The CATHEDRAL TIMES The weekly newsletter of the Cathedral of St. Philip · Serving Atlanta and the World · September 8, 2019
THERE’S NOTHING LIKE ACTUALLY GOING TO THE GAME! By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral I loved Labor Day in Atlanta this past week. Yes, I paused to give thanks for all those who labor. Yes, I lamented the damage Hurricane Dorian was inflicting upon Bahamas, and I worried about its future track along the Southeastern coast of the United States. But I also went to the baseball game on Labor Day. Being from Atlanta, there is only one baseball game; and that’s the one the Braves are playing that day. As some of you know, I am an old and very devoted Braves fan, having become attached to them since 1966, the year they arrived in Atlanta. Even now, every day, I can usually tell you what time the game is; and I can supply you with the latest statistics. Further, if I am in the car during the game, I will often listen to it on the radio. At home, I will glance at the game on the television. And television these days provides excellent coverage, with close-ups and replays and commentary. However, there is nothing like actually going to the game! At the Braves park, or at any baseball stadium, the energy is different from any experience I get from television (or even radio, which still might be a close second!). In the stadium, I am with people. I am simply with people, all sorts of people. There are the wellgroomed people, and the not so well-groomed people. There are the loud people, and there are the quiet people. Young and old, of every race and nationality. We are all there, in that public space, watching something we love, making way for each other in the crowded rows, picking up someone’s accessory which fell from the row behind us, passing a hot dog from the vendor to our neighbor. Sometimes, we cannot see exactly what is happening. Sometimes we are so far from the batter that it takes us a split second to pick up where the ball was hit. But we get it. The amazing spirit of a baseball game, and most any game, is amplified when fans and spectators experience it together. It’s the same with theater; it’s the same with music. Well, perhaps you know where I am headed with this reflection. I feel the same way about Sundays at church! The amazing Spirit of God is amplified when we people of faith experience God together. At the Cathedral of St. Philip, we are proud to be able to livestream worship services, to produce podcasts, to print out sermons, to publish newsletters, all of which encourage and inspire love. But there is nothing like the energy of worshipping God together, to be with people, all sorts of people: the well-groomed and not so wellgroomed, the loud and the quiet, the young and the old. To make way for each other in pews and aisles, to pass the plate to each other, to pass awkward gestures of peace with each other. Like being at a baseball game, too, sometimes we cannot see or hear exactly what just happened! But we get it. Something holy is happening, and holiness is amplified when people gather together. I am thrilled that “The Season” has begun again at the Cathedral of St. Philip! The energy of faithful Christians gathered together draws me again, away from the perfectly good things I can experience individually, to the perfectly good things I can experience in the community of God’s people. Our season brings us some new players! We have, at least, two new clergy, one being our new youth minister. We have new parishioners! We have new programs! And we have the veterans, the wise and the aged who show us new folks the traditions of the team and the traditions of the game. There’s nothing like actually going to the game. And there’s nothing like actually going to church. Yes, it takes preparation and time. It requires some effort from us. Things can go wrong, and people can irritate us. But something greater than us also greets us in those places; that “Something Greater” is what amazes and thrills us. At church, it is the mysterious Spirit of God, alive and growing, in this beautiful community of God.

Adult EDUCATION
Most regular children’s, youth, and adult Sunday School classes resume Sunday, September 8 at 10:10 a.m.
OLD FASHIONED SUNDAY SCHOOL
LIVING FAITH
Child Hall Contemplating Christ: How to Become a Mystic without Really Trying!
Room 120 Join Canon Lauren Holder and Canon Cathy Zappa as we explore what it means to live out our faith through conversation with scripture and tradition, contemporary books, and, most important, one another. All are welcome! We will kick off this fall with a study of the Enneagram, a spiritual personality typing system and helpful resource for spiritual growth.
What will the church of the future will look like? The Jesuit theologian Karl Rahner famously said, “The Christian of the future will be a mystic or he will not exist at all.” Rahner was convinced that the secularization of life that began after the end of the Second World War would pull people away from the church. He feared that, if people did not have a deep experience of God, they would not commit themselves to a sustained life of faith. This term, we are looking at what it means to be a mystic (it’s not as extraordinary as you might think!) and how the recovery of the contemplative tradition in the church might change how we go about being church. This Sunday, September 8, Canon Maxwell will talk about the theology of Deification by exploring the relationship between the Scriptures and Christian mysticism. Deification is an ancient Christian doctrine that affirms the belief that through the incarnation, through which God took on human nature, so too humanity has been made “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4). As always, you will find a light heart, a broad welcome, and good coffee. We look forward to seeing you!
EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY Education for Ministry (EfM) is a program of the School of Theology of the University of the South. Participants commit one year at a time to meet weekly in seminars led by mentors trained in studying the Bible, church history, and theology, while also developing a wonderful community of members. There is a weekly lesson and study guide, but no tests or papers to prepare. A few spaces are available for an EfM class that begins Tuesday, September 10. The class meets in the Lanier House on Tuesday nights, 7-9:30 p.m. For more information and enrollment forms, contact Rick Tyler, 404-375-6470, or Deirdra Glover, 770-865-2141.
OUR TRUE SELVES Room 240 The Rev. Dr. Thee Smith leads this series of co-listening classes that aim to enhance our ability to be fully ourselves—our true, worthy, and estimable selves. Topics can include everyday experiences and range through tough political issues as well as lifestyle choices and faith matters. For more information contact the Rev. Dr. Smith, tsmith@cathedralATL.org or 404-365-1093.
COMMUNITY, CONVERSION, AND HOPE Room 239 Canon Carolynne Williams leads this fall series based upon G. Porter Taylor’s book, To Dream as God Dreams: Sermons of Community, Conversion, and Hope.
PARENT COFFEE HOUR Room 121 Parents of middle- and high-schoolers meet for fellowship and discussion of topics that youth are exploring in Sunday School, as well as parenting and faith.
SMALL GROUP BIBLE STUDY Room 122 Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis lead an ongoing small group Bible Study focusing on a particular book of the Bible for several months at a time. This year, we are reading the Gospel of Matthew. For more information, please contact Jim Bingham at 404-373-3273 or binghamjim@bellsouth.net.
BIBLICAL GREEK Room 356 Continuing Biblical Greek classes are offered on Sundays from 1:15–2:45 p.m. for anyone who wants to learn the basics of translation using grammar aids, lexicons, and commentaries. For more information, contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith at tsmith@ cathedralATL.org.
MUSIC
CHILDREN'S Ministries
AFTERNOON RECITALS RESUME THIS SUNDAY
GODLY PLAY RETURNS!
This Sunday, September 8, our weekly Sunday afternoon recital series resumes at 3:15 p.m. with an improvisation on the stained glass windows of the Cathedral by our Organist and Associate Choirmaster, Dr. Patrick A. Scott. We hope to have Patrick return many times in the future to perform on our recital series, but with his departure from the Cathedral at the end of this month, this may be the last opportunity for a while to hear him improvise in his typical masterly fashion. Don’t miss it!
Godly Play, our Sunday School classes for children age 2 through fifth grade, returns this Sunday, September 8, at 10:10 a.m. Helping parents to access age-appropriate ways to participate in and reflect on our liturgical life, our sacred stories, our call to Christian service, our charge to share the Good News, and our shared spiritual life is essential to our ministry with children. Godly Play is at the heart of our Sunday morning classes and the Godly Play philosophy permeates all that we do with children and families at the Cathedral.
4 P.M. SERVICES RESUME THIS WEEK Along with the Sunday afternoon recitals, this week also begins our weekly 4 p.m. services of Choral Evensong. Sung by the Cathedral Schola, music for this Sunday will include works by Shephard, Sumsion, Boyle, and Paulus. We encourage everyone to make this service a regular part of your worship at the Cathedral.
CHILDREN'S CHAPEL IS BACK THIS WEEK Children’s Chapel resumes in full this Sunday, September 8. Children’s Chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church. Children four years (by September 1, 2019) through fifth grade begin in church with their parents, then follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the sequence hymn. Children rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Two- and three-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m.
YOUTH Ministries COLABORATE: BIBLE STUDY (MIDDLE SCHOOL)
BECOMING BELOVED COMMUNITY (HIGH SCHOOL)
Sixth through eighth graders: join us for middle school Sunday School! This year we will take an in-depth look into the New Testament. Based on the “Colaborate: Bible Study” curriculum by Sparkhouse, we will use activities, videos, and scripture to ask questions such as, “Why do we hold Paul in such high esteem, given his poor track record with Christians?” and “Where did the Bible take place?” We will meet in Room 382 from 10:10–11 a.m. starting Sunday, September 8.
At each baptism in the Episcopal church, several questions are asked of those wanting to begin a new life in the community of Christ. While some of these questions are about belief, others detail practices which sustain us in the work of “seeking and serving Christ in all persons.” In preparation for our pilgrimage to the Legacy Museum on October 19, the high school Sunday School class will explore how Christians in this region of the U.S. have both succeeded and failed in their practices to “honor the dignity of every human being.” Join us for conversations about how our faith calls us to engage the legacy of our shared history. We will meet in Room 368 from 10:10–11 a.m. starting Sunday, September 8. (Please note: Students need not attend the pilgrimage to participate in Sunday classes. The themes and ideas that will be presented in class are applicable to everyday life and all youth are encouraged to attend).

THE ROAD BACK TO YOU – AN ENNEAGRAM JOURNEY TO SELF-DISCOVERY Have you ever wondered if you are living your authentic self as God created you to be? The Enneagam is an ancient personality type system used to understand how we are wired, both positively and negatively. In this six-week book club hosted by St. Clare’s Guild, Canon Cathy Zappa and Caroline Wallace will facilitate a Christian approach using The Road Back to You – An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery by Ian Cron and Suzanne Stabile. In discovering one’s true self, we can discern how to use our unique God given gifts for the good of others and the world, develop a greater compassion and understanding for others, and grow in our love for God. The group will meet in the Gould Room from 1–2:30 p.m. on Mondays, September 9 – October 21 (except October 14). All women are welcome! Please RSVP to cfwallace2@comcast.net so we know how many to expect. Purchase the book prior to the first class at the Cathedral Book Store for a 10% discount, either in person or online at cathedralbookstore.org.
CAPITOL CITY OPERA AT THE CATHEDRAL St. Veronica’s Guild presents the annual performance of the Capitol City Opera at the Cathedral! Please join us Tuesday, September 10 in Child Hall for dessert, coffee, and great entertainment. Coffee and desserts will be served at 6:30 p.m., with the performance at 7 p.m. All parishioners and friends are invited to join us. ONE DAY CULTURAL COMPETENCE WORKSHOP The Cathedral is hosting a workshop presented by One Small Change, Inc. on Friday, September 20, from 10 a m. – 3 p.m. These oneday Cultural Competence workshops are designed to create dialogue and introduce “foundational” concepts for how one person can make a positive difference. We address topics such as prejudice, implicit and explicit bias, poverty, privilege, the impact of stereotypes, microaggressions, and the role of expectation. We will cover different topics using a variety of media film clips and resources, large and small group activity, and home and pre-work assignments. The One Small Change facilitators emphasize strengths and dialogue, which make this training a positive and effective learning environment. Participants will learn to develop and practice skills that will help them navigate and create sustainable effective change and match their services to the communities in which they serve. There is no charge for this training, but space is limited so register soon: cathedralATL.org/competence. Contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@ cathedralATL.org, with any questions.

STEWARDSHIP CALLING PARISHIONERS INTERESTED IN ASSISTANCE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION The Cathedral considers education to be one of the four pillars (in addition to worship, mission and community) of our work of building the beloved community. From Godly Play to Bible Studies to LaAmistad, the Cathedral is forming Christian leaders for the future. Thanks to the generosity of a parishioner, the Cathedral will be able to support parishioners with financial need who are seeking a higher learning degree (undergraduate, graduate, community college, etc.). We are forming a committee to draft policies and procedures, mentor scholarship recipients, and identify future scholarship candidates. If you have experience and/or are interested in participating in this work, please contact the Canon Lauren Holder at lholder@cathedralATL.org. If you are interested in financially supporting this work, please contact David Rocchio at drocchio@cathedralATL.org. Thank you!
