Kathryn enjoys cycling and hiking. She and her husband, Evan, have three children: Margaret (14), Park (13), and William (8).

WILL KLEIN Will has been a Cathedral member since 2004. He’s currently involved in several Cathedral ministries,

including Habitat for Humanity, the Dean’s Men’s

Bible Study, Adult Acolytes, Youth Acolyte Advisor, Prison Re-entry Housing Study Committee,

Usher, and the Antiques Show. After a career of

consulting in the financial services industry, Will is

now enjoying retirement. He serves on the Board of

Westbrooke Place HOA and volunteers at Atlanta Habitat. Will enjoys music, cooking, and being a handyman. Will and his wife, Karen, have raised and launched their two sons.

We gave been looking at what it means to be a mystic (it’s not as extraordinary as you might think!) and how the recovery of the contemplative tradition in the church might change how we go about being church. This Sunday, December 1, Canon George Maxwell will lead a discussion about how the Christian West lost its wisdom.

WARDENS Dorsey DeLong continues her two-year term as Junior Warden. The Dean has appointed Del King as Senior Warden.

The Dean has appointed Del King as Senior Warden for 2020-2021. Del has been a member of the Cathedral for 28 years. He is currently in the Cathedral Choir and Schola and is the President of the Choir. He previously served on the Parish Committee on Ministry for the discernment of a priest.

Professionally, Del is the Vice President of Human Resources at Emory University. In his role at Emory, Del has spent the last 22 years working with schools and divisions in the development, implementation, and management of human resources programs

The Nominating Committee selected Dorsey as their nominee for Junior Warden for 2019-2020. A member of the Chapter Class of 2020, she has served on the Executive Committee since accepting the Dean’s call serve as the 2018 Chapter Secretary. Dorsey has been a member of the Cathedral for 20 years. Professionally she is the assistant director at The Preschool at Second-Ponce. At the Cathedral, she is the co-founder of St. Ruth’s Ministry and is a member of St. Clare’s Guild. She also helped to get Mother’s Morning Out started, served on the

He has led the development of high performing teams, provided leadership on a wide range of projects and programs, and made a priority of providing quality development programs to Emory’s employees to enhance the organizational climate of the University. In the broader community, he is a member of The Order of St John and previously served on the Board of Directors for Georgia Piedmont Technical College. Del is married to Victor Moldovan, also a Cathedral member.

Friends of Cathedral Music Board, and taught Sunday School, among other things. Dorsey and her husband, Geoff, have four children: Mary Stewart, Harrison, Sims, and Pruit.

OUTREACH TOY DRIVE 2019 BENEFITING EMMAUS HOUSE Please join St. Monica’s Guild in a toy drive to assist Emmaus House in providing a cheerful Christmas to all in

their neighborhood. Santa and Mrs. Claus come to Emmaus House and give presents to more than 550 children from all over Atlanta.

CHILDREN'S Ministries CHRISTMAS PAGEANT SIGN-UPS It is time to sign up for the Christmas Pageant, held every year at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve. All children registered in Sunday School, from the 4-year-olds through fifth grade, are welcome to participate. Esquina HISPANICA LA FIESTA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE GUADALUPE Worship and share a meal with fellow Cathedral parishioners as we celebrate La Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe – the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe – on Wednesday, December 11, from 7–9:30 p.m. in Mikell Chapel.

Accounts claim that the Virgin Mary appeared four times before a native Mexican peasant named Juan Diego and once more before Juan Diego's uncle. According to those accounts, the first apparition occurred on the morning of December 9, 1531, when it is said that Juan Diego experienced a vision of a young woman at a place called the Hill of Tepeyac, which would become part of Villa de Guadalupe, in a suburb of Mexico City.

According to the accounts, the woman, speaking to Juan Diego in his native Nahuatl language (Aztec), identified herself as the Virgin Mary, “mother of the very true deity.” She was said to have asked for a church to be built at that site in her honor.

Juan Diego then sought out the archbishop of Mexico City, Fray Juan de Zumárraga, to tell him what had happened. The bishop did not believe Diego, but on the same day Juan Diego saw the young woman for a second time.

On Sunday, December 10, Juan Diego talked to the archbishop for a second time. The latter instructed him to return to Tepeyac Hill, and to ask the lady for a truly acceptable, miraculous sign to prove her identity. That same day, the third apparition occurred when Diego returned to Tepeyac and encountered the same woman, he reported back to her the bishop's request for a sign; she consented to provide one on the following day. By Monday, December 11, however, Juan Diego's uncle, Juan Bernardino, had fallen sick so Juan Diego was obliged to attend to him. In the very early hours of Tuesday, December 12, Juan Bernardino's condition having deteriorated overnight, Juan Diego set out to Tlatelolco to fetch a priest to hear Juan Bernardino's confession and help minister to him on his deathbed.

In order to avoid being delayed by the Virgin and having failed to meet her on the Monday as agreed, Juan Diego chose another route around the hill, but the Virgin intercepted him and asked where he was going. Juan Diego explained what had happened and the Virgin gently chided him for not having had recourse to her. In the words which have become the most famous phrase of the Guadalupe event and are inscribed over the main entrance to the Basilica of Guadalupe, she asked, “¿No estoy yo aquí que soy tu madre?” (“Am I not here, I who am your mother?”) She assured him that Juan Bernardino had now recovered and she told him to gather flowers from the top of Tepeyac Hill, which

was normally barren, especially in the cold of December. Juan followed her instructions and he found Castilian roses, not native to Mexico, blooming there.

The Virgin arranged the flowers in Juan's tilma, or cloak, and when Juan Diego opened his cloak before archbishop Zumárraga on December 12, the flowers fell to the floor, and on the fabric was the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

The next day, on December 13, Juan Diego found his uncle fully recovered, as the Virgin had assured him, and Juan Bernardino recounted that he too had seen her, at his bedside.

Juan Diego's tilma has become Mexico's most popular religious and cultural symbol, and has received widespread ecclesiastical and popular support.

Here at the Cathedral of St. Philip we gather to celebrate this occasion on the evening of December 11. We pray and children who attend the Spanish service present a reenactment of the story of Juan Diego. After the service, we gather for a light evening meal before returning home. Come be part of the annual and joyful experience of Christmas baskets for our Cathedral Habitat families – we are building an amazing 24 this year and need your help!

This has become a very popular event for us each year and you can help in any of several ways, including contributing food or monetary support, building baskets (beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 13), or delivering baskets (meeting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 14). This is something for kids and adults alike; make it a family event. For many of us, Christmas is a tough time, and can be the occasion for “feeling blue” in the midst of the culture focused on being happy and celebrating. At such times, we need to take time to acknowledge our sadness, loss, and grief.

The anguish of broken relationships, of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the loss of a loved one, and even the loss of a dear family pet – all can contribute to a feeling of being alone, of “feeling blue,” in the midst of the season around us.

The Cathedral invites you to join us in sharing a Blue Christmas service on Wednesday, December 18, at 6:30 p.m. in St. Mary’s Chapel. We invite you to move from “feeling blue” to experiencing the wonder and hope of Christmas.

On Sunday afternoon, December 1, at 4 p.m., the Cathedral will offer its annual Advent Procession of Lessons and Carols, sung by the Cathedral Choir. Those who have attended this candlelight service in past years know what a perfect opportunity it is to step back from the hectic pace of the post-Thanksgiving, pre-Christmas season, and take a few moments to contemplate its real meaning.

Our two services of lessons and carols (for Advent on December 1, and for Christmas on December 22) are adapted from the famous carol service at King’s College, Cambridge, which has become popular worldwide since World War II through annual radio broadcasts on Christmas Eve. For our Advent service we include the ancient O Antiphons, one after each of the seven lessons.

These Christian texts invoke the Messiah to return and have been sung through the ages at Vespers on the seven evenings leading up to Christmas, and each is sung to equally ancient and beautiful plainchant. Whether you best sense the eternal through timeless chant, or wonderful choral music, or popular carols sung by all, there is something for everyone in this service. Why not practice a “random act of kindness” and make the service a gift to someone this year by inviting them to attend? It may turn out to be one of the best gifts you give.
