CHRISTMAS DÉCOR AT THE CATHEDRAL

The Cathedral Flower Guild takes great pleasure each Christmas in interpreting the joy of Christ’s birth through abundant flowers and greenery. This year’s Christmas decor will have an historic look, inspired by the fruited wreaths and lush greenery swags of Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.

Thousands of visitors come to admire the all-natural arrangements of boxwood, pineapples, citrus fruit, and apples that adorn houses and shops throughout the restored 18th century town each December. The colonists purportedly decorated with materials readily available to them, rather than use “exotic” touches like ribbon or poinsettias. The long-held belief is that they borrowed from nearby fields and waterways to gather native materials like oyster shells, cotton bolls, and dried okra pods to complement the vibrant colors of the fruit.

However, those lush, della Robbia style fruit arrangements did not make their first appearance in Williamsburg until the 1930s, at the height of the Colonial Revival period. Colonial Williamsburg’s townsfolk observed Christmas at Bruton Parish Church, which was simply greened with pine boughs. Little or no greenery dressed their homes; imported delicacies like pineapples and citrus fruit would have been too prized to be used as outdoor decoration.

The Flower Guild will dress up the natural Williamsburg look with a few traditional Cathedral favorites. Sparkling Christmas trees and bright red flowers will accompany the fruit arrangements. As we rejoice in the newborn Savior, we will be reminded of God’s great bounty. A blessed Christmas to all!

HISPANIC Ministry LA POSADA The celebration of the Posada has been a tradition in Mexico for 400 years. Many Mexican holidays include dramatizations of original events, a tradition which has its roots in the ritual of Bible plays used to teach religious doctrine to a largely illiterate population in Europe as early as the 10th and 11th centuries.

The Posada is a novena, a service of nine consecutive evenings leading up to Christmas to celebrate the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem and not finding lodging. The tradition is for two groups of people singing responsively on either side of the door in the church or at someone’s home. One group, playing Mary and Joseph, asks for “Posada,” or a place to stay each day. Once the innkeepers let them in, the Mary and Joseph group come into the home or church and kneel around the Nativity scene to pray. Latin American countries have continued to celebrate this holiday to this day, with very few changes to the tradition. The people asking for posada travel to 1 house each night for 9 nights.

The Posada is typically celebrated with prayers, several songs, and then food and piñatas. It is very much a family oriented event of the expectation of the Christ.

It is a celebration of great joy. At the Cathedral, we will celebrate a single night of the Posada on Saturday, December 21 at 6 p.m. in Child Hall. All are welcome!

Christmas Lessons & Carols

Sunday, December 22 – 4 p.m.

On Sunday, December 22 at 4 p.m., the Cathedral Schola will lead the Cathedral’s annual Festival of Nine Christmas Lessons and Carols. Biblical readings narrating the prophecy and birth of Jesus are illuminated by congregational carols and choral music of the Christmas season. Our festival is modeled on the famous worship service at King’s College, Cambridge, which has become popular worldwide since World War II through annual radio broadcasts on Christmas Eve. Whether you best sense the Eternal through beautiful choral music or popular carols sung by all, this service holds something for everyone.
