THE ANNUAL PARISH MEETING OF THE CATHEDRAL OF ST. PHILIP IS THIS SUNDAY! Whatever service you usually attend, and whoever you are, please join us this Sunday, December 9, at 10 a.m., in Child Hall, for the annual parish meeting of the Cathedral of St. Philip! No adult classes will meet during this time.

At this meeting, all members—and all associate members, friends, and visitors!—gather together for common celebration. Ours is a grand community, a “great community of communities,” and this parish meeting is our opportunity to gather in one place.

Join us! As in recent years, we will meet during the regular education hour. We will hear reports from myself and from several parish leaders. The annual parish report, with its complete review of the 2018 year, will also be distributed.

Please pray for the slate of Chapter nominees for the 2021 Chapter class. Our Nominating Committee has worked faithfully and efficiently to present a slate of six nominees—Teddi Bair, John Beane, Del King, Haven Long, Coty Rosenblath, and Scott Russell. The Nominating Committee has also nominated Dorsey DeLong for Junior Warden. Austin Hall continues his two-year term as Senior Warden. Please see pages 4-5 for their biographies.

WORSHIP BLUE CHRISTMAS SERVICE For many of us, Christmas is a tough time and can be the occasion for “feeling blue,” while the culture around is focused on being happy and celebrating. The constant refrain on radio and television, in shopping malls and churches, about the happiness of the Christmas season, and about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation, the gut-wrenching loss of a loved one, and even the loss of a dear family pet – all can contribute to feeling alone, or “blue,” especially during the holidays. There are years when we hurt at Christmas, and we struggle to join in the festivities. At such times we need to co-create sacred space, and take time to acknowledge our sadness, loss, and grief.

And, we need to know that we are not alone. The Cathedral invites you to join in sharing a Blue Christmas Service on Wednesday, December 19, at 6:30 p.m., in St. Mary’s Chapel.

God’s presence is also for those who mourn and for those who struggle, and God’s Word comes to shine light into our darkness. We pray that you may find comfort and peace and may experience the wonder and hope of Christmas, even in the midst of “feeling blue.” Please feel free to invite others to come. Christmas Lessons & Carols Sunday, December 23 – 4 p.m.

Adult Sunday School classes will not meet this Sunday, December 9, so that all may attend the annual Parish Meeting in Child Hall. While parents attend the meeting, children are invited to watch a movie together in Room 316, upstairs from the Atrium. Youth will meet in Room 382.

SPIRITUALITY CONTEMPLATIVE SPIRITUALITY GROUP OFFERING Contemplative living is a way of being in the world with an attention to the awareness of God’s presence in our lives.

This group, led by Barbara Pendergrast (a spiritual director, chaplain, and Cathedral parishioner), invites us to practice listening to self and each other differently, to become more familiar with contemplative ways of being in the world, to practice staying present with self and others in those places that we want to change or fix in ourselves and others, to be introduced to literature and learning around contemplative writers and practitioners, to form spiritual community, and to have the opportunity to receive God’s love through setting aside intentional time for that awareness.

We will learn different forms of contemplative prayer such as centering prayer, welcoming prayer, Lectio Divina, the labyrinth, and Thomas Keating’s teachings on true/false self. In addition, the group will practice silent prayer each gathering and have an opportunity to check in (optional), holding one another’s stories with the response of holy silence.

We will meet in the Lanier House living room on Thursdays from 6-7:30 p.m., twice a month, for nine gatherings beginning

Thursday, January 10. The text we will be reading together is Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories that Heal, by Rachel Naomi Remen.

Copies afre reserved in the Cathedral Book Store. The cost of the offering is $180 for the nine weeks with the idea that those interested are intentional about participating in the whole offering. A member of the Chapter Class of 2018, Austin accepted the Dean’s call to serve a two-year term as Senior Warden last year, and now continues in that office through 2019. He has served on the Executive Committee since accepting the Dean’s call to serve as Secretary of the Chapter for 2016 and 2017. Austin was baptized at the Cathedral as an infant and grew up participating in the Cathedral’s children and youth programs. He has served as a co-chair of the Stewardship Committee, youth Sunday School teacher, an usher, a member of the Parish Committee on Ministry, and as a lay delegate to Diocesan Council for 2016–2019. Austin also participates in Sons of Thunder Men’s Bible Study. In the wider community, he is a board member of the Morningside Lenox Park Association and has volunteered with the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program. Austin is an Assistant United States Attorney. He and his wife Michelle have one son, Harris.

The Nominating Committee selected Dorsey as their nominee for Junior Warden for 2019-2020. A member of the Chapter Class of 2020, she has served on the Executive Committee since accepting the Dean’s call serve as the 2018 Chapter Secretary. Dorsey has been a member of the Cathedral for 19 years. Professionally she is the office coordinator at The Preschool at Second-Ponce. At the Cathedral, she is the co-founder of St. Ruth’s Ministry and is a member of St. Clare’s Guild. She also helped to get Mother’s Morning Out started, served on the Friends of Cathedral Music Board, and taught Sunday School, among other activities. Dorsey and her husband, Geoff, have four children: Mary Stewart, Harrison, Sims, and Pruit.

include home improvement, woodworking, and music. He and his wife, Caitlin, have two daughters, Eva (13) and Julia (10).

Every Christmas Eve, Cathedral parishioners pack sack lunches and worship with the members of Church of the Common Ground. The sack lunches contain sandwiches, fruit, and cookies. Sign up to help serve at cathedralATL.org/ commonground.

This year we would like for each sack lunch to also contain a Christmas card for the person to open. Christmas cards are special to receive no matter whether your home roof is on a building or whether your “home roof ” is the canopy of sky, trees, and clouds. So, stop by the Atrium on Sundays, December 16 and 23 between services to add your name to the Christmas wishes we are sending this year. Come be part of the annual and joyful experience of Christmas baskets for our Cathedral Habitat families – we are building an amazing 23 this year and need your help! This has become a very popular event for us each year and you can help in any of several ways, including contributing food or monetary support, building baskets (beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 14), or delivering baskets (meet at 9 a .m. on Saturday, December 15).

TOY DRIVE 2018 BENEFITING EMMAUS HOUSE Please join St. Monica’s Guild in a toy drive to assist Emmaus House in providing a cheerful Christmas to all in their neighborhood.

Last year, 540 children were given a new gift from Mr. and Mrs. Claus during the Children’s Christmas Festival. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Emmaus House welcomes more than 1,000 neighbors to share in a variety of holiday celebrations ranging from children all the way to seniors.

We are asking for either a toy donation or monetary donation in order to provide another wonderful Christmas season for them in 2018. For any questions please reach out to Johanna Barnes, jpbarnes74@gmail.com.

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT SIGN-UP It is time to sign up for the Christmas Pageant, held every year at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve. All children registered in Sunday School, from the 4-year-olds through fifth grade, are welcome to participate. YOUTH Ministries YOUTH CONFIRMATION STARTS IN JANUARY Confirmation is when a person makes the decision to take ownership of the promises made by their parents, Godparents, and grandparents at their baptism, in order to live out their Baptismal Covenant. At the Cathedral, we encourage Confirmation during the 8th grade year, and our 8th grade Sunday school curriculum is a Confirmation curriculum.

All youth are invited to participate in the Confirmation program if they feel ready, so long as they are at least in 8th grade. Those wishing to participate in the Confirmation program are asked to prayerfully commit to attend classes during the spring semester, participate in small group discussions during that time, attend the Confirmation retreat, complete the Confirmation journal questions every week, and be an active member at the Cathedral. The Confirmation program begins January 11-13 with a retreat to Camp Mikell and continues throughout the semester during the Sunday School hour. Those who choose to be confirmed will participate in the Confirmation service on April 28.
