WORSHIP CHRISTMAS LESSONS AND CAROLS

BLUE CHRISTMAS For many of us, Christmas is a tough time, and can be the occasion for “feeling blue” in the midst of the culture focused on being happy and celebrating. At such times, we need to take time to acknowledge our sadness, loss, and grief. The anguish of broken relationships or unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the loss of a loved one, and even the loss of a dear family pet – all can contribute to a feeling of being alone, of “feeling blue,” in the midst of the season around us. The Cathedral invites you to join us in sharing a Blue Christmas service on Wednesday, December 20, at 6:30 p.m. in St. Mary’s Chapel. We invite you to move from “feeling blue” to experiencing the wonder and hope of Christmas. For questions contact the Rev. Dr. Bill Harkins, bharkins@stphilipscathedral.org, or Canon Wallace Marsh, wmarsh@stphilipscathedral.org.

The Cathedral Schola will lead our annual Festival of Nine Christmas Lessons and Carols by Candlelight this Sunday, December 17 at 4 p.m. Biblical readings narrating the prophecy and birth of Jesus are illuminated by congregational carols and choral music of the Christmas season. Our festival is modeled on the famous worship service at King’s College, Cambridge, which has become popular worldwide since World War II through annual radio broadcasts on Christmas Eve. Whether you best sense the Eternal through beautiful choral music or popular carols sung by all, this service holds something for everyone. Amid the frenetic pace of the Christmas season, this is a perfect opportunity to take a few moments to step back to contemplate and enjoy its real meaning.

LIVING NATIVITY! Join us for the Living Nativity from 9:30–11 a.m. this Sunday, December 17 in Child Hall. All are welcome! Regular Sunday School classes will not meet.

CHORISTERS SELLING HOMEMADE SALSA

ST. VERONICA'S CONTINUES TOILETRY DRIVE

What’s the number one best thing for your 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship party? Chips and salsa, of course! The Cathedral Choristers will be selling homemade salsa on Sunday morning, January 7, in preparation for the National Championship on January 8. They will offer regular salsa as well as peach salsa that morning, and the money raised will help provide scholarships for Royal School of Church Music summer courses, chorister retreats, and other chorister-related expenses. Make sure to get yours — one jar for $10 or two jars for $15. If you’d like to pre-order, email Dr. Patrick Scott, pscott@ stphilipscathedral.org

Dear Anna, I do think of Advent as a season of preparation, but it has always felt less penitential than Lent does to me. It feels more like a time of expectation – as Paul says at the end of his first letter to the Corinthians, “Our Lord come!” I love Advent. The symbols of darkness and light resonate more powerfully with me, as our days grow shorter. The making of evergreen wreaths and the ceremonial lighting of the candles sanctify the time. Hearing the ancient “O” Antiphons in our Lessons and Carols services remind me of the beautiful liturgical traditions that have sustained our waiting for so long. Yet, with all of these spiritual disciplines focused on the present, and the steady flow of scriptural admonitions to stay awake and be alert, it’s still hard not to rush through Advent. There is just so much to do to before the end of the year. And, I find myself quickening my pace and packing my calendar without realizing that my anticipation of what’s coming next has gotten the best of me. I was thinking about all of this recently when I came across a story that one of my favorite writers, Annie Dillard, tells about the birth of a butterfly. Dillard was watching a cocoon one day, waiting for a butterfly to emerge. Her excitement turned into impatience,

CONGREGATIONAL Life NEW CATHEDRAL HISTORY BOOK ON SALE Richard Perry has written new book on the history of the Cathedral of St. Philip, These Old Walls, Volume II, covering 1997–2017. This is a follow-up to the original These Old Walls, which covers 1947–1997. Both are available at the Thrift House and Book Store and make wonderful Christmas presents! Volume II is $15; reprints of Volume I are $10.

so she lit a candle and carefully held it under the cocoon. And, she got what she wanted. The butterfly came out more quickly than it would have otherwise. But, what appeared to be the acceleration of a process turned out to be a short-circuiting of it. The butterfly’s wings had not had the time that they needed to develop, and they were not strong enough to fly. The story reflected my mood more than I

had realized. I have been feeling a little lonely lately. As Christmas plans develop, I am becoming increasingly aware of family and friends that I won’t be able to see this year – and, of course, of people I have loved who aren’t with us anymore. Maybe you are feeling a little like this too. I think the calling of Advent might be to sit with these feelings, avoiding the urge to rush past them. I think that it might be the longings we feel for intimacy and relationship that allow us to develop the wings that we need to fly.

Your affectionate uncle, Ames
