SUMMER RULES By Canon George Maxwell Vicar My wife, Mary Hunter, suggested that we adopt of rule of life for the summer. The rule is relatively simple. Every day we look for something for which we are grateful, and for opportunities to get outside, read, play a game, and learn something new. The rule is not supposed to be a set of boxes to be checked every day. Robert, our sixyear-old, has already established the “Rules for the New House” – things like “Tell someone if you are going into the basement or outside” and “No sliding down the stairs headfirst.” The rule is supposed to serve as a reminder of things we want to do as often as we can. It is intended to serve more like a mutual invitation. We want to get into a rhythm in which these things became part of our life together. When Memorial Day finally came, we were eager to get started! We decided to take a short hike along a trail that runs behind the Garden Hills community pool, thinking it would be a perfect place to do a little exploring. It wasn’t long, though, before it became clear that we were not all of one mind about our adventure. The trail was longer than some of us had expected, and the beauty of nature proved to be no match for the unanticipated demands of hunger and thirst. The rain didn’t help either. I knew we were in trouble when Robert announced, “If you don’t feed me right now, I’m going to sit down and never eat again.” I was just about to add a codicil on conduct to our rule of life, but Mary Hunter chose to interpret Robert’s comment as an interest in hunger strikes and led us into a conversation about Mahatma Gandhi and the strategies of nonviolent civil disobedience. Mary Hunter was supplying the rhythm. We kept going. The unwelcome climb up the hill to Taco Mac at Lindbergh City Center turned into an Orton-Gillingham training session, as we all practiced making the sounds of various letters and learning about red words that have to be memorized because they can’t be sounded out. The disappointment at the dessert offerings at Taco Mac led to a trip on MARTA to Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams in Decatur. The uncomfortable heat on the square in Decatur led to a cool break reading children’s books (and passing in and out of Platform 9-¾) in A Little Shop of Stories. By the time we found our way home, we had been outside most of the day, read, played games, and found many things for which we were grateful. And, I learned some very important things about rhythm. Sunday ADULT EDUCATION FAITHFUL CONVERSATIONS Join Canons Cathy Zappa and Lauren Holder as we engage in Faithful Conversations, at 10:10 a.m. Sundays in Child Hall. Each week, we will invite a member of our community to sit down with us and talk with us about faith and society in a real and personal way. This Sunday, June 10, Canon Holder will interview Deacon Juan Sandoval and Graham Younger of Faith in Public Life about how our faith life intersects with immigration. Our hope is that the courage our conversation partners bring to our discussions will equip us to go “out into the world to do the work God has given us to do.”
OUR TRUE SELVES The Rev. Dr. Thee Smith leads this series of colistening classes at 10:10 a.m. Sundays in Room 240 that aim to enhance our personal, interpersonal, and intergroup ability to be fully ourselves—our true, worthy, and estimable selves. This class explores the theory and practice of genuine listening—listening with skilled awareness that can focus on everyday experiences, or range through tough political issues to include a vast variety of life choices and faith matters.
THE ENJOYMENT OF BIBLICAL GREEK Open to beginners, this class includes long-term members who who use translation aids including lexicons and commentaries to enjoy how probing the Greek of New Testament texts adds nuance and depth to reading Holy Scripture. MUSIC STAFF SINGER AND CHOIR VOLUNTEER POSITIONS The Cathedral invites auditions by singers interested in being considered for staff singer positions for the 2018-2019 program year in its soprano, tenor, and bass-baritone sections, as well as those in all voice parts who may be interested in volunteering in the Cathedral Choir. The Cathedral's 12 staff singers form the professional core of the Cathedral Choir (about 60 singers) as well as its chamber ensemble, the Cathedral Schola (about 35 voices), all of which sing in the style of the Anglican choral tradition. We will cover a range of topics, including parenting, marriage, women’s spirituality, faith at home, and friendship. While this group is specifically designed for moms, it is open to all women. OUTREACH DONATE FOR HAITI MISSION-PILGRIMAGE We’re going back to Haiti! This summer, the Cathedral is making its second mission-pilgrimage to CapHaitien, Haiti, to continue serving, learning, and building relationships with our partner organization, Eternal Hope in Haiti. As we prepare for our pilgrimage, we hope that you will join us in our journey through offering different forms of support. We always welcome and need your prayers as we prepare and travel. Another way to support us is through donating specific items that we will take with us on our pilgrimage. If you prefer an in-person option, please bring familysized toiletries, Ensure, and feminine products to the Cathedral and place in the marked bin by the Information Desk. If you prefer an online option, please look at our Amazon Wish List, “Haiti Pilgrimage” listed under “Cathedral of St. Philip.” All of the items donated will be packed in our luggage and given to Eternal Hope in Haiti to distribute at their orphanage and medical clinics.
