MESSIAH WATCH! By Dr. Dale Adelmann, Canon for Music I nearly drove off the road, I was laughing so hard. Listening to the local classical music station on my way to work one December, the radio host decided to create a subsection of the daily arts bulletin, which — with her extraordinary good humor — she dubbed the “Messiah Watch,” because there were so many forthcoming performances of Handel’s Messiah in the region. Forget Santa but watch out, for goodness’ sake! The Messiah is going to be around every corner! The announcer was one of my Cathedral Chorister parents, so the next time I saw her, I suggested that she really could have named it a “Messiah Warning” [cue ominous music… maybe a Dies irae, or a few cracks of thunder!]. Now, having grown up in a Minnesota town that makes Lake Wobegon seem big, where the weather is as likely to be a topic of conversation as the hot dish is to be beige, I learned early on that it is important to know the difference between a weather watch and a warning. A tornado watch means that conditions are such that there could be a tornado. A tornado warning means that one has been sighted somewhere nearby, and you had better be prepared to take protective cover, pronto. In the case of the Messiah, it really was a warning: he would be turning up everywhere! I wonder, do we always walk into church watching for and expecting a personal encounter with God? I would like to propose that we should. Whether we are in a frame of mind to perceive it fully or not, God is going to be there. What’s more, I feel certain that the Spirit has an infinite number of ways to reveal glimpses of heaven to us and, I sometimes suspect, may even get a kick out of doing so in unexpected ways. I particularly think about all of this when planning or rehearsing music for worship or concerts. My hope is that the conditions will be created in which there is a high likelihood that we will encounter the transcendent. Indeed, our sacred trust and responsibility in music ministry — be it as a choir member, organist, instrumentalist, or conductor — is to make music with such care and inspiration that it enlivens our spiritual senses and reveals something of God… rather than distracts, or draws attention to ourselves, or (good Lord, deliver us!) merely passes the time. “Sing praises with all your skill,” Psalm 47:7 admonishes. How fortunate we are to have thousands of years of sacred poetry — and more than a millennium of inspired, extant music — to assist in our perception and praise of the Divine. At this point in the cycle of the year, we enjoy the anticipation of new beginnings and new possibilities. The 2019–2020 Cathedral music season brochure is complete, and it announces details of five sacred concerts, 21 recitals, and the 56 most complex of the 160 services that the various Cathedral choirs will sing this year. Musically, there will be time-tested standards and important new voices in the mix. In a sense, our music brochure declares a watch, and gives us a heads-up about potential “thin spaces” where God may be especially perceptible this year. We invite you to come. Experience the beauty of holiness and the holiness of beauty. Explore your relationship with the Artist Inimitable. And come with this expectation: a “Messiah Warning” is always in effect here. Or, as some Minnesotans I have known might say, “God is gonna show up, donch’ya know.” SAVE THE DATES

THE 32 BEETHOVEN PIANO SONATAS In celebration of Ludwig van Beethoven’s 250th birthday next year, pianist (and Cathedral coordinator for music) Timothy Gunter will perform all 32 piano sonatas in a series of eight recitals this summer and next. The piano sonatas of Beethoven have been regarded for more than a century as one of the hallmarks of the piano repertoire. The old saying among pianists for generations has been that if you can play all of the Beethoven piano sonatas, you should be able to play anything. The remaining performance dates this summer are: Saturday, August 10, at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 24, at 4 p.m. There is no admission fee, although any donations will be gratefully accepted and applied to the Cathedral Choir’s 2021 pilgrimage to St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, and Winchester Cathedral.

FLOWER Guild A NEW ARRANGEMENT FOR FLOWERS! A Flower Guild member has come forward and offered $50,000 to match gifts to a newly established Flower Fund Endowment. The fund will be a part of the Cathedral Endowment and we will use the earnings from gifts to help fund the work of the Flower Guild. A gift of any amount will make a difference and be matched dollar for dollar. I’m pleased to report that 17 families have donated a total of $40,500 in the past two months. We are so grateful for these contributions! As you may know, the process by which we have funded the beautiful flowers at the Cathedral is changing. For years, we could count on weddings to underwrite a large share of our budget for the purchase of flowers. Fewer couples are getting married at the Cathedral (and churches, in general) and that means we need to look at different models for funding. We have two special opportunities. A gift of $1,000 or more will allow the donor or their designee to be recognized with other donors annually on a selected Sunday in the service leaflet. A gift of $5,000 or more will allow the donor or their designee to be recognized on a specified Sunday perpetually. Can you consider joining us in participating in this wonderful commitment? You can contribute by check or at cathedralATL.org/flowerfund. Contact David Rocchio at 404-365-1033 or drocchio@ cathedralATL.org with any questions. Many thanks!

OUTREACH HELP SUPPORT BCM’S “CLIENT CHOICE” FOOD PANTRY St. Anne’s Guild, as ambassadors for Buckhead Christian Ministry (BCM) at the Cathedral, will again be grateful for your support in August of the ministry’s new “client choice” food pantry. Thanks to your generosity last year, BCM has completed the necessary physical build-out of their pantry space and purchased software that will allow clients to shop for their own food instead of receiving pre-selected food bags. BCM now asks for monetary donations in our semi-annual drives (August and February) because they are carefully transitioning to the systematic purchase of specific foods from selected suppliers in order to control quality and inventory. Its purchasing power with your donations of $20 or more will be substantial. Please make your check to: the Cathedral of St. Philip, with “BCM Drive” on the note line. If, however, you really like to shop, BCM has shared a small list of specific items that they need at this particular time: peanut butter, grape jelly, rice, canned black beans, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. Look for St. Anne’s members in the Atrium every Sunday in August to receive your donations or feel free to make your gifts either at the Atrium kiosk or online at cathedralATL.org/BCM. Many thanks to all who continue to support BCM’s mission in serving our neighbors in need!
