ORGAN DEMONSTRATION THIS SUNDAY

PILGRIMAGE TO ISRAEL IN 2020

Have you ever wondered how a pipe works, and how our organists use five keyboards (one of which they play with their feet!), and all those buttons and knobs to make the 5130 pipes in our historic Aeolian-Skinner organ come to life? Did you know that, right up until the Industrial Revolution, the pipe organ was the most complicated machine known to humankind? On Sunday, June 2, at 10:10 a.m., adults and parishioners of all ages are invited to the Nave for an organ demonstration with Dr. Jack Mitchener, our organist and artist-in-residence.

Join other Cathedral parishioners and pilgrims from around the world for a spiritual retreat with St. George’s College in Israel.

We will be participating in a ten-day study pilgrimage called “Women of the Bible,” which offers a reflective spiritual experience for women and men who wish to focus on often overlooked perspectives in the Bible. The program is based in two venues: St. George’s College in Jerusalem and in a guest house in Galilee.

In addition to the study pilgrimage, our Cathedral group will have extra days at the beginning and the end of the pilgrimage to explore this holy region on our own.

The travel dates are May 31-June 14, 2020. The estimated cost is $5000, though we are still in the beginning stages of pricing group airfares and ground transportation. A $500 non-refundable deposit is required to sign up. Space is limited! OUR TRUE SELVES Room 240 The Rev. Dr. Thee Smith leads this series of co-listening classes that aim to enhance our ability to be fully ourselves—our true, worthy, and estimable selves. Topics can include everyday experiences and range through tough political issues as well as lifestyle choices and faith matters. For more information contact the Rev. SMALL GROUP BIBLE STUDY Room 122 Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis lead an ongoing small group Bible Study focusing on a particular book of the Bible for several months at a time. OUTREACH RESPITE CARE ATLANTA SEEKS VOLUNTEERS

As Episcopalians, we have promised in our Baptismal Covenant to “seek and serve Christ in all persons” and to “strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being.” In an effort to better understand our country’s troubled history and its impact on all of us, you are invited to participate in any and all of these summer opportunities for learning, and open and safe conversations.

BOOK DISCUSSION OF JUST MERCY: A STORY OF JUSTICE AND REDEMPTION BY BRYAN STEVENSON Sunday, June 30, 4-6 p.m., Walthour Library “A powerful true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us and an inspiring argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice.”

BOOK DISCUSSION OF THE CROSS AND THE LYNCHING TREE BY JAMES H. CONE Thursday, July 25, 5-7 p.m., Walthour Library “An exploration of these emotionally charged symbols and their interconnection in the history and souls of black folk.”

Both discussions will be led by Canon Cathy Zappa and the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith.

The Cathedral is part of an exciting, new initiative to provide weekday adult respite care in our community staffed primarily by volunteers. With other interfaith congregations, we have formed Respite Care Atlanta to offer a safe place for those with early to mid-stage cognitive impairment to interact with others, as well as give caregivers time for self-care. Will you volunteer to help us provide this vital service?

Volunteer information sessions are scheduled for June 10, July 17, August 14, and September 23 from 10-11 a.m. at SecondPonce de Leon Baptist Church. To register, please email Lola Battle at batlola@att.net, no later than two days before the scheduled event.

DONATE TOILETRIES FOR LOCAL MINISTRIES Summer is coming with travel and shopping, so please remember to collect both travel and standard size containers of personal care items. St. Veronica's Guild will pack these items for use by Emmaus House, Holy Comforter's Friendship House, Church of the Common Ground and Crossroads Ministry. Recipients will benefit from your contribution of things you may take for granted each morning. Toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant, and soap are so necessary to preserving human dignity. St. Veronica also collects combs, razors,diapers, feminine hygiene products, white socks, and lotion.

Please support the work of these local ministries by contributing unopened, travel or regular size personal care items.

YOUTH Ministries THANK YOU, MAGGIE! Maggie Paul has served the Cathedral of St. Philip faithfully for the last four years, one as a Youth Ministry intern, and three as the Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries.

She has been a caring pastor to our youth and their families, while building up a community and programming that will continue to welcome and nurture them in faith. As Maggie leaves us at the end of June to begin this next chapter of her life and ministry, we give thanks for the good work she has done here and send her on with our blessing!

My Wonderful Cathedral Family, The Cathedral is a special and holy space.

This community greets everyone who enters this space with warm hospitality, and the grace with which it responds to the surrounding community and each other is only part of its excellence. The Cathedral communicates God’s love with the greatest optimism of the risen Christ and has taken initiative in times of uncertainty and of great joy in this community and the world. The Cathedral is and continues to be a “house of prayer for all people.”

During my four years here, we have shared many laughs, some tears, and an abundance of love. We have played together, prayed together, and broken bread together. Clergy, staff, and parishioners alike have truly instilled in me the importance of grace, excellence, and hospitality, and I have strived to live these out in my own work here and will bring them with me wherever I go.

As people grow, the Holy Spirit calls them in different ways, and that is why I am writing you all today. I have accepted a call to serve at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte, NC where I will be a member of their Children, Family, and Youth Team as the Assistant Director for Youth and Family Ministry. I am excited for this opportunity, but I am grateful for the time that I have shared with this community of faith. I know that I am going to miss you all very much.

EDUCATION LEARN SPANISH AT THE CATHEDRAL This summer, we are working with our partner LaAmistad to offer a ten-session Spanish class for adults. Taught by a professional Spanish teacher and native bilingual speaker, the course uses a hybrid approach, with the Warren Hardy method, to have you speaking after ten weeks. The cost for the ten sessions is $200, plus $29.95 for books.

The classes will be Wednesdays, 5 – 6:30 p.m., from June 12 – August 21. (There is no meeting on July 3.)

Children's MUSIC SUMMER MUSIC CLASSES Looking for fun family activities this summer? Join one of our Allegro music classes taught by Brenda Pruitt.

Using a unique Musikgarten curriculum designed for families with children of mixed ages, “All Together Now” addresses early childhood developmental processes through music and movement activities. Music immerses the child in language, evokes movement, stimulates the brain, and fosters physical coordination - all in a group setting that builds community. It’s a truly holistic experience, and it’s great fun, too!

All are invited to the Lanier House Lawn Sundays at 10:10 a.m. for lemonade, cookies, and a chance to catch up with old friends or meet new ones.

Who: Open to children from birth through age 5. Older siblings welcome to attend as guests. Caregiver attends with the child/children up to age 3.

When: Classes begin May 28. Visit a class in the first two weeks for free!
