GIVING FROM POVERTY (From Dean Sam Candler’s sermon on 11 November 2018. See the entire sermon at cathedralATL.org.) Jesus sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” Mark 12:41–44 Where is the church going to get the money it needs? … Some of us depend upon the big donors. And, believe me, the church needs generous large donors. Many churches, and ours, too, appreciate those who give from their abundance. Jesus said elsewhere, “From those to whom much is given, much is required” (Luke 12:48). That is good. I enjoy people who give out of their abundance. The church needs people like that. We really do. And so, when Jesus looked at the Temple treasury one day, he saw the marvelous new building projects, and the new classrooms, and he appreciated how they were named. There was Jeremiah Hall, given by the beautiful Jeremiah family. There was the exquisite Isaiah courtyard. And there was the lovely Leviticus Hall, given by the historic Levite family. Those gifts are incredibly important! Thank you! But Jesus also noticed something else that day. He certainly did not condemn the large givers. But what he remarked upon was the person who was giving out of her poverty. … What was it about her gift that Jesus applauded? What does it mean to give out of one’s poverty? Well, if poverty means being poor in something, Jesus is saying “Blessed are the people who give out of the places where they are poor.” People who give out of their poverty give from the places where they are weakest. Maybe they don’t have much money; but they give it, and they give a lot of it, often more generously than the people who do have lots of money. … Poverty, like wealth, can be about things other than money. Many of us are poor in spirit, poor in relationships, poor in happiness, poor in courage, poor in wisdom; we even feel poor in love. What does it mean to give out of our poverty when our poverty is about something other than money? Well, the principle is the same. I believe Jesus means to give from any place in our lives that feels weak, or thin, or poor. I believe Jesus means to give from the place we feel the weakest, from the place where we feel the poorest. That’s what giving from our poverty means. Are you poor in relationships? Then, give from there. Invite someone to sit with you at church, in the park, go for a walk with someone. Are you feeling poor in courage? Give even your most meager attempt at bravery! Many military veterans, here today on Veterans Day, know what that is like—to be brave when they were not feeling courageous at all. We salute them! Are you feeling poor in love, as if no one loves you? Then, give from that place! Go give whatever small sliver of love you do have to someone else! It is amazing what happens when people who don’t think they are loved go out and try loving someone. Are you feeling unhappy about yourself ? Are you poor in happiness? Well, giving from that place means going out and finding someone else for whom you can be happy. Yes, try being happy for someone else! The odds are you will feel happier about yourself as well. Give from whatever place you feel the weakest. Sometimes that requires some self-examination. Where am I the weakest? Where am I the poorest? That is the place from which God invites me to give. United Thank OFFERING GIVE THANKS WITH UTO UTO Ingathering this Sunday, November 18 Every day we have so many blessings that come our way. Let us rejoice and give thanks this fall by participating in our Cathedral’s United Thank Offering (UTO). Having spent time adding daily offerings of thanks to your UTO Blue Box, you can open it on Saturday, November 17 and count your offerings. Write a check for your total amount, payable to the Cathedral of St. Philip (with UTO in the memo line), and bring it to church on this Sunday, November 18 where you will receive a UTO envelope for the offering plate. Or, you can make a contribution at the Atrium kiosk or online at cathedralATL.org/contribute. Then, take your empty Blue Box and keep the tradition alive at home until the spring ingathering day! UTO has been a tradition since 1889 and supports the missions and ministries of the Episcopal Church. Every cent collected fulfills diocesan grant requests, and each year over $2.5 million dollars is received through UTO offerings. In 2012 our own Holy Comforter Episcopal Church received $26,400 to support the good works of its Friendship Center. Atlanta's Rainbow Village, whose mission is to transform lives of homeless families, received a grant in 2015 for $75,000. Each year the Diocese of Atlanta may make applications for up to two grants.

CONTEMPLATIVE SPIRITUALITY GROUP OFFERING Contemplative living is a way of being in the world with an attention to the awareness of God’s presence in our lives. This group, led by Barbara Pendergrast (a spiritual director, chaplain, and Cathedral parishioner), invites us to practice listening to self and each other differently, to become more familiar with contemplative ways of being in the world, to practice staying present with self and others in those places that we want to change or fix in ourselves and others, to be introduced to literature and learning around contemplative writers and practitioners, to form spiritual community, and to have the opportunity to receive God’s love through setting aside intentional time for that awareness. We will learn different forms of contemplative prayer such as centering prayer, welcoming prayer, Lectio Divina, the labyrinth, and Thomas Keating’s teachings on true/false self. In addition, the group will practice silent prayer each gathering and have an opportunity to check in (optional), holding one another’s stories with the response of holy silence. We will meet in the Lanier House living room on Thursdays from 6-7:30 p.m., twice a month, for nine gatherings beginning Thursday, January 10. The text we will be reading together is Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories that Heal, by Rachel Naomi Remen. The cost of the offering is $180 for the nine weeks with the idea that those interested are intentional about participating in the whole offering. The group will be limited to twelve participants. For questions or more information contact Barbara Pendergrast at pendergrast1@gmail.com.

He has been featured in Architectural Digest, Town and Country, and House and Garden. Paula Prykeis a world authority on floral art, publisher of 18 books on the subject, widely recognized as one of London’s top florists. ADVENT QUIET DAY: PREPARING THE HEART IN ADVENT “Our brokenness is the wound through which the full power of God can penetrate our being and transfigure us in God.” – Jean Vanier

Will you walk with us?

cathedralATL.org/pledge

The quiet day will take place in the Lanier House on the Cathedral campus, 9:30 a .m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, December 1. In this Advent quiet day, come spend time preparing your heart for the birth of Wisdom. The heart can be prepared to welcome the Christ, born in the poorest, mostly unlikely corner of our hearts. This day will include opportunities for wisdom practices that prepare and open the heart for transformation: chant, extended silence for individual reflection with readings, the labyrinth, and body prayer. The quiet day will be led by Lisa Persons, M.Div., who is a spiritual director at Amerson House Spirituality Center behind St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. She is a long-time associate of Green Bough House of Prayer, has studied intensively with Rev. Cynthia Bourgeault, and has organized monthly Taizé prayers in the Atlanta area since 1992. The cost is $20 and includes lunch. Please register before November 27 at cathedralATL.org/quietday or by contacting Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@cathedralATL.org or 404-365-1031.
