VACATION WAS GREAT. NOW WHAT? By the Rev. George Maxwell Vicar We are just back from our time in Maine. I preached and presided over services and a weekly Bible study for two weeks at All Saints-by-the-Sea, an Episcopal chapel on the island of Southport in the Boothbay region. We stayed in a cottage that the chapel provided for us. We had a wonderful time! We hiked, kayaked, ate lobster, spent time with friends, and ate some more lobster. We were happy … and not just in the sense of having fun. We were happy in the sense of being awake and alive. Why, I wonder? My first reaction is that it is better to look at the world through the wide-open eyes of a seven-year-old boy than the narrowed frame of an outraged political commentator! A more helpful reflection might be that the freedom we enjoyed from the demands of our regular schedule gave us some sacred space in which to remember what it is that gives meaning and purpose to our lives. Now that we’re back, I wonder how we hold on to what we found? I think it’s about attitude. I know from past experience that it won’t take long for me to want to get back in control of things. I have a sense of how I want my life to be and I’m eager to get on with the business of making that vision a reality. Somehow I seem to have gotten the idea that if there’s going to be meaning in my life, then I’m going to have to be the one to create it. I’ll wake up one day to find that the happiness I felt on vacation has faded into the background like a luxury that I can no longer afford. And, there I’ll be, impatiently waiting for whoever it is to finish saying whatever they are saying so that I can correct them! The late Dr. Gerald May called this attitude “willfulness.” He said it’s like saying “yes, but…” to life and warned that it invariably leaves us feeling separate and alone. Following Jesus, he counsels, calls us to adopt an attitude of “willingness” – as in “not my will but Thy will be done” (Matthew 26:39). Willingness is a way of saying “yes” to life by surrendering our desire for control and opening ourselves to the mystery of being alive. If I am willing, then I will spend less time reacting to what shouldn’t be and more time participating in things as they are in appropriate and meaningful ways. Willingness is finding the patience to listen to what others are saying and let what I hear show me things I hadn’t seen before! So, what about the happiness we felt on vacation? It might be that holding on to it requires us to loosen our grip. Meaning and purpose are not things we create for ourselves as much as things that we discover as we go about the business of doing God’s will. I think Dr. May got it right when he said, “Willfulness must give way to willingness and surrender. Mastery must yield to mystery.”

STEWARDSHIP SUMMER STEWARDSHIP UPDATE Happy Summer! I hope these months are giving you a chance to take care of yourself and get a little closer to God. The Cathedral remains very busy with church services, blessing of runners, summer camps, and improvements and repairs. We are preparing for a great Homecoming on August 18. And, clergy and staff are already preparing sermons, organizing concerts and recitals, and developing lesson plans for a great program year. In the meantime, join us for Sunday School, or at the Farmers Market, or for Lemonade in the Shade. Of course, your financial contribution to God through the Cathedral makes all this happen. Please visit cathedralatl. org/contribute to give or make a pledge. Thank you! David Rocchio, Director of Stewardship

ST. MONICA'S Guild

St. Monica’s Guild is a group of mothers with young children ranging from newborn to middle school age.

Our focuses are spiritual growth, service, and fellowship. This year, we will discuss The Year of Biblical Womanhood by Rachel Held Evans, available for purchase in the Cathedral Book Store. This fun and thought-provoking read will be the focus of discussion for our evening programs on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, but if you have not read the book – come anyway! We are kicking off our program year with dinner at Georgia Grille on Tuesday, August 20 at 7:30 p.m. We hope you will join us to reconnect and make new mom friends. Please RSVP to Dana Brewer, danakbrewer@ gmail.com, or Leslie Meriwether, lesmeri75@gmail. com, so we can get a good headcount. PASTORAL Care DEMENTIA CAREGIVER WORKSHOP Caring for someone with dementia, whether it is Alzheimer's or another type of memory loss, can be challenging and at times overwhelming. On Thursday, August 22, join professionals from Sixty Plus Services for a comprehensive workshop to learn about types and

stages of dementia, helpful resources, and how to take care of yourself. The workshop is from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the Gould Room. There is no fee to attend, but registration is required and will likely fill quickly. Lunch and materials are provided. To register, call 1-877-5273712 or go to piedmont.org/classes.

OUTREACH HELP SUPPORT BCM’S “CLIENT CHOICE” FOOD PANTRY St. Anne’s Guild, as ambassadors for Buckhead Christian Ministry (BCM) at the Cathedral, will again be grateful for your support in August of the ministry’s new “client choice” food pantry. Thanks to your generosity last year, BCM has completed the necessary physical build-out of their pantry space and purchased software that will allow clients to shop for their own food instead of receiving pre-selected food bags. BCM now asks for monetary donations in our semi-annual drives (August and February) because they are carefully transitioning to the systematic purchase of specific foods from selected suppliers in order to control quality and inventory. Its purchasing power with your donations of $20 or more will be substantial. Please make your check to: the Cathedral of St. Philip, with “BCM Drive” on the note line. If, however, you really like to shop, BCM has shared a small list of specific items that they need at this particular time: peanut butter, grape jelly, rice, canned black beans, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Look for St. Anne’s members in the Atrium every Sunday in August to receive your donations or feel free to make your gifts either at the Atrium kiosk or online at cathedralATL.org/BCM. Many thanks to all who continue to support BCM’s mission in serving our neighbors in need!
