CHANGING HANDS By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral A lot of things change hands during the month of December! Gifts are changing hands! From person to person, and house to house. Friends and family deliver gifts and

treats, to celebrate the season, and to celebrate love. Many organizations change hands, too. It’s the end of the year, and new board members are elected. New staff people are hired and appointed.

In the retail business, much money changes hands, too! There is a lot of variation, but some say they receive as much as 50% of their retail revenue during the last quarter of every year. My friends in law firms say the same thing. Law firms are busy gathering their accounts receivable during this very transactional month.

Oh my, illnesses are also changing hands this month! Various colds and allergies jump from household to

household! ( Just remember, when you worry about catching infections from friends and family this season: love is also infectious! We catch love from each other more easily than we catch diseases!)

Here at the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip, I am glad to be part of all that hand-changing! We are in the business of spiritual interaction here, spiritual commerce, if you will. Our Christian community seeks to

inspire conversation, ministry, and love. Those kinds of things mean that we touch each other! We exchange gifts with each other!

Indeed, the very act of God becoming incarnate is a kind of interaction, a kind of spiritual commerce, a kind of changing hands. In the incarnation of Jesus Christ, God changes hands with humanity. God deigns to

become one of us. God interacts with us. God is not afraid to catch our illnesses and sicknesses. And God is not afraid to give us gifts. God is not afraid to catch our love.

I pray that every one of us in this grand Cathedral community has an experience of giving and receiving this season. To give, and to receive, within the context of Christian community, strengthens us. We love more when we are willing both to give, and to receive! Those exchanges create spiritual value.

Finally, of course, the Cathedral too – as a “spiritual corporation” – often receives much of our annual revenue in the last two months of every year. Every year, we have about one million dollars in yet-to-be-paid pledges from faithful parishioners. Parishioners are usually faithful, and I thank you for that! Still, however, it is a

big number. We need people to fulfill their pledges, and we need people to make new gifts, too! Every gift, pledged or not, is a way of participating in God’s gift to this world – his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for being willing to let your money change hands! From our hands, to the church’s hands, our gifts get to God’s hands. Then, God does amazing ministry through those changes of hands! Our exchanges create spiritual value. I hope we all have generous changes of hands this season! Thank you,

Bring some food to share for a dinner and facilitated discussion of the 2019 Pulitzer Prize Finalist in Fiction, There There by Tommy Orange, Sunday, January 12, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Lanier House. “What does it really mean to be an Indian/Native American/ American Indian/Native? Orange’s vivid debut novel allows a unique cast—ranging from teenagers to elders—to pull this question apart even as they add a modern layer of complexity: They live in the urban landscape of Oakland, California... and intersect at the Big Oakland Powwow, with chaotic results” (Amazon Book Review). Tommy Orange is faculty at the Institute of American Indian Arts MFA program. He is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. All are welcome, even if you didn’t read the book (but it’s actually a very quick read!). Mark your calendar and visit the Cathedral Book Store for your copy. The evening will consist of a structured conversation over a shared meal as we express our faith by learning more about our neighbor. A reservation is required. Contact Jeannie Mahood with any questions and please RSVP before January 6: jmahood@ cathedralATL.org or 404-365-1031. THE CAMELS ARE COMING

Come be part of the annual and joyful experience of Christmas baskets for our Cathedral Habitat families – we are building an amazing 24 this year and need your help! This has become a very popular event for us each year and you can help in any of several ways, including contributing food or monetary support, building baskets (beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 13), or delivering baskets (meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 14). This is something for kids and adults alike; make it a family event. Sign up in the Atrium, online at cathedralATL.org/ habitatbaskets, or contact John Champion at 404-307-0817 or jchampion@bellsouth.net for more details.

The Epiphany camels are coming to the Atrium January 5-12 to collect your donations of personal care items for the four Atlanta ministries St. Veronica’s Guild supports. As the Wise Men on their camels brought gifts for the Christ Child, follow the camels and bring your gifts of new, unopened individual and family size items. Your gifts will help low income women, men, and children served by Emmaus House, Crossroads Community Ministries, Holy Comforter Church Friendship Center, and Church of the Common Ground. The wise women of St. Veronica’s Guild welcome all unopened personal care items you get when you travel or shop this holiday season. Especially appreciated currently are: • Individual size soap bars, lotion, shower gel, toothpaste • Emery boards • Feminine hygiene products • Diapers- all sizes • Family size soap bars, toothpaste, shower gel bottles For more information, contact Lucy Perry, perry72@aol.com or Judy Bodner, jhbodner@mindspring.com

TOY DRIVE 2019 BENEFITING EMMAUS HOUSE Please join St. Monica’s Guild in a toy drive to assist Emmaus House in providing a cheerful Christmas to all in

their neighborhood. Santa and Mrs. Claus come to Emmaus House and give presents to more than 550 children from all over Atlanta.

HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP: Donate gifts: Bring new, unwrapped gifts to the bins in the Atrium until December 17. Write a check or give online: $35 will sponsor a child but any donation amount is helpful and appreciated. Make checks payable to “The Cathedral of St. Philip” and write Toy Drive in the memo line. Checks can be handed

to a guild member on Sunday mornings at the table in the Atrium or mailed to the Cathedral – Attention St. Monica’s Guild.

Or, give by credit card online at cathedralATL.org/contribute or at the kiosk in the Atrium. Reach out to Johanna Barnes at jpbarnes74@gmail.com with any questions.

PASTORAL Care BLUE CHRISTMAS SERVICE For many of us, Christmas is a tough time, and can be the occasion for “feeling blue” in the midst of the culture focused on being happy and celebrating. At such times, we need to take time to acknowledge our sadness, loss, and grief. The anguish of broken relationships, of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the loss of a loved one, and even the loss of a dear family pet – all can contribute to a feeling of being alone, of “feeling blue,” in the midst of the season around us. The Cathedral invites you to join us in sharing a Blue Christmas service on Wednesday, December 18, at 6:30 p.m. in St. Mary’s Chapel. We invite you to move from “feeling blue” to experiencing the wonder and hope of Christmas. For questions, please contact the Rev. Dr. Bill Harkins, bharkins@cathedralATL.org, or Canon Cathy Zappa, czappa@ cathedralATL.org.

HISPANIC Ministry LA POSADA The celebration of the Posada has been a tradition in Mexico for 400 years. Many Mexican holidays include dramatizations of original events, a tradition which has its roots in the ritual of Bible plays used to teach religious doctrine to a largely illiterate population in Europe as early as the 10th and 11th centuries. The Posada is a novena, a service of nine consecutive evenings leading up to Christmas to celebrate the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem and not finding lodging. The tradition is for two groups of people singing responsively on either side of the door in the church or at someone’s home. One group, playing Mary and Joseph, asks for “Posada,” or a place to stay each day. Once the innkeepers let them in, the Mary and Joseph group come into the home or church and kneel around the Nativity scene to pray. Latin American countries have continued to celebrate this holiday to this day, with very few changes to the tradition. The people asking for posada travel to 1 house each night for 9 nights. The Posada is typically celebrated with prayers, several songs, and then food and piñatas. It is very much a family oriented event of the expectation of the Christ. It is a celebration of great joy. At the Cathedral, we will celebrate a single night of the Posada on Saturday, December 21 at 6 p.m. in Child Hall. All are welcome!
