A SUMMER OF SELF-DISCOVERY By the Rev. Lauren Holder Canon for Outreach and Congregational Life Every summer begins with a stack of books I hope to read. Not so much beach reads, because Lord know there’s no such thing as “reading” on a beach with two toddlers. No, my summer reading is usually something that speaks to faith, the human experience, or both. Often, these titles re-appear during the program year as material for Sunday School, Bible Study, or a retreat. This year’s reads accidentally center around self-discovery. I didn’t plan it this way … a friend recommended one book, the Cathedral staff read another, one I had purchased before it was released, and one had just been sitting in my Audible account waiting for me to start listening. I’m currently halfway through the five titles, and my guess is I’ll only complete four of them. I never, ever, get through the whole stack. Isn’t that the way with summer? It begins as a thing of lengthy hopefulness—the weeks stretch out long before us, the days get increasingly longer as we near the solstice, the possibilities are as endless as the cicada’s song. Until suddenly the end is too near. It may be a month away, but it looms large nonetheless. All the things I had planned! All the hours I had anticipated! The sand in the hourglass seems to pick up speed. That’s where I find myself right now. There’s still plenty of summer left, but the opposite feels true. Do you feel it too? If not—teach me your ways! But if so—let this be a gentle reminder that you may not get to read it all or do it all, but you will get to do enough. Indeed, you likely already have done enough. Consider what remains the icing on the cake—or perhaps more appropriately, the merigue on the key lime pie. I think time contracts when we come from a place of scarcity—perhaps other things (love?) do as well. But time and life can expand once more when we come from a place of gratitude and abundance.

EDUCATION LIVING LIFE AS OFFERING Many Sundays we hear the offertory sentence, “Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God.” In this two-week series taught by Cathedral seminarian Nicole Lambelet, we are considering what “sacrifice” and “offering” meant in the ritual life of the Hebrew people and in the New Testament, and how the Christian tradition has adopted these ancient terms to talk about our own sacred meal. Join us this Sunday, July 21 at 10:10 a.m. in Child Hall for the second of two sessions; to offer your own insights and life experience to what promises to be a lively discussion!

SPIRITUALITY "WOMEN OF THE BIBLE" PILGRIMAGE TO ISRAEL IN 2020 (FOR MEN AND WOMEN) Join other Cathedral parishioners and pilgrims from around the world for a spiritual retreat with St. George’s College in Israel. We will be participating in a ten-day study pilgrimage called “Women of the Bible,” which offers a reflective spiritual experience for women and men who wish to focus on often overlooked perspectives in the Bible. In addition to the study pilgrimage, our Cathedral group will have extra days at the beginning and the end of the pilgrimage to explore this holy region on our own. The travel dates are May 31-June 14, 2020. The estimated cost is $5000, though we are still in the beginning stages of pricing group airfares and ground transportation. A deposit of $700 is required before August 1 to secure your spot. If you are interested, contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@cathedralATL. org or 404-365-1031, for more complete information.

The piano sonatas of Beethoven have been regarded for more than a century as one of the hallmarks of the piano repertoire. The old saying among pianists for generations has been that if you can play all of the Beethoven piano sonatas, you should be able to play anything. The remaining performance dates this summer are: Saturday, July 27, at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 10, at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 24, at 4 p.m. There is no admission fee, although any donations will be gratefully accepted and applied to the Cathedral Choir’s 2021 pilgrimage to St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, and Winchester Cathedral.
