REALLY, REALLY WELCOME! By Canon Lauren Holder Canon for Outreach and Congregational Life Before I came to the Cathedral, friends familiar with the place assured me it was a wonderfully welcoming community. I will admit I had my doubts. How could a place so large be mindful of every person walking through the doors? Wouldn’t some visitors go unnoticed? I can honestly say after being at the Cathedral for six months, I think we might be the most welcoming church in all of Atlanta. Perhaps all of Georgia! And yet I’m sure we do miss some folks visiting. It may be that one has to be here several weeks before that person gets a sense of how we strive to embrace grace, excellence, and hospitality in all we do. I learned recently that there used to be a “Parking Brigade” here at the cathedral—a faithful group of volunteers who ensured that elderly people finding their footing and young families wrangling children were ushered into the sanctuary this campus provides long before they ever reached the nave of the church. And I have been in churches where folks stood outside the church doors in all kinds of weather to greet people and assist people. Even Atlanta weather! The Book of Common Prayer describes sacrament as “An outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace.” This fall, I hope you (and our visitors especially!) will begin to see some new outward and visible signs. The Newcomers Committee, Ushers, and Green Aprons are joining forces as a Welcome Dream Team to help ensure no person is left unwelcomed. You will see folks wearing “Ask me!” pins to let visitors know we are ready to assist them. And you! You too can be an outward and visible sign of the many inward and spiritual graces in this place. We have plenty of green aprons, usher carnations, newcomer badges, and “Ask me!” pins to go around. And you can help us bring back the parking brigade as well! If you want to help ensure everyone knows just how welcoming we are, I hope you’ll let me know.

Our members serve at a variety of events at the Cathedral, often assisting our Chef Lauren Raymond by helping prep and arrange food, set up for the events, and serve guests. When do we serve? We serve all throughout the year at receptions, lunches, Christmas, Easter, the Cathedral Antiques Show, and more! What are the benefits? WILDERNESS WORKS THIS SUNDAY Representatives from the Cathedral Antiques Show will introduce their 2019 beneficiary, Wilderness Works, this Sunday, August 19, at 10:10 a.m. in Child Hall. Wilderness Works has served Atlanta’s chronically homeless, impoverished, and extremely vulnerable children for over 20 years. They provide year-round enrichment, experiential education, and character development through city camps, summer nature camps, and outdoor living field camps in our National Parks. Wilderness Works teaches self-worth through self-sufficiency gained during discovery experiences at these camps.
SPIRITUALITY AUGUST 20 LABYRINTH WALK AND TAIZÉ Get your week off to a peaceful start with a labyrinth walk and Taizé this Monday, August 20. A labyrinth introduction will take place at 6:30 p.m., followed by a facilitated walk 7-8 p.m. (outdoors by the Lanier House, weather permitting; otherwise in Child Hall). The Taizé prayer service starts at 8 p.m. in Mikell Chapel. Originating in Taizé, France, this simple service of scripture, music and candlelight will bring a beautiful and prayerful close to your Monday. The labyrinth and Taizé take place every third Monday of the month. Come to one, or both – and bring a friend!

OUTREACH HELP BCM LAUNCH NEW FOOD ASSISTANCE CONCEPT In lieu of its traditional August Food Drive, Buckhead Christian Ministry (BCM) has asked our Cathedral parishioners to partner with them in the development of an updated client-choice food pantry. Instead of donating nonperishable food items, you can prayerfully provide a monetary donation which will serve as seed money for this exciting endeavor. People from the community will be able to shop for their own groceries in the new food pantry, helping reduce food waste and promoting human dignity. BCM sees over 8,000 households and provides over $75,000 worth of groceries each year to families in need. As BCM continues to grow and move towards its vision of a community free of hunger and homelessness, they are actively working towards innovative ways of serving the needs of our community. Look for St. Anne’s Guild volunteers to gladly receive your cash or checks (made to “The Cathedral of St. Philip” with BCM Food Pantry on memo line) in the Atrium on Sundays in August.
