Adult EDUCATION THE REV. PAUL-GORDON CHANDLER TO SPEAK ON KAHLIL GIBRAN Dean Sam Candler will welcome the Rev. Paul-Gordon Chandler as guest speaker at the Dean’s Forum this Sunday, December 2, at 10:10 a.m. in Child Hall.

Chandler will take us on a fascinating journey through the all-embracing spirituality of Kahlil Gibran, the early 20th century Lebanese-American poet, artist, and mystic, author of the bestselling book The Prophet. He explores how Kahlil Gibran, a supreme East-West figure, can be a much-needed guide in the midst of today’s global challenges, related to peace, harmony, and building bridges between the creeds of the Middle East and West.

Chandler has recently written In Search of a Prophet: A Spiritual Journey with Kahlil Gibran about his experience reading Gibran’s body of work while traveling to the places Gibran lived. The book is not a traditional biography, but a compelling spiritual journey through Gibran’s writings, art, and the places he lived. From his birthplace village high in the snowy

mountains of Lebanon, Chandler leads us through his emigration to Boston, art training in Paris, career in New York, and to the far reaching places of influence his writings and art have traveled, from Cairo to Mexico City. Chandler is an author, art curator, social entrepreneur, Episcopal priest, and authority on the Middle East and ChristianMuslim relations. Having grown up in Senegal, West Africa, he has lived and worked extensively around the world in leadership roles within faith-based publishing, the arts, ecumenical relief and development, and The Episcopal Church. From 2003-2013 he was the rector of the international Episcopal church in Cairo, Egypt.

Based now out of the Chicago area, Chandler is the president of CARAVAN, an international peacebuilding non-profit organization that uses the arts to build bridges between the creeds and cultures of the Middle East and the West. He is also a canon at All Saints’ Cathedral, Cairo, Egypt and has authored four nonfiction books in the fields of Christian-Muslim relations, global Christianity, spirituality, and the Middle East.

A member of the Chapter Class of 2018, Austin accepted the Dean’s call to serve a two-year term as Senior Warden last year, and now continues in that office through 2019. He has served on the Executive Committee since accepting the Dean’s call to serve as Secretary of the Chapter for 2016 and 2017. Austin was baptized at the Cathedral as an infant and grew up participating in the Cathedral’s children and youth programs. He has served as a co-chair of the Stewardship Committee, youth Sunday School teacher, an usher, a member of the Parish Committee on Ministry, and as a lay delegate to Diocesan Council for 2016–2019. Austin also participates in Sons of Thunder Men’s Bible Study. In the wider community, he is a board member of the Morningside Lenox Park Association and has volunteered with the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program. Austin is an Assistant United States Attorney. He and his wife Michelle have one son, Harris.

The Nominating Committee selected Dorsey as their nominee for Junior Warden for 2019-2020. A member of the Chapter Class of 2020, she has served on the Executive Committee since accepting the Dean’s call serve as the 2018 Chapter Secretary. Dorsey has been a member of the Cathedral for 19 years. Professionally she is the office coordinator at The Preschool at Second-Ponce. At the Cathedral, she is the co-founder of St. Ruth’s Ministry and is a member of St. Clare’s Guild. She also helped to get Mother’s Morning Out started, served on the Friends of Cathedral Music Board, and taught Sunday School, among other activities. Dorsey and her husband, Geoff, have four children: Mary Stewart, Harrison, Sims, and Pruit.

CONTEMPLATIVE SPIRITUALITY GROUP OFFERING

PREPARING THE HEART IN ADVENT

Contemplative living is a way of being in the world with an attention to the awareness of God’s presence in our lives.

This group, led by Barbara Pendergrast (a spiritual director, chaplain, and Cathedral parishioner), invites us to practice listening to self and each other differently, to become more familiar with contemplative ways of being in the world, to practice staying present with self and others in those places that we want to change or fix in ourselves and others, to be introduced to literature and learning around contemplative writers and practitioners, to form spiritual community, and to have the opportunity to receive God’s love through setting aside intentional time for that awareness.

“Our brokenness is the wound through which the full power of God can penetrate our being and transfigure us in God.” – Jean Vanier The quiet day will take place in the Lanier House on the Cathedral campus, 9:30 a .m. – 2 p.m., this Saturday, December 1.

In this Advent quiet day, come spend time preparing your heart for the birth of Wisdom. The heart can be prepared to welcome the Christ, born in the poorest, mostly unlikely corner of our hearts. This day will include opportunities for wisdom practices that prepare and open the heart for transformation: chant, extended silence for individual reflection with readings, the labyrinth, and body prayer.

The quiet day will be led by Lisa Persons, M.Div., who is a spiritual director at Amerson House Spirituality Center behind St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. She is a longtime associate of Green Bough House of Prayer, has studied intensively with Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault, and has organized monthly Taizé prayers in the Atlanta area since 1992.

We will learn different forms of contemplative prayer such as centering prayer, welcoming prayer, Lectio Divina, the labyrinth, and Thomas Keating’s teachings on true/false self. In addition, the group will practice silent prayer each gathering and have an opportunity to check in (optional), holding one another’s stories with the response of holy silence.

We will meet in the Lanier House living room on Thursdays from 6-7:30 p.m., twice a month, for nine gatherings beginning Thursday, January 10. The text we will be reading together is Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories that Heal, by Rachel Naomi Remen.

Copies afre reserved in the Cathedral Book Store. The cost of the offering is $180 for the nine weeks with the idea that those interested are intentional about participating in the whole offering. WORSHIP BLUE CHRISTMAS SERVICE For many of us, Christmas is a tough time and can be the occasion for “feeling blue,” while the culture around is focused on being happy and celebrating. The constant refrain on radio and television, in shopping malls and churches, about the happiness of the Christmas season, and about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of

unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation, the gut-wrenching loss of a loved one, and even the loss of a dear family pet – all can contribute to feeling alone, or “blue,” especially during the holidays. There are years when we hurt at Christmas, and we struggle to join in the festivities. At such times

we need to co-create sacred space, and take time to acknowledge our sadness, loss, and grief.

And, we need to know that we are not alone. The Cathedral invites you to join in sharing a Blue Christmas Service on Wednesday, December 19, at 6:30 p.m., in St. Mary’s Chapel.

God’s presence is also for those who mourn and for those who struggle, and God’s Word comes to shine light into our darkness. We pray that you may find comfort and peace and may experience the wonder and hope of Christmas, even in the midst of “feeling blue.” Please feel free to invite others to come. TOY DRIVE 2018 BENEFITING EMMAUS HOUSE Please join St. Monica’s Guild in a toy drive to assist Emmaus House in providing a cheerful Christmas to all in their neighborhood.

Last year, 540 children were given a new gift from Mr. and Mrs. Claus during the Children’s Christmas Festival. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Emmaus House welcomes more than 1,000 neighbors to share in a variety of holiday celebrations ranging from children all the way to seniors.

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT SIGN-UP It is time to sign up for the Christmas Pageant, held every year at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve. All children registered in Sunday School, from the 4-year-olds through fifth grade, are welcome to participate. Advent

Lessons & Carols december 2 — 4 pm

On Sunday, December 2, at 4 p.m., the Cathedral will offer its annual Advent Procession of Lessons and Carols, sung by the Cathedral Choir.

Those who have attended this candlelight service in past years know what a perfect opportunity it is to step back from the hectic pace of the post-Thanksgiving, pre-Christmas season, and take a few moments to contemplate its real meaning.

The singing of carols within the context of Anglican and Episcopal liturgies is a relatively recent phenomenon. Across the pond, it was only in the 1870s that carols began to be sung in London parish churches, and in 1880 Truro became the first English cathedral to hold a carol service. Our two services of Lessons and Carols (for Advent on December 2, and for Christmas on December 23) are adapted from the famous carol service at King’s College, Cambridge, which has become popular worldwide since World War II through annual radio broadcasts on Christmas Eve. For our Advent service we include the ancient “O Antiphons”, one after each of the seven lessons. These Christian texts invoke the Messiah to return and have been sung through the ages at Vespers on the seven evenings leading up to Christmas, and each is sung to equally ancient and beautiful plainchant. Whether you best sense the eternal through timeless chant, or wonderful choral music, or popular carols sung by all, there is something for everyone in this service. Why not practice a “random act of kindness” and make the service a gift to someone this year by inviting them to attend? It may turn out to be one of the best gifts you give.
