WELCOME, NATE HUDDLESTON! By the Rev. Cathy Zappa Canon for Education and Worship We are excited to welcome the Reverend Nate Huddleston to the Cathedral, as Priest Associate for Youth and Young Adult Ministries—and his wife Katherine! A native Tennessean with over ten years of professional experience in youth ministry, Nate comes to us most recently from Calvary Episcopal Church in Summit, New Jersey, where he served as Assistant Rector for Youth Ministry and Outreach. He holds a Master of Divinity from Sewanee - University of the South, as well as a masters in industrial organizational psychology from Middle Tennessee State University and a BA in psychology from Oklahoma State. Nate brings with him his great energy for and commitment to building community, fostering spiritual growth, and engaging youth through sacrament and meaningful service. We look forward to having Nate on our staff and to being blessed by his many gifts—and his BBQ! Join us in welcoming Nate and Katherine, and come meet Nate at any of the following events: •

August 18, 10:10 a.m.—Come by the youth table at the Ministry Fair in Child Hall.

•

August 18, 1 p.m.—High school lunch with Nate at Fellini’s

•

August 18, 5–7 p.m.—Parent party at the home of Holly Sims. Contact Canon Cathy Zappa, czappa@cathedralATL.org, to RSVP and for address.

•

September 15, 5–7 p.m.—Youth pool party at the home of Sara and Donnie Chapman. RSVP to Nate Huddleston, nhuddleston@cathedralATL.org.

From the Rev. Nate Huddleston: It is with great joy and a hopeful heart that I look forward to joining the staff at the Cathedral of St. Philip. I have a fervent belief that youth and young adult ministry is at the core of who the Cathedral is called to be, and being a steward of that program is a phenomenal opportunity. I believe that building a Christian community of young people by offering experiences that cultivate relationships and meet the needs of adolescence are the marks of an effective youth ministry. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, and raised in the South, my wife, two labs, and I are excited to come “home” to the land of good BBQ and college football! (Oklahoma State and Vanderbilt are our teams.) When I am not roaming the sidelines of high school or middle school games, or planning the next mission trip, you can find me fly fishing, quail hunting, or tinkering on my 1970 International Scout 800. I look forward to joining the Cathedral family this September!

EDUCATION Most regular children’s, youth, and adult Sunday School classes resume Sunday, September 8 at 10:10 a.m.

WE HAVE A SHARED LEGACY OF RESILIENCE On Sunday, August 25, we welcome Dr. Catherine Meeks, executive director of the Absalom Jones Center for Racial Healing, to speak in Child Hall at 10:10 a.m. Four hundred years ago, twenty Angolans from Southern Africa were sold into slavery in Virginia and a system of pain and suffering emanated from that fateful sale that gave birth to an amazing legacy of resilience. In many ways it is difficult to discern how such a legacy could have been forged by a people who were separated from everything that was known to them and who had their humanity challenged as the slaves were challenged by their circumstances. However, they forged that path and all of us, white, black, or brown, have access to the gift of that capacity to make a way out of no way and to find hope in the midst of hopelessness. The greatest evidence of that legacy can be found in the words of African American Spirituals with their expressions of struggle and triumph in spite of the sorrow that was endured. The forum will address this legacy of resilience and how it offers hope for us in the 21st Century and is offered as a part of the commemoration of the 400th year anniversary of this event.

CHILDREN'S CHAPEL IS BACK THIS WEEK Children’s chapel takes place during the 8:45 a.m. service as an option for parents and children who are not yet ready to experience the full liturgy together, though children are always welcome in “big” church. Children four years (by September 1, 2019) through fifth grade begin in church with their parents, then follow the children’s acolytes and leaders out at the sequence hymn. Children will come back to the Nave for baptisms and rejoin their parents at the Offertory. Starting September 8, two- and three-year-olds attend their own chapel service, which begins at 8:45 a.m.

GODLY PLAY OPEN HOUSE NEXT WEEK Parents are invited to join their children ages 2 through 5th grade for Godly Play Open House next Sunday, August 25 at 10:10 a.m. Meet your teachers, hear a story, and share a feast. Helping parents to access age-appropriate ways to participate in and reflect on our liturgical life, our sacred stories, our call to Christian service, our charge to share the Good News, and our shared spiritual life is essential to our ministry with children. Godly Play is at the heart of our Sunday morning classes and the Godly Play philosophy permeates all that we do with children and families at the Cathedral. Go to cathedralATL.org/godlyplay to register your child for Godly Play.

THE 32 BEETHOVEN PIANO SONATAS In celebration of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday next year, pianist (and Cathedral coordinator for music) Timothy Gunter is in the midst of a series of eight recitals, performing all 32 of the composer’s piano sonatas. The piano sonatas of Beethoven have been regarded for more than a century as one of the hallmarks of the piano repertoire. The old saying among pianists for generations has been that if you can play all of the Beethoven piano sonatas, you should be able to play anything. The final performance of this summer is Saturday, August 24, at 4 p.m. Four more recitals will follow next summer. There is no admission fee, although any donations will be gratefully accepted and applied to the Cathedral Choir’s 2021 pilgrimage to St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, and Winchester Cathedral.

STEWARDSHIP WHY WE GIVE TO THE CATHEDRAL By Donnie and Sara Chapman We make our pledge to this church each year for so many reasons, but most of all because we are grateful to call the Cathedral “home”. This church community has been a part or our family’s life for decades. We have shared many memories here, from baptisms to weddings to funerals. We have been involved in a variety of ministries and developed great friendships here over the years. So why do we pledge? We pledge to show our gratitude. When we come to church we are grateful to have: • The lights on and the doors unlocked when we arrive. • The sextons who have the church clean and ready for us. • The staff in the nursery to greet our grandchild with open arms. • Printed programs and hymnals so we can follow the services and sing along. • The leaks in the roof repaired and the grounds looking wonderful. • A website that is current and full of helpful information • Beautiful music flowing from our organ and a talented choir singing the hymns. • The sacraments of bread and wine given to us at each service. • Flowers and candles on the altars. • Heat and air conditioning so we are comfortable throughout the building • Hot coffee! Most of all, we are grateful to have a wonderful group of clergy who pray for us, teach us and are ready to celebrate with us in the good times and to minister to us in times of need. The Dean recently wrote “Grace is free, but ministry costs money!” We know that every dollar makes a difference to this church. We are grateful to pledge so that God can continue to spread his love and grace throughout this wonderful community that we all share. —Donnie and Sara Chapman

Sara Chapman has been a member of the Cathedral since she was confirmed here in 1968. Donnie joined her when they were married here in 1982. They have two adult children, Hunter and Catherine. Sara is a first grade teacher at The Westminster Schools. Donnie is in commercial real estate.

During the Vietnam War, hundreds of American prisoners of war (POWs) faced years of brutal conditions and horrific torture at the hands of North Vietnamese guards and interrogators who ruthlessly plied them for military intelligence and propaganda. Determined to maintain their Code of Conduct, the POWs developed a powerful underground resistance. To quash it, their captors singled out its eleven leaders, Vietnam’s own “dirty dozen,” and banished them to an isolated jail that would become known as Alcatraz. None would leave its solitary cells and interrogation rooms unscathed; one would never return. As these eleven men suffered in Hanoi, their wives at home launched an extraordinary campaign that would ultimately spark the nationwide POW/MIA movement. The members of these military families banded together and showed the courage not only to endure years of doubt about the fate of their husbands and fathers, but to bravely fight for their safe return. When the survivors of Alcatraz finally came home, one veteran would go on to receive the Medal of Honor, another would become a U.S. Senator, and a third still serves in the U.S. Congress. A powerful story of survival and triumph, Alvin Townley’s Defiant will inspire anyone wondering how courage, faith, and brotherhood can endure even in the darkest of situations. Defiant is available at the Cathedral Book Store. Townley’s newest book Captured is the young adult telling of the story of Defiant.

OUTREACH HELP BCM STORE FRESH FOOD August is the Cathedral’s month to support the Buckhead Christian Ministry’s newly established “Client Choice” food pantry. Much work has gone into the implementation of this new concept at BCM and our Cathedral Farmers Market is now consulting with them in hopes of providing more fresh food choices. In order to make this happen, BCM will need to acquire two coolers similar to the model pictured. Such industrial coolers cost approximately $10,000 each and St. Anne’s would like to challenge the Cathedral this month to raise enough to purchase at least one for BCM. Of course, if anyone knows of a business willing to donate such equipment, that would be equally fantastic! In addition to monetary donations of $20 or more, BCM has provided a short list of items they especially need at this time: peanut butter, grape jelly, rice, canned black beans, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Look for St. Anne’s members in the Atrium every Sunday in August to receive your donations or feel free to make your gifts either at the Atrium kiosk or online at cathedralATL.org/BCM. In our past two drive months (August 2018 and February 2019), you have given an impressive total of $19,808. Let’s make August 2019 our best ever in support of our neighbors in need. Thank you!
