom is the ability to change your mind! That’s why John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching repentance, and it is why Jesus began his ministry with the same emphasis on repentance. The word “repent” means, literally, to “change one’s mind.” People who know how to repent know how to change their minds. In the Bible, repenting – or changing one’s mind – is not a sign of weakness, by any means. It is a sign of strength. And it is certainly a sign of wisdom. To change our minds means we are growing. And growing means we are staying alive! Some of our New Year’s resolutions might well coincide (coincidentally!) with the appearance again of John the Baptist this January, when we keep the feast of the Baptism of Christ ( January 12). Repent! Said John the Baptist. Change your mind, say our New Year’s resolutions! Changing our minds means we are growing, and growing in grace. And, growing in “divine and human grace” means we are staying alive!

OLD FASHIONED SUNDAY SCHOOL Beginning January 19 Child Hall Experiencing the Presence of God This term, we will continue our study of the Bible and Christian contemplative spirituality. The course is built on the foundation laid
by the Rev. Vincent Pizzuto, Episcopal priest and college professor, in his book titled Contemplating Christ: The Gospels and the Interior Life (Liturgical Press, 2018), which is, of course, available in the Cathedral Book Store. We will also explore a number of related themes that emerge from what is sometimes called the wisdom tradition. Canon George Maxwell leads this class. As always, you will find those things that we think matter most: a light heart, a broad welcome, and good coffee. We look forward to seeing you there.

Beginning January 26 Room 120 Though we Christians claim to worship the one true God, revealed in Jesus Christ, many of us feel beholden to other powerful forces in our lives, and may even treat them as a religion or source of self-justification. Join Canons Cathy Zappa and Lauren Holder as we explore the many forms that religiosity takes today—or the many things that we tend to approach as religion, including parenting. We will be using as our conversation partner David Zahl’s book, Seculosity: How Career, Parenting, Technology, Food, Politics, and Romance Became Our New Religion And What To Do About It. David will be our guest speaker at Kanuga Parish Weekend in May! So join this five-week conversation (and register for Kanuga) now!

SPIRITUALITY WOMEN’S LENTEN RETREAT: ALTARS AND ALTERED Cathedral women, along with women friends or relatives, are invited to attend our annual Lenten Retreat, March 13-15 at St. Mary’s Sewanee in Tennessee. As we weather transformations in our lives, it is important to remember and revisit our sacred core with intention. This weekend we will explore altars. What are they for? How do they ground us? What can they look like? And we will build altars—sacred spaces to visit within ourselves and outside ourselves. In the beautiful setting of St. Mary’s Sewanee, there will be plenty of time to rest, play, enjoy the outdoors, and be in fellowship with God and one another. The retreat will be led by the Rev. Lauren Holder, Canon for Community and Education. Costs for the weekend, which cover lodging and meals, are $285 (private room) or $225 per person (shared/double room). The deadline for registration and payment is February 10. Please contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@ cathedralatl.org or 404-365-1031, for further information. MOVING IN THE SPIRIT We're proud to partner with Moving in the Spirit, the Cathedral Antiques Show's 2020 beneficiary. Founded in 1986, Moving in the Spirit was the hopeful vision of Dana Lupton and Leah Mann, who believed they could unite their love for dance with their commitment to social justice. They were soon joined by Genene Stewart, who brought her heart for social justice, as well as her extensive dance and business expertise, to the small, but mighty, team. Together, they turned Moving in the Spirit into the organization it is today. What began as a dance class for a small group of girls at Stewart Avenue Shelter has now blossomed into a large and diverse organization that reaches over 250 children every week across Atlanta. Moving in the Spirit is an award-winning creative youth development program that uses dance to teach young people the social, emotional, and cognitive skills they need to thrive. Ultimately, students graduate from Moving in the Spirit as confident, resilient, compassionate leaders, poised to succeed beyond the stage and make a difference in their own communities.

Race and HEALING POTLUCK DINNER AND DISCUSSION Bring some food to share for a dinner and facilitated discussion of the 2019 Pulitzer Prize finalist in fiction, There There by Tommy Orange, Sunday, January 12, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Lanier House. From the Amazon Book Review: “What does it really mean to be an Indian/Native American/American Indian/Native? Orange’s vivid debut novel allows a unique cast—ranging from teenagers to elders—to pull this question apart even as they add a modern layer of complexity: They live in the urban landscape of Oakland, California... and intersect at the Big Oakland Powwow, with chaotic results”. All are welcome, even if you didn’t read the book (but it’s actually a very quick read!). Mark your calendar and visit the Cathedral Book Store for your copy. The evening will consist of a structured conversation over a shared meal as we express our faith by learning more about our neighbor. A reservation is required. Contact Jeannie Mahood with any questions and RSVP before January 6: jmahood@cathedralATL.org or 404-365-1031.To subscribe to occasional emails about Race and Healing events, visit cathedralATL.org/raceandhealing.
MYTHS AMERICA LIVES BY: A DIALOGUE ON WHITE SUPREMACY with Dr. Richard T. Hughes and the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith White supremacy has been defined as the belief, theory, or doctrine that white people are inherently superior to people from all other racial and ethnic groups, especially black people, and are therefore rightfully the dominant group in any society. As people of faith, we challenge this belief because it runs counter to Jesus' life and message. However, we may not be fully aware of the influence of this belief in our churches, country, and history. Please come on Saturday, February 1 for what promises to be a scintillating and thought-provoking dialogue followed by group conversation, taking place from 10 a.m. – noon in Child Hall. The point of departure will be Myths America Lives By: White Supremacy and the Stories that Give Us Meaning, the path-breaking work by Richard T. Hughes PhD, scholar-in-residence in the College of Bible and Ministry at Lipscomb University. Dr. Hughes will be joined by the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith. The two will be discussing this well-researched and documented examination of white supremacy, the synergistic relationships of white supremacy with five myths that have been central to the evolution of the American psyche, and the implications for our culture and lives today. Please RSVP to Jeannie Mahood, 404-365-1031 or jmahood@ cathedralATL.org.
