SLOWING DOWN FOR THE SACRED By Canon Cathy Zappa Canon for Education and Worship Do you remember the story in 2 Samuel about King David and the Israelites carrying the ark of the covenant into Jerusalem? They were so excited that they were dancing with all their might before the Lord! And that’s not all: “when those bearing the ark had gone six paces, David made an offering of an ox and a fatling” (2 Samuel 6:13). You could read this a couple of ways: they made one sacrifice after their first six paces; or they made several sacrifices, one after every six paces. I find the latter reading more interesting. It suggests that this journey wasn’t about getting to their destination as quickly as possible, but rather about remembering and celebrating God’s presence with them—and about being present to that Presence. This detail struck me because of a pilgrimage I took this summer, with some of you, to Iona, Scotland. A small, remote island, where sheep far outnumber people, Iona has been a popular destination for pilgrims since the sixth century. In the middle of our week there, our hosts, John Philip and Ali Newell, led us around the island to visit its historically holy sites. Like David and the Israelites, we paused often, to pray, sing, dance, listen, reflect. Not every six paces, but enough that it was clear that we were in no hurry and that these prayerful stops were essential to our journey. Somewhere around the middle of the day, we made our way to St. Columba’s Bay, also known as the Bay of New Beginnings; and we stopped again, on a deep beach of rounded stones. Here, John Philip invited each of us to find two stones: one that represented something we wanted to throw into the sea and leave behind, and one that represented a longing—something we wanted to take back home. Searching for those two stones, I started noticing all the other stones under my feet. I saw how beautiful they were, and how different from one another. I couldn’t walk even six paces without stopping and dropping to my knees to get a closer look. It was raining, and they were wet; so their colors and patterns stood out even more vividly than usual. Time had written a story on each of them, with little pencil lines that marked thousands or millions of years. These ancient stories put my own into perspective and connected me to something bigger than I; they assured me of God’s eternal presence here, in this very spot where I was. When I left the bay, I continued to see those sacred stones, scattered all over the island, mixed in with the sheep dung and dust on the trails I’d been tromping over all week. I don’t know which came first, the slowing down, or the reverence—the awe. Did I slow down because I recognized something sacred here, or did I recognize something sacred here because I had slowed down? I do know that the two go together. What else, or who else, might be transformed before my very eyes, if I slowed down enough to really see them and hear their story—or if I took for granted God’s presence in them? What would our world would be like, if we all did that? Perhaps this is where justice begins.

FAITHFUL CONVERSATIONS WITH BCM

CLASS FOR DRIVERS 50+

Join Canons Cathy Zappa and Lauren Holder in our final session of Faithful Conversations at 10:10 a.m. Sunday in Child Hall. This week, Canon Holder will interview Tiffany Banks, our long-time partner at Buckhead Christian Ministries (BCM). Tiffany will talk to us about how her faith informs her work with BCM, while also responding to questions about how BCM is restructuring some of its services to be more respectful of and responsive to people in need. This is a timely interview, as St. Anne’s Guild collects funds for BCM’s food pantry every August!

Join us at the Cathedral Thursday, August 16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., for the AARP's Smart Driver course. The course is a sixhour refresher aimed at motorists 50 years old and older. Some of the objectives of the class include understanding the effects of aging on driving; learning driving strategies that take into account the changes we experience as we age; and a number of other topics designed to make you a safer driver. At the completion of the class, you may be eligible to receive a discount on your automobile insurance policy. The cost for AARP members is $15 and $20 for nonmembers, paid at the door by cash or check. You must bring your AARP card to receive the discount. Feel free to bring a lunch. You may sign up by calling the Information Desk at 404365-1000. If you have additional questions, contact the course instructor, Stratton Leedy, at 404-237-8910.

OUTREACH HELP BCM LAUNCH NEW FOOD ASSISTANCE CONCEPT

Cathedral ANTIQUES SHOW ANTIQUES SHOW ANNOUNCES 2019 BENEFICIARY

In lieu of its traditional August Food Drive, Buckhead Christian Ministry (BCM) has asked our Cathedral parishioners to partner with them in the development of an updated client-choice food pantry. Instead of donating nonperishable food items, you can prayerfully provide a monetary donation which will serve as seed money for this exciting endeavor. People from the community will be able to shop for their own groceries in the new food pantry, helping reduce food waste and promoting human dignity. BCM sees over 8,000 households and provides over $75,000 worth of groceries each year to families in need. As BCM continues to grow and move towards its vision of a community free of hunger and homelessness, they are actively working towards innovative ways of serving the needs of our community. Look for St. Anne’s Guild volunteers to gladly receive your cash or checks (made to “The Cathedral of St. Philip” with BCM Food Pantry on memo line) in the Atrium on Sundays in August. Or, donate online at stphilipscathedral.org/bcm2018.

2019 Cathedral Antiques Show Chair Elspeth Willcoxon and Chair Elect Jenny McClure are pleased to announce the show’s beneficiary will be Wilderness Works. Wilderness Works has served Atlanta’s chronically homeless, impoverished, and extremely vulnerable children for over 20 years. They provide year-round enrichment, experiential education, and character development through city camps, summer nature camps, and outdoor living field camps in our National Parks. Wilderness Works teaches self-worth through self-sufficiency gained during discovery experiences at these camps. The funding we raise for them will go toward refurbishing the dormitories at the Memorial Drive city camp and providing a recreational assistance vehicle for off-site camping. Learn more about their work at wildernessworks.org The Cathedral Antiques Show has been a major outreach project of the Episcopal Church Women of the Cathedral of St. Philip for 48 years. We will again host antiques dealers, art dealers, floral designers, and interiors designers, as well as two tours of Buckhead homes. Each year, all net proceeds benefit at designated charity and over the years, the show has contributed over $5 million to Atlanta area non-profit organizations. The show will be held January 23-27, 2019. For more information, visit cathedralantiques.org.
