Child Hall From Contemplation to Compassionate Social Action: The Creative Encounter of Howard Thurman This Sunday, October 27, Dr. Lerita Coleman Brown will teach the 10:10 a.m. class in Child Hall, following the Spirituality Conference, which she is leading on Saturday.

Dr. Brown, the Ayşe I. Carden Distinguished Professor Emerita of Psychology at Agnes Scott College, is a spiritual director/companion, writer, retreat leader, and speaker. She earned her B.A. from UC Santa Cruz and Ph.D. from Harvard University. A graduate of the Shalem Institute for Spiritual

Formation, Dr. Brown promotes contemplative spirituality, the living wisdom of Howard Thurman, and uncovering the peace and joy in one’s heart on her website, peaceforhearts.com, and other social media platforms.

As a mystic, theologian, and spiritual adviser to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Howard Thurman possessed the uncanny and prophetic ability to connect transformative silence with sacred activism. Dr. Brown will give a brief examination of how Thurman’s contemplative roots were affirmed and strengthened through his 1935 pilgrimage to India and meeting with Mahatma Gandhi, which reveals his quiet role in changing the course of American history.

Canon George Maxwell will resume the Contemplating Christ series in Old Fashioned Sunday School next Sunday, November 3.

MUSIC ALAN LEWIS TO PERFORM This Sunday, October 27, we welcome organist Alan Lewis as our recitalist at 3:15 p.m. A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory and the University of California at Berkeley, Alan currently serves as Director of Music at Calvary Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A multiple-time performer on the Cathedral’s recital series, Alan’s program will consist of music from J.S. Bach’s Clavierübung, Part III (the “German Organ Mass”). Come and hear this marvelously talented organist play some of Bach’s greatest music for the instrument.

Adult EDUCATION ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASS Our fall confirmation class is underway, but it’s not too late to join! This class is for adults who want to be confirmed in the Episcopal Church and for those who are new to the Episcopal Church or to the Cathedral and would like to learn more. PILGRIMS’ REFLECTIONS

HEAVENLY MUSIC FOR ALL SAINTS' SUNDAY

A group of Cathedral parishioners and friends took a pilgrimage in August to the Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama. Over the next few weeks, we will share some of their reflections here. More reflections are posted online at cathedralATL.org/raceandhealing.

On Sunday, November 3 at 4 p.m., the Cathedral Choir will offer the Requiem by Maurice Duruflé, which is unquestionably one of the most beautiful and deeply profound sacred choral works in the entire history of music. This work is most often performed on concert stages in North America, so this will be a rare opportunity to experience it within the context for which it was written – a fully choral service of Holy Communion.

Many people will attend the service to remember the life of a loved one who has passed into life eternal during the past year, and hear their names read aloud during the prayers, but this is transcendently beautiful music that offers hope and a palpable glimpse of heaven to all. From Dorsey DeLong: The memorial felt like it grew ten times its size as we approached it. I walked on the perimeter for many

yards, completely overcome. I was afraid to enter and hesitant to feel. Upon entering, the tears came. My anxiety increased walking along the wall of Alabama counties—familiar place after place and reading name after name. Counties where I have spent time and played and had fellowship. Each familiar place was a punch in the gut, another knot, another lump. My heart raced as I spied my home county and the lone name that stood there. A new word easily came to mind as the one I should have thought of on the bus.

My purpose for the day should have been and quickly changed to “remember.” To remember these names, these people, their families. Especially those families whose last name was listed in multiples on some of the pillars. Walking through the replicas outside, it was too easy to spot the dates—my children’s birthday, my birthday, a day close to now. One county with two columns of unknown people who all died within two days. Undone.

In retrospect, the memorial itself was built so that we walked level with the structures in the beginning, but then the sidewalk sloped and the ramp went deeper—gradually but very evident until we were immersed with them and ultimately they rose higher and higher above us, although we were still standing in the depths. What an image.

When I googled Bunk Richardson and also began to follow the EJI Instagram, I breathed a sigh of relief when I found that Gadsden has erected a memorial marker at the site of his lynching. I plan to visit it when I get back there. Such a long way to go. So many counties, so many names, so much damage. But I am eternally grateful to have at least begun the journey in the better direction.

The lump has returned as I have just typed this again.

by a chamber orchestra, underwritten as a gift from our Friends of Cathedral Music, using Duruflé’s orchestration for strings, harp, trumpets, timpani, and organ.

The Cathedral Choir will also have the privilege of participating in the world premières of three settings of The Beatitudes by the Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds over All Saints weekend. Ešenvalds is one of the most compelling composers writing sacred music today, and these Englishlanguage settings of Matthew 5:3-12 are truly gorgeous additions to the sacred repertoire. They were commissioned by the Ann Stookey Fund for New Music, on whose board our Canon for Music, Dale Adelmann, has served throughout its existence, and we are honored to be able to offer them publicly for the first time. Join us for these glimpses of heaven!

United Thank OFFERING WE’RE ENTERING A SEASON OF THANKFULNESS! DEAR FRIENDS AND FELLOW PARISHIONERS, We are so delighted that the Dean has chosen the theme “Greater Good” for the 2020 Stewardship Campaign. Over the past several years, the Cathedral’s Stewardship Committee has worked very hard to emphasize the communal nature of giving to the church. We have hosted dinners, thank you gatherings, and small groups. We have gathered our committee together to talk about why giving to the church matters (to the church and to the parishioner!), to write hand-written thank you’s, and to call every pledging household personally.

This work has been successful on several fronts: parishioner pledging participation has increased in the past two years, parishioner giving has reached a new high, and parishioner non-pledge giving continues to grow. In short, more parishioners are doing more at the Cathedral of the St. Philip!

This all goes to the Greater Good.

The money is important, but it is our sincere belief that the transformational power of Cathedral life is that we do this together—our hymns sound better when we all sing, our Sunday School classes work better when many voices are heard, and our worship services feel stronger when the pews are filled.

So, our call to you for 2020 is how will you contribute to the Cathedral’s Greater Good? Can you increase your pledge?

Can you encourage your fellow parishioners to pledge? Can you visit the sick or teach Sunday School? We need you and will be better (greater!) with your support. Join us!

Every day we have so many blessings that come our way. Let us rejoice and give thanks this fall by participating in our Cathedral’s United Thank Offering (UTO), and its ingathering on Sunday, November 17.

What’s the purpose of the United Thank Offering?

To develop a personal spiritual discipline of gratitude, and to learn to live a blessed life by counting your blessings. When you see life through eyes of gratitude, you’ll see blessings everywhere. This new perspective will reveal the grace that already inhabits your life.

What is the money used for?

“I want to make a difference, but I’m not sure where the money goes.”

Every cent collected fulfills diocesan grant requests. Since its founding in 1889, UTO has awarded 5,257 grants. UTO is entrusted to receive the offerings, and to distribute 100% of what is collected to support innovative mission and ministry throughout the Episcopal Church and provinces of the Anglican Communion.

How can I participate?

• Write a check to the Cathedral of St. Philip (with UTO in the memo line) and place it in the offering plate or mail it to the church.

• Make a contribution to UTO at the Atrium kiosk.

• Make a contribution to UTO online at cathedralATL.org/contribute.

ANTIQUES SHOW NOW SEEKING BENEFICIARIES

SMART DRIVER COURSE

The Cathedral Antiques Show is now accepting applications for its 2021 beneficiary.

Applications can be found online at cathedralantiques.org.

Viable applicant organizations will be Atlanta-area non-profit human services organizations that can demonstrate exemplary stewardship of resources, excellent governance, high operational efficiency, and lasting positive outcomes for populations served. The Cathedral Antiques Show is particularly interested in helping charities for whom the show’s support will be transformational. The deadline is November 22.

AARP is once again offering its Smart Driver course at the Cathedral, Thursday, November 13. The course is a six-hour refresher aimed at motorists 50 years old and older. Some of the objectives of the class include understanding the effects of aging on driving; learning driving strategies that take into account the changes we experience as we age; and a number of other topics designed to make you a safer driver. At the completion of the class, you may be eligible to receive a discount on your automobile insurance policy. Class begins at 9 a.m. and will be completed by 4 p.m. There will be an hour break for lunch. Feel free to bring a lunch.The cost for AARP members is $15 and $20 for non-members. You will pay at the door by cash or check.

WORSHIP EVENSONG WITH DEDICATION OF WINDOWS Our Evensong service this Sunday, October 27, observing the Feast of St. Simon and St. Jude, will include a special dedication of our new stained glass windows, which feature Bishops Alexander and Wright. With Dean Sam Candler officiating, Bishop Robert Wright preaching, and Bishop Neil Alexander assisting, this 4 p.m.

Evensong will include a procession through the ambulatory to view the windows. If you aren’t sure what or where the ambulatory is, come find out!

The service of Choral Evensong (sung Evening Prayer) dates from the sixteenth century, yet has its roots in the far more ancient Daily Offices of Vespers and Compline. One of the jewels of our Anglican/Episcopal worship tradition, Evensong has given birth to one of the largest and richest bodies of sacred music outside of the Mass itself. It is, at its heart, a contemplative worship service, and much of the service is sung by the choir alone, employing sounds that span the known history of Christian music. It is a truly holy experience!
