PRESENT OVER PERFECT: LENTEN WEDNESDAY PROGRAM Join us from 6–7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, February 21 and 28, and March 7, 14, and 21 for dinner and conversation. Wednesday nights in Lent, Canon Lauren Holder will facilitate a book study of Shauna Niequists’ Present Over Perfect. Niequist writes: “A few years ago, I found myself exhausted and isolated, my soul and body sick. I was tired of being tired, burned out on busy. And, it seemed almost everyone I talked with was in the same boat: longing for connection, meaning, depth, but settling for busy.” Her book is a series of essays that invite us to consider what life might look like if we strip away the self-perpetuated pressure to excel in all things, and instead to truly excel in what we deem most important. Lent is an ideal time to be introspective and intentional about what is running us into the ground, and what we can chose to run after instead. Find Present Over Perfect in the Cathedral Book Store, or listen on your commute with Audible. Join us, even if you have not read the book. Dinner is $8 for adults and youth, and $5 for children ages 4–12. Children 3 and under eat free. RSVP at stphilipscathedral.org/present. 6 p.m. Dinner 6:30 p.m. Programming • Adults will meet in the Gould Room. • Youth will color through the Psalms. • Children will talk about present-but-not-perfect biblical characters in Godly Play. • Infants and toddlers will enjoy childcare. 7:15p.m. Closing Prayer • Led by our children and youth.
Attend a tour of the Cathedral during Lent and learn the history of the parish and the stories in the windows. Jean Morris will lead the tour on Wednesday, February 28, at 5 p.m., before dinner and the Lenten program. Meet in the narthex, near the back of the Cathedral nave.
AN INVITATION TO THE OBSERVANCE OF A HOLY LENT In addition to the Wednesday series, the Cathedral offers a variety of ways in which you might observe a holy Lent, “by self-examination and repentence; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word” (BCP, p.265). Join us in one of these special programs and events, or find a way to turn back to God this season. Details for each event is inside the Times and online at stphilipscathedral.org.

Sunday ADULT EDUCATION Unless otherwise noted, these adult classes meet from 10:10–11 a.m.
OLD FASHIONED SUNDAY SCHOOL
LIVING FAITH
Child Hall This Sunday, Canon George Maxwell continues a series on The Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis that will continue through Lent. As always, we’ll offer a warm welcome and great coffee. We look forward to seeing you there.
Room 120 Through the season of Lent, we are exploring what Ignatius of Loyola, a Spanish mystic and founder of the Jesuits, has to say to us today. We are using his Spiritual Exercises as a guide to explore Ignatian practices of prayer and discernment and to seek to hear God’s call for us. This series is led by Dr. Kyle Lambelet, a new Cathedral parishioner who teaches at Candler School of Theology, with Canons Wallace Marsh and Cathy Zappa.
HOLY SCRIPTURES IN ENGLISH AND GREEK Room 239 This New Testament Greek class selects key verses from each Sunday's scripture readings and provides user-friendly translation aids so that even first timers can enjoy fresh insights in Bible study.
THE ENJOYMENT OF BIBLICAL GREEK Room 356 (1:15 p.m.) Also open to beginners, this class includes long-term members who use translation aids including lexicons and commentaries to enjoy how probing the Greek of New Testament texts adds nuance and depth to reading Holy Scripture. For more information on either Greek class, contact the Rev. Dr. Thee Smith, thee.smith@emory.edu.
YOUNG ADULT LENTEN BIBLE STUDY Room 240
Young adults are invited to a special Bible study led by seminarian Caroline Carson and parishioner David Boyd. Join them as they take a look at the Gospel of John.
SMALL GROUP BIBLE STUDY Room 122 Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis lead an ongoing small group Bible Study focusing on the book of Genesis. For more information, please contact Jim Bingham at 404-373-3273 or binghamjim@bellsouth.net.
Episcopal Church WOMEN On Saturday, March 24, the Episcopal Church Women of the Cathedral and Northside United Methodist Church’s Women’s Ministry present Awake to Wellness, a women’s retreat with Dr. Cathy Snapp and Kitty Crenshaw, authors of The Hidden Life Awakened. Cathy and Kitty will awaken our deep desire to live as God designed us, wholehearted and well-balanced—body, mind, and spirit. In our three sessions throughout the day, we will talk about brain and body health in the context of awakening; about the
brain’s capacity for renewal and transformation through focused attention; and about how a deeper awakening to our true self—our life hidden with Christ—will integrate within us a powerful spirit in its truest form. The cost is $50/person ($45/ person for tables of 8) and includes lunch from Simply Fresh. All proceeds go to Ignatian Spirituality Project, non-profit offering spiritual retreats to homeless women. Register online at stphilipscathedral.org/awake or contact Caroline Wallace, cfwallace2@comcast.net, for more information.
SPIRITUALITY PRAYER CORNER – BY FAY SWENNES Coming to the Episcopal Church by way of the Baptist tradition did not exactly prepare me for an encounter with all things liturgical. It did, however, provide an avenue for my enthusiasm to volunteer. After my confirmation, I was eager to get involved in each organization, project, or parochial entity here at the Cathedral, and so I did. Soon, I was feeling like I belonged, but something was missing. My involvement was lacking meaning and a spiritual element which I thought should be present. I was going through the motions, even doing good things, but not feeding my soul in the process. For some time, I had observed the women wearing purple smocks, moving in and around the altar before and after worship services. Eventually, I got to know some of them and asked to join that ministry known as the Daughters of the King. Back in the day, the Daughters were responsible for all altar duty, vesting of clergy, brass and silver polishing, and just about everything necessary to support the worship experience of this Cathedral parish. On becoming a Daughter, I chose to learn altar duty as my area of service. I apprenticed for a while with more experienced women until I felt a certain confidence in what I was doing. Almost immediately, I began to feel the sacred aspects of this work, preparing the bread and wine which ultimately became the body and blood of our Lord. I began to learn the strange names of vessels, linens, and vestments. I could appreciate and understand more of our liturgical traditions and that knowledge enhanced my own worship experience. Initially, I was very apprehensive about this work, always afraid I would make a mistake or do something terribly wrong which would never be forgotten or forgiven. In time, I gained the experience which developed the confidence I needed. I did make some mistakes, but I had some laughs as well. I had a lot to learn and that learning experience is still ongoing today, some thirty years later. Currently, I am serving as Co-Chair of the Altar Guild along with Mary Mercer. It is a joy and a privilege to work alongside this group of dedicated men and women (we are no longer exclusively Daughters of the King). And only a few of us wear the purple smocks, but we are all learning and growing as we seek to do the work God has given us to do with grace. We would love to have you join us!
A DAY WITH CYNTHIA BOURGEAULT PRESENTED BY THE CATHEDRAL AND CONTEMPLATIVE OUTREACH ATLANTA On Saturday, March 17, modern day mystic, Episcopal priest, writer, and internationally known retreat leader Cynthia Bourgeault will explore the themes of her book, The Heart of Centering Prayer, at the Cathedral. This day-long conference will include lectures, discussion and question and answer, and of course, time for centering prayer itself. The cost is $50/person and will include lunch. Register online at stphilipscathedral.org/spirituality or contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@ stphilipscathedral.org or 404-365-1031, for more information. Cynthia has been a long-time advocate of the meditative practice of centering prayer and has worked closely with fellow teachers and colleagues including Thomas Keating, Bruno Barnhart, and Richard Rohr. Cynthia has actively participated in numerous inter-spiritual dialogues and events with luminaries and leaders such as A.H. Almaas, Kabir Helminski, Swami Atmarupananda, and Rami Shapiro.
2018 WOMEN’S LENTEN RETREAT Icons Of Grace: Shining the Light of God’s Love Through Our Stories Join the women of the Cathedral on the 2018 Lenten Retreat, March 2-4 at Kanuga in Hendersonville, North Carolina, as we use the stories of scripture, our own lives, poetry, images, a contemplative art offering, and silence to more deeply cull the graces God gifts us. The retreat leader will be the Rev. Beth Knowlton, Rector of St. Mark’s in San Antonio (and former Canon for Liturgy and Worship here at the Cathedral!). Register online at stphilipscathedral.org/lentenretreat or contact Jeannie Mahood, jmahood@stphilipscathedral.org or 404-365-1031, for further information.
OUTREACH HABITAT KICKOFF DINNER THIS SUNDAY
HELP STOCK BCM’S FOOD PANTRY IN FEBRUARY
We begin our annual Habitat season with food and fellowship this Sunday, Feb. 25. Join us to meet some of the team and to find out more about the project. We welcome past builders and new builders. If you have never built, come be part of this exciting ministry. Construction begins on March 10 and runs Saturdays (and a Thursday) through April 28. No skills required, just your enthusiasm. We will give you the tools and training that you need to make a contribution. You can sign up in the Atrium on Sundays or contact John Champion, 404 307-0817 or jchampion@bellsouth.net, to get additional information. Also, you can sign up online through our Habitat site at www.stphilip. atlantahabitat.volunteerhub.com. If you don't want to build, but would be interested in being part of the food team preparing lunches for our builders, contact John Champion for more information.
February is food drive month at the Cathedral as St. Anne’s Guild reaches out to you for donations of food and/or checks of $20 or more in support of Buckhead Christian Ministry (BCM). Please stop by our table in the Atrium any Sunday in February between 9:45 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. for a shopping list of food items or make your check payable to the Cathedral with “BCM Food Drive” on the memo line. BCM helps families of the working poor in our community who do not have adequate resources when faced with emergencies, illness, or layoffs. In addition to food, BCM currently has a tremendous need for cases of bottled water, personal hygiene products, and baby supplies such as disposable diapers—all in sizes that can easily be carried on public transportation. BCM provides various forms of assistance to an average of 40 to 50 clients per day. Your help makes a difference in so many lives!
MUSIC OREGON ORGANIST TO PERFORM This Sunday afternoon, February 25 at 3:15 p.m., we welcome organist Christopher Lynch, from Trinity Cathedral in Portland, Oregon, as our Sunday afternoon recitalist. A graduate of Indiana University, Lynch’s program will consist of Marcel Dupré’s Symphonie-Passion. Written in 1924 and based on Dupré’s recollection of an improvisation he gave at the Wannamaker store in Philadelphia three years earlier, this work is one of Dupré’s greatest, and relatively rarely performed. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear one of America’s rising talents perform this masterpiece.
EVENSONG THIS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25 WILL BE SUNG BY THE CHOIR OF ST. JAMES EPISCOPAL CHURCH, MARIETTA.
ERD LENTEN MEDITATIONS AVAILABLE For over 75 years, Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD) has served as a compassionate response to worldwide human suffering. In particular, the agency collaborates with local church and ecumenical partners in nearly 40 countries to help communities create long-term development strategies and to rebuild after disasters. In 2009, the General Convention of The Episcopal Church designated Lent as a time to support, remember, and pray for ERD’s work and witness. You can connect more deeply with their ministry by using ERD’s Lenten Meditations, available in Spanish and English, which will be distributed on Sundays in the narthex.
Pastoral CARE JOURNEY OF GRIEF: THE PATH FROM LENTEN MOURNING TO EASTER HOPE This workshop, led by Meg Moye from the Cathedral Counseling Center, is for those who have lost a loved one and are experiencing the feelings and challenges of grief. On Wednesdays, February 21, March 7, and March 21, from 11:30 a.m. –1 p.m., we will offer a supportive, confidential space to learn about the process of grieving and to share our individual experience and journey with others who are seeking physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. The cost of the workshop is $60 for all three sessions; contact Meg Moye, 404-483-3711, to register.
Enjoy a weekend full of spirituality and fellowship with other Cathedral parishioners and clergy. Kanuga is a wonderful place to relax, enjoy the outdoors, and experience God with the beloved community. The weekend includes old favorites such as s'mores, hiking, rocking on the porch, ice cream, bluegrass and, of course, the famous Kanuga toast. We will offer an adult program on Saturday morning and enjoy worshiping together in the informal chapel on Sunday. Meals are served family-style in the lodge and accommodations are available in historic cottages or the hotel-style inn.

KAREN MARSH AT THE CATHEDRAL BOOK STORE
INFORMATION DESK VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Author Karen Marsh will sign her newest book on Saturday, February 24 from 10:30 a.m.–noon in the Cathedral Book Store. Saints are people too. The word saint conjures up images of superstar Christians revered for their spectacular acts and otherworldly piety. But when we take a closer look at the lives of these spiritual heavyweights, we learn that they also experienced struggle, doubt, and heartache. In fact, we learn that in many ways they're not all that different from you and me. Narrating her own winding pilgrimage through faith, Karen reveals surprising lessons in everyday spirituality from these “saints”—folks who lived and breathed, and failed and followed God. Told with humor and vulnerability, Vintage Saints and Sinners introduces us afresh to 25 brothers and sisters who challenge and inspire us with their honest faith. Using the included conversation starters, you can join Karen on her journey with the likes of Augustine, Brother Lawrence, and Saint Francis, as well as Amanda Berry Smith, Søren Kierkegaard, Dorothy Day, and many more. Let their lives and their wisdom be an invitation to authentic life in Christ.
Perhaps you have noticed the light is always ON at the Information Desk in the Atrium, signifying that the Cathedral is always open and welcoming. Volunteers staff the desk, now referred to as the Welcome Center, to extend greetings to parishioners and visitors, providing information and direction. Additionally, general calls coming into the Cathedral are answered here and directed as needed. Join this fun ministry by contacting Ivory Richardson, irichardson@stphilipscathedral.org or 404-365-1037. Volunteers are needed to work a shift from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The desk is covered Monday through Friday, so volunteers can pick the day that best suits their schedule. We can be very flexible and work out a plan that works best. Please consider joining this team of wonderful volunteers.
