DR. CATHERINE MEEKS TO PREACH THIS SUNDAY We Have A Shared Legacy of Resilience On Sunday, August 25, we welcome Dr. Catherine Meeks, executive director of the Absalom Jones Center for Racial Healing, to preach and speak. Dr. Meeks will preach at the 8:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services, and speak in Child Hall at 10:10 a.m. Dr. Meeks describes the presentation: “Four hundred years ago, twenty Angolans from southern Africa were sold into slavery in Virginia and a system of pain and suffering emanated from that fateful sale that gave birth to an amazing legacy of resilience. In many ways it is difficult to discern how such a legacy could have been forged by a people who were separated from everything that was known to them and who had their humanity challenged as the slaves were challenged by their circumstances. However, they forged that path and all of us, white, black, or brown, have access to the gift of that capacity to make a way out of no way and to find hope in the midst of hopelessness. The greatest evidence of that legacy can be found in the words of African American spirituals with their expressions of struggle and triumph in spite of the sorrow that was endured. The forum will address this legacy of resilience and how it offers hope for us in the 21st Century and is offered as a part of the commemoration of the 400th year anniversary of this event.” Prior to the opening of the Center for Racial Healing, Dr. Meeks chaired its precursor, Beloved Community: Commission for Dismantling Racism for the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta. A sought-after teacher and workshop leader, she brings four decades of experience to the work of transforming the dismantling racism work in Atlanta. The core of her work has been with people who have been marginalized because of economic status, race, gender or physical ability as they pursue liberation, justice and access to resources that can help lead them to health, wellness and a more abundant life. This work grows out of her understanding of her call to the vocation of teacher as well as her realization that all of humanity is one family which God desires to unite. Dr. Meeks is the retired Clara Carter Acree Distinguished Professor of Socio-Cultural Studies from Wesleyan College and founding executive director of the Lane Center for Community Engagement and Service. She characterizes herself as a midwife to the soul of her students and workshop participants. She has spent many years sharing the insights that she gained from her pursuit of the truth. She has had many great teachers including her sons, the Bible, Jungian psychology, cross cultural stories and other books of wisdom. But her greatest teacher is rheumatoid arthritis because it has forced her to learn many new ways to listen to her body and to pay attention to the messages from her heart. Dr. Meeks is frequently asked to present commentaries on Georgia Public Radio and other radio and television programs. She is the author of six books and one inspirational CD and is the editor of the bestselling book, Living Into God’s Dream: Dismantling Racism in America and co-author of Passionate for Justice: Ida B Wells as Prophet for Our Times. She holds a master’s degree in Social Work from Clark Atlanta University and Ph.D. from Emory University. In remembrance of the 400th anniversary of the first enslaved Africans’ landing in North America in 1619, the Cathedral will rings its bells in unison with other Episcopal churches across the country this Sunday, August 25, at 3 p.m.

EDUCATION SUNDAY SCHOOL
WOMEN’S EARLY MORNING BIBLE STUDY
Most regular children’s, youth, and adult Sunday School classes resume Sunday, September 8 at 10:10 a.m. Dr. Catherine Meeks will teach in Child Hall this Sunday, August 25, at 10:10 a.m. See front page for more information.
The Women’s Early Morning Bible Study will resume its weekly Tuesday 7 a.m. meetings in Walthour Library on Tuesday, September 3. This group of thoughtful, committed, fun women will take up the Gospel of Luke this fall for a deeper dive into our current lectionary. All women are welcome. Contact Canon Lauren Holder, lholder@cathedralATL.org, for more information.
EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY Education for Ministry (EfM) is a program of the School of Theology of the University of the South. Participants commit one year at a time to meet weekly in seminars led by mentors trained in studying the Bible, church history, and theology, while also developing a wonderful community of members. There is a weekly lesson and study guide, but no tests or papers to prepare. A few spaces are available for an EfM class that begins Tuesday, September 10. The class meets in the Lanier House on Tuesday nights, 7-9:30 p.m. For more information and enrollment forms, contact Rick Tyler, 404-375-6470, or Deirdra Glover, 770-865-2141.
YOUTH Ministries YOUTH DONUT SOCIAL THIS SUNDAY Middle school and high school youth are invited to come have breakfast, catch up with friends, and meet our Sunday school teachers this Sunday, August 25 at 10:10 a.m. on the youth hall.
CHILDREN'S Ministries CHILDREN'S CHAPEL IS BACK Children’s chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church. Children four years (by September 1, 2019) through fifth grade begin in church with their parents, then follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the sequence hymn. Children rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Starting September 8, two- and three-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m. To enhance their worship experience, we are looking for guitarists, piano-players, singers and other musicians to share their gifts! For more information, or to volunteer, email Ciara Castenell at ccastenell@cathedralATL.org or Jay Perkins at perkinscjp@gmail.com.
GODLY PLAY OPEN HOUSE NEXT WEEK Parents are invited to join their children ages 2 through 5th grade for Godly Play Open House this Sunday, August 25 at 10:10 a.m. Meet your teachers, hear a story, and share a feast. Helping parents to access age-appropriate ways to participate in and reflect on our liturgical life, our sacred stories, our call to Christian service, our charge to share the Good News, and our shared spiritual life is essential to our ministry with children. Godly Play is at the heart of our Sunday morning classes and the Godly Play philosophy permeates all that we do with children and families at the Cathedral. Go to cathedralATL.org/ godlyplay to register your child for Godly Play.

OUTREACH HELP BCM STORE FRESH FOOD August is the Cathedral’s month to support the Buckhead Christian Ministry’s newly established “Client Choice” food pantry. Much work has gone into the implementation of this new concept at BCM and our Cathedral Farmers Market is now consulting with them in hopes of providing more fresh food choices. In order to make this happen, BCM will need to acquire two coolers similar to the model pictured. Such industrial coolers cost approximately $10,000 each and St. Anne’s would like to challenge the Cathedral this month to raise enough to purchase at least one for BCM. Of course, if anyone knows of a business willing to donate such equipment, that would be equally fantastic! In addition to monetary donations of $20 or more, BCM has provided a short list of items they especially need at this time: peanut butter, grape jelly, rice, canned black beans, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Look for St. Anne’s members in the Atrium every Sunday in August to receive your donations or feel free to make your gifts either at the Atrium kiosk or online at cathedralATL.org/BCM. In our past two drive months (August 2018 and February 2019), you have given an impressive total of $19,808. Let’s make August 2019 our best ever in support of our neighbors in need. Thank you!

THE 32 BEETHOVEN PIANO SONATAS In celebration of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday next year, pianist (and Cathedral coordinator for music) Timothy Gunter is in the midst of a series of eight recitals, performing all 32 of the composer’s piano sonatas. The piano sonatas of Beethoven have been regarded for more than a century as one of the hallmarks of the piano repertoire. The old saying among pianists for generations has been that if you can play all of the Beethoven piano sonatas, you should be able to play anything. The final performance of this summer is Saturday, August 24, at 4 p.m. Four more recitals will follow next summer. There is no admission fee, although any donations will be gratefully accepted and applied to the Cathedral Choir’s 2021 pilgrimage to St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, and Winchester Cathedral.

Cathedral STAFF I KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN … Patrick Scott, our beloved Organist and Associate Choirmaster, has taken a new job as the Director of Music and Organist at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Memphis, Tennessee. He will be leaving us at the end of September. It’s not surprising, really. Patrick has been with us for five years. He’s a talented organist and choirmaster. We all knew that the day would come when he would need to move to another church and take on the responsibilities of leading their music program. It’s the right thing for him to do. I just didn’t expect it to be so hard to say goodbye to him! I didn’t anticipate that his leadership of the choristers would prove to be so transformational in their lives or that I would feel like I was losing such a friend. But, say goodbye we must. So, please join me in thanking Patrick for all that he has given to us over the last five years and wish him well in his new position at Grace-St. Luke’s. —The Rev. George Maxwell, Vicar
