FRIENDSHIPS By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral My dinner the other night, with old friends, prompts me to begin this harvest season of Thanksgiving with thanksgiving for friendships. I realize we are not at the official Day of Thanksgiving yet, but surely we can begin practicing for it! Yes, let’s practice for Thanksgiving. At a lovely dinner the other night, my wife and I enjoyed long conversation with two other couples whom we have known for a long time. The six of us have known each other through ups and downs, through moves and illnesses, through thrills and highlights. I remembered a poem I had written. That evening prompted me to consider friendships, and how I am so thankful for them. I give thanks not just for my own friends, but for yours, too. I am thankful for friendships all over the place! The way we have friends heartens our souls. Friendships form in beautiful ways throughout our lives. Friendships are intertwined histories. Friendships blossom when we meet mutual challenges, whether we prevailed in those challenges or not. Friendships happen when tragedies are experienced together. Friendships happen when we are being embarrassed with someone. Maybe a friend is someone with whom we have been weak together, maybe together in a drifting sailboat. A friend is someone with whom we watch our favorite team lose a close game. A friend is someone we have sat on a porch with, someone we have sat in a bar with. A friend is someone whose child we thrill to see walking towards us. A friend is someone with whom we have gone on a double date. Friends are the people with whom we have walked together in the woods. A friend is the person we have sat beside in church. Friends have children in the same class as our children in school. Friends coach children’s sports teams together. Friends go fishing together. Friends share staff meetings together. Friends may even invest money together. Friends play bridge together; they play poker. They golf and run together. The people with whom we have gone on long road trips together are our friends. Friends are the people with whom we have been stuck at airports together. Friends tend vegetable and flower gardens together. Friends go to a funeral together. Friends go to a wedding together! Friends are the people with whom we can be silent, for an hour, and feel afterwards that we have had an exhilarating conversation. Friends know who we are, and they love us anyway. Friends are the people we know well, and we love them anyway. Friends hearten our souls. So, I begin the Thanksgiving holidays early this year. Thanksgiving is a season, anyway, not a day. It’s a lifestyle; it’s a practice. And I give thanks for friends, of all sorts and sizes and histories and hopes, yours and mine. My short little poem is called “Crystalized Crusty.” Crystalized crusty Seasoned friendships Thicken rich with time Taste like Parmigiano And burn like fatwood Georgia pine.

LONELY IN AMERICA
Child Hall Contemplating Christ: How to Become a Mystic without Really Trying!
Room 370 In this class, the Rev. Dr. Bill Harkins will discuss what some are calling an ‘epidemic of loneliness’ in the US, and the concomitant psychological/emotional effects such as depression, suicide, and disconnection. We will also discuss how to cultivate resilience and community in response to these public health issues, and theological considerations of both the epidemic, and the possible communal responses.
This term, we are looking at what it means to be a mystic (it’s not as extraordinary as you might think!) and how the recovery of the contemplative tradition in the church might change how we go about being church. This Sunday, November 17, Canon George Maxwell will continue the discussion about “Welcoming” and explain the contemplative practice known as the “Welcoming Prayer.” It’s a way of acknowledging God’s presence in the midst of a stressful physical or emotional situation.

RESPITE CARE Atlanta
RACE AND HEALING BOOK DISCUSSION – PART 2
VOLUNTEER WITH RESPITE CARE
Wednesday, November 20, 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Gould Room
The Cathedral is part of an exciting initiative this year to provide weekday adult respite care in our community staffed primarily by volunteers. With other interfaith congregations, we formed Respite Care Atlanta to offer a safe place for those with early to mid-stage cognitive impairment to interact with others, as well as give caregivers time for self-care. Will you volunteer to help us provide this vital service? Cathedral member and RCA volunteer Lucy Broos says, “Given we still have two children at home, I was concerned about the time commitment. In spending my first day there, I realized my involvement could be as little as two hours once a week. I started with a lunch shift but found myself drawn to the arts/activity time. I also thought it might be a little sad and unsettling; however I found it was just the opposite...joyful and uplifting! It’s an experience in which I truly see and feel the difference we can make in others lives. I invite anyone to come shadow with me for an hour. ” Volunteer information sessions are scheduled for Monday, November 18 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and Monday, December 9 from 10-11 a.m. at Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church. To register, please email Lola Battle at batlola@att.net, no later than two days before the scheduled event.
Myths America Lives By: White Supremacy and the Stories That Give Us Meaning is full of deep concepts that beg for discussion. In our first meeting, we grappled with these "myths" from a largely historical and developmental perspective. But, for author Richard T. Hughes, a key defining aspect of these myths—why he designated them as such—is that they are still continuing to shape us. In next Wednesday’s discussion, we will be wrestling with two questions. First, to what extent—and how—are these five myths and white supremacy affecting us now in our current, everyday lives? And, what concrete actions can we take to highlight and maximize these myths’ positive potential and negate and render void their negative potential? Our format this time will broaden the discussion, exploring opposing perspectives, each of which has widespread buy-in in different quarters of today’s environment. This discussion promises to be meaningful and worthwhile for all who attend. Please join us regardless of whether you have read the book. Contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@cathedralATL.org or 404-365-1031, to RSVP or for more information. The Cathedral Thrift House has been serving the Cathedral and the Atlanta community since 1949. You know the drill: (1) you donate your gently used, quality items, (2) the Thrift House sells them, and (3) the profits are distributed to local charities. But, do you know the specific accomplishments that come from your donations? The Thrift House has given $200,000 to the Cathedral’s Capital Campaign and Endowment Fund over the years, as well as other Cathedral needs. Some of our large, additional contributions are the Child Hall elevator, Lanier House Apartment, and Cathedral organ console. The Thrift House also has donated over $300,000 to Atlanta community nonprofits including Georgia Innocence Project, Emmaus House, Good Samaritan Health Center, Boyce L. Ansley School, and Respite Care Atlanta. The beautiful sounds from the Cathedral organ; education for a homeless child; respite care for a family member or friend—all these benefits result from your Thrift House donations. Thrift House Manager Nellie Holleman, our volunteers, and our employees, are the conduit; but it all begins with your donation. We want the Thrift House to have the best merchandise assortment ever for the upcoming Christmas season and beyond. We need your donations to make that happen. And, by the way, come shop with us! We have some fantastic and unique treasures. Thank you for your 70 years of support. It is an astonishing record of generosity.
OUTREACH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY CHRISTMAS BASKETS Come be part of the annual and joyful experience of Christmas baskets for our Cathedral Habitat families – we are building an amazing 24 this year and need your help! This is something for kids and adults alike; make it a family event. Cathedral TOWERS
Episcopal Church WOMEN
TOWERS CELEBRATES 40 YEARS
ST. VERONICA'S COLLECTING TOILETRIES
The Cathedral Towers is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year! In operation since 1979, this parochial entity located adjacent to the Cathedral campus provides safe and affordable apartment housing pursuant to HUD guidelines. As many as 195 individuals occupy the Towers at any given time. The residents, staff, and board members will mark the occasion with a celebratory reception later this month. Happy Anniversary!
St. Veronica’s Guild would like to thank all those who have participated in this year’s toiletry drive for four Episcopal ministries in the Atlanta area which serve people who are poor, homeless, or have mental and emotional disabilities. Six times this year more than 200 pounds of donated and purchased personal care items were sent to these ministries. For example, the ministry that serves people who are homeless requested 100 each of soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, and washcloth and lesser amounts of razors, combs, and emery boards. The other three ministries requested different quantities of these, some needing individual sizes and others family-size packages of diapers, feminine hygiene products and white socks. In this season of thankfulness and gift giving, please help St. Veronica and the Cathedral support the work of local ministries by contributing new, unopened, travel or regular size personal care items. You may leave your donations at the Information Desk. With questions, please contact Lucy Perry, perry72@aol. com or Judy Bodner, 404-814-1468.

United Thank OFFERING
YOUTH Ministries
UTO INGATHERING THIS SUNDAY Every day we have so many blessings that come our way. Let us rejoice and give thanks this fall by participating in our Cathedral’s United Thank Offering (UTO). If you’ve been filling a UTO blue box be sure to bring it to church with you this Sunday, November 17 for our Ingathering. What’s the purpose of the United Thank Offering? To develop a personal spiritual discipline of gratitude, and to learn to live a blessed life by counting your blessings. When you see life through eyes of gratitude, you’ll see blessings everywhere. This new perspective will reveal the grace that already inhabits your life. What is the money used for? Every cent collected fulfills diocesan grant requests. UTO is entrusted to receive the offerings, and to distribute 100% of what is collected to support innovative mission and ministry throughout the Episcopal Church and provinces of the Anglican Communion. How can I participate? • Write a check to the Cathedral of St. Philip (with UTO in the memo line) and place it in the offering plate or mail it to the church. • Make a contribution to UTO at the Atrium kiosk. • Make a contribution to UTO online at cathedralATL.org/contribute.
